Bella shuddered and folded in on herself, not from the cold, but from the wounds it reopened and the memories it brought to the surface- Edward. She allowed herself this moment to speak his name in her mind only, to feel the consequential warmth and coldness that came with it; it had been almost two years since Edward had left, taking with him everything but what she could remember.

Almost two years of pain, nightmares, and sadness. Only just recently had she started to feel- something other than numb, that is. But that was good- it meant she was healing… slowly. The pain that once consumed her entire being now burned slowly beneath the surface. To anyone else, she would seem perfectly at ease… cheerful even. The average college student… a bit antisocial, but average nonetheless.

She sighed audibly once she reached her destination- the Espresso Express. It was not a long journey- the café was just across the street from her dorm, and only then some- but in the frigid winds of Alaska even the shortest journey can seem like a lifetime. She could see the fire crackling merrily through the windows and was immediately engulfed by its warmth and the inviting smell of coffee and syrups when she walked through the door.

The café was small, cozy, and warmly decorated in shades of gold and brown, with pops of green in knick-knacks and plants. The fire brought light and warmth to the large room; two walls lined with bookcases, students lounged, socialized, and studied among the many sofas, armchairs, and beanbags that surrounded the area, sipping their favorite hot beverages.

“Your usual, Bella…” the handsome bartender greeted her as usual with his most charming smile, his voice hopeful that perhaps this time, she would return his flirtations with more than just polite friendliness, as he held out a latte in a mug that was big enough to be a bowl. It was still steaming, the ceramic edges hot when he handed it to her, just the way she liked it.

“Thanks, Joe!” she replied gratefully, completely oblivious to his advances as she handed him the money and placing a few ones in his tip jar before heading towards her favorite armchair by the fire. In classic Bella fashion however, the large hood to her parka slipped over her eyes, obscuring her vision.

She felt herself lurch forward and bump into someone, the coffee falling hard from her grasp, the mug cracking and its contents spilling everywhere. Her cheeks burning with embarrassment, Bella grabbed the shattered pieces and straightened up, placing them on the nearby table as she sputtered her apologies.

“I’m so sorry, are you o-?” Bella gushed, removing her soaked, jacket before meeting the strangers beautiful golden gaze and stopping dead in her tracks. A tidal wave of buried emotions rose to surface and threatened to crush her- fear, anger, sadness, crippling depression- all the things she thought she had carefully hidden suddenly broke the locks and sprung free.

After all, it wasn’t a stranger before her. It was Jasper Hale. And if he were here, then surely the others would be too..

“You’ve been avoiding me, Alice…” Jasper’s calm, low voice seeping with confusion and desperation- Alice could feel Jasper’s sadness coming off of him in waves, unintentionally projecting on her.

If she could feel it, surely the others could too…

“Won’t you please tell me what is bothering you?” He plead.

“Jasper…” Her voice was like a warm blanket, comforting and inviting, yet tinted from a small hint of melancholy. “Jasper… I think we both know what is happening… you don’t need the future to know what is coming. And we don’t need your projections to know that we are drifting apart…You know why. I know you do…”

Jasper’s response came out in the form of a low drawn-out sigh- just as strongly as she had previously felt his emotions, there was… nothing… just a spiraling abyss that seemed to bloom from his chest and into her own. She could feel her own pain beneath his- Jasper was her old and dearest friend, she truly did love him… just not the way that he deserved. Surely he was feeling it too.

“You’ve already made up your mind…” he said quietly. “You’re leaving…”

“I’ve seen him, Jasper… my true mate.” Alice said softly, gasping as she felt the pain that her words had inflicted on him. “But there’s more- you will meet your mate soon too…

“I don’t want her…” he said scathingly, looking very much like a petulant child as he turned away from her, scowling. “I want you. Alice, I love you.”

“I know, Jasper. And I love you- but we are not mated…” Alice tried her best to sound comforting, hopeful even. “I know its hard to understand now, but we’re going to be happy. I’ve seen it…”

“Alice… honey?” Esme’s sweet, concerned voice broke through Alice’s silent reverie and at last she opened her eyes. Esme stood there, her eyes filled with motherly worry for her adopted vampire daughter.

“Was it a vision? Are you ok?” Esme asked.

“No,” Alice replied, shaking her head sadly. “Just thinking. I miss Jasper… I worry he’ll never forgive me.”

