Officially, The Worst
The girls took note of Wyatt's rush to get off the boat, and didn't dare stop him as he stomped off to the rear of the crowd in a wordless huff. The two shorter counterparts exchanged wary smiles; they really hoped they hadn't upset him --but they continued up to the gathering crowd. A coil of excitement bounced in Raven's tummy as the deputy headmistress introduced herself and explained the night's events. She was scared, and yet thrilled and clung to Penny's arm in giddiness. While Penny herself was practically dancing on the tips of her toes to get a better view of Professor Hagraven. There was a grin on the redhead's face that threatened to crack her it in half. It was good to see her friend was just as enthusiastic as Raven herself, but she wondered about her newest friend. Slowly her dark eyes scanned the crowd to find Wyatt's towering form in the back, his hood pulled up and around his head. The candlelight from the entrance hall lit up his ashen skin, and she could catch a faint glint of anxiety in his silvery-blush mottled eyes as he glared up at the stairs to the entrance hall.
Penny was about to say something to Raven when she noticed the girl staring not at the professor, but at someone else. She followed her eye line and found Wyatt's formidable form looming over the crowd near the back. He stuck out like a sore thumb despite his hood, and she could already see some of the other children casting curious glances in his direction. The group filed up the stair case, but near the entrance were instructed to pair off. At first the girls looked hopefully at one another, but then suddenly remembered their large friend.
"Go on Raven-- I can pair off with anyone." Penny assured her friend, knowing Raven was also quite shy, and the only other person she'd be comfortable with was Wyatt, and he could sorely use a partner right now, lest he wanted to get an early start on unintentionally intimidating his fellow classmates.
"O-okay, if you're sure---" Raven hesitated but Penny shooed her away and quickly latched onto a boy with dark hair who tossed a surprised look at her but decided not to argue. With that Raven rushed to the towering figure's side, and grasped his wrist again as if to let him know of her presence. He didn't seem all that interested in taking in the surroundings, as much as he was more intent on hiding under his hood. Maybe her presence would help him relax? His grumbling noises became a much less threatening noise to Raven since the last few hours of their interactions, and they became more of an indication of his reluctant acceptance. She let out a small chuckle and tugged him onward. Though the closer they drew to the grand hall the heavier her own steps became. The corridor they enter was lined with countless portraits that moved of their own accord. Several figures in the paintings even turned to acknowledge the line of first years slowly pouring in from the outside.
Children all marveled at the surroundings of the castle's interior. Everything seemed to hold a bit of mystique; from the weathered brick the very building was built from, to the massive ceilings. It was like walking into the past itself. Though the grandest sight awaited them in the Great Hall, where rows of students sat eagerly awaiting the arrivals of the new comers. Candles and decorations adorned the tables, but it was the ceiling of this room alone that stole the entire show. It mirrored the sky outside, and the flying buttresses of the interior where blocked by midnight colored mist that bled to a sheer haze as it cascaded down into the great hall. Twinkling stars could be seen glistening in the faux night sky and as if to accent the presence of the false stars; candles, all alight, lay suspended in the air. Floating languidly above the student body's head. Raven felt her confidence leave her, and now she was clinging to Wyatt's arm out of anxiety. It felt like all eyes were on her, or was it Wyatt they were staring at?
She peered up to see his expression and how he was handling this but could only catch his lips pressed into a thin stony frown. The scar on his face prevented the expression from fully setting in. She wanted to reassure him, but the words escaped her, as she, herself, barely had the words to quell her own fears. Helplessly she stood by as the first years were filed in and the ceremony began.
Another teacher awaited them at a podium that stood before the crowd. This woman was more mature looking then the last, and her accent was pleasant though her eyes where piercing and her gaze authoritative. She welcomed them and explained the Ceremony. It all seemed to make time move slower with the rising anticipation. Raven hadn't really considered which house she'd want to be in, but then again, that was never her choice to begin with. Now a pit of sorrow replaced her excitement as she considered the prospect of being separated from her friends. Penny no doubt would make the effort to remain by Raven's side. But what about Wyatt? Again she glanced over and tried to consider the thoughts running through his head. Was he nervous? Was he angry? Was he annoyed?
