Consciousness came to Casper when the smell of coffee sinked under the door of their room, floating up to greet their nose. They gave a sniff, appreciating the smell as they rested, eyes closed, in the space between asleep and fully awake. Though not a particular fan of the taste of coffee, Casper had always liked the smell, a reminder that the night was over, and that the day was about to begin. They considered going back to sleep, remembering nothing extraordinary about the day, but after a second decided that no, they should get up and get dressed, maybe even interact with the other residents of their apartment.
The thought filled them with warmth as they sat up, smiling, giving a little stretch. Aaron wasn’t in bed next to them, but that was normal- Aaron got up earlier, doing who knows what before Casper woke. At the very least it always made its side of the bed, and that was really all Casper could be bothered to ask of it. They did the same before getting dressed, hesitating as their hands brushed over a pink, cat-eared hoodie.
It was cute, and soft, and something Casper doubted they could find, let alone afford. Wearing it would definitely upset Aaron… but it looked so cute. It was really a shame they had never worn it…
In the end, their worry over Aaron’s feelings won out, and instead of that, they put on one of their more standard cat sweaters. The rest of the process was uneventful, and they were out of their room fairly quickly, greeting the others they lived with that were actually around, namely Aaron and Terry, with a smile and a wave before weaving into the kitchen and heating some water. They pulled down a box of frosted mini wheats, something that made their inner child scream in delight, pouring milk before pouring the water into a cup, placing a tea infuser inside.
They joined the others at the table, for the first time taking in how bad their sibling looked.
Before they could ask anything, however, Terry was asking them, “So, ready to go back to college?”
As Aaron groaned quietly, eyes shutting ever so lightly, it finally clicked for Casper that today was important.
They blinked, tilting their head ever so slightly to the side. “That’s today?”
Terry laughed, eyes crinkling as they smiled. “Yeah, that’s today. I should’ve reminded you yesterday, huh?”
They nodded, eating their cereal. “I’m not ready for more school…” they admitted.
Again, Terry laughed. “I don’t think anyone ever is, babe.” They stood up, ruffled Casper’s hair, and said, “I’ve got to get going.” And she left the room.
Casper casually straightened their hair, then fell into a less than comfortable silence as they ate, glancing at Aaron ever so fun.
Terry passed through again after a few moments, shoes now clacking against the floor of the apartment, bag over their shoulder. “See you squirts later!” Finally, she was gone for good.
After a couple more seconds, Casper managed to find it in themself to attempt conversation. “...Did you know school started today?”
“Eat your breakfast faster. I do not want to be late because of you.” It didn’t even look up.
Casper looked back down at their cereal, pausing for a moment before starting to eat faster. When they were almost done, Aaron took their bowl.
When Casper looked up at it, sad, Aaron’s face stayed stone cold. “I need to wash these.” It went into the kitchen, and Casper watched.
Aaron noticed, and immediately huffed. “Go put your shoes on and grab what you need.” So Casper did that. Aaron did so as well soon after, and soon enough the pair was walking to college.
