Nanami Kyriu

Yesterday

Nanami left the written exam classroom thinking she was going to faint. Her heart thundered away and her brain throbbed. It might have been the precursor to an anxiety attack... it would not have been the first... but this time, she felt it was a little different.

It was the pressure. The sheer panic at the idea of failing. But... it was also hope.

The girl clutched one hand to her chest and shut her eyes, retreating into a dark corner where she hoped no one would see her, and ran through the exam again in her mind. At least, she tried to. Nanami could not remember all the questions or all the answers she had given, but she was sure they were correct when she wrote them. They had to be. Nanami had always been a great student, and she would usually walk out of an exam knowing she had passed with flying colours. But this was no ordinary exam. This one was tough. A true test in the most merciless sense, meant to fail people, to eliminate those that did not make the cut. Nanami knew she could not fail this one, or the practical exam. If she failed either, if she could not get to U.A., there was a real chance that she could not enroll in that school. And if she could not do that...

Nanami felt the weight of the photograph on her breast pocket. It was a copy of a copy, but it had the same weight on her heart as the original. A weight that suffocated her. The burden of a responsibility that she had accepted before she even knew what the word `responsibility´ meant, and which now squeezed her heart until it felt as if it would burst. The fear of failing now was more than she could bear, and it made her want to scream because there was not another person in the world that could bear that responsibility for her. Nanami steadied herself on the wall, then walked slowly toward the window, her legs shaky and weak, her lungs feeling still and unresponsive. Her forehead touched the window glass, and the wonderful coolness amplified by the sweat on her skin calmed her down just enough that she could open her eyes and look outside. However, she saw nothing but the image in her photograph. The image of a little girl, a younger version of herself, with a wide and happy smile and her arms partially off-frame, extended toward her.

She could almost hear her sister Hikaru laughing.

Warm tears rolled down Nanami´s cheeks as she struggled to hold herself together. That image, conjured from deep within her heart, calmed her down just enough to remember that there was hope. There was just one more test. One more exam.

And if she could pass it... she just knew.

Nanami knew that her sister Hikaru could be saved.

She would spare no effort.

Start of the exam

It had been a tough road. It seemed even tougher when the examiners clarified that the students could take no gear with them. But today, Nanami was focused. All the tension that poured into her hardened her muscles and her will, and set her blood boiling. With a gesture, she dropped three crumped balls of paper on the ground. One of the examiners looked at her disapprovingly, and she blushed, part excited about the exam, part embarrassed. "Give them ten minutes, ma´am. Don´t touch them until then."

Having said that, Nanami breathed deeply. The girl had never had delusions about being a hero. She didn´t even truly want to be one. All she wanted was to save her sister Hikaru. Therefore, there was no costume or tailored clothing on her. Nanami just wore a denim set of tight jeans and a jacket, paired up with sneakers. Her quirk-caused black-and-white look drew stares, particularly given she was a well-proportioned girl, but Nanami was unable to even notice those. It was strange how her senses were razor-sharp, yet her mind was dulled. She guessed she was having another anxiety episode, but... she knew it would end in a moment.

The examiners gathered the would-be students, gave the last indications and improvised encouragements. Nanami looked at her watch and saw there was barely a minute left to start.

She quickly fished her sister´s photo from her jacket and took another look at her smile. A memory of better times and heartbreak, a reminder of her responsibility and all her efforts to get here, and a piece of her very heart. Her hand shook as she gently folded the picture and slid it into her breast pocket, pressing it as hard against her chest as she could with the tip of her thumb. I´ll do it, Hikaru. It´s do or die for me today. I swear I´ll give it all. For you.

With barely thirty seconds left, Nanami stepped to the front of the line and dropped to the ground in front of everyone, adopting a runner´s pose.

Nanami´s fingertips touched the ground. Her legs bent and her back and bum raised up in the air. Her black hair brushed the ground and her dark eyes, bright and intense behind her glasses, saw only the gate ahead. Her heart pumped, her lungs filled as if they wanted to explode, and her muscles were maddeningly eager to begin. She sensed nothing else. She heard no comments, noticed no stares.

When the gates opened, there was only Nanami´s fierce, desperate need for success, and a heart ready to burst with hope.

