    The MHC is a multinational (American and Japanese) conglomerate, consisting of two merged corporations: Melton Limited Corp and the Hisano Corporation. A household name since 2090, the corporation is the leading technology suppliers for both commercial and industrial clients. Well-known for its manufacturing of synthetics and spaceships to everyday household appliances, MHC is a widely successful and powerful corporation. In the past ten years, MHC has been branching out to more non-manufacturing interests with mining and exploration of extraterrestrial technology to stay ahead of the competition.
    
    Recently, the corporation is under fire for one of its flagship vessels randomly combusting and killing those on board which has made national headlines. Another scandal or incident could lead to major financial repercussions.

    The MHS-Desdemona was built and owned by the MHC with its sole purpose to mine and explore for extraterrestrial technology on surrounding planets and moons. A colonial expedition, the corporation hired an extensive team of varying professions along with their families (considering the long expedition). Its bolstering crew of 635 inhabitants has been undergoing their expeditions for the past eight years. Until recently, they were investigating a strange electromagnetic signal from a distant moon.     The SS-Azael is a small spaceship which was built by the MHS, who have hired a small crew of outsiders to investigate the distress call on MHS-Desdemona. They are willing to pay the crew a large sum for investigating the distress call and discovering why the entire crew of the MHS-Desdemona have gone radio silent. Rainfall and snow are incredibly rare occurrences now, with mostly the lower socio-economic, the elderly and people who despise space inhabiting Earth still.     To immediately combat overpopulation, influential countries created their own space stations to house their citizens. These countries include the United States, China, Canada, Japan, India, United Kingdom, Russia, Brazil, France, Germany, Switzerland, Mexico and South Korea. These space stations are governed by their respective countries, yet all (and space itself) are under the universal laws of the "Space Nation Federation" which is made up of a representative from each of the thirteen nations inhabiting space.
    
    Most of the space stations mirror major cities — providing education, jobs, entertainment and housing. It is mainly made up of the middle class and those whose occupations are pertinent to maintaining the space stations.

    Even if he’s spent more time on the glistening Second Earth than mankind’s original home at this point in his life, Amos still can’t seem to shake off the dust of his past.
    
    He’s far from genteel or refined—starkly different from the usual inhabitants of Second Earth. Despite the MD, the white coat, and his comfort with ordering around his OR team, Amos rarely projects any kind of arrogance or superiority. He knows what it’s like to go hungry and be genuinely terrified for his life. Tense situations don’t rattle him; Amos can take and give hits
    
    All that being said, though, his charisma is as effortless as it is dismissive. He’s not necessarily warm or inviting. Not quite extroverted, not quite introverted, his circle of friends is small and he doesn't need much interaction to sustain him. Amos has found a lot of difficulty relating to many of the people on Second Earth; these superfluous relationships require a lot more time and emotional energy than he can afford, frankly.
    
    Already almost at his wits’ end, Amos really only does his best to be good: a good doctor, a good coworker, a decent, unremarkable citizen. His sole refuge is at the bottom of a bottle, and it’s the only one he needs.

    His current position in life and resume are beguiling: despite the six figure income, sports car, and high-rise apartment, Amos's origins are as blue-collar and gritty as they get. Amos was born and raised on Earth, bouncing around between government housing up and down the East Coast of the United States.
    
    He was a middle child of three at one point—now he’s the oldest of two. Amos was raised mostly by a single mother who, God bless her, tried to raise her three boys in the church, so they would be moral and good. They were visited somewhat infrequently by their father, who would steal her away for days at a time without warning, explanation, or any apologies.
    
    The realization that both their parents were hopelessly imprisoned by their substance abuse dawned on them slowly. It was what it was. Each of the Miller boys internalized it differently, had a different reaction. Amos was the only one of them who took any kind of interest in his schoolwork: the other two began following in their parents’ footsteps, whether or not they were aware of it.

    His life forever changed when he came home to find his oldest brother passed out on the bathroom floor. They rallied and rushed him to the emergency room, where they were met with this desperate young boy’s first positive role model: the doctor who saved his brother’s life and convinced him everything was going to be okay. It was strangely inspiring. Amos was left both traumatized and awestruck, vowing that he would one day be a doctor like that.
    
    So he started working his ass off in school. Enrolled in honors classes, stayed late after school to study until the janitor kicked him out of the library, picked up volunteer shifts at the absolutely overwhelmed free clinic down the street from home. Distanced himself from his family as much as he could because it was too difficult to be around. Amos graduated close to the top of his class, enrolled in college, and did the same thing over again.
    
    Amos worked himself dry to get to medical school, where he was met with even more backbreaking schoolwork and clinical shifts. The stress mounted—all the student loans and debt he was racking up, family members showing up unannounced, tweaking, begging for a place to stay, bills, grades, running on no sleep. Again, he managed, graduating again close to the top of his class with his choice of a specialty. Somehow.

    Then something incredibly rare happened when he graduated medical school: Amos was matched with a residency on Second Earth. Never before had he heard of someone being placed somewhere so prestigious, in the place people literally dream about one day making it. It was an opportunity he simply couldn’t turn down—quite literally a ticket to heaven, far away from all the sources of his grief.
    
    Life became both easier and harder on Second Earth. His days spent breathing clean air and basking in the unfiltered sunlight for the first time slowly began to fill him with resentment. Amos couldn’t explain to lifelong Second Earth residents why it all made him so angry, and eventually why he supported the rebels at the cost of his job. Why he scoffed at their petty complaints, and stopped showing up to socials altogether.

  Home: Cedar was born and raised in Liverpool, England. Thus, his home is Earth. He had a thick scouse accent, but its not as prevalent as it used to be.
  
  
• — APPEARANCE.

  Hair: With dark, thick hair that grows too quickly for his liking, Cedar is an expert at cutting his own hair. The sides are kept short while he allows the top to grow a couple of inches. Cedar does not like appearing unkempt and therefore, takes good care of his hair.
  
  
  Eyes: One of Cedar's more prominent and defining features are his eyes. They're deep-set and look heavy. Yet, the icy blue hue of his irises make them appear judging and watchful, characteristics true to his nature.
  
  Skin: Cedar's skin is pale and smooth with a cool undertone. Light freckles dust his cheeks, and a pinkish hue is reserved for his tired eyes and thin lips. Most of his scars are small, but he could tell you the story behind them. A particularly notable one is on the side of his right hand that was slice open by a piece of scrap metal.
  
  Body/Build: Cedar's figure is deceptive. Standing at about 5 feet 9 inches (175 centimeters) and weighing in at 136 pounds (62 kilograms), Cedar carries himself in graceful manner and hides the true strength he can pack behind a punch. In his free time, he can frequently be found exercising, favoring the treadmill above other things.
  
  Wardrobe: Preferring a very polished business style, Cedar dresses above his paygrade using thrifted and gifted articles of clothing. Most of his wardrobe lacks in any bright colors, as he prefers neutrals.

He realized early on that regardless of how ambitious one may be, there is a system that must be abided by and there are steps that need to be followed when you are alone. Most people that come into contact with him rarely see a personal side to him because he sees the world through what he claims is a realistic lens. Maybe it's baseless pessimism, but more likely it's come from what he's seen on Earth and what he'd been urged to believe by his parents. Introspection is something Cedar struggles with, and he seeks self-discovery through wanderlust.

  Backstory

  Cedar Lee Dirix was born on March 29th, 2118 in the bathtub of a tiny apartment in Liverpool, England. His family was less than fortunate and his parents plagued the household with paranoia through conspiracy theories, nihilism, and arguments. There was one thing that they mutually agreed upon: humanity brought destruction unto itself and they wanted nothing to do with space. Cedar was the opposite: all he ever wanted was to go to space.
  
  (CW: death and suicide) When he was 10, Cedar's mother died from complications after contracting a respiratory infection. When he was 17, his father had killed himself by hanging himself off of their balcony on the 16th story.
  
  The best way to get up into space and stay there was to be the one flying the spaceship. Cedar started off joining the UK's military, through which he gained access to the training and application process for a space license. The SNF flagged him, but Cedar wanted to be tied down least of all. After a couple of years spent chauffeuring the army, Cedar was offered a job as a pilot of the CS Exarch, a cargo ship owned privately by Ashley Griffiths. It was then that Cedar realized he could do freelance pilot work. Despite having an assured job with CS Exarch, Cedar still occasionally picked up other jobs. Staying in one place was never his thing.

  Relationships

  Christian Dirix; Christian was Cedar's father. They didn't have a particularly good relationship, especially when Cedar entered his teenage years. They had very different opinions and beliefs. But, after the death of Eliza, they had something that held their relationship together. Otherwise, he may the biggest contributor to Cedar's insecurity and pessimism.
  
  Eliza Dirix; Eliza was Cedar's mother. She died when he was young, so his memory of her is lacking. He favored her over his father, though.

  HAIR: Until three years ago, Virgil’s hair was a natural dark brown (albeit greying) cut into a classic crew cut to accommodate for the fierce heat; long hair merely built up body heat further, which was not optimal for carrying out long hours of manual labour. However, in recent years, the thinning of hair became prevalent all over his scalp, and rather than prolong the inevitable, he shaved it. Currently it has grown at the sides with a small patch on top: now a charcoal grey littered with white wisps of hair. Additionally, he has a moustache thick stubble the same colour.
  
