Alright, I won't lie. It's Commander 2015. It's got me too excited for my new Commander deck. I want to do a MtG-based rp, ASAP.

I will probably base it on one of two plot lines. In the first, you're a new and original Planeswalker going between the realms as they desire. You'd build a "deck" theme of spells that represent your Planeswalker abilities and I will likely create these cards of your characters on Cardsmith for the fun of it. The second plotline takes us through the events of a couple of realms as creatures in service of a single Planeswalker. We'd pick existing creatures or make our own (again, I will probably get too excited and make these) and form the front lines of creatures currently declared attacking the enemy. I also don't see why the two can't be combined; I'd love to have a Commander and Planeswalker character set with a bunch of lackeys running around.

This rp will encourage knowledge of the mechanics and game-breaking levels of power that most rps don't account for. But if you don't know much anything, that's fine, I'll be glad to teach the game and its lore to an interested party.

While I gauge everyone's interest, do you play MtG or are you interested? What's your format? What decks do you play with? Feel free to strike up conversation and chat a bit, I just want to see who in the community would be interested in an rp based on a card game.

I didn't think Magic was that obscure? Even so, I'm considering running it based on magic and loosening up to accommodate more newcomers. I'll give this a little while before calling judgement, though I figured the card game was quite a bit popular.

When I say interested in MtG I mean that I have decks and everything and I used to play but now don't have a community to play with. I have a gruul deck focusing on Monstrosity and a WRB Allies deck from Battle for Zendikar.

Crazy interested! I play with a white, black, and red deck centered on Kaala of the Vast and angels, dragons, and demons.

I hoped to find a roleplay centered around the guilds of Ravnica when I clicked this. I can't imagine a richer setting for an MTG RP.

Oh, glad to see these responses. I agree completely, whatever we do will probably be starting in Ravnica or Theros as they're easy to dive into and in my opinion, really fun worlds. I'm going to try to keep lore succinct and accessible, so that would be a lot of help. I'm no slouch when it comes to learning my lore but I am afraid that I'll go on forever if allowed to.

Before I get this started, do you all have an opinion on the planeswalker/creature distinction? And though I have an idea in mind, do you want to start in Ravnica?

I probably need to know some Ravnica and Theros lore. I get the general idea from the cards but not as much.

Since we're all going to be planeswalkers, maybe we should use those GM-created planeswalker cards for alliances? Like, if you want that player's planeswalker card in your deck, gotta win that person's friendship. Just an idea.

Questions: Will be there a limit to deck size? How does shuffling decks and reading hands work?

@Cosmoknot it really depends on what type of roleplay you're itching to create. If you want a player = planeswalker story where they jump from world to world, then the particular starting plane isn't that big of a factor.

But if you want players to build creature characters (beings in a particular realm) and your story stays in that world in order to save, conquer, or destroy it; then which plane you pick will greatly matter. Honestly, the only MtG roleplay that would lure me in would be a guild focused—rather than planeswalker focused—Ravnica story.

But by all means, go in whichever direction excites you.

The Ten Guilds of Ravnica. You know you want to pick one. (B')

its such a hard choice, I love Dimir, Simic, Golgari, Orzhov and Izzet, Should I go with the one I'm best at, Dimir? Oh but I love the other guilds flavour... Ah gud the choice.

Even the darkest corners of Ravnica still lie in the shadow of the Church.
Syndicate Enforcer

I gotta go Orzhov. (> :) ) If you go Dimir we might have to draw up an alliance.

I know what kind of personality I want to play in the mtg universe, question is what colours best represent it.

Ugh... I love Gruul ... But I don't think I want to play that kinda style as a character... I guess I could make an Izzet mage. Hmm... I do like Izzet a lot... Yeah...

Well, as far as the rp goes, I'm considering opening options to be a creature, in which case you have relative statistics that match power and abilities. If you're a planeswalker, you won't have a "deck", necessarily, but rather a style of magic based on the mana colors and spells that you typically cast. When it comes to the cards, planeswalker abilities are just the spells they tend to cast at that point. I'll ask each person to come up with 3-4 abilities that mirror spells that could appear their colors.

I will probably use the guilds in Ravnica at their current point in the story before branching out. With the reformation of a guild pact not based on magic there's plenty of room to kick off conflict. Maybe something about a sudden influx of planeswalkers on the plane, which is just something that's going to happen by nature of rp.

Either way, if anyone wants help balancing a character's abilities or choosing their colors feel free to shoot me a message. If you have character story that you'd like to see in the plot, I'll also be glad to write it into the story a bit. I think I'll have several planar events in a sandbox world rather than forcing a storyline, but if anyone is interested in specific planes or conflicts I'd love to include those as well.

Here are a couple of resources for learning more about the guilds if you're unfamiliar or want some information:

I may run a general story line based on a closure of the Zendikar storyline, the effects of the re-emergence of the Nephilim, and a strange force that draws planeswalkers to Ravnica that none can explain. I'll probably be joining up as part of my first and favorite guild, Orzhov, and posting up the current Guild orders as events develop.
