Fandom [Mission] Escorts and Farewells

Jacob Arkonius Foles
Jacob stuck to the back of the group, not just to cover their tracks, but also to keep an eye on the rest of his comrades so he could intervene if something went wrong. From what he had seen so far, they all looked like they could handle themselves, but the fact that three of the four of them were still in their teens made Jacob worry about their whole combat experience. However, they were heading to the final leg of their journey, now more than halfway through the mission, he assumed. So there wasn't much longer, and he doubted there would be much of a problem.

As the group continued onwards, they reached the open grasslands, Jacob quickly glanced up at the sun beating down on them, then turned his direction to his exposed arms. He had been wearing a jacket this entire time, though with the sleeves rolled up, mostly so he could avoid being followed as he had made his way to the prison by hiding his identity, but that wasn't the only reason. Sure enough, his pale skin was starting to turn a light pink, the beginning of a sunburn. If there was one thing that always had Jacob nervous, it was the sun. After he had been cured of his childhood illness, he had found that he was more susceptible to the sun, and burned rather easily. And over the years, it had only gotten worse.

He rolled his sleeves down up to his wrists, and then flipped the hood of the jacket up to protect his face with the shade it cast on him. He then paused as the rest of the group did from Royce's complaints, and Jacob took a moment to mutter a quick spell under his breath. A light blue magic circle appeared in the center of his chest, it being about the size of an apple. Once it appeared, Jacob felt cool mist swirl around underneath his clothes, keeping his body cool in case he got too warm. He closed his eyes and let out a content sigh as the thin layer of mist moved around his body.

When he opened them again, he saw Viridian's cart for Royce. Jacob frowned, slightly wanting to make Royce continue walking, but that would be rather inhumane for a group of Guild mages to do to a prisoner. So, Jacob bit his tongue as Viridian told him to get in, almost wanting to let out a small chuckle at the dry reply. As this all went on, Sylvia and Bill seemed to be getting along, and Maki seemed to be rather reserved. So far, no problems. Jacob looked out to the expanse of grass, just barely seeing the desert beyond, and spoke quietly to himself. "Just a little more..."

Maki had been silent for most of the trip. There wasn't much to say at this point. Having Adellon involved made her a bit nervous. If it came to it, she didn't want to fight friends. Not to mention, some of the people on the mission seemed like fairly decent people. Although there were those that were irking her as well. Mostly the powerful ones that were presuming to take on large amounts of responsibility. They were treating her grandfather like public enemy number one. They just didn't understand, and they probably never would.

When her grandfather asked for a break, she wondered if he was trying to put something into play. Either way, it didn't matter. So far he hadn't caused any trouble for them, and if he just wanted a rest, that should've been perfectly acceptable. To Maki's dismay, however, most of them still seemed nervous around her grandfather. They didn't want to stop. Instead they decided to make a carriage and keep moving. She had been trying to keep her mouth shut about things, but that was simply too much.

Putting herself in the path of the carriage and throwing her arms out, she called out, "Everyone stop! Are you so scared that you can't even let him have a few moments of peace?! Where he's going, he won't likely have another chance! I will never get a chance to spend time with him like this again! So I don't care what you think! If you're scared! Even after all the precautions you've taken. I DON'T CARE! Just suck it up for five minutes and act like human beings for once! Just give us five minutes and we can keep going. That's not such an unreasonable thing to ask."

Constanze von Disastre
The young lady had remained quiet for the duration of the wait, watching both Adellon Thrace and the glistening crystals that were the sea’s waves. She could see the furrow of his brow, and the shadows of a scowl on his visage. He was unhappy with something. Was it her presence that made him uneasy? If so, it wouldn't be the first time that it did. But there was something deeper to that uneasiness. It was only after the small crowd from the locale arrived who came to greet them that his appearance suddenly softened, especially at the sudden mention of his name in an awestruck voice. How curious that her name was included as well. She didn't think she was that popular. She let the young man handle the crowd, and though she was more inclined to keep her operations in secrecy rather than just confirm outright it was the Ilan Vair affair, she let him talk. It would be rude to deride him right now for his openness. The crowd didn't seem particularly dangerous, and the sheriff looked cantankerous enough to put off any questions directed at him. He probably didn't even know anything about Ilan Vair. A sudden thought came to mind- would she be just as grouchy and out of touch? She shook the thought off.

“You look pleased, Master Thrace.” Constanze patted Thrace’s shoulder, and gave a lopsided smirk towards his direction, then made an attempt at locating his worries. “Perhaps you realise now, even as a dark mage, there are those who see you in a completely different light.” She turned on her heels, towards the rest of the group. “Come now, Master Thrace. We must away. It wouldn't do to keep them waiting.

Constanze von Disastre & Adellon Thrace

Adellon was originally focused only on his thoughts and on the sheriff, until Constanze put her hand on his shoulder. He blinked a few times in rapid succession. Which was a common sign of his surprise. Then he looked to her as she spoke of being a dark mage seen in a different light. He would normally be offended at the dark mage implication, but the way she said it didn't give him a feeling that she meant dark as in criminal.