  EYES: Essentially a chronicle of his life, they are an abyss of murky brown sobered by regret and lacking the hope he had as an inexperienced man. But there’s nevertheless a real familiarity in his gaze which can reassure someone and says: I understand, and I’m listening.
  
  SKIN: Virgil’s complexion signifies a life without rest: he has olive skin with a warm undertone which is now sun damaged and aged because of decades of exposure. Alongside a couple of blemishes on his forehead, there is a mole above his right eyebrow. Surprisingly, there are few wrinkles on his skin, but he is plagued by eye bags and deep creases underneath his eyes. Multiple calluses run from his palm up to the end of his fingers.
  
  BUILD: A physique only attainted through years of labour and discipline; Virgil stands at a herculean 6’4” (193cm) with a weight of 285lbs (129kg). Even beneath the overalls, the straining fabric makes his toned muscles obvious — keeping a remarkable body fat percentage of around fifteen.

  Procured through centuries of evolution and reformation, there is an abundance of power embedded within every word: designed to not just communicate, but to produce a specific emotional response.
  
  Yet sometimes, the loudest thing someone can ever do is remain silent. The conscious decision to include delayed pauses in between what we say, or to not speak at all, is an act of insight. It is powerful. And individuals such as Virgil are so self-assured in their general being and capabilities that they seldom raise their voice, they choose each word with care, and never succumb to the temptation to argue. Of course, Virgil’s size alone is causation enough for others to not pick fights with him (both verbal and physical). But Virgil carries himself with an aura of shrewdness which warns people that he is not a brute; he is wise and an independent thinker whose physique is merely an extra asset. Confrontation is not a part of his nature – it never has been. Humans are under the deception that a voice is a weapon. It isn’t. A voice is a tool we should use for the good of humanity. It is to support, inspire, and uplift those without a voice. Which is the reason why he entered the field of psychology.
  
  Regardless of the professional approach Virgil maintains with his interactions, he is far from condescending. Never is there a hint of a preconceived in his addressment of others. He views people as the same and worthy of civility and respect. Ensuring he is courteous to everybody he talks to; Virgil comes across as an amiable and welcoming, albeit stoic, man. People usually find it natural to turn to him regarding important matters. Yes, he may have been a psychologist but that’s assuming every psychologist is kind-hearted with good intentions – which simply isn’t the case. However, Virgil has a perpetual readiness to help others even if it is outside of his realm of expertise.
  
  As stated, Virgil knows his capabilities and their limits. He has a confidence about him that makes those he comes across go ‘wow’. Unbeknownst though, is he also has a degree of conceit buried within. A sense that his intelligence and understanding of life is beyond those around him, and they’re too slow to comprehend what he can. But whenever these arrogant thoughts creep in, he has learnt to recognise them, and reminds himself that yes: he is smart, and there are those who are not, but that doesn’t define them. They too have a share of skills which he doesn’t and likewise, he isn’t inferior because of it.
  
  He had always considered himself a realist. Neither expecting the best nor the worst, not trusting too much nor too little, and dealing with life day by day. That was a long time ago, and a series of unfortunate events quelled his beliefs about life. Nowadays, Virgil doesn’t have a way of life; he exists and nothing more. There’s no stopping this freight train. Despite all of this, he isn’t a martial arts expert, so his fighting style constitutes as a windmill of bones. With enough combat experience and agility, one could have an advantage over him. However, he isn’t generally a fighter either, choosing diplomacy above all else.
  
  Analytical – In every sense of the word. Capable of examining the finer details but can also take a step back to understand the bigger picture, Virgil is a problem solver. He doesn’t hold people or things at surface-level, constantly inquiring to find out more, and discovering every nuance about a situation so he has absolute control.
  
  Acuity – He may falter in the vision department, but he still has a keen sense of hearing. So, one should take precaution if they attempt to sneak up on him. Alongside this, he is mentally sharp. Virgil can process information with efficiency, accompanied by an excellent memory, and form a judgement even in the direst of situations.
  
  Survivalist – Virgil has taken on this expedition with precaution and is coming prepared. Or so he hopes; one can never prepare for the unexpected. Developed over the course of his life, Virgil has a compounded set of survival skills to ensure his and others’ survival: he can cook, purify water, dress basic wounds, create weapons, and etcetera. How many of these will be useful on a cramped and desolate ship?
  
  WEAKNESSES:
  Eyesight – His issues with vision are not debilitating. He certainly has trouble seeing without his glasses though.
  
  Endurance – Age is catching up to him. He may be damn powerful for a sixty-two-year-old, but the planet’s hazardous climate, and mental and physical strain he’s suffered, is wearing his body down. Virgil finds it difficult to maintain steady levels of stamina for lengthened periods of time with no rest - or puff of his inhaler. So lot of his labour work is done using an exoskeleton.
  
  Cybernetic Leg – It helped at first; he didn’t have to rely on his own organic and aching knees. But it’s been thirteen years since the cybernetic was first implanted, and it hasn’t been replaced since. Outdated and losing mobility, the cybernetic leg isn’t as effective as it once was.
  
  Firearm Proficiency – Not a professional sharpshooter, the pistol he’s bringing along is for when there’s no alternative way out. His fists are more useful than using a handgun, but he doesn’t approve of them either.
  

  
  
  

  FEARS: The same as any other man, Virgil has dreaded things and felt anxious, but fear is a vehement term. After almost a lifetime, there is one sole thing with such potency: that his decision to stay on Earth alone was a mistake.
  
  AILMENTS: Amputated leg from the knee down (replaced by cybernetics); undiagnosed depression (if he does in fact suffer from it, it is high functioning as he can generally make it through each day without complications); night terrors (triggered by stress); mild asthma (only in the last decade has this appeared, caused by the large-scale accumulation of dust in the atmosphere); myopia (ever since his childhood, Virgil has struggled with viewing far distance objects – always wearing a pair of small, round framed glasses).

  Since his birth on the 3rd of March 2090, there have been only two tangible statements about Virgil Maschera: he was born on Earth and it will be his resting place.
  
  There are many debts humans must pay throughout their lifetime. However, there is a tacit debt we constantly see and feel; an entity that is so invaluable most will never repay it—the progress of existence by the name ‘time’. As it is with everything, exceptions occur. Possibly, a select few individuals who are at their demise or passed have taken Death’s hand, shook it and declared: I am content with the mark I have left behind in this world, and indeed if I have not achieved all I wanted, I have forgiven myself for my misdeeds, and am ready to proceed onto the next. And Death has welcomed them. Then there are those who run and hide to avoid fate, but everybody is going to face what they owe. Either people can accept it or reject it.
  
  It’s complicated to gauge which type of person Virgil is. On a superficial level, one may presume he is the former. A man who has accepted his dues and is currently paying it with humanity. By choosing compassion and aiding others, he can pay back time; by being the best person he can be. However, to explain who Virgil Maschera is, one should understand that he himself is superficial. Not necessarily in a negative sense. It is simply a matter of Virgil being reticent. It goes without saying that there is great irony in a psychologist not opening about how they feel. There are a handful of people such as his wife and brother who have unravelled Virgil’s layers—but they are people he hasn’t communicated with in years. He never speaks about himself. He doesn’t like to. Perhaps in an almost conceited fashion, he feels he doesn’t need the service of others. Or it is because he deems himself unworthy of the help.
  
  So Virgil is the man who forgets.
  
  Memories about his life are negligible. It’s the feeling, he remembers. Delivered six years after his brother Samuel, his mother, Estela Maschera, passed away during childbirth. That’s all Virgil can say of her. He had no pictures, or any other remnant of who she was. From his perspective, she never existed to him. And in a peculiar way, he favoured it. Nothing to look back on and linger on what could have been.
  
  Afterwards his father, Silvan Maschera, moved with him and Sam to a modest farmhouse in Tuscany, just bordering the capital. He knows his name wasn’t a produce of his parents’ decision. Sam had told Virgil, for the initial years after his birth, that his father called him ‘the baby’. It sounds almost endearing, but he had no actual name. Sam selected ‘Virgil’. A throwaway name he saw in a book their father read.
  
  The second child. The damned, and the one who hailed shame upon their family just for their birth. Virgil was under Silvan’s roof and therefore he fed and sheltered the child–but it wasn’t a home, and Silvan didn’t regard him as his son. Virgil felt the harshness of slogging away on the farm at 7am before he felt the embrace of affection.
  
  Working paid jobs as soon as he could, Virgil scrounged for payment from anywhere. Having previously devoted his life to working at home, and being of a robust build, he found no trouble in earning money from manual labour work. Earth, in its declining state, didn’t need more doctors or engineers. Employers sought those such as Virgil out: who could provide food, who could undertake heavy lifting and construction.
  
  As he entered adulthood, Silvan’s health became worse owing to a neurodegenerative disease, and Virgil tended to him. Because of no reason other than it was kind. Notwithstanding his decision to treat the man who spurned him as a child, it was just a care worker and patient exchange. He provided Silvan with the essentials. Neither of them conversed, and they didn’t grow to care for each other.
  
  It wasn’t until his early twenties that Virgil left for university. He was never first in his class during school, but he was inquisitive and could think for himself - which is a lot better than most can claim. Unsupported and unheard as a child and adolescent, there was an immediate appeal to psychology; the chance to find the voice he never had and grant other people one. After buckling down for a few years, he graduated with a doctorate.
  
