The Dragon and the Phoenix
Stepping onto the scarf that Yong Yut indicated, Meirin made herself comfortable in the soft areas of the fabric, not seeming to mind the spikes or the fact that she was resting in the hold of the Phoenix’s potential. “Cavecraft, hm?”
Isaiah’s illusionary voice sounded in her ear and Meirin nodded while searching for the game online. Seven Amestriyen wasn’t much at all. Still, Meirin didn’t like wasting money on a game she wasn’t sure she would like (she came from a poor background), so she browsed through the rules and reviews first. Key word, of course, was browsed. After a minute or two of reading, the tiny Dragon thought ‘what the heck’ and hit the purchase button.
Humming as the game downloaded itself on her phone, Meirin frowned when a certain disturbance drew her attention. The pink-haired, Oni-like woman that Yong Yut waved over excused herself to join the fray. Under normal circumstances, Meirin would’ve grown larger to physically stop the fight. A giant’s stomp was all it took to shake things up and quell the rowdy fighters; Fear kept people in line where they otherwise wouldn’t be and idiots that only knew violence only responded to violence. Meirin’s experience in dealing with troublemakers that disturbed the peace of the East District told her that civilians and gangsters were all the same in that regard.
However, she could see that Kanna had already stepped in. And Isaiah. And the Dragon-hating ‘Hellie’. Therefore, she didn’t feel the need to step in unless the fighting Dragons disobeyed their leaders (Isaiah and Kanna) or the fighting Phoenixes continued their assault, irregardless of the Phoenixes trying to stop them. It was nice to see that there were people in the Phoenix gang who didn’t desire conflict. Or, at the very least, saw the benefit of order.
Meirin was a fighter. She enjoyed physical competitions and fighting as much as the next martial artist, but only within a contained environment where rules were present. Hurting those not involved. Taking things too far. Those were the things that turned the sport she loved into heinous acts that left her with nothing but regret. Fighting had a time and place. Meirin didn’t know the reason that the scuffle started, and she was more willing to give the benefit of the doubt to her fellow Dragon gang members, but she wouldn’t deny it was inappropriate for the current situation either.
Glancing curiously at the cloth-manipulator who remained where she was despite everything going on, Merin tilted her head. “You aren’t going to join them? They’re your family, aren’t they?”
Either the ones fighting or the ones trying to stop the fight.
Meirin didn’t know much about the deep infrastructure of the Phoenix gang, but from what she’d seen, they treated each other like “family”. Hit one and you hit the pack. That was one of the reasons Meirin had a higher opinion of the Scarlet Phoenixes of the South as compared to the Tigers of the West or the Serpents of the North and one of the reasons they were so dangerous. Truth be told, the brothel owner would sooner trust a member of the mercenary gang than a cop. They were a rowdy and brutish bunch. They killed. But, having fought some in combat, they exuded a sense of honor and honesty through their fists as well.
More so than most cops she’d encountered at any rate.
Then again, as with any organization, there were good eggs and bad eggs. Gossiping with brothel workers, Meirin heard all sorts of stories about those who visit Eternal Night Palace or any of the other pleasure houses scattered in the East District. People would always be people regardless of their profession. Seeing that the game had finished downloading, Meirin launched the app even as she continued to speak to Yong Yut. “Are you afraid?”