He searched her face for any deeper meaning or emotion, but was met only with a cute smile and an eye that seemed….more knowing than someone her age should have. She must have had a horrible, horrible childhood before she found Blue Pegasus. Yet she seemed incredibly refined and well put together. He pursed his lip to the right in thought. How curious.

He nodded once and turned back to the sheriff. “She is right, things are incredibly time sensitive.” He pointed at the woman. “She should be out for quite a while seeing as she was knocked out not too long ago. She is restrained, and possibly insane. Please take care as you handle her.” With that he turned on his heel and began walking with Constanze in the direction of their group.

The shorter mage bowed to the gaggle of citizens, allowing, once again, Adellon to handle the formalities, and tailed alongside him. She thought to ask of the quizzical look he cast her way prior, but thought better of it. Still, it would not do to keep an awkward silence between them as they caught up with their peers.

“Master Thrace,” she started, craning her neck just so she can meet his eyes, “know that the title of Master is not so easily earned in my eyes. Your ability and spirit, however, speaks little ill of you. Quite the opposite, actually. As such, you have more than earned my respect, both as a person and a mage.” She paused, and turned her attention back to the front. “That having been said, do you suppose I could just call you Adellon in private moments such as these? It tires me. Master Foles receives such treatment as well, do not fret.” She added the last statement quickly, after realising what she said was and could be taken poorly out of context.

Adellon was taken completely by surprise by Constanze’s words. He blinked slowly one time and considered the respectful compliment and request. “That is entirely fine by me. As such, I hope you do not mind me simply calling you Constanze in return.” He carefully contained the pride welling up from her compliments, not wishing to look over eager without reason. Though perhaps his motions were a bit more exuberant without his noticing.

“I know not of your abilities first hand, but Jacob respects you it seems. That speaks very well towards your capability and bearing. Your mannerisms and demeanor further confirm that you are a competent, composed individual. I'm sure we'll get along quite well, if I may be so presumptuous.” He adjusted his glasses and scratched at his mild beard growth as he looked down to meet her eyes. Well… eye. He was rather curious what was under her mask, but figured it to be a possibly sore subject. Probably a disfiguration, which he himself understands going to lengths to cover up.

“You may. Call me Constanze, that is. I would have expected no more from Adellon Thrace himself. To know you see me as an asset brings me elation. However,” she gave a theatrical sigh, and brushed a lock of hair away from the steel mask on her face, “any upstart could feign airs of refinement with any combination of natural talent, acting classes, and blind luck.” The girl waved her hand dismissively. “Instead of simply words, I shall prove myself as a capable mage worth any actual attention with my actions.”

Adellon nodded and suddenly broke out in a wide smile. “That's exactly what I like to hear the most. Reputation and impressions are well and good, but proving yourself firsthand is a true pleasure.” He rolled his neck over each shoulder, loosening up tension he hadn't realized had been building up. “That's how I've always tried to act. My guild faces enough public misconception. I won't rely solely on reputation, status, or any such frivolity I will show my strength, dedication, and belief in others in all I do.” He turned a more grim and serious over the next few moments as he thought of Royce and the mission at hand. “I'll not allow anyone to mar our guild’s name further.”

Constanze did not reply immediately. She lingered in silence for a few more moments, then her wry smile returned to her face. “I will not commend your resolve any more, in fright of seeming like a star-blinded fan. I will say that, however, we will get along well, Adellon. It is, again I must admit, an honor to work alongside you. I look forwards to seeing your strength, dedication, and belief. To that end, it matters not to me what your guild is on the tongue of the commonfolk.” She, too, up to recently it seemed, suffered from an adverse effect of the wagging of tongues of the people. Or, in her case, the lack thereof.

Adellon shook off his serious tone and gave Constanze a brief, sunny smile. “I feel honored as well. Thank you for the kind words. Now, we should make real haste to catch up, no?” With that he took off at a moderate run through the small wooded area in the direction of the group. If Adellon remembered correctly, which he nearly always did, the wooded area would thin out and eventually open up into a grassland. If the group had reached that far it should be easy to spot them in the open terrain even without resorting to his magic binoculars.

It did not take the pair long, as Adellon’s memory did not fail him, and soon, their group was within sight. Constanze nodded to her companion, and quickened her pace, with Adellon beside her, to the group. “The perpetrator has been delivered to a group of civilians. They will take care of her,” she explained as she neared the group. “Hopefully,” she added.

Viridian Lannerly - Sabretooth A rank mage

- Unrelenting -

When Maki put herself in front of the carriage's path the vehicle simply swerved around her and kept going. If Maki tried to reposition herself in front of it again then the carriage would simply keep going forward at a slow enough pace that it merely pushed her along instead of running over the intractable mage, it would stop if Maki did something foolish like throwing herself under the wheels however.