  It’s been twenty years since he met Anthea, fifteen since they married, thirteen since Maeve was born, nine since he retired, and five spent in seclusion. Time in between each stage is unheard of, a grey area left up for debate for those who encounter him. He’s a retired psychologist, now a solitary farmer and prepared to help those in need. That’s all people need to know. Although, why he has come out of retirement because of an investigation concerning the MHS-Desdemona is a question worth pursuing.
  

  
  

  
  
  

  ANTHEA MASCHERA (WIFE, FIFTY-TWO YEARS OLD): There is nothing straightforward about their relationship. However, the adoration these two had for years is a one in a lifetime event. A good-natured and captivating woman, she has been one of the most influential figures in Virgil’s life. Nothing she could do would provoke any animosity within him. Unfortunately, times change, and life isn’t linear. Anthea is now a person Virgil does not want to ever speak of and hasn’t done so for several years.
  
  MAEVE MASCHERA (DAUGHTER, THIRTEEN YEARS OLD): Virgil’s work has defined his life, but he still considers Maeve his greatest creation. His Aquila. Maeve’s birth and early childhood was not just one of the finest times in Virgil’s life, but one of the only points where he genuinely felt at ease and had a sense of purpose. She is living with his brother’s family on the United States respective space station. Through video recordings transmitted between Earth and the space station, they have stayed in contact – although, they don’t speak often.
  
  SAMUEL LISZT (BROTHER, SIXTY-EIGHT YEARS OLD): No matter Virgil’s stature, strength, or achievements, Sam is always going to be the ‘big brother’. These two had scant connection until Sam was a teenager. Ever since, he was the mentor and partisan that Virgil owes a lot of credit to. Married to American millionaire Alistair Liszt, they offered to pay for the transport to the United States space station. However, Virgil’s decision to not have left Earth with his family has alienated Sam.
  
  ALISTAIRS LISZT and DOMINIC LISZT (BROTHER IN LAW, SIXY-SEVEN YEARS OLD; NEPHEW, EIGHTEEN YEARS OLD): Sam’s husband and foster son, they hold a special place in Virgil’s heart; the two families have always had a cordial relationship. Alistair was a college professor turned musician (after he met Sam) and is still renowned on the United States space station.   With enlarged eyes behind the microscope, dressed in a lab coat and a whacky laugh, Yananovic Borgov is the mad scientist as good as he can be. A little innovation, wittiness and a morbid sense of humor in vitro and Yanan is the experiment's result.
  
  He’s an uncanny character due to his bizarre thoughts and the desire to share all of them. In most cases that’s unsettling but there’s a unique charm to it. He feels no shame in his insatiable hunger for deviant questions and their macabre answers. If he doesn’t ask, who will? Yanan finds his confidence in his undeniable skill in the field microbiology and enjoys to be challenged by his crew which makes him a gifted team player.
  His enthusiasm is so intriguing he's going to make you believe organisms unable for the human eye to see are the coolest thing ever. Which they are! Despite all of his quirks, he can be a loyal companion and a great mood maker. There's a lot to explore if you don't give a damn about "the way we have always done". It's 2152! Time to tear existing methods and systems apart and create new ones. His untraditional and extreme approaches increased his reputation under fellow scientists to be respected and looked up to and the view up here is tremendous! The same flexibility that allows Yanan to come up with unique plans makes him drop them entirely as the initial excitement wanes and newer thoughts come along. As a result he has difficulties to focus on tasks since boredom reaches him fast. His susceptibility to taking risks isn’t always something revolutional. Rather than that it pushes Yanan into unknown territories without any back-up plans in sight.

  Before there was Yananovic, there was subject 62.​

  
  Subject 62 was born in St. Petersburg, Russia. His mother passed away during childbirth, a father nowhere to be found. A child without caregivers on the overpopulated Earth was another burden for the planet. A russian organization on the countryside near the city 'solved' this issue and gave those children a place to call home, for the right price of course. While on the outside the building looked like a common protectory, the organization was just a facade for the illegal business violating various human rights. Orphans and neglected children were probands for medical tests such as vaccines, cosmetic products and other chemicals that haven’t been approved by authorities for human testing. Subject 62 received several shots with questionable fluids throughout his childhood. While other children became sick or even died from the testing, Subject 62 seemed to be fine. The boy of seven years developed a loud personality and became a wild child within the institute. Even though he was incredibly smart to begin with, his attention span was short and one activity was dropped for another. A doctor and chemist at the institute, Jarek Borgov, started working with the boy and described him as a piece of coal that waited to be pressed into a diamond. Mr. Borgov saw his potential and decided to take the child off the program to adopt him. He called him Yananovic.
  
  At the age of nine Mr. Borgov and his son moved to the russian space station. His father would make him study all things of importance: maths, languages, the human body, chemics and chess. Still there were moments of fun like that time when father and son destroyed their whole interior in a football match or when they performed a chemic reaction on the dining table and set the alarms in the whole station off. For a while it felt like home. Although his days in the institute became a distant memory with time, Yanan took some trauma with him. He panics about getting medical treatments by other people than himself and doesn't want any needles around him than his own. His early experiences pushed him into distrust and affected his psyche. Maybe it's the fundamental reason why he is how he is. Yanan was eightteen years old when his father decided to claim his invitation to second earth, but he didn’t follow. He joined the science program on microbiology instead. For the first time he met people his age that were interested in the same things and yet he was an outcast. Maybe it was the way he’d dress or the way he’d loudly fantasize about dangerous experiments.
  So he did them himself. In his early twenties he almost poisoned himself with a dangerous amount of radiation in attempt to make his body glow in the dark for a party. In another incident he was annoyed to bring his ID to the lab or the cafeteria all the time, so he implanted a chip with the data into the palm of his hand. Slowly people around him started to embrace the weirdness he gave off and respect him for his unconventional ideas, with the right distance.
  
  These days Yanan is still that piece of coal, it takes time to grow and thrive. But he was the best graduate in the science program of the year in '46. Only recently he was offered the spot of his profession in the SS-Azael to help the crew with his abilities. A sketchy mission to inspect what happened to the MHS-Desdemona that might involve his profession with a mighty pay? You son of a b*tch, he's in! He would’ve taken that offer even without the money-

  All or Nothing | Though Hana will fight hand and teeth to earn and keep respect from others, once she deems it's been lost beyond retrieval, she does a complete 180. Once Hana feels someone no longer a potential ally, they are the enemy.

  From the beginning, it was clear Hana Madeira's life was going to be exceptionally odd.
  
  For starters, she'd never see the halls of a school, even the pristine halls of the private ones on Second Earth. Instead of classmates or teachers, both Hana and her brother had a litany of private tutors. As she was told, she didn't have time for friends—and for her, that meant turning to the books. They were a haven for her, and she found solace in the pages of stories and theories.
  
  As she grew, she saw both her parents and her brother less and less. The only time she'd ever be with them for more than a few minutes was when she accomplished something, and for their standards, that was rare. But Hana was determined, so she spent her teenage years rifling through textbook upon textbook—and it payed off. While George was always set to be the one to inherit the company, Hana proved herself as a valuable asset. By the time she was 16, she was already knee-deep in Madeira's affairs.
  
  She had learned long ago to take every day as a competition, and whenever she dealt with the board members or swayed a negotiation in the way of the company, she felt like she won. But the better she got at everything else, the hotter her temper got. The bulk of it came when she was 17. While she was just as tactful as ever, she found herself hating those around her. Where she'd before just seen them as challenges to overcome, they were now enemies. It wasn't long before her temper would finally bubble over, and when it did, it was catastrophic.
  
  The night of May 14, 2141 was a torturously long one. Hana had spent all day in the boardroom, in a negotiations deadlock with her least favorite member of her father's board. She wasn't even supposed to be there—she was supposed to be at her brother's birthday celebration, by his side—but instead she was told that somebody had to fill in for him. As she sat at the table, a headache pounding against the inside of her skull, she could hear the sounds of the party just a few floors beneath her. Margaret just wouldn't stop blabbering, and suddenly, she was seeing red.
  
  She barely even thought of her words before they left her, but from the look on old Margaret's face, she could tell it was quite the tirade. The moment she let her voice raise to a yell, she knew she would regret it, but it felt nice.
  
  Her parents thought otherwise.
  
  For the next years, her father would never smile at her, and her mother would always whine about how it was a miracle Margaret only left and did so silently. She was told she should be only thankful that her little incident didn't reach the public eye, but Hana barely cared. This was her first taste of disgrace, and it was crushing. While it was never said out loud, she was put on bedrest from the company, and her days were so empty.
  
  It was then that for the first time in years, she found herself studying again. But this time, it wasn't just business: she had exhausted those books ten times over. For days on end, she would sit in the library, reading things that barely interested her and hating herself for it. Above everything else, she wanted a challenge (well, not above everything else). She would find that challenge when she turned to the sky.
  
  In truth, Hana had never known much about space. Madeira's operations were landlocked, and even the original Earth was too much for her to care about. But as she delved deeper into the untouched studies of it, she found something new.
  
  For the first time in her life, she had found something she truly hated.
  
  Nothing about it came easy to her. Alone in her room, late at night, she would want to yell and wish she could throw the cursed books out of her bedroom window. But she couldn't stop coming back to it. It was a challenger she was determined to fell, no matter how long it took. And while it wasn't something that would be useful for her future at Madeira in the least, she wasn't sure she had one anymore. For years, she worked away at it tirelessly in her room, the faces she used to know growing less and less familiar. Her parents didn't even know what she was doing, but as long as it stopped her from getting in their business, they didn't care.
  
