So, since I've been asked by a couple people, and in fairness to all.

You are starting in ... Phoenix lands!

It is early fall, and you have been assigned by your daimyo's to assist in the collection and assessment of the Imperial Taxes!

Do I get to intimidate people into paying their taxes? Please?
"We wouldn't want anything...bad...to happen to your lands if you didn't pay your proper taxes, now would we samurai-san?"

Unfounded Accusations:

(Mod summary, all the penalties and bonuses listed here were all already mentioned in the mod)

You have successfully collected the taxes from the village of roku mura.

You also foiled a powerful Maho-Tsukai, the peasant named Isanagi.

(Glory gains / losses summary)

Otomo Fujiyari has spoken highly of your deeds, and you all gained 1 glory.

Otomo Fujiyari has spoken even more highly of Seppun Shizue, who gained an additional 2 glory.

The poetry of Asako Gregor has began to circulate, he gained 1 glory.

Yoritomo Shiori complained about the mean ronin Sugo, instead of solving the problem herself. As a result of the gossip, she gained 1 infamy. However, by complaining to the headman, who does not want any trouble from Imperials and Great Clan samurai in the future, Sugo has been forced to leave town.

Other rewards / penalties.

Asako Gregor found an advanced Maho scroll, for a version of Blood Armor that required no blood expenditure to cast. However, he decided to burn it, much to the dismay of the GM.

Asako Gregor has agreed to be a patron for the smith, [Tsi] Gao, who has taken up residence in his household. Asako Gregor's renewing Koku is reduced by 3. Gao has started work on a Naginata, at Asako Gregor's request.

All players gained 6 XP.

Tsi Gao. I've hired him to work for me and am deducting the majority of my refreshing money to pay for his services. I'd kinda like to know what benefit this is providing me. While not tightly bound to my funds, I do have a sense that a quarter of my resources are being consumed to support him. If I find his services to be insufficient, I'll probably pass him on to some other patron.

This is what I understand from crafting rules. This is entirely based on rules as written. I don't know if our GM overlords think that things should / should not be expedited differently from what's here:

1) Crafting an item takes 1 hour per koku of the item's value.

2) The process will cost 1/10 of the final items value

3) Crafting the item will require a number of raises based on how good of quality the final item will be.

4) The item must be crafted in a location of quality equivalent to or greater than the final item's quality.

So, a fine quality naginata would cost me 10 koku, take 100 hours to craft, and require a crafting roll TN 30. An excellent naginata would cost me 100 koku, take 1000 hours to craft, and require a crafting roll TN 40. Given Tsi Gao's skill at craftsmanship, I don't doubt he can make the TNs, though he might need some luck for an excellent item. My main concern is the cost and time.

Ben expressed his assumption that the 3 koku I would be supplying would be divided as such: 1 koku to pay for Gao's living expenses, 2 koku to pay for materials. At this rate, I would be able to claim I'd spent enough koku to create a fine naginata in 5 mods. In order to have Gao create an excellent weapon, I'd need to fund 50 mods worth of koku to him. Based on the GM's claims about scope of the campaign, this seems to be longer than we intend for our character to last. Also, the crafting time for an excellent quality naginata would take 125 days, working 8 hours / day. Not knowing the duration of the campaign, I'm not entirely sure if this is feasible either. So, the only way to benefit would be to assume that I can only get a fine quality item out of the craftsman or I would need to make arrangements to acquire resources at a rate faster than my salary and have enough time for the craftsman to complete his work.

Now, another part of crafting is the rules which include the creation of nemuranai. The core book describes the character mechanics for creating nemuranai, and states that additional, thematic requirements can be added based on a GM's descretion. Mechanically, a minor nemuranai can be created if a shugenja is involved in the process. The shugenja must be able to cast a spell of the appropriate element of rank 3. At the end of the crafting, the shugenja must spend 2 experience points. The TN for the crafting roll is increased by 15. If the shugenja is not the actual crafter, he must be present for the full process and the TN is increased by an additional 5. Thus, an average quality item would have a TN of 40, and an excellent one would have a TN of 50.

My question is, would I be allowed to have Gao create a fine quality item, use my character's ability to cast rank 3 void spells, and spend 2 xp in an attempt to create a nemuranai (assuming the smith succeeds at a roll TN 50)? The core book lists a few options for what a nemuranai can do, though I have something particular in mind based on who will actually be using this item:

1/week the item present the bearer a riddle, preferably while he is in a public location. If the bearer answers the riddle correctly, the item recites a haiku praising his wisdom. If the bearer fails to answer the riddle, the item recites a haiku expressing its disappointment in its wielder.

I think it's a problem with the fact that our resources happen in a time indistinct manner. If we play two mods that occur a 3 days apart, you accumulate 4 koku of material in 4 days. whereas if nothing happens over winter and two mods are 2 months apart, then only 4 koku has been earned in that time. If we want to allow crafting (which is apparently the intent) our wealth levels need to be scaled to some rate independent of mods. So if you have X koku refreshing, you generate Y koku per week of 'background' time. That way you could also have someone else contribute to the funding of the item using their background koku for a penalty to their per mod stipend.

Mod 2:

Setting: Phoenix lands, <town name>

Blurb: You are assigned to escort a minor tax assessor through the peaceful lands of the Phoenix. What could be simpler?

No, this will be an actual small city. I would post the mod title, but it would give a hint as to what the solution is. :-P

I just need to grab a random small city name from the core book.

All players gained 2 honor for helping Sugo, the petulant ronin, when he was injured.

Other rewards / penalties.

Agasha Mai was championed by Rea in a duel, thus expending the ally.

For the record, I healed his immediate injuries to bring him to consciousness, and Agasha Mai took the time to put his leg in a splint.