The girl had no quirk to help her move fast. She could not fly, float, teleport or slide quicker than anyone else. But she could run, and that was exactly what she did. Her athletic form was peerless as she sped through the gates among the first like a black and white blur. Other candidates overtook her with some ease, but Nanami had a carefully practiced rhythm and a clear objective. A body well trained ran on its own, and that left her mind to work. The fire and the sirens in the testing grounds were no distraction to her, but the mundane objects in the streeth drew her attention.

Firstly, there were cars in the street, and lampposts. The lampposts might have been useful, but these were too long. The cars were not. She ran along the cars, and her fingertips touched the first one, a classic family car that disappeared instantaneously with no fanfare. There was now a small sheet of paper in Nanami´s hand that she quickly transferred into her jacket pockets. She used her quirk a second time with another car and put the resulting paper into a pocket on the other side of her jacket. Nanami was a short girl, and not that fit, therefore she needed to manage her stamina and how many times she used her quirk. Each paper weighed one kilogram, and that was no joke for a girl of her physique. The pockets helped distribute the weight, but she still couldn´t just make papers out of everything around her.

Soon, the sights and sounds of fights exploded all across her front. Those who had outran her were already finding their targets and demolishing them. A robot arm flew through the air and crashed through the windshield of the car next to Nanami, startling her and making her stumble aside before she recovered her running form.

I have to wreck a few of these things, but I don´t know if there will be any left if I don´t hurry!

As she rounded a corner, Nanami found a welcome sight that made her smile. There was a red bicycle chained to a parking space in front of a sport store. It had to be atrezzo for the test, but a functional bike that she could use was a functional bike that she could use. Huffing and puffing, already breaking a sweat, Nanami ran to the post and touched the chain. A page showing the chain drawn in perfect detail fell to the concrete like a rock, slamming into it with a sound and speed one did not generally associate with something so... theoretically light.

There was another sound.

Nanami raised her head and looked through the window of the store. Behind a bunch of gym training machines, something moved. Something large, green, that lunged out at her, crashing through the exercise equipment and then the store window. Shards of glass and large, green armour plates sailed through the air at a girl that only stood 4´6 tall, and wasn´t even standing at that moment. The red visor on the robot stared brightly at her, unfeeling but no less determined as it directed the machine´s lethal appendages toward her.

What came next would not have happened if Nanami had not considered exactly this kind of scenario and trained to deal with it.

The robot was one ton, maybe one ton and a half of steel, plastic and circuits.

So was a family car.

One of the cars Nanami had pocketed slammed the robot back into the store, a broken and non-functional mess, with the car itself not fitting through the window and therefore stopping there, the front down on the ground and the trunk crushed against the top edge of the shop window, the frame somehow vertical and wedged into the window just far enough to stay there.

Nanami found herself on her ass, panting, looking at the devastation in wonder.

The beating of her own heart suddenly reminded her of the photo on her breast pocket, the only thing of value next to it, and she stood up on shaky legs.

"Okay... Okay..." Nanami walked to the car, and transformed it again into paper, wincing as the glass from the store window and that which had shattered off the car fell to the floor. The robot was inside, hunched over against the wall, the visor dull and dark. Nanami smiled even as she wiped the sweat off her forehead with the cuff of her denim jacket. She felt more cheerful now. "Okay!"

Now

A few minutes later, Nanami was pretty proud of herself. She was grinning, her denim jacket now open to reveal a black t-shirt underneath, enjoying the breeze as she rode on. Her little trick had smashed three more robots, and she had really perfected her ability to throw cars, though now she was wondering how people would react if she started doing that on the regular as a hero. Insurance companies would hate her, probably... but there was something more important to worry about.

Everybody else seemed to be doing much better than her. Nanami rode right by a blonde girl resting on a pile of robots she had smashed apart, and realized that she had no idea whether the point of the exam was to reach a total of points, or be above the top-scoring. And... wait, that was a stupid question, wasn´t it? It had to be the latter. It just had to. You couldn´t have the cutting score to the most prestigious hero school in the country be a fixed one. A cold sweat ran down Nanami´s face as she realized she needed to really step it up, and the only way she could think of at the moment was to just ride into the biggest pile of robots she could find.