  By the time she was allowed to slowly be lowered back into the world of Madeira, Hana's attentions were divided. It was an opportunity that, for so long, she had waited for, but she could barely focus. Where she once felt a pull to negotiation and strategy, she now just wanted to be back at the books. Her spare hours she would spend at one of Kepler's observatories, where she would meet some of the most interesting people in her life. For once, it felt like something that was her own.
  
  When she was 20, her parents offered her an official title within the ranks of Madeira. She would have a real place, and a real future. But the words she once would've thought life-changing just felt bland to her ears. It was then she realized that not even a little part of her belonged there anymore.
  
  Her parents were far from happy to hear that she was declining. If anything, the offer was just a formality, and they were throwing the position onto her. She was sure they had never imagined her saying no. And even though they payed for her studies and helped her become a full-blown researcher, she could tell that in their eyes she was no longer a Madeira. It stung to play the part knowing both sides didn't want to, but if it was up to her, she would just be done with them entirely.
  
  As time went on, the wounds lessened, and she was undeniably happy with her choice. Surrounded by others like her, she blossomed, growing apt in her field and a prominent figure. While it wasn't the path she had ever imagined, it was one she savored. But the old Hana would never truly leave her. Despite being friends with nearly everyone at the research center, she found herself putting up a front around all of them, even the few she liked. Her temper would still sit just below the surface, though not as bad as it was all those years ago. And, above all, she still wanted to achieve. Just research wasn't enough.
  
  When she heard of the SS-Azael's commissioning, she jumped at the opportunity. She knew she was proficient enough, and she ached to return to that relentless chase for triumph.     Hana's best memories of her father come from when she was young. When she was only a toddler, they were inseparable, but as they both aged, they grew apart. This continued until Hana denied her position at Madeira. Afterwards, he tried to reach out to her more, but only to convince her to come back.   Romero's SNF flight suit​

  Appearance: Standing at 5'11 with few muscles, Romero is a lanky Hispanic man with curly brown hair and yellow eyes hidden behind his flight suit. His expression is usually unreadable under the protection of his visor.
  
  Wardrobe: Romero is currently wearing his old SNF flight suit. All symbols indicating the suit belonged to the SNF have been long since removed and is now currently an unmarked suit. The suit has a dark green and black color scheme and looks to be in immaculate condition. No paint is worn, no creases are to be seen, and the helmet visor gleams in the light. The flight suit is made of strong carbon fiber material meant to protect the wearer from fire, puncture wounds, and blunt force trauma. There is a light steel vest inserted over his chest and further padding on his arms and legs. Of course, none of that would really help a pilot crashing through the atmosphere of a planet, but it's the thought that counts. Just underneath the chin of the helmet is a switch that closes and opens airways into his helmet, allowing him to make the suit airtight. With a small oxygen tank built into the suit, Romero can last a solid dozen or so minutes before he begins to suffocate. Underneath the suit, Romero is simply wearing a grey tank top and matching pants.
  
  Inventory: Romero did not bring a weapon with him on the flight. The only thing Romero has on hand are the functions of his suit and a few basic tools. His helmet has a built-in night vision filter and earpiece, allowing him to communicate with his team and see in the dark. Other than that he has a basic multi-tool and small welder meant for small and basic maintenance.

  History: Born on Earth to two middle-class parents that were too stubborn to move into the space stations floating above the atmosphere, Romero had a pretty easy life at the start. Spain was a lovely country to live in, disregarding the above-average temperatures, so he had a pretty nice childhood all things considered. He was a little distant with other kids and never really formed any lasting friendships, but it could have been worse. He could've been born in what was left of Detroit after all.
  
  Growing up, Romero A) got into century-year-old movies like Dawn of the dead and star Wars and B) grew an unhealthy fascination towards the SNF. It was hard to describe what the appeal was to him at the time. He didn't want to leave or see the stars or anything. He liked Earth, it was his home. A juvenile part of him saw their rifles and body armor, and said "Cool". so, that was his plan. Join the SNF when he turned 18, do something, profit. He was not good with life plans, obviously.
  
  So he did. At 16 he traveled to America to learn English and enlist with the marines. By the time he turned 18, he was fluent in English and ready to hop aboard the SNF. Joining the marines, it turned out, was the worst possible thing he could have done. Why? Because of Bootcamp. Because Bootcamp is shit in every way and everyone who's ever been to Bootcamp will agree that it's shit. In Romero's humble opinion, if you like Bootcamp, then go to hell, no you don't, and stop lying to yourself. Pissy superiors that scream at you if you don't call them by their rank, exhausting workouts that went on for hours, up at the crack of dawn, crappy food, heavy gear that look cool in theory but just suck in practice, and if you complain once than you're a dead man because the drill sergeants will hear and they'll be pissed. So yeah. Bootcamp sucked, but who cared? He could stick it out long enough to get into action. He was a lazy man at heart, sure, but he could work.
  
  Except he couldn't because he broke his shoulder in three places. He doesn't like talking about it. After he healed up, he couldn't continue service because his shoulder got in the way of physical activity. So, they showed him the door and he went back to Spain. Only a month after he got home, his parents both died of Influenza. The living conditions on Earth had worsened, letting simple diseases like the Flu pick off his parents.
  
  With nothing tethering him to Earth anymore, Romero joined back up with the SNF, this time to be a pilot. He didn't need a perfect health check to fly a fighter. All he needed was one good arm, at least. The training wasn't even too physical either, which was a relief. The living conditions were noticeably better, as well as food and uniforms. The airforce would always have the most funding it seemed. He proceeded to work on larger and smaller ships as a pilot, a member of the bridge crew, or a basic engineer.
  
  Sticking with the force until he was 20, Romero hopped ship and became a freelance pilot. He has his reasons for quitting, which he will keep to himself. He managed to take his flight suit with him after he left, which he considered a win. Flying commercially for a while, Romero got bored. He needed action. So, he signed up with a militaristic contract agency. Pilots, soldiers, bodyguards, all the works for the paranoid CEO to buy for their own protection. He stuck with the agency for a long while, working as a pilot for the occasional trillionaire who thought people were out to get them. When he was 25, he left the agency to work for a private army for some tech company on Second Earth. He'd always thought owning a private army was the most paranoid a CEO could get, but then the FOS attacked, so what does he know?
  
  Yes, he was there. Yes, he shot down two fighters breaching the atmosphere. No, it was not a defining moment of his life. The battle was over as quickly as it had started, there really wasn't much to tell.
  
  Life went on afterward. Resigning from the private army, he joined back up with the contracting agency before quitting, rejoining, and repeating. He goes where the action is. He joins what's intriguing. And right now? The offer MHC gave him has piqued his interest.
  
  So that's where he is now, carting a dozen people he's never met to an unresponsive mining ship, hoping something interesting happens.
  
  Personality: Witty, reckless, and crude, Romero proves to be quite the character. His bad jokes roll off the tongue in droves, his excessive amount of cuss words, and the fact he's a danger to himself and others are some of his most defining characteristics. In part, it's because those are some of the only characteristics he shows. No one bothers getting to know him, and he makes no effort to encourage them. Sure, he doesn't like authority, especially when they pull rank, but his respect goes a LONG way in getting him to listen to someone, and he can be extremely loyal when he wants to be. The man also makes plenty of movie references while trying to keep a carefree attitude at all times, even in dire situations.

    born in the wastelands, it was inevitable that amaia would see both the best and the worst of humanity.
    
    her father was a man whose desires outweighed her and her brother's needs; drugs came before meals, and slaps and curses came after complaints. asier was only four years older than her, but he'd stood between her and the world without a frown or a flinch for as long as she could remember. he would scrounge up meals from what seemed to be thin air—he would whisper stories that brought light to her in the darkness—and he would always remind her to never ask about their mother, no matter what.
    
    a few weeks after his sixteenth birthday, and a few weeks before her twelfth, asier woke amaia up in the middle of the night. they'd tiptoed past their father, who was snoring wetly into the living room carpet, and ran as far and as fast as they could. when she complained that her feet were tired, asier knelt in the sand and had her climb onto his back; then he continued jogging until they came to a crossroads, just as the sun was rising. they waited there until it was long past noon, throats parched and skin burning, and a truck idled to a stop at the corner, hissing storm-gray clouds into the troposphere. a woman whose face amaia could never recall offered them a ride.
    
    a little over two days later, they were in a small alaskan city; a little over two years later, asier began to talk about jobs and space stations, wishing on stars and seeing the impossible—snow and rain and the galaxy, up close and personal. when amaia turned eighteen, asier gave her an envelope full of money and a mountain of unanswered questions. he told her to go to school; he told her he was going to start working in a city bigger than ketchikan, alaska, and he would send her more envelopes like this every month.
    
    two and a half years and thirty envelopes later, he called her and asked if she would go to space with him.

    born on earth, chapman has faced nothing but adversity throughout her life - yet she has persevered through it all. from a young age, she was filled with determination and ambition to succeed above what was expected of a girl from a poor, overcrowded neighbourhood. thus, she buckled down and worked her ass off in school to become valedictorian and was offered a full-ride scholarship to a local university. however, it still wasn't enough; chapman declined the offer and in a ballsy move, she applied for the SNF's military service.
    
