"THE "Red Death" had long devastated the country. No pestilence had ever been so fatal, or so hideous. Blood was its Avatar and its seal --the redness and the horror of blood. There were sharp pains, and sudden dizziness, and then profuse bleeding at the pores, with dissolution. The scarlet stains upon the body and especially upon the face of the victim, were the pest ban which shut him out from the aid and from the sympathy of his fellow-men. And the whole seizure, progress and termination of the disease, were the incidents of half an hour." -Edgar Allan Poe
When the Red Death first appeared in their kingdom, no one thought that it would spread and things would become as dire as they did. Entire generations were wiped out in the matter of days. The commoner's being most devastated by the plague, since they didn't have large estate to hide away in. After spreading from village to village killing many of those who once provided the country with food, the resulting food shortages quickly caused even more unrest. Neighbors became suspicious and hostile of one another, thinking they either carried the plague or the temptation to steal. Soon people would be killing one another before the plague could.
When the kingdom's monarch, Prince Prospero announces that he would host a masquerade, thus providing a safe haven for the aristocrats, they begin flocking to his castle. They believed they were leaving their worries behind and that nothing but joyous festivities would await them. The fear the of the Red Death was quickly put from their minds, as well as the suffering of the commoners who they'd abandoned to the plague.
Unbeknownst to them the Red Death was very much still nipping at their heels.
Rosalie Belanger is the daughter of an Earl and her family knew death well before the outbreak of the plaque. Rosalie's younger sister, Mary died from pneumonia when she was five and Rosalie seven. Then soon after when her mother gave birth to a son, he died in his cradle in the night. Now her mother has fallen to the Red Death, sending their family once more into mourning. Even so her father doesn't hesitate to move himself and his remaining child to the Prince's castle, where he hopes they'll be spared. Rosalie resents that the aristocrats were all abandoning their subjects to the disease, but out of loyalty to her father, who is overcome with grief, she relents.
Kamijo Yamada is a foreign Prince visiting the Prospero Kingdom, when the plague breaks out. He came to the kingdom to further his education and to learn more about the world. But in order to keep the plague from spreading to neighboring countries, no one is allowed to leave. This results in Kamijo being unable to return home to his family in Japan. Even with the borders closed he fears his family and his people may also be in danger from the plague. He will do anything in order to survive, even if it means hiding away at Prince Prospero's castle.