And that seemed to be in the building in front of her. More than a dozen visors stared out at her from the darkened offices in the first floor. There were a car and a truck parked beside each other, close enough to a lamppost of just the right height, which in turn was just barely within reach of the windows. Nanami leaned forward on the bike, gritted her teeth, and worked her legs like she had never done before in her entire life. She aimed for the car trunk, praying this would work and knowing that even if it did, it was not going to be very enjoyable.

The robots had their own plans. They smashed through the windows, seeing a target approach, and their mechanical voices all buzzed out in a chorus. "Target acquired. Prepare to be destroyed."

By this point, Nanami was too tired to realize that she should really change her plan. Instead, she went right ahead with it. The robots slammed down on the truck, crushing the top, while the lamppost zigzagged as one of them hit it with its arm as it came down. Nanami pulled on the bike´s handles, and the front wheel left the ground entirely. The bike went almost vertical, and then it hit the car. The robots were just a meter away when the back wheel hit the car and the bike spun forwards, the front wheel coming down fast and hitting the top of the car. Nanami was not glued to it, though, she was small and light, and the spinning of the bicycle added to her momentum.

She screamed as she went flying much higher and faster than she had thought possible. The robots reached for her. Bullets and mini-missiles streaked past, and that really made her redouble her screaming, too out of her mind to consider the possibility that those munitions could not be real. One of the robots´s arms almost hit her face, but the girl managed to interpose her hand in its way, and more out of panic than because it was a trained reaction, transformed the robot. Nanami held onto the piece of paper because it was the only thing she could hold onto as she sailed through the air, went through the windows, and slammed her back against a desk that was dragged by her momentum into the next three desks.

She was winded, half-dead, and a total mess. But the pain in her back, arms and legs told Nanami that she was still somewhat alive.

And then everything began to shake.

The building on the other side of the street began to move. Pieces of masonry rained everywhere, and the offices she found herself in threatened to come apart.

"Give me a breeeeeeak!" Nanami cried out, hurting and tired, as she dragged herself onto her hands and knees, and crawled comically quickly towards the windows facing the moving building. Her other option was the robots, and the robots seemed more fearsome to her than whatever this threat was. Of course she was wrong about that, but the instincts of a person not at her most rational moment can be terribly mistaken. Nanami took a glance outside, and proved that horribly, horribly right.

A laser dot appeared right on her forehead, coming from the glass face of a massive robot decked out in heavy munitions of all kinds. When it fired, a dense cloud of white and grey smoke enveloped it. For a moment, a ring of fire shone through the smoke, and Nanami had no idea what it was. She just stared dumbly at the pretty, mysterious light until a missile almost as big as the girl herself flew through the smoke, headed directly for the bright spot on her forehead. Nanami shrieked, jumping up and backwards, falling on her ass again, then skittering back and away from the huge projectile. She hit her back against the desk that stopped her flight into the office space, and then the missile was inside as well. Her shriek went several notes up as she stretched both hands towards the missile in a childish attempt to protect herself. A dense cloud of smoke followed the steel projectile into the office, pulled in by the missile itself, and swept over everything inside, including Nanami.

There was no explosion.

Instead, after the smoke dissipated some seconds later, Nanami walked out to the edge of the office, a crumpled ball of paper falling from her hand. It depicted a smoking missile in flight. As for Nanami herself, she was covered in dust and smoke particles from head to toes, which made her look grainy and just plain strange, more like a cross between a ladybug and a dalmatian than a human being. She fell to her knees, her butt touching the ground between her feet, and registered absolutely nothing as she looked up at the robot with dead eyes, watching it continue its attack on the other students. She didn´t even hear the announcement about the end of the test.

Kyle/Boogeyman

As Kyle finally made it to the exit after dipping and diving through alleyways. He didn't make it unscathed after a robot introduced his fist to Kyle's left leg. He fell to his knees from exhaustion as his beast was levitated next to him. Kyle looked over not being able to show emotion due to the pain and being tired as hell.

As the beast seemingly unfroze it let out a cry and tried dragging itself across the floor."No...need...more..." The beast stuffererd out as Kyle's watch alarm went off and the beast collapsed seemingly dying.

As the beast panted and looked around Kyle limped over and sat next to it."Alright B time to rest up buddy..."

Then suddenly the beast let out one last painful cry and died. The body then slowly turned to shadow and sinked back into Kyle's shadow disappearing. Kyle then pulled himself up and began limping to the final stretch."Things don't always go as planned.

