Plot​

​

You were sent to Merrifield Psychiatric Hospital with the hope that they would make you better, and cure you of your mental disorder. A few of the patients at Merrifield are there because they really are mentally ill, but most of you are not. ​

​

On February 4th, 2018, the Global Child Protection Act was signed into law. Initially, the law was created to appease the vocal minority of parents calling on the government to do something to ensure their children's safety. After the law was fully implemented in January of 2019, the age to be considered a legal adult was moved up to 21, and no teenager was allowed to apply for a driver's permit or work at any establishment until they reached the minimum age of 18. While the GCPA limited the freedom of children and teenager's everywhere, it wasn't until Amendment 16 was introduced that the darker side of GCPA was fully realized. ​

Under Amendment 16, "rebellious, disrespectful, or insubordinate behavior by persons under the age of 21" could be legally classified under the banner of mental illness if a parent saw fit to do so. If a parent were to present the ill child to a mental health facility, they would be detained there until further examination by a doctor labeled the type of mental illness they had and a recovery regiment was established. This amendment could not only be used by parents whose teenagers acted out in ways they didn't understand, but also as a way to detain delinquents, runaways, and anyone else who didn't play by societies rules.​

After Amendment 16 passed in 50% of first-world countries, mental health facilities began to spring up all over as more and more teenagers were driven and taken in by psychiatric hospitals for evaluation. By 2028, this was seen as normal, and even beneficial to making society a better place. Merrifield Psychiatric Hospital was first built in 2025, but wouldn't open it's doors until 2029 after the founder, Val Merrifield, passed away. ​

Merrifield became the first psychiatric hospital to refuse visits to their patients, and also one of the first to have guards patrolling the perimeter armed with tranquilizer guns. It was almost a weekly occurrence to hear about an escape attempt from some other facility. But not Merrifield. Very few who are admitted to Merrifield come back out as reformed, acceptable adults.​

This RP takes place in Alternate Earth, in a society that has gone to the extremes to keep their children safe from danger/kidnappers/exploitation. And in doing so, another extreme was introduced. At first, Amendment 16 was only used by negligent parents, those who never wanted their kids anyway, or people who say homeless kids cluttering the streets and had someone else clean them up. ​

Then, it got out of control. Overly concerned/helicopter parents started seeing every single change in their children as signs of a mental illness. Then the media blew up the issue ("10 Signs Your Son Or Daughter MIght Have A Mental Disorder", for example) and it spread to regular parents, thinking they were doing best for their children. By 2029 in all countries that have passed Amendment 16, over 60 percent of the population under 21 is in a mental health facility. ​
