Month 1 [On Campus]

Kenji stares all around the room for some moments, fascinated at all the occult paraphernalia existing in there. He greets the frog man politely and asks him who might be the supervisor of the lab and if they could experiment on the subject of elemental summoning.

"The lab has no dedicated supervisor, but I can provide you with instruction if you need. I am well versed in the arts of summoning, and have 300 years of experience." The frog creature smiles and licks its eyes.

Mnemon Esali

Esali smiles at the helpful creature and considers it's offer. "Mmm, I think I'd like to at least get started on my own. But if you could keep an eye out to make sure I don't level the building or something, I'd appreciate that. I tend to get carried away sometimes."

"I am afraid that i'll be requiring your assistance right from the start, esteemed helper. I'd like to learn the ingredients used to summon an elemental, as well as if there are variations according to the type of elemental that we want to summon. Then i'd like to know more details about the procedure and try to repeat it step by step under your - apparently - expert guidance. Since you've been doing this for 300 hundred years, i imagine that you must be quite the expert by now".

To find such a learnt individual, despite his appearance, is always a boon and even more if he's eager to help as this one seems to. Kenji asks him, then eagerly awaits his answer, anxious to start experimenting in the ways of elemental summoning.

"Yes master. The basic components of a summoning are always the same, whether using sorcery or lesser magics. You need a circle of salt and something to call to your target. For thaumaturgy, anything from a poem to a flower or the air from your lungs. I also find a few pints of virgin's blood never goes amiss." He makes a purring sound as if in fond memory, and hops over to a shelf and begins collecting jars which he distributes on a nearby table. A bundle of candles, a jar of salt, and stranger items begin to form an irregular heap. "If you give me leave of my regular duties, I could easily spend the few hours needed to teach you how to beckon a particular kind of creature. What would you desire to call?"

"That is excellent. Well, since i am a new student and you seem to possess a great deal of knowledge on the subject, i'll give you the leave you requested so that you can teach me about the summoning process and as a matter of fact, i'll let you pick the kind of creature that would be appropriate to summon, for an apprentice in the occult arts like me".

Kenji's face almost shines with enthusiasm for finding such an eager mentor in the ways of summoning, in the face of that frogman and can't wait to start experimenting and learning on that interesting occult subject.

"Indeed, master. I believe I have a suitable project in mind. I will teach you the ritual, but bear in mind that many of the more unusual items can be replaced with gifts of essence in the future." he putters about, giving a continuous stream of helpful advice. "I believe this ritual will serve you even better once you have initiated into the emerald circle. Without sorcerous power, this can summon only the infant children of the spirits we seek. It is an air elemental good for many uses." He hands Kenji a bowl, a jar of rainwater, and a knife and directs him through the steps of the summoning.

You may spend 1 XP to memorize the ritual for later.

As the frog instructs Kenji, Esali learns the difficulties of working from memory. Even perfect recall can't explain exactly what that silvery stuff used halfway through was, so she does her best to identify the ingredients on sight. Still, you learn more from mistakes than successes, and with a knowledgeable supervisor so near, she's unlikely to make a catastrophic blunder. So it's with a eager mind that she too begins her "summoning".

Kenji watches carefully, as the frogman gathers the materials and reagents, then places them as per his instructions, noting dutifully the procedure.

OOC:

I'll spent the XP and memorize the ritual shown to me in detail by the frogman.

As kenji completes the last pieces of the circle, he feels a tiny prickle run across his forearm, and sparks appear in the air and begin to dance. They coalesce, and suddenly he is confronted by what looks almost like a dragon, chill winds puffing from its mouth.

He realizes that the frogman has been edging steadily backwards towards the door. Catching his eye, it says "That's my part done. Now you just need to negotiate with it. Good Luck!" and turns and runs. The serpent roars, shattering beakers around the room in a fierce bellow.

Esali jumps at the appearance of the creature, but does her best to continue her work. She's heard about the catastrophes that can result from abandoning a ritual halfway through, but if her friend seems to be in too much trouble, she'll take the consequences and go help. Of course, it wouldn't hurt to bring an elemental of her own in as backup.

Sorry, should have said this before. Since she's expected to 'reproduce' the summoning, that's exactly what she's trying to do. So specifically she'd be trying for a Cloud Person like Kour, or quite probably Kour himself. Basic thinking being that if (when) this first attempt fails, she can work from the ground up with the their "lab assistant". Though depending on how his "helping" Kenji turns out, those plans may be revised.

Working from memory proves more difficult than Esali may have expected. Though it goes well at first, the roar of the thing that kenji summoned distracts her. When she looks back, she can't remember whether to light the incense before straining the windleaf or after.

The situation is further complicated by the swarm of angry microelementals which start swarming around her, evidently attracted to the smell of the reagents in the ritual with their jars broken.

Intelligence + Occult to overcome the difficulties.

Kenji, looking at the air serpent before him, marshalls all of his mental resources to compose himself and impose his will on the elemental.

"Serpent of the Wind. Elemental of Air. Heed my words. I am a Prince of the Earth. An exalted member of the Dragonblooded Host and by the authority, power and grace bestowed upon me by Mela, the Immaculate Dragon of Air, i ask of you to calm down and cooperate with me. I seek not to harm you, neither to enslave you. I merely seek your help as I gradually uncover the secrets of my elementally aspected heritage and your elemental nature. Calm down and be a helpful and esteemed companion to this Prince of the Earth that stands before you".

Esali takes a deep breath to focus her thoughts. First day of class and she's already behind. Now some noises and elemental gnats threaten her summoning? It's one thing to fail due to lack of understanding or experience, but this would just be pathetic. No, she won't- can't let herself be distracted.

Spending Willpower to channel Conviction

Intelligence + Occult + Conviction = 9 Successes

As Esali shoos the annoying elementals aside and focuses on the last parts of the ritual, she feels a gust of air pick up and the cyclone of earlier forms. Kour appears, holding a book. "Yes, what is it?" he asks, a little testily. "Oh, you're one of Senex's students, aren't you? Let me guess, you decided to experiment on your own a little?" he asks. The draconic elemental roars again, flails against the summoning circle, and snorts a small bolt of lightning from it's nostrils at kenji, which dissipates harmlessly at the wall of salt. Kenji notices the barrier is beginning to be disturbed by the beast's antics.

Kour looks over, and his eyes widen in horror. "And got in over your head, it looks like! Do you have any idea how dangerous even an infant storm serpent is?" he exclaims.

Esali is plainly on the verge of panic when Kour appears and the elemental's reaction does nothing to help her mood, "We do now and we're sorry but there was a frog-thing and lessons and- WE DON'T HAVE TIME FOR THIS! What do we do?!"

"Indeed. He said he was the helper for this lab and guided me through the summoning process. I couldn't imagine it would go that bad", said Kenji, still trying to compose himself and impose his will upon the emboldened air serpent.