While the robot thrashed Haruka had reached its upper head, having been slamming her fist into the visor like face spawning various dents and cracks though nothing that appeared to slow it down much, the automation seeming to ignore her entirely as it prepares to throw a blow down into the street below but the entire process giving her an idea. Leaving several thick threads of residue on the creature's head obscuring a good portion of its face she leaps off the fist as it's pulled back attaching the other end of the material to its fist. As the blow is thrown the elasticity was stretched to its limit slowing down the strike slightly enough for the group below to luckily block it, but that wasn't why she did it, what goes down must come up after all, especially when there was a highly taught material to aid its effort. This would likely be enough to do the damage she wanted, but she wasn't about to do things by half, another line of material to its leg and fist should be the icing on the cake before jumping off safely from the express trip down to the ground.

Once she was closer to the ground however she noticed a girl on her rear not far away from the fists impact, leaping off to yank her by the collar as to not get crushed by the metal appendage "You might want to watch out for that thing, incoming blows kinda have the right of way on this road" taking note of the weird paper of a missile, she was about to make a comment about this not being the place for drawing when the girl had explained just what it was. A flash of inspiration has her snatch the paper and stick it to the fist just as it was rising back up, there was no harm in an added boom to the bash but she had little time to further dwell on it.

The end results if successful would be a rebounded fist straight into the robot's fist to smash its own face from the first set of threads, knocking it off balance to stagger along with an explosion of its own missiles as the second set yanked at its leg at the same time sending it tumbling down. In either case, it was time to leave to make the way to the entrance, the area looked wrecked especially if the giant machine had fallen down and shaken the area though from what she could tell the rest of the students had long since left the path giving her a clear path towards the exit area. There may have been some in the other areas but all he could see herself was the previously wrecked normal robots and rubble so it was time to see how she had faired. Sure she might not have gotten points from the giant one but that was a matter of principle.

Now she could leave the paper girl where she was but given the test about to close she might as well give them a hand, going to drag them along as she goes to slingshot them down the path, over the wreckage, and towards the exit area.

Mugen had continued with a carefree expression already thinking about how he'd take out the boy's monster . . . Then the announcement rang out about the exam is over.
"Aww man and this was just about to get interesting," He started to complain loudly as if he wasn't just screaming bloody murder just a few minutes ago. He cupped his hands around his mouth jokingly "booo" ing at the announcement. He turned back to face the kid laughing, "Looks like you've been saved by the bell this time--"

His carefree stance froze, hearing the beast behind him. Mugen smiled nervously, slowly looking over his shoulder and finally let himself breath once more when he saw it was contained. He would have taunted the slacker but he wanted to get his bearings together. Mugen didn't realize how long he had been standing there because by the time he shook himself out of his own thoughts, the beast was gone and the boy was limping away.

"Hmm, why are you so exhausted? It's not like you did anything." Mugen hummed as he skipped over to him with his hands back in his pockets. "Come on, they're not giving out sympathy points." His eyebrows furrowed, looking the boy up and down while walking backward slightly ahead of him. A thought drifted in his mind that maybe he shouldn't be so harsh towards him since he didn't understand how the boy's quirk worked . . . Then he remembered how much points the beast was racking up for him and didn't feel that bad for his limp.

Yesterday

Taking the slightest glance around the room, the only question that came to mind was "Why the hell am I here?"

The gleam in his eyes taking a more emotionless hue, as if "something" were eating away at his emotions

Every murmur in the room echoed in his ears with an otherworldly clarity. It was unbearable, painful, maddening; an incessant rumble turning into a sickened orchestra of minuscule icy skates running through his eardrums. Thing is, he could not avoid hearing it. They were talking about him.

The peril he'd gotten himself into was unknown even for him, but that familiar sensation of people looking down on him was still very much present. He wondered what those gazes that burned on the back of his neck were seeing, what that sense of nausea setting in when imagining what they were mumbling about meant; but he had to try and not click his tongue in disgust and keep his composure.

There was a certain stake at risk here. But what was it?

