"Kaiju Enthusiast"
It is the year 2074 AD.
For nearly two centuries, mankind has had to live with the sudden rise of giant monsters emerging from the depths of the Earth. These ancient beings, known as kaiju, came from the depths of the "Hollow Earth" - an ancient subterranean ecosystem deep within the Earth - to reclaim dominion over the surface realm after a 5,000 year dormancy. For many individuals, they sought peaceful refuge upstairs from the hostile overcrowding eden below; while others sought for violent conquest and domination to establish a new brutal dynasty. Whichever their goals, their arrival had caused a rude awakening for humanity; being thrusted into a new war of terrifyingly titanic proportions.
Forced to act together, humanity was quick to establish the Kaiju Defense Network (KDN), a specialized defense force responsible for protecting humanity against their new enormous neighbors. Originally acting as a branch of the UN to document and contain kaiju, the KDN has evolved to become the primary bulwark of mankind by creating giant mechs and powerful "state-of-the-art" weapons and gear to sport a fair and fighting chance against their enemy. They fought furiously on both fronts, both when defending cities and when going on the offensive in campaigns to quell the kaiju population. Their efforts had saved the lives of countless people and saved over millions in damages over the course of their service.
But as the never-ending war continued, by 2036, the two sides had eventually reached a stalemate in what would be called "The Great War". No matter what either side did, they would find themselves unable to completely eradicate each other. Most kaiju would become disinterested with humanity and strive to live in piece on the most remote of islands and landmasses; while mankind continued to fortify and prepare for the next great offensive. By the time the lines were drawn once more, the cataclysmic devastation and terraforming on Earth done in their wake was immeasurable. Cities would find themselves completely, or partially, flattened while global warming and nuclear fallout forced both the destruction and creation of unique ecosystems around the world. Human factions would begin popping up randomly across the world, usually as secret organizations rivaling the KDN in tech and acting as local defenders of their factions.
During this uneasy peace between the two sides, humanity became interested in learning more about the many secrets and mysteries of the kaiju species, both on a biological and ecological level. The KDN's eventual discovery of the "Hollow Earth" have caused a major spike of interest and they have since been working on establishing research bases to study their subterranean reality. On the other hand, various crime organizations had been collecting and harvesting kaiju blood, bones and organs to be sold on the black market. It's not uncommon for these kaiju to be put on display and sold, either to engage in brutal cage fights or for other illegal purposes. However, some people wanted to see if both sides could truly coexist without the use of violence and hostility and use the knowledge they learn to make this a reality, ranging from passionate activists to stoic and maniac cults.
The kaiju would find solace by their lonesomes, with some veterans of the Great War establishing tribes. They teach the ways of their ancestors to those in their tribe, passing down valuable knowledge and lore in the process. Eventually, some of these tribes would grow to become massive kingdoms encompassing a whole variety of kaiju united under a single ruler. Many would often fight themselves over various reasons, ranging from acquiring territories to ideologies. Yet while many vengeful individuals still intend to cause trouble towards the humans, some kaiju would find common ground with the human activists chanting for their protection. Thus, certain kaiju would take the mantle as guardians of Earth, restoring balance to the damaged world whenever possible. Still, while skirmishes often take place between the two sides, neither were quite yet able or willing to go through another major war and risk eradicating more of their fragile planet... (yet anyways).
And good thing too. For as Earth entered a new uncertain age, they were blissfully unaware that they were being watched by prying eyes from within the cosmic void of space; studying their blue planet with ominous intent while silently making their next move...

Hello there!
If you're interested in an open-world DND-inspired RP within a tokusatsu-fantasy hybrid setting - playing as a pilot manning a giant mech or a kaiju wrecking havoc on humanity - then this might be the RP for you! This RP takes inspiration from various kaiju media ranging from the classic Godzilla, Gamera, and Ultraman franchises to the western media of Pacific Rim and Monsterverse series, as well as lesser known media such as the video games such as "Dawn of the Monsters" and the manga "Kaiju No. 8" in regards to what is presented in this world. There is plenty of flexibility in terms of creating and building your characters, all within a simple yet detailed character sheet loosely inspired by DND and other RPs here on RPN like "Isekai Hell". If you're familiar with how things run with the latter RP, it's pretty similar here.
