Ophelia’s reassurance and her solid plan calmed Liv. Claire and Luce’s appearance also made her breathe a sigh of relief. Though they were injured, Pamela’s magic was more than enough to help them heal. Now it looked like everyone in Squad A were accounted for. At the same time, her sweethearts walked up to her, Jerod holding the messenger bag, which surprisingly stayed mostly intact throughout the battle, and Lilia looking dejected.
“Sorry mistress. I let you get hurt...” Lilia whispered. If it was possible, Liv was sure that Lilia’s eyes would have been filled with tears.
”It’s quite alright, Lilia. You – all of you have done a good job defending us and the tower,” better than Liv did, at least, but she dismissed the thought as quickly as it came. She considered Lilia’s mood and Masa’s hand, then decided, ”Masa, Lilia, thank you for your hard work. Please, take a break until I need you again.”
Before the pair could argue, Liv retracted her magic, and caught the two before they could clatter onto the floor. If she’d allowed them the chance to voice their disagreement, she would no doubt just give into their whims.
“Here you go. Zipper’s busted though,” Jerod said, holding the bag out. Liv thanked him quietly and placed the two inside, then turned back to the squad.
Now that they have a clear goal, her mind didn’t feel like a muddled mess anymore. Before she could say anything though, she heard Una exclaim that she would retrieve May, and the girl promptly dashed outside through a window. Jerod made a weird sound that sounded like a mix of a gag and a whine at the reminder of May. Liv frowned. What in the world happened to May? But, deciding that she would find out as soon as Una came back, Liv dropped the matter and focused on their task at hand: interrogation.
Without any experience or knowledge of how interrogations worked though, Liv jumped in surprise when Pamela turned her pan and knife on the enemy men restrained by Claire’s magic. Her jaws dropped when one of the man made a mockery of Pamela’s accent. Worried that the girl’s fiery temper could lead her to unleash her rage on him, Liv hurriedly said, ”Pam- ahem, I mean, Pan Pan, I think the way you speak is lovely.”
Jerod snorted, but said nothing.
Regardless of whether Liv managed to pacify Pamela, she turned her eyes to Luce in shock when she roughly tore the goggles off the man’s face. Luce followed up by blinding the man, then thrusted her feather-turned-weapon into his cheek.
“Ohoho, I like the way you do things!” Jerod grinned gleefully. With a deft leap, he clung himself onto Luce’s shoulders. “Didn’t know you had it in you sweet cheeks!” He pulled out his own knife and waved it dangerously close to the one already lodged in the man’s face. “Best listen to these girlies, unless you want a second one up in your face. Well, it’s fine if you do. Where would you want me to stick it? Your eye? Nose? Oh! Maybe somewhere down lower-“
”Jerod!” Liv exclaimed in horror. What in the world has gotten into him? She had never seen him so... So cruel. That went for Pamela and Luce too, in fact. It was one thing to kill the enemies to defend themselves and others. But to torture them like this? Liv was beginning to feel sick to her stomach again. ”Everyone, please, I’m sure there are other ways to do this. Maybe Miss Fortune has something that could help? Or- oh, Crescent Moon, do you have any suggestions?”
“C’mon Liv! Did these guys show us mercy? They broke Masa’s hand!” Jerod argued back heatedly. But even as he said this, he lowered his knife, seemingly content to oblige and let the girls handle things.
”I mean, no, they didn’t. But...” Liv bit her lip, then turned to Claire and Ophelia for their thoughts on the matter. If the majority decided that torture is the best means to receive answers, then so be it.
