Obsession (Flaw)

I want my Solar to be obsessed with creatures of darkness, combating them and learning about them.  I decided to make a flaw to represent it, and as I have it written on the back of the sheet it reads like this (I ripped off Throwback):

If there are creatures of darkness to fight, or I find some new library or something to learn more about them, I have to roll Willpower (in my case 7) vs. permanant Essence (2) or I have to fight them or I have to study at the cost of food, sleep, even the mission at hand.  As it stands I made it 2 points.

However, I've just had a thought that might work better.  what if, instead, you can take Obsession as a variable point flaw, 1 to 5, and when the object of your obsession comes up, you have to roll Integrity (by itself, or possibly coupled with an Attribute, thoguh I don't know which yet) or roll Willpower (maybe a better idea) with a difficulty equal to the value of Obsession, so if you take it for 3 points, you have to beat a difficulty of 3.

Any thoughts?

I like the latter idea; however, I'd recommend that if X = the points the flaw is taken at, then the Willpower roll be at diff (X+1). Just to reduce potential exploitation.

I like that.  Personally, it makes the most sense to use Willpower for the roll, it represents, after all, the character's willpower, and so makes the most sense.  I do like X+1 for the difficulty, because a starting character is going to have at least 6 dots in Willpower, and if they want to be really, really obsessed with something, than they should have a pretty hard time of it.

The only other problem with the flaw, so far as I can tell, is defining it.  Could leave it to the ST, and in my case that means the group as the four of us have made Solars to play a round robin type game, but I think that the flaw should be more defined before I submit it to Lore5 or anything.

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  And thanks to Silence in Daylight.

I like SiDs suggestion too but I want to point out that conviction is the trait I'd use as it is described as the solars will to hold to his mission.

Thematically, I like Conviction (and even potentially Temperance), but mechanically, being less able to resist one's Obsession after expending mucho Willpower...in case I wasn't clear, my suggestion for the Obsession is with temporary Willpower.

Ah that's even cooler then.

I'm with Safim, temporary Willpower could work even better than permanant Willpower.  I think I should go with that.

As to better defining the flaw, I guess something along the lines of the character simply having to pursue the obsession for some period of time makes sense.  I don't want it to get to complicated though, so I imagine something like a scene might do, where, should the character fail the roll to resist the obession, he simply has to focus on it for the rest of the scene (or the next scene I guess, if the trigger happened along at the end of a scene, it's up to the ST really), then returns to normal afterwards.

You came up with a homebrew flaw and didsn't ask me about it?  *sob*

Everybody here has given you good advice on it.  I think it's good to go for Saturday.

I'd suggest a final temp. Willpower roll at normal difficulty to break out of it at the end of the scene, with the option to expend a WP should the character fail the roll.

I'd thought about that, although I was thinking the Obsession would "wear off" at the end of the scene as it were, but allowing the character to burn a Willpower to resist the obsession, not unlike a Virtue.  No Limit though, as that would be a bit much for a flaw methinks.

I posted it on The Golden Wings, but nobody seems to read that anymore. :(

Submit it to Lore5--it's set up for Merits/Flaws' date=' right?[/quote']
Doesn't look like there are any merits or flaws yet.  And for the life of me, I still can't remember how to submit to Lore5, because I have an artifact or two that I'd like to submit as well.

Umm, Stillborn, little help here?

Merits and Flaws go in the Articles section. What's to not know about submitting something? Click the "Submit" link.

I don't know if you remember, but back in the day, I couldn't get a submit link no matter what I did.  Same problem again, there's no link to actually submit things.  I've been told that logging out and selecting Remember Me will fix it, but I've already got that selected and no such luck.

So if, in lore5, you click on "Submissions" in the sidebar, and then click "Articles", you don't see a link at the top which says "Submit a new Article"?

Please confirm this, and if not, notify memesis.
