I think they're largely all original characters, just done in a way that fits the specific role in question.

Liam's a Salarian for example, and Gil is a Drell this time around. But they're still a soldier and engineer respectively.

As Epiphany said they are a majority original characters who are in a certain role. A few roles do exist to choose from such as Lexi, Vetra, Cora & Jaal if you're interested. Steel Accord or the taking of more then one, if you're interested in multiple roles.