To keep things engaging and interesting, you won't start out with the strongest mech or kaiju; rather you can build a starting character and build upon it as you complete various "missions" and longer Gm-moderated "campaigns" to earn points. Missions can be started by any player wishing to be the host of that RP (so long as it's approved by the GM) and having an available group of other fellow players; comprising typically of KDF-only, Kaiju-only, or mixed-parties (kaiju and KDF) depending on what the plot of said mission is.
As for what missions you can do? There's a surprising amount of unique missions one can partake in! You can still fit in standard-based DND-like quests into this RP, provided they fit the lore and scale of the RP. You could, for instance:
- Have a mech squadron team up against a rampaging kaiju(s) in a city
- Have a Defense Guard troop defend a base against minor kaiju; perhaps having them breach into the base at one point
- Have two kaiju characters duel on a remote island for territory or leader of a tribe/high-powered.
- Send a mech squadron to fetch a unique resource in the depths of the Hollow Earth, with an allied kaiju serving as a guide.
- Have a kaiju come across an ancient "dungeon", prompting an investigation; may be rewarded with an ancient weapon or blessed with a new power by the "gods".
- Have a mech squadron escort a fleet of battleships and Aircraft Carriers carrying important cargo through kaiju infested waters.
- Rescue civilians stuck in a burning kaiju-infested building; incorporating stealth-elements if human characters enter the building themselves. A joint mission between giant mechs fighting off kaiju while Defense Guard Soldiers retrieve the targets within.
- Clean out the aftermath of a kaiju invasion as part of the "Sweepers".
- Have a team of newly recruited Defense Guard soldiers accomplish the examination test before becoming officially accepted (great for beginners!).
- Have a massive KDF-Kaiju collaboration to fight off a massive alien invasion force (great as a final boss for a campaign!).
- And more!
Once the players finish a "mission" or portion of a "campaign", let Develius or any moderator to grade that RP and assign points to each character based on their performance and accomplishments. Hosts get a 50% increase in points. Anyone failing the RP or rules of the RP will be subject to point penalties, or no points in extreme situations.
Dice isn't a required method to play the game, although useful in certain aspects. If you'd like to have a more "diced-oriented" game to your "mission" or "campaign", feel fee to utilize it as much as you desire.
Of course, there's gonna be a few ground rules when moving forward (more to come if/when needed):
1). No meta-gaming, auto-hitting, or anything that diminishes the player experience.
2). I would like at least semi-literate players that can post an average of 2 good paragraphs. By all means we're not asking for you to write a novel, but give a good amount of detail and engagement/entertainment to your posts. No one - two sentence posts. (Due to personal experiences, I'll be barring those that I feel lack these requirements from participating for quality insurances).
3). When creating characters - whether they're mech or kaiju oriented - avoid making clones of existing kaiju characters (IE: No Godzilla-Clones, MechaGodzilla-clones, Ghidorah-clones, etc). Nothing's wrong with utilizing a bit of inspiration and concepts from certain aspects of those characters, just don't make your characters carbon/near-carbon copies of popular existing characters.
4). Minimum of 1 post per week, as a means to keep the stories from stalling/ghosting, but feel free to post more id needed. Hosts of RPs need to make sure they can see a mission seen to the end. If you feel like you're unable to commit to that schedule, need additional time for any reason, or need to drop the RP ,do let me or other mods know; everyone knows that life can be hard at times so no hard feelings.
5). When making a RP, be sure to include in the title [Mechs N' Monsters] to identify its relation to here. IE: [Mechs N' Monsters] Trouble In Tokyo
6). Each character may only partake in 1 mission at a time. Once that RP mission is done, or their role is finished in said mission prior to ending, may they partake in another. Longer campaigns can allow for a character to partake in an extra mission or two in certain situations, but not partake in a second campaign unless otherwise specified by the GM/Mods.
7). This RP will be no stranger to death and depending on what "Mission" or "Campaign" you play, the stakes may be higher than usual. Ultimately, you are primarily in charge of when and how this happens, but nonetheless your character dying and/or suffering critical injuries (IE: lost of limbs) are a possibility. Contact the GM or moderators for more info or if you plan on killing off or drastically harming your character(s).
8). If you would like to add to the world - whether it be by adding additional factions, significant lore-pieces, locations, etc - please let them go by the GMs and Moderators first for approval.