Proving everyone wrong, of course. The questions on the sheet of paper in his hands were answered effortlessly for a reason. He knew that somehow he needed to appease the flame that burned wildly within him ever since the quirk landed on him, to quiet down that voice in his head speaking nonsense about a world beyond what his eyes could see. In order to fully squander that latent potential of his, he went on a quest to amass every bit of knowledge he could get his mitts on. And as he looked at the answers seemingly written by a professional, Hiroshi understood just how much that sudden outburst had paid off; but still, nothing could spark that light in his heart.
Everything felt meaningless, all that effort just to answer a couple of questions?

No matter how much he knew about the ins and outs of everything, it just wasn't enough to get his enthusiasm running.

An exasperated sigh was his response for this tiresome dilemma.

Today

As Hiroshi stood there, among one of the alleyways of the city ruins, hearing the thundering roar of explosions far in the distance, his gaze drifting across the shiny surface of the dozen of steel giants cornering him; he realized he might've just crossed that finite silver lining between ignorance and bravery.

"So they really are trying to kill me, huh?" He spoke to no-one in particular; shooting a faint gaze at the blood coated arm that limped by his side. Even face to face with the clutching jaws of an imminent death, Hiroshi still held that characteristic apathy of his. He'd already expected something like this, every single soul on this earth had warned him about it. But even with all the tragedy ridden stories of kids getting severely injured in U.A's relentless practical exams; it wasn't even that surprising, not enough to strike a chord in his spirit.

But he had to give credit where credit is due, even if he could read the robots' movements like an open book, they gave back double the hit whenever Hiroshi saw an opening. It became more of a test of endurance from the first punch he threw to one of them. Sure, their attacks were much capable of sending him flying to the nearest wall if he didn't root himself to the ground and took the hit properly, but not a fraction of them were as impressive as they seemed. All he had to do was keep hitting them in the joints until they inevitably fell apart; then again, his limbs were already giving into the numbness.

"Man, this would be the perfect moment for my theme song to kick in..." He cynically grimaced, falling to one knee as one the robots came closer to him, its figure blocking the sun. Thinking about the perfect quip wouldn't get him out of this situation, and he certainly couldn't talk them to death. Being at the mercy of a soulless machine designed to beat up angsty teens, he couldn't help but chuckle at the sight of the robot raising a fist in front of him; as if it were about to execute him.

It was almost poetic. As always, he'd worked so hard to achieve something, only to be immediately reminded of the gigantic gap between him and everybody else. He could feel that frustrating word arising in the back of his mind. "Weak"

It kept repeating nonstop, almost as if demanding something from Hiroshi.

"How the hell am I supposed to fight back?" The more he thought about it, the more his eyes began watering as the fist coming down like a hammer inched closer to his face. The moment the impact landed on his guard, a Hiroshi-shaped hole appear on the soil below him; the titanic force behind every hit booming on his arms. He'd been covering his limbs with a thick layer of blood to not break his fists against the unbreakable armor the robots carried, but even that combined with his martial arts weren't going to wound up as anything but a minor nuisance to them; but it sure as hell would keep him from being smashed into a bloody pulp for the time being.

The robot kept striking Hiroshi, until the loud thud of a mechanical limb hitting hard against the ground was heard, right as the thought flashed in Hiroshi's mind. The countless sparks that flew from the spot where a menacing piece of metal once was, lit up the scenery for a bloody carnage. Hiroshi stood motionless, looking at the now static wave of sharp crimson floating midair.

Instead of tears overflowing from Hiroshi's eyes, there was blood, rivers of blood to be more specific. "That one was long overdue." He exclaimed with a sigh of relief, lightly punching his own forehead for not coming up with such an easy counter to the robots overwhelming raw power. A true battle hardened combatant usually has a knack for developing as a better warrior when cornered, and Hiroshi wouldn't be taking his martial arts to the grave with him just because his ego got in the way. Not today.

If foreboding fists and getting lured into his quirk's painful embrace was necessary to get at least one step closer to achieving something significant, then he would be more than gladly inclined to not even bat an eye for it. Liabilities such as pride wouldn't get him far in this world.

"Well, that's just life. No hard feelings, right?" He said with a sly grin as he looked at the robot quavering at the loss of its arm, then brought back the blade into his hands, easily splitting it in half as if it'd been but a mere automated chunk of butter all along.