    chapman shot through the ranks and became a distinguished sergeant in no time for her continuous outstanding performance in missions. she demanded respect and damn anyone who crossed her. the aloof sergeant soon fell in love with activist and artist, siana juarez. siana seemingly was the only one who could melt away the hard exterior of chapman and finally filled a void she had always had. the pair married within a few months and even adopted a baby boy. considering her impressive salary, chapman was able to move her wife and son to second earth, along with her parents who didn't agree with her marriage (or rather her sexuality). despite working extensively, chapman always made time for her family, raising their son, markus, with nothing but love and acceptance.
    
    the next fifteen year of her life were full of cherished memories, medals and awards, climbing the military ranks and the untimely death of her son. killed in the infamous second earth rebellion, chapman demanded she oversees the new task force which was created to dismantle the organised group responsible for the rebellion. her grief translated into obsessing over her new position with sleepless nights, working weekends and spending less time at home and away from her wife who was also grieving. despite her success in running the task force which has captured and arrested several key players, chapman was placed on forced-leave after her misconduct was revealed to her superiors (said misconduct is redacted from public records).
    
    her marriage on the rocks and desperate to do something productive, chapman jumped at the opportunity to lead the newly-appointed crew of the ss-azael.

    genesis demarco is a wild card—one never knows what they’re getting into with her, and that’s the way she likes it. she prefers to keep people on their toes because in a way, it gives her the upper hand in situations, though there have been plenty of instances when even she didn’t know what her next move was going to be until it played out. this can be a good thing or a bad thing, just like her seemingly endless supply of bravery. what is her biggest strength has also proven to be, in certain situations, her biggest downfall. gen never backs down from a challenge—partially due to her constant need to feed her ego and confirm her own strength to herself—even if it would be the smartest thing to do in that moment. this isn’t to say that she’s dumb—she’s actually quite intelligent—but if she has the choice between using her brawn or her brain, she’d much rather rely on her fists to do the talking as they have shown themselves to be a much quicker and effective way of achieving her means. despite her irritable disposition and harsh reputation, genesis is loyal, almost to a fault, to what she cares about, whether that be a person or a cause. once she has her heart set on something, it’ll take death itself to knock her off-course. there’s very few people that know this side of her, though. she looks out for and depends on herself most of all and has trouble when it comes to asking for help, not to mention coming to terms with the fact that she needs help in the first place. in her eyes, that’s weakness, and genesis demarco is many things, but weak is not one of them.

    alertness - it takes a lot to catch genesis off-guard, though it has been known to happen. she’s constantly surveying her surroundings for anything that could possibly pose a threat. call her paranoid all you want, but she’d much rather be safe than sorry.
    high tolerance to pain - living without a heavy parental presence in her life taught gen to be tough from a young age, which came in handy for her time in the military. she’s good at what some people might refer to as, “taking it like a man,” though she would call that sexist. really, she just has a knack for not showing signs distress, though whether or not she’s simply hiding the fact she is in pain and is instead nothing more than a good actress remains to be seen.
    improvisation - this could also fall in line with resourcefulness. genesis is good at using her surroundings to her advantage, whether that be using something as a weapon that’s not meant to be or knocking over the nearest object to cause a distraction in order for her to get away just long enough for her to regain the upper hand.
    not squeamish - considering gen’s original line of work, this is somewhat of a job qualification. she’s not easily grossed out and likes to brag that she’s got a stomach of steel.
    physical combat - genesis has always been a fighter, and the time she spent with the snf only toughened her up. she doesn’t always play by the rules, though, but rather by what will give her an advantage, and if that means getting her knuckles a little bloody, so be it.
    shooting a gun - during her military training, gen was taught how to properly fire a gun. though it’s not her first choice in a fight, she’s fairly proficient at it, and it’s a useful skill to have just in case.
    sneakiness - this could also be categorized as ‘unpredictability.’ genesis bides her time and strikes when her opponent least expects it. although she often flies by the seat of her pants, gen is nothing short of cunning.
    thinking on her feet - sometimes, gen’s impulsivity comes as an advantage. on more than one occasion, a last-minute choice has spared her life. she’s quick to spring into action and doesn’t waste time second-guessing herself, which has proven to be both a good thing and a bad thing, though luckily for her, mostly beneficial.

    doesn’t play well with others - this specific trait often worked against genesis while in the military. she has a sort of lone wolf mentality—she does what’s best for her rather than taking in what would be most beneficial for the good of a team. she has a nasty habit of not seeing other people’s opinions and gets frustrated when they don’t want to do things her way, in which case she’ll go against the general consensus and do what she wants anyway. although this is a bad practice, most of the time, things play out in her favor because she picks up on details that others missed in the planning stage.
    impulsive - although things generally work out for her, it would be smart of gen to have a plan before running headlong into a fight. she has an “act now, think later” sort of strategy, and this way of doing things might not work out for her on her trip to space.
    merciless - while genesis considers this trait as some sort of wisdom—knowing when showing kindness would result in failure—others view it as ruthless. in all actuality, she just knows the reality of war and that sometimes, showing mercy could come back to bite you later if youre
    pridefulness - gen has a hard time accepting any sort of aid offered to her by others. this is largely due to her somewhat distrusting nature and being unsure of whether or not their intentions are to help or harm—are they really trying to assist her, or are they going to stab her in the back as soon as she accepts their motives as pure?

    perhaps genesis should have given more thought to her decision of joining the navy. as someone who found great joy in defying authority and making her own rules, any other career path would have been more suiting. in her defense, being a soldier had never been part of the original plan--her initial goal had always been to pursue a degree of some sort, but after that fell through (because flying by the seat of your pants in terms of grades and missing school due to excessive "behavioural problems" is never a good strategy for getting into university), she found herself forced to make a last-minute decision. her gpa was just high enough for her to enlist in the military, and given her experience in fighting, it felt like a somewhat reasonable substitute.
    
    the navy wasn't all it was cracked up to be, though. it wasn't the bloody battles that gen hated so much as the way she was treated by not only her superiors, but her peers, too. she was one of the youngest members of her unit at 19 years old as well as one of the only females. she had to work extra hard to get noticed and even harder if she wanted her voice to be heard. in most circumstances, they didn't give her the time of day, despite how skilled she was. the only instances when she was given attention, it was unwanted, whether it was being reprimanded for not sticking to the plan or unsolicited cat-calls from her fellow comrades. to say that she hated her time in the military would be an understatement.

    She did not dream of becoming a nurse. It was merely a convenient means to an end. Where Amelie came from, conveniences were like winning the lottery.
    
    Born on the lower levels of Arcology 12 in overcrowded London to a German mother of Jewish descent and an American father who worked as a machine technician for one of the many megacorps, Amelie was brought up in a harsh neighbourhood. Rife with crime and gang-related activities, the unsavouriness of her environment was such that you could never rely on emergency services. Cops would arrive only when bodies grew cold and paramedics appeared just in time to cart corpses away for cremation. It was tough, but it only made the young family tougher. Being of smaller stature, young Amelie had to grow up fast, if not in size then in mind. Learning to be street-smart and quick-thinking to weasel her way out of bullies and dangerous situations.
    
    But though it was home, she soon began to feel restless. Every time she'd hear the hum of starships, she'd run to the balcony and peer out from between the overcrowded furniture and storage boxes just to look at the transports make their way into orbit. And during the nights, she could make out the gargantuan bleeps of light floating through the sky. She knew they weren't stars, but rather the space-stations. Her father told her so. She'd watch them and wonder, if life would be better out there. This curiosity and longing would remain a part of who she was through life.
    
    Amelie for the most part was an amicable girl. Friendly and warm to those with no ill-intentions. But she much preferred the quietness of relative solitude than the screaming laughter of urchins playing games amidst the rubbish-strewn streets. So it was that she hung out at her elderly neighbour's house on a regular basis. Bringing cakes and baked goods to the retired nurse who lived alone. It was also here where the first seeds of her career were planted. Amidst the piles of old dusty hollo-books, she found the old lady's nursing guides and textbooks. And for the fact that she had nothing else better to do, she devoured them every afternoon for years while listening to the old-fart ramble on about her glory days.
    
    So it was, that when she was seventeen years of age, she witnessed a gang attempting to carry out a murder in one of the darker alleyways, on the way back from school. A gang of four had cornered a young man, who was fighting for his life. On the ground and perhaps already dead, were two men in suits. Judging from the scene, the young man had to be someone of importance while the two who were already dead were perhaps his escorts. She ducked into a darkened alcove just as she heard two shots ring out, drowning out the gurgling cries of the victim. Held her breath as she watched the four men take their leave, waited for a moment longer before she came to her senses and dial for an emergency. Rushing to the scene as she spoke hurriedly to the dispatch, she realised that the young man was still alive. Shocked by the revelation and suddenly eager to do something, she put her accumulated knowledge to work, doing what she could to stabilise his condition and keep him from bleeding out.
    
    When the paramedics eventually arrived, it was to their pleasant surprise to find the young man still alive, thanks to Amelie's amateur, if effective, methods. It was the first time Amelie felt in control. Like she had done something. So when the paramedics loaded up the unconscious man into the ambulance, she asked if she could come along. One thing led to the next and Amelie found herself with an entry with commendations to the local hospital to study as a nurse. Though she only had a partial scholarship, her delighted family and elderly neighbour managed to pool enough money to fund her studies. Amelie turned out to be more than decent, would've been amazing had she not have to spend most of her break time taking up part-time jobs to support her expenses. But it was enough.
    