9). If you have any further questions or suggestions to add, feel free to ask the GM.
10). And the most important rule... Have fun!
(If you'd like to know more information about the lore of "Mechs N Monsters" or want to know what a character sheet may look like, feel free to browse through the tabs for more information and wait for further updates in the future).
Originally formed in 1949 by the United Nations as a secret organization to study and hide the existence of the emerging kaiju, the start of the "Great War" in 1993 forced the KFN to announce their presence to the public and don the mantle as the ultimate protectors of humanity. With access to the most secretive "state-of-the-art" technology at their disposal, the network was quick to develop counter measures to defend and fight back against the hostile kaiju. They were the first to approve and build the first mecha units under "Operation: Iron Giant" by the turn of the next century, proving to be a massive success and giving humanity a solid chance to fight back against the giant monstrosities.
By the 2030s, they've had multiple KDF headquarters around the world, each serving as a branch that collaborated with the local country's military utilizing different tactics and unique weaponry. Propoganda was spread across the world, asking the public to support their ventures in exchange for protection and jobs in constructing mechs and enlisting in the KDF as either soldiers of the Kaiju Defense Guard or enlist as pilots for the giant mechs. Massive "Bulwarks" and turrets were built around the cities where the KDF operated, with older models comprising of massive steel-walls slowly being replaced by more efficient and aesthetically pleasant "plasma shields" by the late 2040s. This same technology was also used to create giant containment facilities to keep any slumbering kaiju from causing havoc on the world.
Despite both sides ending the "Great War" in 2036 via stalemate, the KDN took the opportunity to cease the peace granted to them and reinforce their defenses tenfold. Yet as they did, they also began an intense scientific research campaign into understanding the kaiju - from their biology to where they came from. They also provided relief and repairs to cities affected by the war through the creation of the "Global Restoration and Damage Control Initiative (GRDC)", and the "Kaiju Bio Sweepers Group (KBSG)" to cleanup the corpses and biological matter left in their wake. Once discovering the secret realm of the "Hollow Earth" thousands of miles underneath the Earth surface, the KDF also established research posts to study their new neighbors and take advantage of any new and useful natural resources within. Some kaiju have even allied themselves with the KDF, through shared terms and agreements benefiting both parties.
List of the KDF's various departments and divisions:
- Kaiju Defense Force [KDF Mecha Academy "Mechacdemy"] - The first and main line of defense against kaiju through the use of giant mechas and other defensive weaponry.

- Kaiju Ally 4orce [(KA4) Allied Kaiju Unit] - A recent venture that works alongside "allied/friendly" kaiju fighting on the behest of humanity.
- Kaiju Containment Department [(KCD) Containment] - Department specializing in containing both active and dormant hostile kaiju.
- TITAN Sciences Division [Kaiju Science Division] - Primary biological and geological science division for the KDN.
- ANCHOR ARMORAGE Inc [(AAI) - Robotics/Tech Research] - Primary department of mechanical research and technology development for the KDN.
- IKARI ADVANCED CYBERNETICS Inc [IAC - Cybernetics Research] - Secretive department of advanced cybernetic research and capabilities.
- Global Restoration and Damage Control Initiative [(GRDC) - Repair] - Organization specialized in rebuilding and fixing city infrastructure and services and providing humanitarian aid.

Coming in all manners of different sizes and shapes, the kaiju are one of the most powerful and diverse species on the planet. These ancient creatures have existed long before man first evolved, having originated from the "Hollow Earth" - an ancient subterranean ecosystem deep within the Earth's mantle. Tentatively, those that first choose to live on the surface are either looking for fresh territory and resources or had been outcasted by the higher powers lurking deep beneath. Most of them had been laying dormant for the past 5,000 years due to unknown circumstances, being mostly forgotten by both human and kaiju alike; only recently rising due to the sudden spike in radiation on the surface and intense conflicts from within the Hollow Earth. Since then, the surface faction had grown to dominate the majority of the Earth, being only kept from total domination by the Kaiju Defense Network.
