History:

Born in the city of Thorns and descended from a Marukani grandmother, the first sixteen years of Kessa’s life were spent tending the horses at the stables of the cheap inn where she and her large family lived and work, supplementing her meagre income by pilfering small objects and picking pockets in the marketplace and dodging the blows of her father when he was drunk. On the day that Thorns fell, she was outside of the city with two of her sisters working temporarily for a horse-trainer; mounted on the old nags that were their payment, the girls turned and tried to flee. They were caught by zombies and war ghosts that consumed the lives of Kessa’s sisters before she suddenly Exalted, flowing away from their attacks. But that wasn’t enough to save her from joining her sisters in death; it took a Solar of the Zenith Caste named Rowan to frighten away the undead with his anima and burn the corpses of the other girls to save them from being created as zombies. He physically dragged her onto his packhorse and galloped away as fast as he could into the coming dawn.

Eventually, the duo reached Nexus, where Rowan attempted to use his abilities as a healer to bring the shocked young Night Caste back into the world. When she had regained a bit of balance, he booked them passage in a Guild caravan that was travelling to Great Forks, Sijan, Rubylak and Chanta and back again. During that long trip, Kessa eventually returned to herself and became a hardened traveller with extraordinary skills in handling beasts of all kinds and living off the land, fluent in two languages besides her native Riverspeak and able to hold her own with melee or ranged weapons against most common opponents. She had gained the basics of metal-smithing, making things like horse-shoes, and had learnt much about working a crowd for profit by entertainment and business. By the time they returned to Nexus, her grief had subsided, though it still cast a shadow over her life.

Personality

Kessa is a quiet woman with the shadow of grief and sorrow making her sombre and reticent even when she smiles. She is very compassionate and basically decent, though she has no problems with helping herself to the goods of the rich and careless. Despite her honest labour, she keeps her hand in with obnoxious and wealthy customers, and is a capable covert operator who is not afraid to fight when necessary.

Appearance

Kessa is a slim woman of medium height with chin-length straight blonde hair that lacks body, sun-browned skin and large brown eyes that are sad beyond her youthful years. She wears plain, serviceable clothing that is both well-worn and well-mended, usually consisting of a loose linen or cotton shirt, snug leather vest that doubles as a bodice, a split-skirt made from heavy canvas or wool or snug leather leggings, and knee-high laced leather boots; an ankle-length canvas waterproof jacket and woollen pullover cap in the Western style or an oiled canvas poncho is added during winter. Her anima, when fully realised, is a rearing horse.

NB: Kessa was made for a high-powered game.

I have no idea why this woman was Exalted as a Solar. Tons of people get attacked by zombies; what makes her any different? Why would Sol Invictus take time out of his busy day to give her a measure of his power?

Indeed. Not only that, but running away, not even trying to fend them off. What makes her any different from many other new made corpses? Also...why is she sterile? Is there any reason, outside of a source of bonus points? I at least find it more interesting to tie flaws to the character in some way, or make it part of their story. Admittedly it could have been due to an overdose of Maiden Tea, an injury from the fight where she Exalted, a birth defect, any number of things...but what caused it, or why is it important?

Kessa was sterilised because of the war ghosts' touch; she was Exalted because she was an exceptional rider, even if running away. In later stories, it was discovered that the Zenith Rowan's mother was a Sidereal who used the Theft of Memory spell to remove the memory, because it had essentially broken her mind.

I'm in the process of updating this PC as a Zenith Caste who Exalted three or four years later.

I don't mean to nit-pick.  But usually, something heroic such as standing your ground against hundreds (or thousands) of zombies, or bravely sacrificing yourself so someone else can be saved, are what generally earn TUC's approval.  Of course, then upon Exalting, the new Exalt usually immeadiately butchers the whole lot of adversaries...
