What is a Mancer? In this world, everyone has inherent magical abilities— those who decide to use their magic and pursue a career with them are known as Mancers. Everyone has potential with it, but you must train and practice with it in order to grow stronger.
There are many different types of Mancers— from the Pyromancers that can wield the power of fire, to the Chronomancers who can control time, to even a handful of Lactomancers that can use milk magic. Every Mancer's magical ability manifests itself differently. The more experienced you are as a Mancer, the more you can do with your magic. For example, a novice Pyromancer may only be able to shoot fireballs, while an experienced Pyromancer can shoot fireballs, create walls of fire, manipulate fire whips, etc.
However, Mancers are not just your typical mage. There are two different types of Mancers: Casters and Enchanters. Casters use magic as is, and are what comes to mind when one thinks of a mage or sorcerer. They typically use a staff or rod as a focus for their magic. Casting fire balls, lightning bolts, and energy blasts are standard fare for Casters. On the other hand, Enchanters use their magic to enhance their preferred weapon. This can manifest itself as a flaming sword, freezing punches, electrified arrows, and more. Regardless of if you are a Caster or Enchanter, magic can be used to alter and enhance your body (eg. shapeshifting, teleportation, enhanced speed, etc.)
It is VERY rare for a Mancer to have control over more than one element. Only the most powerful and experienced of Mancers can even use two elements. If you meet a Mancer who can use multiple elements, it’s a sign that they are extremely strong and should be treated as such.
The Mancer Training AcademyIn order to become a Mancer, you must enroll in the Mancer Training Academy. You can enroll as soon as you turn 16, and courses last for a year before you can graduate and are granted the title of Junior Mancer. At the Mancer Training Academy, each student manifests their magical ability to find out what kind of Mancer they are and works with the staff to train and gain experience with their abilities.
While enrollment is open to all ages, it is rare to see students over the age of 20 or so. The power of magic within someone is most malleable in the teenage years, so training is easiest (and quickest) in the teenage years. It isn’t unheard of to see older students at the Mancer Training Academy, but it is known that it is much more difficult to start your training past a certain age.
Students at the Mancer Training Academy rapidly gain skill and experience with magic until hitting a plateau around the end of their time there. Surpassing this plateau requires a much greater amount of experience and training that is done independently while working in the Guild.
The Mancer Guild200 years ago, there was a great war between the Mancers known as the Mancer Saga. The exact reasons for the war have been lost to history, but the war ended with the unification of the world, and the creation of what is known as the Mancer Guild. The Mancer Guild is a worldwide program that was created to rebuild the world, help people, foster collaboration between Mancers, and prevent another great war from happening.
After graduating from the Mancer Training Academy, students are required to register with the Mancer Guild. The Mancer Guild has a registry of every single Mancer in the world that includes each Mancer’s name, branch, and Mancer Class, which refers to their element and whether they are a Caster or Enchanter (ex. an Enchanter Pyromancer, a Caster Electromancer, etc.) The Mancer Guild has a branch in every region of the world.
Once someone is registered with the Mancer Guild, they are able to take jobs. Jobs are submitted by the civilians of the world and can range from requests as simple as “please slay these monsters, they keep eating my chickens” to more complex ones like “I need a Mancer who can infiltrate this underground crime ring and save my daughter that they kidnapped.”
The simple jobs are posted on bulletin boards in the common area of each Guild building, allowing any Mancer (or group of Mancers) to take on the job. Jobs that require more skill are typically given to Senior Mancers, at the discretion of the head of each branch.
Every Mancer starts as a Junior Mancer. In order to become a Senior Mancer, you must travel across the world and receive an Emblem from every branch of the Mancer Guild.
Senior Mancers receive more high level jobs, higher pay per job, and are generally more well-respected by the community.
(The map was drawn by yours truly. I know it's not amazing, but hopefully it gets the idea across!)
The world is divided into 6 regions: Clove, Rosa-Rosa, Goldlily, Cyan, Sapphira, and the Kingdom of Alexandria. The overall continent does not have a name. As far as everyone is concerned, this is just “the world," and there are no other continents or civilizations. On the west coast is a vast, endless ocean and the east coast is an impassable wasteland of spiked mountains. There have been attempts to cross both to see what else is out there, but nobody has returned alive.
There is one goddess-- Estelle. The people believe that it was her who gave every person the potential to use magic. Most people believe in her and pay respects to her once a year, but there are a number of devout followers who have dedicated much of their lives to worshiping and serving her.