Her thoughts dwelt there as names were started to be called. It didn't take long for the name 'Boltset' to come up and there was a noticeable change in the atmosphere as a wave of hush whispers traveled through the hall, and Raven felt her her arm uncoil from his. Even if he wasn't-- she was nervous for him. A part of her wondered what exactly the Boltset's had done to be treated in such a manner of veneration and fear. She watched as he tensely let down his hood, a second wave of awe swept the room, and then finally his tall figure sank into the chair. The hat was placed on his head, and came alive, wiggling this way and that. The folds of it rattled like lips, but she couldn't hear the words it was sharing with the starkly pale boy. Before long, the house name was announced-- "--SLYTHERIN!"
The Slytherin house seemed overjoyed to have him, and Raven applauded along with the reverie. Perhaps he would make some friends of his own, --Raven wouldn't give up on him regardless. There was something about the contrast between his harshness and yet, sometimes gentle demeanor that made her believe he wanted to be friends. Wyatt got up from the seat and hurried over to a seat which was a comfortable distance away from the rejoicing Sytherins. His hood went up again, and Raven couldn't tell if he was upset about the decision or just shy.
More students were called in alphabetical order, and soon enough every table began to fill up with new faces. Raven grew more restless as her name grew closer. She could feel her face warming up and her breath growing heavy. "--Don't panic... Don't panic..." She repeated to herself under her breath. She had such trouble with crowds, and knowing that everyone was going to be staring at her when her name was called made her hot with anxiety. They would be judging her; she could just feel it, and she really didn't want to make a fool of herself in front of the whole school. She was so wrapped up in her own worrying that she didn't even notice that her name had been called three times already.
"Hathaway ---Raven! Ahem... young lady..." The elder woman pinned the girl down with an impatient look and Raven locked dark eyes with her, acknowledging the weight of the professor's gaze before registering that her name had been spoken.
"Oh!" Raven chirped in embarrassment and nearly ran over and stumbled to the chair, then scrambled into the seat. A few giggles and chuckles escaped the crowd as they watched her frantic movements.
"I'm sorry--" Raven whispered to the professor as she placed the hat on Raven's head. The professor, muttered softly. "That's alright, dear-- sit still." and fixed the capped over her dark curls. From this vantage point Raven could see Penny clearly, who was giving her energetic thumbs up and a large encouraging smile that made the girl's pensiveness somewhat melt away.
"Oh--? and what do we have here?" A chilling voice filled her ears, and Raven glanced about as if to locate its origins. "A muggle born... but so much talent." There was a deviousness in the voice that put Raven on edge and she soon realized it was the hat itself speaking. "Ah yes-- You are a smart one... Perhaps Ravenclaw would sharpen that mind of yours.... oh... hmm? No?" The hat asked with a bit of doubt in its voice as if hearing her subconscious arguments. "No--- You are more valiant then that... Your gentleness is not to be taken for weakness--- hmm... you'll do great things if you wield that courage..." Raven fidgets as the hat finally sounded as though it were coming to its conclusion. Her heart began to race, and her cheeks flushed as she tried to predict what it would say. She closed her eyes as the anticipation swallowed her up.
"--GRYFFINDOR!!" The Sorting hat finally roared, and the table draped in burgundy and gold cheered happily like they had done for all its new comers. She was welcomed to the table with pats upon her back and smiling faces, but she was still reeling-- Did she really get into the same house as her aunt? She couldn't believe it. She sat among her new housemates and watched anxiously as the rest were sorted. When Penny's turn came, Raven clapped especially loud and cheered for her when she took the stage. Penny's sorting went amazingly quick as the hat barely glanced her head before spitting out "HUFFLEPUFF!!"
The announcement was met with a wave of laughter and cheering from the yellow and black table as Penny's brothers bounced to their feet and raced over to sweep the girl up and carry her back to their table on their shoulders, as if she had just won a soccer tournament. Raven could already tell Penny was having a ball.
After all the first years were sorted and the crowd of newcomers had disbursed into their new houses, the Headmistress gave a small welcoming speech; promising a fun and productive year ahead, and with a wave of her hand the long tables that sat between each house became filled with plates, bowls, and basins full of steaming food that had appeared from thin air. The scent of warm meals clouded the room thickly, and goblets full of sweet juices and warm beverages sat before each student, inviting them to partake in the grand feast.
