Looking for Music Recs

qunqun

Give me your herbs, worm.
I'm bored and want music recommendations. Send me a link or a DM, I don't mind either way. Preferably give me a song title and the musician. I would like to describe my music tastes, but to be completely honest it's best described as "yes." It should also be noted that I personally play percussion/piano so I do enjoy a good bass/rhythm.

The more obscure, the better.

Want an obscure artist I’m into for some reason? Venetian Snares has some wacky music.

This is my favorite album right now. I hope you like it!

CLANN - Seelie
And so my review:

1. Caves

That was absolutely gorgeous. I don't know what I was expecting, but I wasn't expecting that. It seems like it really sets the tone of what's about to come. A really haunting instrumental track - I generally prefer more uptempo music but I think this is pretty good atmosphere music

2. Once Again

Okay so it seems like this is going to be a softer haunting vibe for the album - something about that mid section made me think of a waltz, though it might be all of the violin and the piano in there. If these are actual instruments being played then damn that was a good violin solo.

3. The Faerie Court (Under Sun)

More uptempo. It's definitely atmospheric music. It's very funky, I'm thinking about actually recommending this to a friend. He really likes this type of stuff. Real nice beat. I'm starting to see that the style usually involves violins. That voice is really well implemented as well - it's very haunting.

4. Dark Angel

Funky intro. Good intro. Good good intro. The vocals are different from the other ones, which is really interesting. I'm having mixed feelings on it. But I think this might be overall issues

5. Hosts of the Air

Okay there was an instrumental part that didn't have any of the vocals, and I'll be honest I liked that small part of the song way more than the others. I think that it would've been better without them - in this case, at least, I don't think it fit very well.

6. Closer

I really liked the instrumentals. That violin highkey is carrying the entire thing. I think it's because I'm listening to these back to back, but it was a really nice break from the vocals... I'll be honest I think the vocals are the weakest part of this entire experience. When they work, they work, but when they're done a bit awkwardly, it shows quite a bit.

7. The Stolen Child

I'm kind of obsessed with this intro. It sounds really pretty. By far one of the highlights for this album has been the string solos, and I quite liked the fact that they really showed it off here. I was a bit disappointed when the vocals and the piano came back in. It was very hauntingly beautiful with all that empty space, I wanted to hear more of that.

8. The Faerie Court (Under the Moon)

I liked the switch up in the voices here - I thought that the . I wish that they leaned into the more ethereal sides of things a bit more. Maybe changing the instrumentals in the drums? But I understand that this is supposed to be a fusion which would undercut that.

9. Unseelie

Title track. I wanted to hear more cello and less choir. Though, that is more of a personal preference than anything. I'm a bit of a slut for cello. Outside of this, I didn't really have many thoughts for the song other than the vocal solo in the middle which I thought was pretty alright. They really threw everything that they had into this track, and I think that's really interesting because this was the track that helped me solidify my opinions on it all.

10. I Hold You

This is the song where I think the drum machine and the overall instrumentation is blended the best. The various parts of what makes this album this album were done really well here. It transitions smoothly throughout the song into its various pieces. I liked this song.

Overall thoughts:
I think this album really shines when the strings are really allowed to flex and it's just instruments. It's very atmospheric and haunting, with enough of a modern touch to get people interested in this music. The voices can get a bit grating after a while, and I think that the operatic style they've chosen to sing in clashes just a little bit too much with the more modern drum/bass machine being used. As myself, I'm not actually the biggest "atmosphere" music, nor am I a big fan of ballads, but I can see how someone would like it if that's the kind of thing that they're interested in.

Pretty good, not personally my style, but pretty good!

My bad. Here’s a fun one:

1. Gentleman

I think the rap was the best part of this song tbh. I really like the beats of this. I don't really get to listen to a lot of complex rhythms, and it was a nice return to form. I'm assuming that this album is going to be breakcore focused with splashes of rap thrown in.

2. Koonut-Kaliffee

Again, that drum machine goes crazy. I could listen to an entire album of those rhythms. Back when I played for real I think I would've wanted to learn how to drum these.

3. Sajtban

I liked the intro part of it, and I still like all the complex rhythms going on, but I think they could've chosen some different samples, to be complete frank. It makes the entire sound not very coherent as a whole... Which I suppose might be the entire point of the song.

4. Kyokushin

There was a part in this where it was just a synth and a drum machine and I think so far that was the best part of the entire album. I think it blended the best out of everything that I've heard so far.

