Martial Art Book

Meh, that one is actually quite rubbish, she is just a dragon armour pilot with a big hammer. Nothing your average terrestrial martial artist would have to worry about and even less so a wargod or a celestial exalt.

My main concern is... wouldn't someone winning such a tournament against such oponents exalt at the very moment? I mean... doesn't that scream DAWNCASTE?

Hey, a mortal who has awakened essence and stunts like a motherfucker is going to be almost as good as a Dragonblood if stuff like artifacts and hearthstones are disallowed.

Not stunting for the die bonuses, you understand, because I'll assume the DB will be doing that too. But for the essence regen. A mortal who knows a charm or two in the hands of a player that can 2 die stunt everything they do is surprisingly dangerous. Especially in 2e, where they actually have DVs.

I haven't read scroll of the Monk yet, so I haven't had a chance to check out if it answers something that's been rattling around in my head for a while - Can mortals get Martial arts excellencies of some kind?

There's another possiblity here.  What if the fighters aren't using their bodies to fight at all.  It might be a neato idea if they were instead in control of some sort of robotic body for the purposes of the tournament.  That way, everyone is on equal grounds where physical ability is concerned and only martial arts skill is used.  Also, it is convenient because then no one will die.

Can you seriously see Ol' Concy being involved with something in which no one dies? boring!

On the other hand, the idea of Celestial Battlebots is magnificently wonderous.

So far, no mortals cannot get any form of Excellency, outside of the Solar Lore charm that gives them access to Solar Charms so long as their boss keeps 15 motes commited to them. However, there are a number of Terrestrial styles which add the user's essence to their martial arts attacks when one has their form charm up...which can help an Awakened Mortal Martial Artist a great deal. Crimson Pentacle Blade and Fivefold Shadow Palm, for example. First Pulse form also adds 2 dice, while subtracting 1 from the speed of all attacks. Ill Lily form adds half essence to unarmed or form attacks, while Jade Mountain adds Essence to Stength, effectivelly giving a dice adder for damage and grappling. A Terrestial Martial Artist mortal has a fair number of options...even Terrestrial Hero has a Dice adding option in its form charm (though the soak or dice makes it a hard choice, considering the whole no lethal soak for a mortal). Missing out on excellencies can hurt, but its the inability to combo that really catches the mortal...  well, aside from the small essence pool. Still, mortal martialartist can be suprisingly tough... and once you have one, it's not too hard for that one to learn how to train others with the Thaumaturgical ritual found in Scroll of the Monk...much safer than the Celestial Cocaine, and anyone can do it. Scroll of the Monk even gives us the xp cost for the mortal Martial Artist for charms, which is the same as that of anyone else stepping up to the next level, 12 if favored, 15 if not.