"I'll take that as a 'yes'. Anyways, don't you bastards think we should keep going? Night's young, and this party's just getting started!" Hiroshi stated with ire dancing in his eyes, laughing maniacally at the empowering feeling coursing through his veins.

Before the robots could move ahead to confront Hiroshi, their front row had already been torn apart with one swift red flash. Soon after, the others met the same fate; all of them stacking up into a messy amalgam of scrap, oil and wires. At the top of this pile of junk stood a man wreaking the stench of blood, intoxicated with newfound strength, smiling like it was the best day of his life.

"It's not as easy as you would think controlling him..." Kyle said noticing the boy clearly didn't like the fact he wasn't physically fighting. "B has the mentality and brain capacity of a child...A very big, violent, and sadistic child...but a child either way. He's a friend, but boy he can be a pain in my arse." He then started trying to walk normally. An emphasis on trying cause it still looked awkward."Look I didn't ask to be born with B attached to my shadow and I definitely didn't ask to be a puppet master. I was born weak and I mean look at me. I'm a british punk artist not a traditional hero, but B is a monster and he has to be a hero or else..." He then pointed to a mangled robotic corpse."That's your corpse or some random poor fool of a hero biting off more then he chew. I don't even understand B or my quirk fully. Who says one day he just decides to put his middle finger up and go on a killing spree?" He then looked at his watch before looking back up as his face turned to a annoyed look as he turned to Mugen."So you can sit thier and judge me all you like with a sense of superiority that you do everything by hand. I don't care, but you should remember this. The only reason you can fight is because you were born with a certain quirk and have the privilege to fight. I'm basically a normal human being doing what he can to control a monster and protect people so follow the old saying of "Don't judge someone until you've walked a mile in their shoes" and keep your trapt shut you bloosy twat!" That final sentence he said with anger before ignoring the boys presence.

Even as Kyle realised he was a bit harsh he was just annoyed and didn't mean to get that heated, but what he said was already out so no taking it back.

"Eh?" Mugen raised an eyebrow at the boy as he continued to speak, following along with his words and pointing to the mangled robot. His hands balled into a fist from inside his pocket, starting to boil in frustration at his statement about only being able to fight due to his quirk. Mugen's face twisted in disgust at such a claim and was ready to tear Kyle a new one until he spat out about him being a twat.

With his focus being shaken, Mugen nearly stumbled backward in his reversal pace. He froze in place to steady himself, still kind of in shock by Kyle's outwardly anger. A lot different from the feeble appearance he first saw him with. He listened to the boy limp onwards, shifting his eyes away when he turned to face forward and quickened his step. Although Mugen still didn't really believe the mental strain to be equal to the physical strain he kept his mouth shut about his doubts and went on in silence. Which the other boy seemed to be bent on doing, ignoring his presence.

Eventually, he sighed growing ever so bored with the silence. "What exactly is your definition of a normal human? With how our world is, having three eyes could be normal." He scoffed and boldly grabbed at the taller boy to forcibly have Kyle use himself as support for his limp. "Yeah, yeah whatever you say. Still, as wrong as you are heroes don't stagger in their step. Traditional or not." Mugen tightened his grip to reaffirm that Kyle was going to accept his help whether he wanted to or not . . . Then again maybe being so forceful wasn't the best way to help someone?

Despite keeping his head forward with an apathetic expression in place, Mugen was actually deep in thought about the boy. Well, of course, Mugen understood better than anyone that some people were just born better than others but surely being born with a monster you had to babysit was better than being born with nothing at all. As troublesome as babysitting such a thing was, it had a lot of raw power that would outmatch someone who trained their whole lives and the fact he even had some control over it made him more than whatever Kyle considered being a 'normal human'.

Kyle begrudgingly accept Mugen's help cause he didn't really have a choice in this situation, but he was thinking over what Mugen said just like him."The best I can do is at least answer your question. By normal I mean old school human before quirks. B is the reason I can't do what I want. I want to make music like the Sex Pistols or write horror novels back in the UK not going to a hero academy..." He then paused and kept thinking for a little longer."Unlike you I don't like having a quirk, but since it was forced upon me I can't be selfish and wait for B to decide he wants to be a villian..."

Kyle without saying it directly would have rather been quirkless. Even if that meant ridicule from others it would be better cause he could do what he wanted and be a rebel like any other punk kid.