5. Eurocore MVP

This song is disappointing to me. In the intro, I got very excited that I was going to be listening to Reggae-Breakcore only for it to return to the same as before. Though, there was a return of the rap samples. The reggae and the rap samples are what save the song for me, personally. And I wanted more of it because I thought it was a really interesting addition. They should've leaned heavier into it.

6. Poo Yourself Jason

There was a part of this where it was just synth and drum machine that was very well done. I would've loved to do that part live when I could actually perform. It seems that if you actually had to perform the synth parts live and the drumming part live, that would've been absolutely crazy to do.

7. Circle Pit

I thought the lead in to the heavy drum machine and samples was done better than they'd been done in the other tracks. I started being able to coherently pull together my opinion on the album as a whole while listening to this song.

8. Flashforward

I thought that this one blended into the others just a little bit too much. I didn't hear anything that made it stand out from the others... Though, I suppose every album has one of those songs where it just doesn't really stand out that much. It just sounds vaguely similar to all those from before. Though, it's noted that there weren't as many samples.

9. Bebikukorica Nigiri

I liked this song. The coherency was very strong in this song. It was still busy, but it seemed to actually have parts to it. And the counterpoint synths actually sounded really good. It seemed to match the rhythms of the drum machine which were good. I think it was a lot better than the others.

10. Miss Batalon

So the ambient music at the intro was interesting and a welcome break from the intensity of the music from before. I'm uncertain as to why that song is 9 minutes though, when it felt like a lot of different ideas thrown in together with very little coherency.

Overall Thoughts:
The starts of these songs are very strong, I think there's a very big problem though in drowning the music in samples that made for very little coherency. I have listened to music in this style that I thought did this much better. I really liked the rhythms that they'd do in this album though. The flairs of other musical styles like Reggae were welcome reliefs to the oppressively busy parts and the couple of rap samples they threw in were also decent. By far, my favorite of this entire album was track 9 because it felt the most musically coherent and there was something I was supposed to actually be following along to.

For you my boo <3
It's jazz-inspired and I'm obsessed with her right now.

Valentine - Laufey
I really liked this song. I went through a phase in high school where I got really into like... old French music. And this reminded me a lot of it. Very nostalgic, and very soft. I'm adding this to my liked playlist.

here's a song i really love!

beyond the rainy night - lamp

here's a video with the translated lyrics as well.
You gave me translated lyrics and I was still surprised that this was in Japanese so maybe I'm the idiot?

I liked this one as well. It was also very mild and very pleasant. It gives beach driving music - I think it was something about the backing instruments? Also the guitar filter just gave "pleasant sunny day driving down the coast" vibes

I really enjoyed your review! It was in-depth and informative and so much more than “Cool music, thanks.” I think I’m going to go back and listen again while I reread your notes. ☺️

Okay I have two songs that obsessed it lately! I’d send a playlist of all of my fav songs but, that’d be waaaaay too long lol.

Tobe Nwigwe | Eat

Nao | Bad Blood
1. Eat

This made me smile. Everyone seems to be having a really good time in this and it was really nice to see. Usually you don’t see artists having a good time with their work unless it’s on stage. It has a kind of infectious joy and energy to it. Also, I thought the design of the MV was very good.

2. Bad Blood

I am personally a bit of a slut for acapella so that outro was so good. This song is much more mellow, but it also has this bounce to it. Also the little runs that the woman would do with her voice were very good and very well implemented

Honestly, every single song by 'La Union'. They might be all in Spanish, but they're all amazing. My favourite, and top recommendation is 'Lobo-Hombre En Paris' (Wolf-man in Paris). Don't ask any questions. Just. Listen.

1. Runaway

So I'm going to make a couple of odd comparisons but stick with me here. The instrumentation makes me think of Cigarettes After Sex with all those soft dream like guitars and the reverb though with a bit more of a rock edge where Cigarettes is mostly pop. But the singing style makes me think of Band of Horses? It's a very interesting blend

2. All Fired Up

I thought that the stripped down style and piano matched the vocal style a lot more. I'm not the biggest fan of ballads, personally. But I thought this was a decent ballad. A part of me wishes for a little bit more grit, if that makes sense. But the piano was very pretty.

3. Smoko

The video was very funny to me. Something about the guy's sunglasses and the way he said "smoko" made me smile. The bass was going crazy the entire song. I don't really know much about actual Australian culture, but from my perspective this could be the most Australian song I've ever heard...

Also I had to look up smoko so I could understand what the fuck he was talking about

4. Particles

I thought that this song was also very pretty. One of my likes in songs is international songs that aren't afraid to have their accents in their music. Again, ballads aren't necessarily my thing. But I know when songs are pretty. This was pretty.

