Advice/Help OC x CC doubling?

Quick question for all my OC x CC , Selfshippers, etc out there! I’m one of you, trust, but I was wondering if it’s not acceptable to not want to double up?

Like I’m hoping to find some CC roleplayers out there but I’ve never been good at doubling. It’s difficult to play more than one character for me and I don’t want to make it a bad experience for anyone. Is it considered bad manners to not double? I’m super curious before I put out any interest checks because I want to be aware of what will get me skipped over. I rather save mine and everyone else’s time if so. No

Thank you!! And happy shipping out there!

It's okay to not double, there are people who don't double and are okay playing one CC.

But keep in mind, that if you want someone to play CC for your OC you might have to wait a really long time before you find a person willing to do it. I feel like in some fandoms there are more people willing to play OC but not CC and very few who want to play CC only. So it very much depends on the fandom and the CC character you need.

lol speaking of the very few who want to play cc only-

Hi! Because I tend to highly prefer playing canons over original characters, I‘ll always be alright with not doubling. Although, for me the issue usually lies in trying to find people who would be interested/willing in rping against the canon character I’d want to play as, so it doesn’t always solve the main issue 😅

Both points make total sense, thanks guys! I always felt greedy?? for not wanting to but I’m glad to see others are okay and even agree with not doubling.

I promise to do my best to make some OCs that Canon players would want to happily engage with to make up for it!

I actively prefer not to double as in my experience no one actually wants to play the second character.

Everyone has the character they actually want to write and the one they feel obligated to write to keep things “fair”.

As another person who just prefers the canon character I find it frustrating because it diminishes my character. Like oh I can’t just want to play a canon character because those are an afterthought. Just someone on screen to be the love interest with nothing interesting happening.

Like excuse you I like this character, I happen to be very excited to play them. I don’t appreciate you making it seem like I am doing you some enormous favor that I have to be compensated for when it’s something I already wanted to do.

It leaves a bad taste in my mouth and I usually don’t join the roleplay anyway. Because I would rather write with someone who assumes the character I picked has value than someone who seems them just as an accessory to their own character.

All that said the fact that you thought to ask the question in the first place tells me you value both characters equally. So I think your best bet is to just put a search out for someone to play the canon you want.

It might take some time but it will be worth it to know that both of you are having fun. Rather than one person having fun and the other person just fulfilling an obligation to be nice.

Yeah! Chances are, if I'm asking for a certain character its because I really enjoy who and what they are already. Romance be damned I just want to write against them and see how other people interpret different aspects of them in terms of roleplay.

I think putting the term "OC x CC" makes it seem like I'm only there for the subpar romance part when I'm more about dynamic exploring? Becoming a couple is completely optional. That why doubling is a struggle at times. I feel like its a somewhat rushed for each character to get with the other they picked out and then it kinda goes nowhere. That could be just a me thing but it takes me out of the immersion a ton. Thats what makes me extremely appreciative when someone agrees to my somewhat uncommon terms. It's also tell me that they're already passionate about said canon just like I'm passionate about my OC. It's a win win scenario that doesn't hold as much guilt behind it. (Another weird me opinion)

No I also don’t focus on romance and prefer to just play the canon in AU scenarios. That actually might be a better way to pitch it.

“I’m looking to write an alternate universe version of the story with Canon X.”

It lets the person who your trying to recruit know their character has solid value to the narrative without it being about a specific pairing.

Also I find specifying up front that romance will be a slow burn and that you are fine with a platonic storyline helps as well.

I will definitely be doing that when I start my search! Putting what I'm truly looking for flat out in writing should make it more comfortable for others too which might get me more hits. Wonderful Idea!