The creation of new species kaiju of any size depends on a variety of factors. Intense concentrations of radiation is considered a primary trigger for certain fauna sporting a special "trigger protein" within their DNA, causing rapid growth in size and activating certain physical attributes and abilities. Old magics are sometimes practiced by those within the Hollow Earth, either being taught or inherited by their predecessors or mentors - with necromantic and summoning magic typically capable in summoning "minor-class" kaiju minions to do their bidding.
While looking like mindless brutes from afar, many kaiju are indeed capable in complex thought and speech towards each other. In rare instances, they can even communicate with people; allowing some to join or align themselves with humanity as allies of the KDN. Many have also established tribes to promote common ideals and for protection, with some evolving into massive kingdoms with a monarchial hierarchy, not unlike that of Medieval Europe, being seen with the various ranks. Those with higher ranks have higher standings within the kingdom, as well as having vast expanses territory of their own; controlling whatever come through and whichever are to be killed on sight or driven away. It's this that prompted the KDN to make a "Ranking Sheet" that documents and classifies each kaiju according to their strengths and ranking; allowing better and more direct communication regarding the immediate threat at hand.
Ranking Chart - The KDN utilizes a ranking chart to classify the overall size, danger, and potential influence a kaiju wields at its disposal; as well as information gathered by observations and through KDF forces. While these ranks may apply to certain individuals under the Kaiju "Monarchy System”, the KDF’s system primarily focuses on the size and physical capabilities of the individual in question. This list explains both.
- [Minor-Class = (Tier I) Warrior, (Tier II) Knight, (Tier III) Lord/Generals]
- Size Range: 1 - 25 Meters
- Description: (Think Kaiju No 8 and classic "minion" monsters)
- - Tier I (1 - 5 Meters): Warriors are typically the smallest and weakest units. Typically human-sized individuals have one or no specialized abilities. Numerous and mindless in nature; used as minion fodder. Usually easy to eliminate through most casual guns and weaponry.
- - Tier II (6 - 15 Meters): Knights are bigger and more specialized warriors that can hold their own for a good period of time. Typically serve a niche in the minor force; either as air support, tanks, stealth, etc. Typically requires Defense Guard-grade weapons to take down.
- - Tier III (16 - 25 Meters): Lords/Generals are the highest ranking minor units; usually commanding warriors and knights on the battlefield. Utilize unique abilities that make them a difficult challenge for the Defense Guard to eliminate; requiring a whole platoon or a lone High-rank/S-Class Guards to take down. A light mech or two are more than enough to deal with them
- [Major-Class = (Tier IV) Baron, (Tier V) Viscount, (Tier VI) Earl/Count]
- Size Range: 26 - 99 Meters
- Description: (Think Classic Tokusatsu Kaiju/Pacific Rim)
- - Tier IV (26 - 49 Meters): Barons are the most numerous of the major-class kaiju; with some being the direct evolution of minor-class Tier III kaiju. They serve either as direct overseers for the minor-class kaiju, gaining small swabs of territory acknowledged by higher ranked kaiju, or are abolscent kaiju wandering by their lonesome. When serving under authority, they tend to act as the main units for a major offensive - usually a group of 4 or more - using their strength or numerous minions to overwhelm cities. Too strong for even the strongest Guards to manage alone, Mechs are thus given the task in defeating them; usually requiring 2 - 3 small mechs or a single medium or large variant.
- - Tier V (50 Meters - 75 Meters): Viscounts are typically major-class kaiju who have recently achieved adulthood; allowing the opportunity to gain territory for themselves so long as they have the power to keep it. Any noticeably powerful/promising individuals can also be taken under the wing of a Tier VI “Earl/Count” as an apprentice and/or enforcer for any local barons. Typically seen acting alone when attacking cities or alongside other Tier Vs or with their Tier VI masters. At least one medium mech is required for taking on a Tier V, if not multiple.
- - Tier VI (76 - 99 Meters): Earls/Counts are the highest ranking major-class kaiju. Typically the result of powerful and/or charismatic “Tier Vs” uniting/conquering territory from other kaiju or having conquered large human cities and fortresses by themselves. They report directly to Dukes but are trusted with enough autonomy to manage their territory and initiate campaigns. Can recruit Tier IV and Tier V kaiju and have them work under it. Requires multiple medium mechs or at least one large mech to successfully take down.