    In the following years, life was finally turning for the better. The sky no longer stifling and cold with their metallic boundaries. She could work her way up. Different from the others, her curiosity and longing to know what lay up above drove her onwards. Then he came along and she fell helplessly in love. She recognised the cool grey eyes and high cheekbones the instant she saw him. The one she saved and inadvertently opened a path for her. The two instantly bonded. It did not matter that he was the son of a local mafia, which was why he'd been targetted in the first place. She soon learned that he and his father did not see eye-to-eye. He wanted to be different, to do things right. It was the first time the usually introverted girl felt such kinship with someone and like a car speeding down a highway with dead brakes, she was swept off her feet by Damien Strauss. He was a huggable large man, tall, charming and he knew how to tickle her funny-bone. He made her feel safe.
    
    Safe. . .
    
    Twenty-five years old. Wretched. Abused. Broken.
    
    She had given him everything and he had taken everything away. Things had taken a sharp dive for the worse the moment they were married and she realised she was pregnant with his child. No, not an overnight thing of course even if she had ignored the warning signs. She'd disregarded them, put them at the back of her mind thinking it was nothing. Made excuses for him until she could no longer think straight when she was sent flying halfway across the room from a punch she didn't see coming. He was maniacally obsessive, rudely domineering and constantly paranoid and suspicious of all her relationships. A grateful patient had sent her a box of chocolates ticking him off. They argued for hours until he suddenly snapped. She didn't know if he would've killed her that day if she hadn't run. It hurt to run away from the place you thought you belonged. But her survival instincts disinterred to the surface and she knew she had to get out, otherwise the cops would arrive only in time to find a dead woman.
    
    Amelie did manage to get help. But if she thought the torment would end there, she was wrong. Though he'd been put temporarily behind bars, it wasn't long before Amelie realised she was being followed. The apple did not fall far from the tree. Like father like son. Even while incarcerated, Damien had set his men to hound her every move. But while they did not so much as lay a finger on her, it left her feeling insecure and paranoid. That was when she knew she had to leave. Selling all she had and taking her mother with her (her father had passed due to disease), she moved to her father's hometown of New York where she gave birth to Hannah, the delight of her life. Though far from her abusive past, it still left a deep scar on her soul. She'd never feel safe. Not until she put light-years between her and the horrible memories. And so Amelie constantly worked and studied, improving herself so that she could one day give her daughter a better life. Not on earth, not at the space-stations, but perhaps on Earth 2.
    
    These days, Amelie works in the American space-station while her daughter is looked after by her mother down on earth. The rent is steep, but living alone, she could make do. The job pays higher, though she saves most of it for her loved ones. Always looking for a way to earn more, she signed up as a freelancer for a Flight Nurse Agency. It was here where she was offered an opening to serve onboard the SS-Azael for the MHS. Though it would take her even further away from her remaining family, the payout was just too good to pass on.

  “Wats dat?” The child's lustrous eyes glowed with interest. Yellow-drab glitter of brown irises turned silvery with the pale rays of the night easily sinking through the paneless window. Pupils full and curious, trying to identify the object in the dim dark of the moonlit bedroom.
  
  “It's a knife, toto.” The older boy flipped the gnarled blade with mimicked swagger. Dropping it with a hiss when the tip punctured his finger, drawing blood. Cave picked it up from the blanket, diminutive hands carefully inspecting the hardwear. He noticed it was sharpened on both edges. “Where did you find it?”
  
  Nash sucked on his aching thumb, rolling his bare shoulder halfheartedly. “‘I didn’t find it, I earned it.” Cave glanced up with his mouth gaped, naturally long and soft looking eyelashes fluttering with surprise. “Earned..? How?” The curved blade with an ivory grip was probably the coolest thing he ever held!
  
  “Want me to show you?” Four year old gingerly nodded.
  
  “A’ight. But you can’t tell them.” Mama and Papa.

  I still remember the gunshots, y'know? And they never sound like those in old movies. In favela they were clear and unbearable. Something close to a lightning strike, or like getting kicked to the head. Blearing down the hills, jouncing around the low architecture of tin-can, solar-powered houses. Chasing the wind along the neverending miles of the wasteland.
  
  But these shots didn't echo in the dirty streets. Instead the muzzle-flash flared up in the baby room. Where my Mom was feeding our two months-old sister with formula. Dad wasn't home. I don't know where he was, probably already dead. Because after that night we never saw him again. Just like her.
  
  I remember the gunshots... but it's her blood-curdling scream that sometimes wakes me up at night.

  "My baby!!! What did you do to my baby!!!"
  
  Another bang. Paralyzing.
  
  "Run!" Nash's fingers tightened on his little paw and the older boy dragged Cave through the window. Just in pajama pants, clutching the crooked knife as if his life depended on it. Younger brother's bare feet tapped against aluminum before the other helped him climb the neighboring construction. Mismatched walls and roofs expanded along the base of the hill range, below the city. Marking the border between gang ruled badlands and the skyscrapers housing those living more governed lives.
  
  Their lungs stung with grating breaths and their unclothed feet ached from the brutal spurt. They stopped by the urban fringe. Before finding a way to crawl into the safety of a cool, dark place. Shapes and contours of the machinery crowding the unnamed space blocked the moonlight that encroached through the soiled glass of the small windows lined along the catwalk.
  
  The two plopped to the cold ground with their sleepwear-covered bottoms. Cave hugged his knees, his rabbiting heart throbbing in his little ribcage. Nash wrapped one arm around the other and they just sat there. Calming their breaths and involuntarily allowing the reality to catch up.
  
  "We left her." There was a tremble in Cave’s voice, bottom lip twitching.
  
  Nash looked at his younger sibling, his own mouth drawn inward with silent pain shining in hazel orbs.
  
  "We left her, bròder." Cave repeated.
  
  But his eyes lost the glint of harsh conviction. Widening with glossy sheen bursting from the corners when the merciless memory of their mother's falling body tore his little heart. Round face buckled and another exhale came hot and wet with streaming tears. Nash abruptly turned his head to not see his brother crying. Chest heaving with rapid inhales, as if he was close to hyperventilating.
  
  There were no other words between the two. Just silent grief that twisted their bodies and burnt their eyes. Until exhaustion overtook them, plunging into the darkness of healing sleep.
  
  The morning smelled and tasted like dust. Cave woke up cradled to his older brother's chest. His scrawny figure sore, throat itchy and swollen. Both spent the night curled on the filthy floor of the now unsealed and sunlit warehouse. The beams highlighted the particles swirling in the air after the younger boy sneezed, disturbing them.
  
  Nash wasn't sleeping. He sniffed and quietly asked, voice hoarse. “You awake?”
  
  They sat up and Cave rubbed his red-rimmed eyes. Brows knitting when he saw Nash raising his new knife. "What are you doing..."
  
  The one year-older boy sunk the tip of the karambit into his open palm and cut skin across it. "Don't be maricas, just give me your hand." After a moment of hesitation Cave complied. He didn't waver until the same blood-coated tip pierced his tender skin. He grimaced and squirmed in his spot but he didn't pull away.
  
  "Now." Nash let the blade clatter to the floor and he unhesitatingly clasped their injured hands together. In a tight hold like arm-wrestlers do. "It's just you and me, toto. We're not just brothers now, y’ hear me?" Cave’s lungs felt constricted with hurt but his heart swelled with hope, so he nodded to other's words.
  
  "We're blood brothers."
  
  
  Then both jolted, startled upon hearing the tiny, strange voice in between the stored equipment. "Daaad..?" The Asian face that peered from cover belonged to a five year old boy, the son of the local mechanic.
  
  "There's someone here." Christian stepped into sight and the three sets of young, innocent eyes linked for the first time. Eventually about to become bound forever.

  His family took us in and with time Christian earned his own scar across the inner side of his palm. Life wasn't easy but it was pretty simple, with each of us eventually choosing his own path. Smart boy followed in his Dad's footsteps. Becoming more than just a local mechanic. He got a job at the military space station. At first maintaining then enhancing exo-suits. Upgraded versions of the ones I was wearing after I enlisted. Yeah they baited me with adventure and fed me propaganda the moment they recognized I dreamt of traveling. But it was the sense of the brotherhood that hooked me.
  
  Nash? Last time I met him on the leave, on my 21th birthday. He couldn't stop teasing me about the uniform, even though it was after my third deployment. But man, the spark in his eyes... I could see that pride in there. Not for serving the country, no. He hardly believed in such bullshit. Didn't trust no authority either. Well, maybe with one exception. Our adoptive mother and her iron fist rules concerning eating queijadinha before dinner. He learnt his lesson the hard way, we all did... But Nash would never count on no enforcer. Still, he was proud of the kind of man I became.
  
  I promised him something that night. After we got smashed and just chilled on the rooftop. Gazing up at the stars and talking about Christian, the third amigo. Third musketeer. Our brains. I promised Nash back then, that one more deployment or two and I'll have enough credits to take us both there. To Christian. To the stars.
  
  I did meet my Asian sibling a year after, but not at the space station. Back home, at the funeral.
  
  Nothing changed. Our parents lived decent lives on Earth, Christian made their name famous in another part of our galaxy. But something did change, deep inside me. I wasn't able to pull Nash out of the gang life he was part of since I remember, not until it was too late. But I realized I was still in control of my own fate. So I aced what tests I could and I got on the spacecraft.
  
