The year is 2023. It has been almost three months since the plague began, threatening global life as it rears its sneering, putrid face across the globe. Africa has already fallen, South and Central America has become victim to political volatility and the society of Asia is on the brink of collapse. Australia almost immediately closed its doors when the virus became too widespread to contain, and despite North America suffering casualties, Canada and most of the United States northward of Alabama has remained controlled, if unstable.
It began in the Autumn of 2023. Actually, it started much earlier than that but the public began to hear and it became unclassified sometime in that timeframe. In North Carolina, the disease was viewed similarly to Ebola. Despite its lethality, it could hardly reach the US. And even if it did, clearly our medicines and treatments could eradicate it, right?
It started in Argentina. It was slow and subtle at first, only betraying bronchitis-like symptoms such as coughing and fatigue, maybe a bit of diarrhea. By the time the symptoms became severe, almost three thousand had been infected. They were immediately hospitalized and most doctors treated it as some sort of spontaneous cancer. It was baffling, but they had no better conclusions.
By the time the subjects became cannibalistic and deranged, half of a hundred thousand were infected. For a week or so, we were uncommunicative about this revelation. Within days cases began to source over in Africa, and it was a bloody disaster. It had reached the international news by now and yet only figures such as twenty or thirty thousand reached us in NC. The disease had some trouble fighting through Mexican for the greater part of a month, but by that time a tenth of Africa's and South America's population was considered 'deceased' according to some deep-web sites.
Australia had apparently taken great concern over this matter and temporarily suspended all incoming flights. The North American population was concerned and confounded over the issue, until cases popped up in Texas. This was the first real taste of the disease and nobody could stop the news from circulating. Everybody freaked out and dozens of thousands of people book flights to various countries, but were mortified to find out almost every route was denied. This was the time when riots began to appear, at the precipice of Summer. The plague was temporarily halted in Texas and New Mexico, and everybody's eyes and ears turned towards the outside.
Africa was ravaged by now, half of all native Africans dead and another fourth infected. The majority of South America was in anarchy, but certain countries such as Chile held strong despite incalculable fear and disastrous damage. The last official flight to or from Australia was a month ago by now but they were presumed to be safe, more or less. Asia was being eaten up and China along India had suffered an almost fifty percent death toll yet still somehow trudged on. Outside of them, most Asian countries were scared witless but almost unscathed. Europe was the only continent with their shit actually together with less than a zero-point-zero-zero-zero-three percent infection rate and somewhat steady business. It was a little over two months by now.
Today marks the 80th day since the first reported case of what has been dubbed 'Necrotis Regenum', the day that the president of the United States, George D. Hemschfeld, has officially declared martial law. Now all citizens have a mandatory meetup at their city hall, for what nobody knows.
God be with us
For a recap, everybody starts in North Carolina. Preferably in the city of Charlotte, but we'll all meet up eventually. Currently, everybody has been officially appointed at the city hall of Charlotte within the next ninety-six hours. Beyond that time, everybody will be on a shoot-on-sight protocol unless they've registered with the city hall.
