Fantasy Merfolk???

I don't even remember the last time, not really anyway... Have we role played together before? I feel like a dick, I remember everyone who I have ever roleplayed with, but not you.
Well, maybe you'll remember that I played the queen in your last Mermaid rp
Oh my god, I remember now [emoji23]
Maybe the mermaids are under threat of being discovered by scientists.

Maybe we can throw in some Atlantian lore, or create our own?

What kind of abilities would the merfolk have, (i.e. would we be able to breathe above water? Shapeshift(Fishy tail to human legs)? Siren-like abilities?)

No shapeshifting, breathing above water is a yes, maybe siren stuff idk

I was thinking maybe there could be a power plant that moved in close to them and it's ruining the ecosystem or maybe mutating the fish or making the merfolk sick or something like that

Can I vote no for the ability to turn their fins into legs? It'd make for more of a challenge I think :) But that's also fine if you don't want that. I'm really up for anything you decide :) !

Challenges are fun! Besides, if merfolk could shapeshift then the little mermaid wouldn't have had to go through all that agonizing pain every time she took a step, or had to make a deal with the sea witch at all, she coulda just walked up to the prince and been like "yo dude I'm that chick who saved your life I'm also a mermaid princess btw js anyway heard you wanted to marry me?"

Hahaha, yaaas :) I totally agree!!

I'm so in. Summer is here, my house is blazing hot and I wanna swim, so here's to pretending I'm swimming.

Oh! Idea: Perhaps the threat of discovery is so imminent that some merpeople decide to leave their society to try and find a better, more secluded place?

Maybe in doing so they inadvertently get seen? Or maybe they meet some humans determined to protect the merpeople?

And then, is this the ocean or the Great Lakes? Cuz I could easily imagine menfolk in either, and there's an awful lot of salt in the ocean for something half-human.

I like this idea... As for where they are, I haven't decided yet, but I was thinking there could be different types of merfolk for different environments. Deep Sea merfolk have bio-luminescence and find it difficult to breath air. Fresh Water have more earthy colors for camouflage, while Coral Reef merfolk have bright, exciting colors. River merfolk are smaller and faster, etc.