“Aw, come on, sis.” Emmett leaped across the room at vampire speed and grinned at her encouragingly. “You’ve never been wrong before, and you said yourself that all ends well.”

“You’re right,” she replied with a small smile. “Maybe I just need some exercise. I think I’ll go for a run.”

At lightening speed, Alice dressed in her thick insulated coat and snow boots-all just an illusion, of course, should she run into a human. And then she was off, running as fast as her vampire speed would allow. To the human eye she would be nothing more than a blur.

She pushed onward and the longer she ran the better she began to feel- the air – cold to a human- felt perfectly splendid to Alice. The harsh winds more akin to a warm breeze as it caressed her lovely face and ruffled her silky ebony hair. She turned her face upwards, enjoying the warmth of the sun, hidden by the thick expanse of gray clouds.

She suddenly stopped as a new scent caught her attention. Someone was nearby-someone new. She had not yet come across this scent.

Curiosity peaked, she followed the trail- whoever it was smelled wonderful, although not the traditional I want to eat you sense. The further she got the less it felt like she were tracking and more like she was being pulled. She could feel her precog prickling and knew before the vision even hit her that it was her mate…

Jasper sighed before he blinked as he felt a bump before he heard a familiar voice before her scent hit his nose. He blinked again, trying to reassure himself that his vision wasn't playing tricks on him. Indeed, it was an older and a bit more mature countenance, but it was still her.

"Bella," he murmured in surprise, shaken out of his distraction as he'd been feeling something... strange... to the south and slightly to the west. It was a strange feeling he couldn't describe. He'd also heard about Charlie Swan's passing a few months after he'd guessed that Bella would have graduated.

Unknown to him, the strange feeling that he'd been sensing... was what Alice was heading straight towards. He exhaled softly, though he was well aware he technically didn't really need to breathe although the illusion of doing so did surprising wonders for blending in. They lived roughly a hundred and fifty miles to the northeast, far from where most humans went, even the so-called 'bush people' which made keeping hidden far easier.

In the industrial district of Anchorage, Alaska, a hooded figure squatted, his head slowly scanning around despite the cold rain pelting down. His glowing sapphire-amethyst irises flicked to one well dressed man before his eyes narrowed as his irises dulled to what, to the naked eye, seemed to be a blind icy bluish white.

To his eyes, however, of the nine people crowded around the man, only two lacked the malevolent reddish purple miasma his senses picked up. And of the others, other than the well dressed man, only two had miasma auras of similar strength. "Hmmm... the target is low B-rank... two others mid-C, there are two clean... likely intended for food. The others are fodder, Hayate," he relayed before his fingers drifted to the twin blades crossed, hilts down but held closed to the sheaths by platinum and silver braided wires cinched shut by bronze and ruby magatama beads.

To those in the know, there were some tells that hinted that he was more than he appeared. The magatama were one, as well as the fact he could move accurately upon a half inch diameter wire in fairly heavy rainfall despite the fact that he was roughly four stories off the ground and unbothered by the fact whatsoever.

His head tilted as he pushed off, vaulting smoothly from the edge of a rooftop just over three stories high to the top of a power pole with little effort or slowing. He swiftly darted along the power lines before vaulting off as he saw the eleven person group entering alleyways not far from a storefront which was dark for the night. He just heard the soft footfalls as his companion joined him. "Support whilst you clear them out?" Hayate murmured teasingly.

A slight smirk crosses the face of Yāomò Uzumaki. He shrugged lightly as he heard Hayate pull free his bow before he ffired off two arrows. True, the sleeping herbs contained in the smoke would have next to no effect upon the Fiends... but they weren't the targets. The human women slumped to the ground, sound asleep even as they were retrieved with inhuman speed and hidden in a nearby building out of the rain, deeply asleep. Most likely, they would recall whatever meal they had at the upscale restaurant they'd left, but memories after would be blurred, which generally were attributed to alcohol consumption rather than anything unnatural or supernatural.

"Drop them. They knew what making their Deals would result in," he muttered gruffly, referring to the cannon fodder. Though becoming a Fiend did afford power beyond what 98.4998% of humanity had... in truth, it led to two results: eternal slavery and the loss of one's humanity. That, Yāomò knew, was a Deal he'd never take.

Unfortunately, he knew another critical fact... that these Fiends were far from the only ones in Alaska or the US as a whole.