  First Boot, then Basic, and I finally got my brand new exo. Capable of much more than when I was on Earth. That's when I met Denzel, and only then I realized how much I was missing Nash...
  
  Not like the asshole was a substitute, they were hardly alike. But... he did patch the hollow in my silly heart. Soon we were the golden boys of the squad and life was good again.

White shirt stretched by the upper buttons, dangerously close to being ripped open after he pressed against her back. Silently asserting dominance in the most primal manner, like only an animal could.
  
  He wasn't even eighteen but he was already taller than his mother. Nearly as strong as his father before multiple sclerosis changed man's life. Slowly feeding on the hefty body of the renowned pilot. Until his servants had to carry him between bed and bathroom. So thin, so vulnerable. So fucking weak. Not a man anymore. Not a prey even. Just a living and breathing road kill. Food for maggots.
  
  "Denzel-" Her elevated breathing left a sheen of moisture on the mat-steel door. Strong, mature woman. The far right Republican Senator and Second Earth's Senate's majority leader. Now reduced to a girl abused by a bully. "Denzel. Stop." She had to force herself to insert the note of authority into the tone shook with fear. Something changed after that night. After she turned away when Denzel pressed the pillow to his father's mouth. It was for the suffering man's own good. They did it for him. Or so she would tell herself when self medicating with a glass of Scotch.
  
  The woman was always covertly afraid of her boy, of what he could do. But after that night... she didn't have to imagine. She already knew what Denzel was capable of. Without even a hint of doubt or remorse scarring his expression.
  
  "Stop."
  
  He pulled away. Message delivered. After that she stopped trying to control him. Stopped trying to tell him what to do. After that day? Denzel could do whatever the fuck he wanted and get away with the Senator's protection.

  Parties. Brawls. Joyriding spacecrafts and breaking into restricted areas. Crashing expensive toys and wasting money. Wild escapades to the protected nature parks. So his mother's heart almost gave out from stupefying revelation when Denzel announced his plans few years later. He was joining the military. But not the homeland security of Second Earth. Her son was going to stars. And privately, she couldn't have been happier...
  
  Denzel's behavior was bordering unacceptable but the influential politician, at the time running for President couldn't allow trouble going public. She made sure there were no records of any incidents in his file and wanted him gone. So it brought her peace when Denzel removed himself from her world completely. Military life suited him just right and after finding his pseudo "better half" in the person of his best buddy, the two daredevils began playing house when on the leave. On the exclusive spaceship that Denzel acquired for deceased daddy's funds.

    Jin was an Earthborn child and had a good quality of upbringing. While he was Korean by descent, his father had moved to the United Kingdom in his mid twenties with his wife to start a new life. Jin arrived in the world one year later. His fathers work as a specialist energy engineer meant that they had enough of an income to live in the better part of their city, away from the rampant crime and terrorist activity.
    
    Highly educated and intelligent, Jin was often ahead of others in his class and was heading for a certain career following in his fathers footsteps. However, not long after his eighteenth birthday his world was turned upside down when his fathers place of work was assaulted by rebels. Jin's father died and from that moment the young mans changed forever. Instead of a life as a specialist energy engineer, he found himself signing up for the SNF military.
    
    He served for multiple years with distinction but repeatedly refused promotion, instead wanting nothing more than to get revenge on those that had killed his father. Seven years into his service he witnessed a massacre of rebels that changed his perspective forever. He could understand the killing of the rebel fighters, but seeing other men in his unit follow orders to slaughter their families in a hail of gunfire was not something he could be part of. However, before he could raise the alarm on what was happening to the brass back home, he was on the receiving end of a deadly ambush.
    
    The APC he and his unit were travelling in was hit by an IED before being set upon by a small army of rebels. Over half his squad were instantly killed by the IED while Jin found himself blown from the vehicle. As he arose he looked to his left to see that his arm was several feet away from him. He could feel a coldness start to settle over him, but the sight of rebels gunning down his unit snapped him back to reality. He did what he could to quickly patch up his wound before starting to drag himself away from the ambush. For what seemed like hours, he dragged himself along one handed, expecting a bullet to come from behind and end his life for good. Luckily for him it never came and he eventually blacked out two miles from the ambush site.
    
    When he awoke he was in the hospital and found out that only three of the twenty man squad had managed to survive. He mourned the people he had come to love as brothers and sisters but couldn't shake the memory of them shooting down the innocent families of the rebels. He tried to speak to senior military officials but they all told him the same thing, don't put your neck on the line for them. It was clear the order to kill the civilians had come from the upper echelon and so Jin had no choice but to quit.
    
    Jin took some time to himself, trying to overcome the trauma of his experience and over the year that followed he made great strides. The reality was that he would never truly be able to shake loose what had happened but he had done all that he could. As his money began to dry up he took a job working an agency that supplied engineers to spacecraft. For the years that followed he worked across all manners of vessels repairing hulls, engines, piloting exo's and whatever mundane tasks they had for him.     pritchard was born on the united kingdom's space station to a young couple of welders. a near-photographic memory leaves pritchard vividly remembers his father calling the tottling 5-year-old an accident, a strain on his parent's marriage, income and a complete nuisance. then his father up and left a year later, leaving a postnatally depressed mother and young child behind without a word.
    
    his mother doted on him after that, almost obsessively so, as he was truly all she had. coddled and sheltered, pritchard never developed properly socially, which left him open to being bullied by other children on the space station. he didn't understand why people disliked him and his only comfort was found within his mother which left him overly co-dependent on her affection and attention.
    
    he didn't have the same physical prowess as his parents which left his future up in the air. however, as a teenager, a spokesperson for the MHC came to his class — dressed in a nice suit, an award-winning smile and boasted about how at MHC they were a family who looked out for one another. while it may of all been recruitment drabble, pritchard ate it up, approaching the spokesperson after class. it was everything he desired and the MHC spokesperson handed him the brochure for their intern program.
    
    pritchard went on to graduate high school with decent grades and applied for the MHC intern program. making the cut, pritchard loved the structure and organisation the corporation prided themselves on. once he finished his internship, he was offered a full position at their UK sector.
    
    fifteen years later, pritchard has barely moved up the work ladder despite his work-ethic. he tries desperately to fit in with his co-workers, yet, he is still the same fragile little boy wanting nothing more than to be enough for his father. pritchard still lives with his mother who still coddles him, leaving him unable to grow as an individual and emotionally mature enough to stand up for himself and take what he deserves.
    
    finally, the opportunity of a lifetime came, his boss asking him to represent MHC on an expedition aboard the ss-azael to make sure the crew upholds their values and regulations. he was told if he does a good job and everything goes smoothly he will be amply rewarded. pritchard snapped at the opportunity, hoping this is what he needed to prove his worth.

    lacasa was brought into the world too early — being born prematurely — to a mother who sadly didn't survive due to birthing complications. her father was absolutely heartbroken, especially considering his child's survival was touch and go for months. he prayed constantly while grieving the death of his wife, never leaving the incubator's side. seemingly his prayers were answered, with lacasa surviving the doctor's grim diagnosis. the next few years were difficult, spending a majority of her childhood in an overcrowded hospital, thanks to her weak immune system and other health complications.
    
    her father really tried, working long hours while a neighbour babysits her, attending regular (and expensive) doctor consultations for her health complications and barely having time to himself. ultimately, he cracked under the immense pressure of a single, grieving father; finding solace in the bottom of a bottle. the drinking only worsened when his warped religious views conflicted with his child identifying as the opposite sex. he didn't seem to resent lacasa, nor did he ever take it out on her (physically or verbally), instead he seemed to blame himself.
    
    as a teenager, lacasa had enough; her father completely distanced himself and only seemed to talk to her when it came to her health complications. just shy off fifteen, a young and reckless lacasa snuck out to the nearest space centre and hid in one of the docked spaceships. once the ship entered orbit, a burly man found her hiding in the cargo bay; instead of anger, the man offered the wide-eyed girl something to eat.
    
    the rest is history, with lacasa being raised by the rag-tag mercenary crew of the ss-amora. the dozen men and women of the tightly-bonded crew were hesitant at first when their captain said she would be staying aboard for obvious reasons. yet, lacasa seemed to grow on them with her charismatic and electrifying personality and offered a refreshing sense of morale on missions. wanting to prove her worth and earn her keep, lacasa became their unofficial comms officer. not only was she being given cuts on the contracts and a place to stay, but lacasa was also given something she always wanted — a family who loved her. they even helped her pay for her transition and have been nothing but supportive and accepting.
    
    lacasa has grown into an invaluable asset to the crew, becoming an excellent comms officer and even learning multiple languages. she has spent the last seven years on the ss-amora, fitting perfectly into their little family-like crew, completing countless contracts and making irreplaceable memories.
    
    that was until the engine combusted and blew up the ship while they were docked at a space station. luckily, no one was on board, but it has left them stranded and homeless aboard a space station. everyone has parted ways, for the time being, trying to scrounge up the funds to buy a new ship. lacasa accepted the expedition aboard the ss-azael to finally pay back the ss-amora's crew for everything they have done for her and ultimately to get the crew back together aboard a new ship paid by MHC's money.

