Hello, my name is Mythy! I've an idea I wanted to see if anyone was interested in! Despite the name, this setting is my own and in no way affiliated with an older story series I vaguely remember.
In this world, Specialists are monster slayers and soldiers without compare. They all possess a large wellspring of barrier, which is the magic of this world. Barrier is both a shield always active when you are conscious and aware of danger, and the resource used to activate kinship magic. Some may have enough barrier to take a tank shell fully unscathed and have enough left over to cleave the whole armored machine in half.
Kinship magic is founded on the principle of kinship with monsters. Without getting too deep into the specifics, once an aspirant bonds with their kinship monster, they will be able to use kinship magic. This includes evocation (telekinesis, fireballs, etc), transformation (growing claws, spines, etc), aspects (granting speed, power, etc) and enchantment (affecting equipment with various effects)
The player characters will begin as aspirants beginning their assessment before even joining the academy (early twenties generally). The first part of the RP will be in the Forest of Trials, in which the PCs will find a young monster they form their kinship with, and this will be their companion for the RP. After that we will be put into teams (which will vary in the final size depending on how many players we get) and the story will begin proper.