- [Royal-Class = (Tier VII) Marquess, (Tier VIII) Duke, (Tier IX) Prince]
- Size Range: 100 - 199 Meters
- Description: (Think Classic Tokusatsu Kaiju but larger and having more powerful abilities)
- - Tier VII (100 - 149 Meters): Marquess were primarily defensive kaiju that protected the borderlands of a king’s territory. Typically these individuals keep to themselves, yet are extremely hostile whenever opponents breach their territory. May go on the offensive if ordered to acquire more unclaimed territory by higher-ups. A large mech or two are recommended to engage; with more ensuring victory.
- - Tier VIII (150 - 199 Meters): Dukes are powerful kaiju that rule over vast provinces and are the direct superiors to counts. It’s the highest peer-rank any kaiju under monarchy may acquire under a King/Queen Usually the rank is given to any kaiju related to the Monarch or highly loyal to it. Despite their loyalty, a syndicate group between various “grand” dukes of differing kingdoms allows them to secretly communicate their issues and strive to one day become the next monarch of their respective kingdoms. It’s what led many individuals in the know to believe that they truly run the kaiju empires. Multiple Large mechs are required to engage one successfully.
- - Tier IX (1 - 199 Meters): Princes/Princess’ is seen as a controversial tier, typically representing the direct offspring of a Superior Class kaiju, usually a King/Queen, or any kaiju next in line to the royal throne regardless of blood relation*. They can be of any height below 200 meters.
- [Superior-Class = (Tier X) King/Queen "Monarch", (Tier XI) Emperor/Empress, (Tier XII) God/Goddess]
- Size Range: 200+ Meters (?)
- Description: (Most Powerful; Tokusatsu+ some leaning towards Lovecraftian Territory)
- - Tier X (200 Meters+): Currently the most powerful kaiju rank the KDF has officially applied to. There’s a total of four kaiju of the surface world that are officially recognized as true “monarchs” - known via codenames simply as: King of the Land, Queen of the Sky, Queen of the Sea, and King of the Subterranean. (Note: Any kaiju bearing the title of “King” or "Queen" aside from the recognized 4 are NOT true Kings/Queens. These titles are typically given as pompous nicknames or of reverence by lesser beings). These true kings and queens are normally dormant, communicating through their subjects telepathically as they rest in their respected lands. Yet when their kingdoms are in great peril, they rise from their slumber and enact vengeance on those who dare disturb them. Each of the four have a unique artifact or weapon that acts as a catalyst for their immense power, which would be inherited to the next monarch if they take the mantle. While only 4 kings are currently known from the surface, more unidentified kings can be found within the Hollow Earth; being much more active and much more destructive. If any was to attack a human settlement, all hands on deck are needed to stand a chance against the ultimate threat to humanity.
- - Tier XI (250 Meters+ ?): Currently, no Emperor/Empress kaiju exist on the surface world - although ruins and pictographs have confirmed that such kaiju existed tens of thousands of years ago. Yet within the Hollow Earth, certain KDN research groups have found evidence and heard rumors of such kaiju lurking in the deepest depths of the realm; most laying dormant or active through other methods.
- - Tier XII (???): A hypothetical ranking, typically reserved to the original kaiju and the true creators of the kaiju. Legends of old have spoke of a "Pantheon" of these figures, although proof of their true existence is yet unknown. May also theoretically apply to extremely powerful alien kaiju that may lurk within the depths of space~ being strong enough to destroy planets and other godly feats
Note: This KDF certified list is constantly being developed and revised based on current events and discoveries. There will be exceptions to the “guidelines” provided in this chart as more information becomes available.
For example, while most “Tier III” kaiju are bigger than Tier I or Tier II classes, some lesser minor-class individuals may possess - or are capable of achieving - “Tier III” ranks based on their power, influence, and destructive capabilities.
The reverse is also possible; IE: *Tier IX “Princes” usually refer to the biological/adoptive young of a Superior-Class regardless of age and power. They may have the rank, but have the power of a Major, or even Minor-class Kaiju.
While not required/needed for every mission, battle maps like those presented above are a great way to establish the scale and surroundings of where your characters are fighting. The maps created here were made by screenshotting various locations on Google Earth and then painting the grids on top with each spanning 200mX200m. The dots and shapes represent either your characters, enemy units, and locations of interest. Feel free to make your own maps in this style for your own missions!