    Body/Build: He has an athletic build but is out of shape and it is proven by the lack of tone he has over his muscles. He stands at 5'11 3/4 but to keep it simple he just says he's 6'0 as with the right shoes on he's about 6'1. He has has a long and strong build as he is more on the lanky side but doesn't seem overly skinny and frail
    Distinguishing Features: His large eyes and the soft look he gives. His tattoo over his right eyebrow of the word "Sonder" and a small cross under his left eye. His almost uncanny deep yet smooth voice. His odor that smells like a nice cologne with a hint of weed. How hard his jaw pops when he tends to focus abnormally.
    Wardrobe: Dion is attracted to darker and more earthly colors as they usually tend to be the comfiest for him in his mind and also it's a natural fact darker clothing makes you seem more attractive. He doesn't mind wearing colors that wouldn't be in that earthly color mix but it's not very often when you see him wear something like that out. His style in general is rather complex as some days he'll wear sweat suits and others he'll wear a white tank top and khakis. The way he dresses mainly goes with the occasion though as if he's going out on the town and have fun he'll wear something rather comfy and eye-catching but if he's feeling more chill and just running errands he'll through on a white tee and some khaki shorts. Though one thing that is noticeable about his style is he's a sneakerhead and buys a lot of shoes trending or not. He also wears jewelry but is more of a ring and bracelets guy than a chain guy, he has two rings though one being a regular silver band and the other being a silver mood ring, a plain thin silver bracelet, and two small diamond stud earrings
    Inventory: Since he's in a working environment Dior carries a small black tactical bag that carries his equipment and other belongs consisting of a 3 USB devices, a small computer that can snap into a tablet, a rather thick looking phone, an aux cord, a few bags of candy and snacks, half a can of cologne, and large plasma knife. What he doesn't carry in his bag is a wireless earpiece that he can use to connect to devices and listen to audio or even use it to boost his hearing sensitivity with the features of showing him his vitals, afflictions, and injuries on a screen he can only see.     Dion is a smoker who's been smoking for a rather long time in his life and still does it today. He tries to keep it professional so he won't do it during jobs unless he's on break or simply is allowed too. Besides smoking and his thuggish appearance he acts like a total intellectual as on his free time he either works out, play video games, or practices his hand at either coding or hacking as he's tryna add that skill under his belt too. He isn't much of a people person but when he becomes cool with you he can be a rather nice friend to have as he can be relied on and is considerate of others when performing actions. He doesn't like talking around people he doesn't know that well but if he feels too tense and wants to say something he'll just randomly befriend you and start a conversation. He could be consider a kind person as long as you can stand him complaining about him helping you than you helping yourself. Though if he gets irritated and says he doesn't care he truly doesn't anymore so it's best to not pursue it any further. He just wants to have a good time with whoever's around and people he especially calls friends.     Dion Carrie is a boy born of 2 original earth dwellers looking for a new life on the second earth. He wasn't born until they settled down on Earth 2 though so he only knows of the original earth through stories and the research he's done on it himself. In his young life he was mainly motivated by his father who was an tech engineer and even made Dion's first computer which he then helped and taught Dion how to upgrade it to his liking. His mother was a officer in the army and he doesn't remember a whole lot about her as she was sent to many different stations but she always told him amazing stories and taught him something new. Growing up Dion had originally took an athlete's approach in life as he loved sports and being active and healthy so when he found out he can get paid for it he decided to give it a try. He got rather far too but was soon fell out of sports when he went to a computer software engineering and programming event over the summer that his father signed him up for his sophomore year in High school. In the program he learned quickly and had some friendly competition against the other kids. He excelled though none the less and excelled so much most of the mentors said they learned from him just as much as he learned from then. He then started to pursue a career in the field as he received many scholarships from programs and colleges he entered and strived to be the best in all which got enough to pay off college without having any loans. His last two years of high school though were life-changing as in his junior year when he was looking for money he got into a drug trade and started making as much profit as possible. Though during his spring break of Highschool he stopped because of a close encounter with the police and his father discovering his hustle, his father kept quiet about it and never told his mother which Dion still doesn't know why. His senior year he was being pressured by old teammates and people he knew to join gangs and other cults they were in. He declined of course but that course of action usually led to some type of conflict and he would end up fighting. Though in the last fight he had someone tried to pull a knife and stab Dion to death to which he did get stabbed but not enough to be fatal as he then turned the blade in his opponent and sent the knife into his chest striking his heart. Dion didn't know he killed him until he woke up in the hospital with the police around him and tears in his families eyes and luckily they wrote the action down as self defense and because he was a minor refused to put any charges on him as many witnesses pleaded for his innocence. The crazy last two years of his Highschool life were rather emotionally challenging and thought-provoking as he decided to get his first tattoo which was over his right eyebrow the word "Sonder". After that Dion lived a rather successful life as he finished school all the way and very comfortably lives in his own condo with his dog working for a upcoming social media company that his friend owns and he'll also accept contracts from other companies as long as they pay well and if his job doesn't have anything to do for him at the moment.

    varon was born to first settlers on second earth, which allowed for a comfy upbringing. his parents were the definition of a "power couple" without the love and affection. their relationship seemed to serve as a convenience and benefiting both of them financially. thinking this was what a healthy relationship was like, varon was pressured to marry young by his father.
    
    attending university for cybercrime and security, varon's party life was cut short by an accidental pregnancy to jennifer gale. the pair decided to marry to avoid the judgement of their families despite their relationship revolving around nothing but lust.
    
    now, varon and jennifer have five children and live in a wealthy home on second earth. jennifer decided to quit her job to raise their children while varon is a high-ranking security officer within AIL after the second earth rebellion. varon has rebuilt the security detail from the ground up to ensure another breach is basically impossible.
    
    the pair's marriage seems to emulate that of varon's parents, with varon cheating on his wife with dozens of men and women, having an odd impulse he can't explain. jennifer was seemingly aware but the couple remains wedded which is seemingly for the misguided benefit of their children. overall, varon was able to juggle his infidelities, his marriage and occupation for a long time.
    
    however, varon's unfaithful nature finally bit him in the ass after he got another woman pregnant. he offered to pay for her abortion and silence, yet she refused, choosing to blackmail him once she learnt of his wealth. not one to accept extortion, he called her bluff, which was the wrong move; the scandal fell on the ears of hungry journalists who printed the story.
    
    to avoid backlash, varon was forced to leave his position at AIL. now unemployed, he needed money to continue to support his family's lavish lifestyle which led him to accepting this invitation aboard the ss-azael.

    abandoned at a museum on earth when she was five, reeves was balling her eyes out when she was approached by a young couple. her single mother had decided to run away, leaving everything behind, including her only daughter. fortunately, for her and apparently the young couple who were looking to have a child, adopted reeves. the young couple were space engineers aboard the US space station but were visiting relatives on earth.
    
    a moment of coincidental chance let to reeve's being raised by her two fathers aboard the US space station. growing up was difficult for reeves who was clearly struggling from attachment issues, never leaving her father's sides. eventually, she was able to attend school without crying or throwing tantrums. reeves was soon making friends and had a relatively normal childhood from that point forward.
    
    a keen interest in journalism sprouted in high school after a teacher informed her parents about their daughter's high marks in writing. her parents suggested she joined the school newspaper, which only fostered this interest. she enjoyed writing but to write about something that was based on facts and could foster change? that was a gamechanger. yet, her big ideas were not considered "appropriate" for the school newspaper anymore, wanting to write about corruption, inequality and hot button topics.
    
    instead, she started a blog, which she shared her reportings on numerous topics, some bordering on conspiracy theories with little evidence to account for them. it was merely a hobby, an outlet for reeves to write. her parents saw no harm in it and encouraged her to seek the truth.
    
    at nineteen, her blog, "the headline" had gained traction and had quite a large following who enjoyed reeve's brilliant writing, integrity to the truth and ability to dig up dirt. still, reeve's needed a more stable income and has been working at an IT store which is responsible for fixing personal devices aboard the space station.
    
    bored with her job and wanting to report full-time, she decided it was time to take a risk. one of her connections told her about how the mhs-desdemona had gone dark and how mhc was trying to sweep it under the rug with an outsider crew going to investigate. this was going to be her first big story and with a little forgery work she was able to get a spot aboard the ss-azael as "medical personnel" - plus the money didn't hurt but in the end, the truth came first.

    ethan & rahul reeves (father, forty-two & forty-four): skilled engineers, reeve's fathers are loving and friendly people who are well respected on the US space station. reeve's loves her fathers dearly and would be shattered if anything happened to them. they were a big reason for why she finally broke up with her ex-boyfriend of almost a year. they also have no idea she was planning to board the ss-azael as they would obviously object. per usual, she hasn't thought of the consequences and hopes they will understand when she comes back with a killer story.

  He was born in Canada to a pastor and his wife, the middle child with three brothers and a baby sister. He was encouraged and expected to dabble in masculine activities and wanting to make his parents proud he joined the local hockey team. He met his young wife when he was already one of the best known Defensemen in Eastern Canada. She fell for the simple and kind-hearted man and she became his whole world. The fact her parents hated the idea of her marrying an older man and an Earthling only helped her with that decision.
  
  Bell somewhat adopted to life on Second Earth but never forgot his origins and secretly, deeply missed his family. The birth of his now five year old daughter aided with that longing but when she was barely two their life changed forever. The Second Earth Rebellion. Bell was one of it's victims. He returned to good health but he could never play again. The attack didn't kill him but it broke his spirit. Which eventually led to his divorce, few months prior to SS Azael departure. Cooking was always a passion of his and something he tried to focus on after the incident that ended his career. So when the opportunity arose he took the job.