"We aren't stopping and if you keep blocking the carriage then we'll just make him keep walking instead," Viridian said, with what she felt was a commendably restrained tone. "We're obliged and willing to provide for your grandfather's safety and well-being but now that we're using the carriage neither of those are at risk by continuing. Not only that, your grandfather has already been the victim of one assassination attempt on this journey and I would prefer not to expose him to the possibility of a second, more competent one for longer than is necessary. If you want to spend more time with him than I recommend getting into the carriage and doing it instead of wasting previous minutes arguing with us,"

The whole display put Viridian on edge. Earlier Maki and Royce had been given time to speak privately, now Viridian was regretting that leniency; the granddaughter could easily be a confederate of some escape attempt. Viridian was therefore surveying the surrounding area more warily than before when Adellon and Constanze caught back up to report their successful handoff.

well that's one thing less to worry about Viridian thought, allowing the tension in her body to abate slightly. Viridian still didn't approve of Adellon's decision to intrude upon the mission but if he was willing to follow along with their plans then he could be considered more of an asset than a liability. It was nice to have the Blue Pegasus mage back too; Viridian felt it had ultimately been the best choice to split up as they had, but it would have been unfortunate if they were attacked while their strength was divided.

Royce Obertuck
Initially, Royce was concerned that his request for a break would be taken as something too severe and that it would completely be ignored entirely. If that were the case, though, he could just plop down on the ground. They’d have to stop then and, theoretically - anyway - none of them had any magic that could force him to walk. He had promised to cooperate, but he hadn’t promised to cooperate quickly. He could take his own time doing it.

However, despite his doubts, Royce apparently had been heard. He was actually surprised by it, too. That much was clear as day on his face. Sure, it wasn’t exactly what he had asked for, but it would still offer him the reprieve that he’d requested.

Just as he was about to nod and comply with Viridian’s request that he step into the weird carriage thing, though, Maki stepped up and started arguing about the whole situation. He moved to step towards his granddaughter and opened his mouth to start telling her that this was actually an acceptable alternative in his mind, but she was already going and he knew her well enough to know that interrupting her then wouldn’t really have changed much at all. It was best for him to hold off and wait for an opening to speak his own mind.

Watchful and intelligent eyes flickered between Maki and Viridian as their argument unfolded and he ran through several different possibilities in his mind although he doubted it would get as far as his imagination wandered. Finally, he did see an opportunity for him to voice his own thoughts, though, when Constanze and Adellon rejoined their party.

“Actually, Maki,” he intervened with some small amount of caution. If she was anywhere near as feisty as he remembered he had been in his youth, some amount of caution was warranted. “I would be delighted if our escorts would allow us to enjoy a carriage ride together. At first, I agree, it might have seemed like a bit much. It could’ve put a strain on someone’s magic and potentially endangered us in the case of an attack, but now that our group is back to near full size, it seems more appropriate.” He used his words carefully so as to place himself on his granddaughter’s side initially and then he used the change in situation to justify a change in his opinion. Hopefully it would play out well enough.

“Come, Maki,” he beckoned. “Let us not keep the group stopped for too long, lest they change their minds.”

Jacob Arkonius Foles
Jacob watched silently from the back of the group as Maki argued with Viridian about forcing them to keep moving. The cart was definitely a good idea from the viewpoint as an escort for the prisoner, as Royce with his age could still rest while they didn't lose any time. The only drawback was Viridian's continuous use of magic power, but she didn't seem concerned about it in any way, so Jacob didn't see a reason to worry too much about her. If need be, should Viridian's magic run low, the rest Royce got would hopefully be enough where they could finish the journey on foot, as by now they should be close enough that they were essentially home free. Jacob let go a sigh of relief, glad that most of the mission had gone more or less unhindered except for the small quarrel on the beach.

Once Adellon and Constanze returned, Jacob's relief grew more. Of course having two S-Class mages was helpful in case of another attack, since if one of them was beaten the other could take up their place. There was also the fact that Adellon was a formidable opponent, something Jacob knew all too well. Then having Constanze there was also fantastic, as Jacob couldn't think of a more capable mage in Blue Pegasus below the Guildmaster and himself. Then there was the potential he could see in Viridian, Bill, and Sylvia. He was glad that capable mages were here.

Jacob acknowledged Constanzes report that they had handed the attacker over to the locals to handle with a curt nod. As Royce got into the cart and beckoned for Maki to join him, Jacob walked back over to Adellon and Constanze, stopping for a moment with an eyebrow raised as he looked at them both. His pause lasted a moment, then stepped up to them, giving a pleasant smile. "I'm glad the two of you made it back so soon. I had a feeling the two of you would get along." He turned back to the rest of the group, spinning one of his silver bracelets on his wrist. "I hope that I'll still have some time to enjoy my little vacation once this is all wrapped up, however. Recently the sun and the heat has been more unbearable." He perked up a bit and grinned at the two of them. "You two should take a day or two off after this mission as well! Come and visit me and we can have some fun and relaxation, right?" Jacob paused, then coughed awkwardly. "I mean, we should focus on the mission first before any vacation. My apologies."