5. Near Light

Again, beautiful instrumentation. I'll be honest, I went through the entire song thinking vocals were going to be a part of this, but no. It's just a really mellow, really pleasant instrumental song. I liked this. It was good.

Listen in this order:
1. Short change hero
2. Free bird by Lynyrd Skynyrd
3. Around the world by Daft Punk

Now this is important

4.

1. Short Change Hero

I liked this. Had a Western feel all the way through. Had a good beat as well. I think that I wished for a bit more substance, but it was a fine song.

2. Free Bird

So I've already heard this song before. It's a fine song, nothing is technically wrong with it. It has stellar guitar solo, it has a nice beat. It feels laid-back for when it wants to feel laidback, it feels hype when it's hype. And really, truly, that guitar solo is excellent. Not personally my vibe, but I can understand why it's a classic in rock. Personally, though, in terms of ridiculously long guitar solos I prefer Queen's Brighton Rock.

3. Around the World

I've already heard this as well. So, instead of me giving my notes of my first listen I'm going to take a moment to gush about how much I love Daft Punk and Discovery as an album. My favorite Daft Punk album is actually Random Access Memories, but my first song I was introduced to by them was Around the World, and something about the repetition and the layering makes me happy and considering this was my intro song, it has a special place in my heart. However, I prefer the live album's version of this song where they spliced this with Harder Better. If you haven't listened to the rest of it, I implore that you listen to the rest of Discovery. It's an excellent album - though I think that nostalgia clouds most's memories and that I prefer RAM over Discovery for its more experimental songs.

I am slightly disappointed that Around the World was recommended rather than some of their more "obscure" songs (at least, as obscure as Daft Punk gets) but you can never really go wrong with the classics.

Follow up: My favorite song of Daft Punk's is Giorgio by Moroder

4. New Vegas's Music

So I've actually played all of New Vegas several times over and I love that video game as well. I think that the music in it is excellent and that it's very good at getting the atmosphere across. Unfortunately, while I was wandering, I got sick of listening to the same 42 minutes of music over and over and over. But that is not to say that I think that any of the music is bad, it's just I listened to it far too much. It's good. What is there more to say?

So. This song sounds familiar, and to be completely frank, I don't exactly know where I heard this from, but I do remember listening to this before. Maybe it was in my dad's car? Maybe my mom's? It screams 80s though. From the singing style to the beat. Made me smile.

Yeah, it has this familiar feel to it like if you know you've heard it before. Also, yes it's pretty 80's and I love it. Glad you like it yourself.

The Mechanisms are a personal favorite. They basically do rock/metal (I'm not entirely sure which genre they count as since most things I hear under those two genres isn't quite the same kind of sound but just let it be known that it absolutely bops) musicals without any visual performance. Each of their main albums tells a single story and they're all based on fairytales/mythology given a sci-fi twist. Their first one had a bunch of Grimms fairytales, their second was Greek mythology, then King Arthur, and their last was Norse mythology, if that helps give an idea. They're also all tragedies. Consider that a warning.

This is their first (the Grimms' fairytales one). Not my favorite album of their main ones, but I love every single one of those anyway and it's their shortest one if I remember correctly. Definitely a good first listen if you'd like to get into their stuff. Make sure not to shuffle it, though. Since the albums are basically non-visual musicals, putting them out of order is kinda like shuffling the scenes of a musical.

(Pump Shanty is one of my favorites from this album)

I have actually heard of them! My friend made me listen to the Greek Mythology one. I'm listening to the album now, and it seems like to me that half of these are exposition with no music, and half of these are actual songs, so I will list off the ones that are actually songs here for judgement and then give my thoughts on the story further down in my overall viewpoints.

1. Old King Cole

This made me happy. I like medieval vibes and folk songs and this really gave the right vibe you'd want for something based on Grimm Fairytales. A very good opener track and I think it gives a good view on what the album is going to sound like.

2. Rose Red

The rounds me happy. I did choir for a while there, and the rounds were always my favorite part. It should be no surprise then that the intro and the outro were my favorite parts of this song. Outside of that, I think that the music was fairly good.

3. Pump Shanty

Note from prior to listening: If this is not a sea shanty I will be very disappointed.

Okay so another love I have is Irish folk music so this is fine. It does have sea shanty vibes in the vocal style, but to be completely honest, it feels more rooted in Irish folk than it does a sea shanty. I do quite like it though.

4. Cinders' Song

I was very worried that this would be a ballad, because I'll be honest, they're usually my least favorite in musicals and I easily get bored by them. But I was very pleasantly surprised by this song. That being said, I thought that this was the weakest thus far.