Below are brief summaries of each region, with full lore and details to be expanded upon in-RP:
- Clove: A land composed of grasslands, rolling hills, temperate forests, and farmlands. Most of the settlements are small villages with <1000 people, though there are a few cities. Their biggest value is community.
- Rosa-Rosa: A mostly uninhabitable desert. There is a large oasis in the center of the region that fosters its only city. It's known for its large markets, but is incredibly corrupt. In Rosa-Rosa, cash is king. Their biggest value is money.
- Goldlily: A community built among the mountains. Their economy is a combination of mining and tourism. The people are notably strong and rugged. Their biggest value is strength.
- Cyan: A snowy, but technological region with many undiscovered caves. Many of the caves here contain Energy Crystals which supply power and electricity. There are many factories in this region, and they supply the world with most of its technology. Their biggest value is intelligence.
- Sapphira: A beachy, tropical region. Many of the cities are built right against the shoreline, and the east is mostly filled with rainforests. The people here are very relaxed and have laws to limit work hours. Their biggest value is freedom.
- The Kingdom of Alexandria: The capital of the world. It's the smallest overall, but is bustling economically. It is well-renowned for its art, culture and fashion, though it can come across as superficial. Their biggest value is status.
It is the year 200 P.S. (Post Saga). You are a Junior Mancer. You have been working under the Mancer Guild for about a year now within the Kingdom of Alexandria. Everybody in the Kingdom has been buzzing about the Bicentennial Celebration that's going to be happening in just a few weeks now! The royal family is going all out on preparations and they have decided to assemble a team of Mancers to help them!
You get called to the office of the Mancer Guild alongside four other Mancers you may or may not know. The Branch President has some very exciting news for you: the Royal Family has specifically requested the five of you to assemble and become the Celebration Crew! In order to prepare for the Celebration, they have a list of tasks they need you to complete for them. As a bonus, if you help complete all of them, the Alexandria branch of the Mancer Guild has promised to give all of you an Emblem-- you'll be one step closer to becoming a Senior Mancer!
This will be more challenging than any request you've done before, but the reward is worth it. And who knows? Maybe this could be the start of a new, grand adventure...?
Rules & Expectations
1. All OOC content for this RP will be run on DISCORD! This includes plotting, general chat, lore questions, character relationship discussion, etc. I find it is just a lot easier to run things when there is a hub for all players to chat in.
2. Like in every RP, please be kind! No negativity, racism, homophobia, transphobia, etc. Be a nice person!!
3. I am looking for FOUR others for this RP. I want this RP to have the feeling of being in a JRPG or a shonen manga, and I feel like five is a good group size to start with. Because of this limit, it will be APPLICATION BASED. The application won't be very long-- I just want to get an idea of who you are as a writer and the character you want to play.
4. I know that we all have lives and stuff, so I don't expect you to be posting every single day! I'm hoping with a Discord server it'll help people keep in touch easily. I'd like to have a turn-based posting system where everyone has a week to post once it is their turn. If you're unable to post without notice or an extension, I'll give an interest check and potential removal if necessary.
5. I would prefer all roleplayers be 18+. This is just a matter of comfort, as I am an adult and prefer to write with other adults. All characters will be 18+.
6. I'm not super familiar with the post-length/grammar terms and lingo, but just know I'm not expecting a novel for every post. I just want players who can give something substantial with each post and know how to string a sentence together.
7. I would really like this RP to be a "communal" experience between the party, so to speak! I have plenty of lore and ideas for the story, but I'd love to work together as a party to plot and create lore together!
Tone & Inspirations
Ever since I was a kid, I've been a MASSIVE fan of JRPG's. I was enraptured by the worlds of Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, and had always dreamed of making my own adventures in those games. I've also find myself having a recent fascination with shonen anime and manga as I started reading One Piece and watching Hunter x Hunter. I want this RP to have excitement and adventure with an overall fun and light-hearted tone. The world of Mancers is bright and full of hope, even if there are evil-doers and bad guys in it. Not everything is taken super seriously, and I want there to be plenty of characters with wacky names, interesting powers, and compelling backstories. I've always found that if you start silly and fun, it makes the serious moments hit much harder.
Specific inspirations: Final Fantasy V, Trails in the Sky, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, Dragon Quest series, Kirby series, One Piece, Hunter x Hunter(Zero knowledge of these properties is required, I just figure they'd help in understanding the overall vibe if you did know them!)
