Fandom Octowizard Tournament // plot & chat

Jannah Jannah Good question! I don't have a definite answer for you, but I feel like there just has to be some kind of translation spell already in existence; like, the Wizarding World would be so incomplete without one, you know? If not, then I suppose it would be the chaperoning professor's responsibility to create and distribute some kind of magicked devices to their students that allow them to perceive the local language... or, this translation snag might just be one more "challenge" for the students to overcome independently with their own magical ingenuity.

@irregular-neptune These are good points too... Since support for the masquerade seems to be rapidly draining, I shall drop the idea of it. No poll will be necessary, unless someone else would like to argue otherwise. That leaves the question, should we do just a masked ball or nah?

That's a good point. I suppose there would be a translation spell.

Also, I feel like a masked ball would be more fitting for Halloween.

Okay, here are the boys' randomized dance cards! From reading them the girls' cards can be deduced; I made sure not to list any girl twice for the same dance. Because we have one more female student than male, for each dance one of the girls has to sit out. Unless maybe one of the professors wants to dance with her? Keep in mind that these cards are subject to change if more characters join before the start of the RP!

Lisandro:
  1. Genevieve
  2. Gavy
  3. Dakota
  4. Katia
Kasper:
  1. Freyja
  2. Dakota
  3. Genevieve
  4. Gavy
Caelum:
  1. Katia
  2. Genevieve
  3. Freyja
  4. Dakota
Jae-Hui:
  1. Gavy
  2. Freyja
  3. Katia
  4. Genevieve

We can just pretend the girls are dancing with NPC's while they're not dancing with any of the player characters.

Hey, everyone! While our roster could still be buffed out a little more, I think we have enough charries to start the RP thread soon. My goal is to get that up over next weekend, when my semester will finally be over, thank god. Until then, if anyone has any friends they'd like to invite over here, I would be extremely grateful! Before we get started with the RP, do you guys want to brainstorm some ideas for potential challenges? I think the idea of a series of Wizard's Duels in a bracket-style tournament might be a little too straightforward for a challenge, but how would you guys feel about including them as a part of the Opening Ceremonies? Kinda as a way to showcase all the competitors to the public and represent the various schools before the actual competition starts.

I have exams this coming week too, but fortunately two out of three are open book, thus I don't have to do a huge amount of preparation for them. I know the material quite well anyway.

I think a series of duels could be a fun way to have others in the student body participate as well. They may not be the Champions, but they can still have their time to shine!

Yes, my thoughts exactly! In fact, I was thinking of possibly having the duels bracket before the Goblet of Fire chooses champions from among each school's representatives. How does this sound to y'all?

Howdy, some reason I'm not getting any notifications from here, so annoying. I like the idea of that and would love to brain storm some cool stuff for the proper challenges! Also, Aviator Aviator Gen has been put in for all 4 dances by accident!

artfvlly artfvlly No, Gen's extra appearance was by design; since there's five females but only four dances, all but one of the girls would have to sit out a dance. The random generation gods just happened to choose Gen as the lucky girl to get an extra dance, even though she's probably the last one to appreciate it lol. Of course, if everyone would prefer, I could always make it so that there's five dances, but I was afraid that too many dances might get monotonous?

For potential challenges, let's see... I'll brainstorm a vague list here, and if any of these ideas appeal to you guys, we can explore them a little more in-depth:
- dragon racing
- navigating the muggle world unseen
- curing poison
- fighting a yacumama (a giant serpent; this one would probably take place at Castelobruxo)
- capture-the-flag labyrinth
- storm navigation
- resisting a siren's song
- fortune telling with crystal balls
- game with tarot cards; when each card is played a different magical attack is unleashed
- eight-way wizard's chess... somehow XD

Aviator Aviator Aaah that makes sense!! I wasn't sure if it was a mistake or not lol.

Capture the flag sounds fun and fighting the yacumama! Maybe for the capture the flag one they could even be put into teams between the champions, so the characters that are usually lone wolves are forced to play teams? Or maybe even the teams could be made up of the champion and secondaries, although some schools don't have secondaries so that might be kind of hard.

How would the tarot card one work? Would they be doing a reading, or using them like playing cards? Although, you can use playing cards as tarot cards lol. (Sorry I know far to much about tarot cards, coming from a pagan family gives you random knowledge lol). I just automatically thought of it like Pokemon cards like,, you sent out justice?? jokes on your I have the goddamn sun

Navigating the muggle world unseen also sounds fun! I could see that being held in the USA or UK. My brain sees it as like the amazing race or something where they have to get places and complete mini challenges haha.

Curing poison could be fun if it was like super dramatic somehow... like the person the champion loves the most or is super close with (think like the book/movie trial where they had to save the other students from the lake at Hogwarts) has been given a poison and the champion has the figure it out before time runs out (of course with time for someone with the antidote standing nearby to swoop in if they fail).