5. Our Boy Jack

I wish that this song was a little bit less drinking song, and a little bit more call and response? Or maybe protest song style? But for what it is, it was a-

While I was writing this, the next narrative bit came on. The fact that it's a drinking song makes a lot more sense now. Okay, never mind, forget my complaint. That makes perfect sense actually.

6. Sleeping Beauty

This one made me smile. I like Jonny. He's funny. I still don't like ballads, but somehow the style that they've chosen helps lessen the absolute boredom that I usually feel instead. I think I figured it out what it is, though, this is the song that helped me figure it out.

7. No Happy Ending

So this song title reminded me that this is going to be a tragedy. The Irish folk is back. This time I think that the instrumentation makes it a bit lacking. I think a heavier drum sound would've been better. But I do really like this style of music so I like this song.

8. Laid in Blood

This one grated on my nerves. I think this is because this just reiterated everything that we learned in the narration. It's also the most dragging ballad

Overall thoughts:

Okay I'm going to be honest I don't like dark reimaginings of fairytales most of the time. But I gave it as fair of a chance as I could, and I think the best description I could give was that this is a completely different story with some of the same aesthetics of the Grimm stories. When I divorce it from the source material, I think that it's a pretty good story for what it is. I think that the style of music that they chose to do this is very reminiscent of folk music which saved a lot of the ballads from grating on my nerves and also fit very well into the whole fairy tale aesthetic which are generally a collection of fables and folk tales anyways.

Overall, pretty alright. I just lowkey wish for something more if that makes sense.

1. Pain in the World

Okay. So. I'll be honest. I got busy answering some DMs and lowkey just left the album playing in the background. My b. I believe this is a case of "I like this artist but not that specific song" though because the song itself didn't leave that much of a big impression on me, a bit of some bluesy rock is all. But I did actually like some of the tracks on the other album, so thank you for introducing me to them.

2. Sails of Charon

The guitar solo at the beginning was excellent, however I felt that the vocals were lacking. I thought that the beat was really good though. And I thought that those guitars and drums were doing the Lord's work - really those instrumentals were top notch. I just wish that the lyrics and the vocals were better.

3. Man on the Silver Mountain

So I think you're going to start seeing a theme here with my thoughts on classic rock as a genre, to be completely honest. I really liked the instrumentals, and the intro leading up to the vocals I thought were really good. But then the vocals came through, and I thought that it really took away from the music again. Guitars in this song? Pretty good. Bass guitar was doing a pretty good job as well. The drums seemed oddly subdued. Guitar solo? I thought that it didn't really mesh very well with the rest of the song's coherency, but it meshed better than the vocals.

4. Lifer

Okay so basically if you recommended this to me when I was a younger lad, I probably would go for it. However, post-hard rock phase, I just believe that I have found music that is in the same genre that I go for more than specifically this song. I'm hoping that the fifth I will enjoy more, as this seems to be their first song that they released.

5. Rehab

My biggest prior complaint to Lifer that I felt that it was a bit generic, which I assumed was because it was the first song that this band produced and therefore they were trying to play it safe for their debut. I am happy to say that this was definitely a step in the right direction. It felt a lot less generic with the changing rhythms and the alternations between screaming and singing which felt a lot more necessary. Also the drumming was really good in this song. Good song, I liked this one.

6. Freya

I thought this song was fine. I'll be honest, I don't really have any notes for it. It was fine. The guitar solo was alright. I thought the beat was pretty good. It just didn't really speak to me all that much, to be honest.

7. Empty Temples

I liked this one far more. The guitarist's skills could be heard a lot more, and I thought the singing fit far better with this instrumentation than it did the more heavily distorted sounds of the prior song you recommended to me from them. I also like a good folksy cowboy vibe every now and then

8. The Killing Road

I liked this guitar solo far more than the others. I also thought that the mixing on this song was done pretty good. Singing was pretty good as well. Also the drum fills that were thrown in every now and then were good. Liked this one.

9. Trust

I liked the lil drumming intro. I like a good drum moment, and I also like a good bass moment. The strings were also a welcome edition to the mostly classic and hard rock compilation you sent. I think out of the artists you sent me that fall into this genre, they're my favorites. The switch up in the middle is also very fun. I like songs that can keep me on my toes.

10. Into the Void

I chafe a bit at the idea of Black Sabbath being "obscure." I thought that this was the best mixing out of them all. I thought that the singing cut through all that distortion very well. The fact that they have the bass so high up makes me smile. This also has a changing beat which helped keep me engaged. Good song.
