Not much, all you need to know is the ground basic. This is mainly fan-on stuff. Custom devil fruits, races, etc.

I'm really intrigued by the concept behind this roleplay (One Piece for life!), but I do have a few questions in mind.

Is there a plot or is this purely sandbox? Perhaps a combination of both?
I'm thinking of creating a Shichibukai, but seeing where the story is at the moment I'm worried that there won't be many opportunities for interaction between a Shichibukai and the other characters. Do you have anything in mind to overcome this?

Thanks for the questions! I'll answer as best I can.
This game is mostly sandbox, with plenty of room for worldbuilding and creating new things, but there is also a plot. Plot points can either be initiated by the players, or be revealed by the GM (me) as things progress. The plan is for the greater scope of the plot to be slowly revealed as the game goes on.
A Shichibukai is always welcome, and you don't have to worry about waiting for an "opportune time" to interact with others. In this game's prior incarnation, the whole deal was kicked off by rookie pirates picking a fight with a Shichibukai. So any time would be great for interaction with your character.
