"The sky is a cruel lover. She blinds you. She chills you. She presents an open and defenseless environment where you cannot hide from those who hunt you... But it is the true Ace who can love the world she provides and embrace her cruelty with open arms, though this often means becoming just as cruel in the process."
"Soon I will ascend to the heavens and become what I have dreamed of for so long. My fear of heights will soon be extinguished, and I will become an Ace Pilot and make my family proud. Daisuke may be the favorite son, but he will not deny me my place in the skies!"
Date: November 1, 2015
Location: Areino Base, Osea
The blue cloudless sky above kissed the land with a cold breeze to compliment and contrast the warmth of the sun upon the land. Birds sang in the trees. Squirrels bickered and chattered over territory. And the sound of airplane engines filled the air. Overhead, splitting the heavens, were the racing forms of some of Osea's top Ace Pilots performing a ceremonial flight above Areino Base. It was in commemoration of a very special event that was taking place below at that very moment.
For several months, the students prepared for graduation. Their long hours of training and studying every day were finally paying off, and they were at last going to be recognized as true pilots of Osea. The students were gathered en masse, sporting their Osean Air Force uniform and standing in several dozen rows in front of both Hangars B and C which were currently shut down for the graduation. On a podium before the students was a microphone, but nobody there to speak yet.
All that happened in this moment was the ceremonial flight by Osea's top Ace Pilots led my Osea's own pride and joy, Ace of Aces pilot James "Dean" Morrison in his personal F-22 Raptor with the Dragon Squadron paint scheme (a wicked black body with a special reddish gloss which shone bright red under the correct lighting conditions and when seen at the correct angle).
As the pilots concluded their flight and began to depart, an elderly man stepped up to the podium. He was dressed finely in military dress with dozens of medals and insignias across his chest. This was Chief Master Sergeant Kenneth Lent, a veteran of innumerable flights and missions and a well respected (though retired) Ace pilot in his own right. He stepped up to the podium, and cleared his throat.
"Today, we recognize the achievements of exactly 264 young men and women. Men and women who have studied, trained, exhausted themselves, battered, broke, and bled themselves for the right to bear this nation's colors and insignia. Men and women who persevered time and again through the most rigorous and intensive air force program in the world to join our illustrious ranks. On behalf of Osea I personally welcome you, men and women of the 109th Osean Air Force Graduation Class of 2015, to the Osean Air Force!" He said with vigor and a salute.
Within the ranks stood a young woman with long dark hair currently tied in a bun beneath her cap. She, along with all of her fellow new pilots, saluted the Chief Master Sergeant and chanted "Thank you, sir!" in return to his welcome.
He stepped down, and was replaced by Admiral William Berdholt of the Osean Navy.
"On behalf of all Osean Naval Forces and crewmen, I welcome you, young pilots, to the Osean Air Force! Know that your brothers and sisters of the sea will be relying on your protection in battle should the need arise. In return for your bravery and steadfast devotion to protecting the lives of your countrymen, the favor will be returned in full from the deepest depths of the sea to the upper layers of the stratosphere!" He said with a salute.
Again, the young woman and the rest of her companions saluted in response as the Admiral was replaced by General Aaron Cerus.
"Brave pilots of the air, on behalf of the Osean Marine Corps., I welcome you to our family! You can rely on only the best of intelligence and information from the ground to give you pinpoint precision be it for lining up a single missile or a full force bombing run. We, the Osean Marines, pledge to you our full support from now until death!" He declared with a salute.
And again, all saluted in return as the man was replaced by a woman. Her name was General Kahlen Erissa.
"Brave warriors of the sky, on behalf of the Osean Armed Forces, I welcome you to this family. As with the Naval Forces, we will rely on your support and protection to reach our goals should the time come. In return, as promised by the Marine Corps, you can count on reliable information and intelligence gathering from the Armed Forces. May we all be victorious in battle, and return home as a family to celebrate!" She said with a salute.
And one last time, all saluted in turn.
Chief Master Sergeant resumed his position on the podium, addressing the eagerly waiting crowd of graduates.
Everyone, may the sky be your constant companion, ally, and protector in battle. May she see you safely off the ground to assist your brethren throughout all of the Osean Military. And may she see you safely home be it in victory or defeat. Pilots of Osea... Dismissed!!" He yelled.
The entire crowd, the young woman included, cheered wildly as the ceremony was concluded. And now that they were dismissed to prepare themselves in their quarters for their new lives as pilots, some took off while others remained to talk about how good it felt to graduate and become a fully fledged pilot.
The young woman, Second Lieutenant Kasumi Okabe, removed her hat and let her hair down as she exhaled a deep breath of relief. It had not been a very long day. In fact the day was only half over. No. What exhausted her was the early rise and the endless standing at attention. She was used to getting up early, but the standing? She wasn't so good at that. She wanted to move. She needed to move. But it was not to be today. Still, she pushed through and now she was a true Air Force pilot of Osea.
The day could not get any better in her eyes.