Storm navigation I also like the sounds of, but get this, add in the resisting the sirens call too? Fighting through a storm at sea using magic, maybe there's some serpents in the water and some sirens trying to suck you in too? Maybe they have to travel out and get an object and then bring it back to shore?

artfvlly artfvlly Oml all those ideas are excellent, and I couldn't agree more! The tarot cards I was picturing would be used like playing cards, exactly like your Pokemon reference lol; or maybe it could be turned into a hunting game of sorts, like each champion is given a tarot card starting out and is then assigned a specific someone else's card to obtain. Then, assuming they've successfully obtained the next card, they would be able to go after that person's target, and whoever has collected the most cards after a period of time would be the winner. Which method would you prefer?
For capture-the-flag, I'd love to get some of the secondaries in on the action with the formation of teams; hopefully by then in the RP we'll have a somewhat larger cast of characters. I was thinking of sorta switching up your ideas for the muggle world and the curing poison challenges; what if, the end goal to the muggle world scavenger hunt is to rescue a loved one from peril? Maybe the champions don't figure this out until they're already halfway through the challenge, though. And then for the curing poison challenge, I was thinking perhaps this challenge would be almost exclusively for the secondaries, if the champions themselves were all to mysteriously fall under the influence of the poison and were too incapacitated to cure it themselves. I love your combination of the storm navigation and siren's song ideas! And then like you said, maybe the competitors have to retrieve something at the bottom of the sea.

I feel like the purebloods would have a natural disadvantage if navigating the muggle world is one of the challenges.

True, indeed. But isn't the reverse--that Muggle-borns have a natural disadvantage in a magical tournament--just as true?

Not really since blood status doesn't really determine one's skill in magic. Plus they obviously have exposure to the wizarding world. Many purebloods have limited, if any, exposure to the muggle world.

Ooh, for the tarot card ones it could be fun to have it set like a reading where you pick your cards from a shuffled deck, lay them out in the spread and then the champion flips them over revealing it/ unleashing whatever magic is tied to the card. It could be using the major arcana (the fool, the lovers, the moon etc), or the other suites too to make it more complicated (10 of swords, ace of pentacles etc). Although the numbers of that might depend on what spread they might use, if they picked 3 that could mimic the basic 'past, present, future' etc. Maybe there could even be a risky part where you could trade cards with other champions without knowing what you might get? If there were more than the major arcana, maybe some cards could provide defence, help or healing and others summon stuff/are damaging? But the hunting down each other sounds fun too, like maybe it could be run over a week with the secondaries involved and you have to listen to gossip or news to know who has what card - maybe like trying to collect all of the sword cards, or all of the major arcana etc? Idk if either of those made any sense, I can try explain it better if needed lmao.

And yesss champion and secondary teams for capture the flag sounds great! Maybe they could ride brooms during it at some point too... hmmm idk if that would be a disadvantage to some though but I just think of it being at the top of a tower and you have to fly the last stretch? I like the saving someone in peril for the navigating challenge!! I don't know how to prevent any disadvantages though, maybe they're given advice or something in preparation? And OMG the poison one kinda sounds awesome??? Like the idea of the bickering between champion and seconds while they're trying to figure out a cure, might knock down cocky champions a few pegs if they're the ones being saved lol.

I could def see the storm navigation/siren song one being based in Durmstrang, considering the viking heritage and the large part boats/fishing/the sea played in their culture. Plus between trying not to drown/eaten by a siren there would also be the part where they try not to freeze to death lol.

Jannah Jannah From a psychosocial standpoint, I'm inclined to disagree... However, I really appreciate you speaking up, and your thoughts have been noted. If others feel in a similar manner, I'll do away with the idea for the Muggle world challenge.

artfvlly artfvlly Yaaahhs, both those variants of the tarot card challenge sound epic af! I can see both having their merits, so if anyone has a strong preference for either, go ahead and state your case, and I'll let popular opinion decide. Considering the limited number of characters we currently have, I think just the major arcana cards will suffice, but if we recruit more later on, I'd be willing to branch out into the basic four suits... unless these additional cards would be too overwhelming to those who aren't very familiar with tarot? Or, here's another idea! Without any prior instruction as to the meanings of the various tarot cards, each champion must select the three that, when joined together, most closely foretell their winning the challenge. In other words, the champions have to interpret the tarot card meanings on their own in order to construct a "reading" for themselves that prophesies their victory. Does this make sense?
The association between the storm navigation challenge and Durmstrang was a very good insight, one with which I agree. Considering that the tournament starts out at Durmstrang, I think we've just figured out the gist of our first challenge, if everyone else is onboard? get it, because it's a ship?

How did y'all feel about dragon racing as a potential challenge? Or, if that's too straightforward, I'm thinking of adding a second component: the dragon is initially hostile to the champion's approach, and the champion has two choices of how to deal with it. They can either try to soothe the dragon in order to fly it, or if they don't trust the dragon they can fight it and conjure another means of flying, like a broomstick. Yea or nay?

Why is this not updating me when their are new posts! 😭😭😭

But those all sound really cool! I wish I could talk longer but I have to go get ready for work! But I love the idea of the dragon racing!!! It sounds so cool and the idea of needing to smooth a dragon sounds really unique!

Hey hey guys, I'm hoping to have the RP thread up late tonight/early tomorrow morning! Anyway, before I do so, y'all wanna talk about our students' rooming situations? Since most schools don't have secondaries (or if they do, they're opposite gender from the champion), I don't think it would make sense to group students of one school all in one dorm. How about, since there's four male students and five female, the boys are in two groups of two, and the girls are one group of two and one group of three rooming together? That way, if students of different schools share a dorm, the justification would be to promote a better cultural understanding of one another. Does anyone have any preferences for who dorms with whom, or should I randomize it?

I like this and think it should be randomized.

Seems most are in favour of randomizing. I think it's the most fair. Plus it will allow for interactions between characters that wouldn't ordinarily interact.

Random it is... and the dorm assignments are:

Girls' Dorm 1: Freyja; Genevieve; Gavy

Girls' Dorm 2: Dakota; Katia

Boys' Dorm 1: Jae-Hui; Caelum

Boys' Dorm 2: Lisandro; Kasper
