Although her grandfather and uncle possess this skill, her father doesn't inherit it, so he works as an assistant in his brother's (the uncle's) metal shop. When a famine strikes their rural town, Kel's grandfather and mother die and business at the shop wanes. At around this time, she also discovers that she has the ability to generate electricity. Due to these events, she and her remaining family members decide to migrate closer to the city to find more customers and hopefully send her to magic school.

Rough backstory timeline (because I feel like it might be confusing with all the "her uncle, aka her dad's brother" wording):

- Age 7: Kel discovers she has inherited the ability to bend metal and helps with her uncle's metalsmith shop.
- Age 10: A famine creeps up on their town (it doesn't happen overnight).
- Age 13: Her mother and grandfather die of malnutrition. Kel discovers she has the ability to generate electricity, after a freak incident while working in the shop. Her family believes that she inherited the recessive trait to generate electricity and decides it would be a good idea to send her to a magic school. As well, due to the local famine, her uncle's metalsmith shop is not selling as much, so they migrate to the city where the magic school is.

When Andrei was 5 he was introduced to his first corpse, his uncle's, he was killed by Andrei's father for betraying the family. When Andriel was 8 he was given his first magic skill Physical Enhancement and he was involved in several fights and won each of them. When Andriel was 10 he was got his second skill Blood Lust from when he lost his first fight. After he lost, the ability was given and forced on him after he used Physical Enhancement 4 times to defeat his foe, Andrei then went into a frenzy and brutally killed his first person. When Andrei was 14 he brutally killed an entire Mafia group on his own because of his Blood Lust skill, a group that had several of his friends. He promised himself never to use the skill, intentionally, again. Andrei moved to the US and enrolled to the magic school when he was 16.

Especially if they take it badly. She’s sensitive to others’ moods and expressions, not that she realizes it. It helps her during games and sports, as she can sometimes anticipate players’ actions.

This sensitivity makes her easy to hurt. Oh not physically, she barely (more or less) cared when she broke her arm last year, but teasing cuts deep. She’s quick to cry, but lucky to usually be around friends to defend her.

Now she’s learned a few simple spells, cast with juju powder and her juju knife, but due to her vision just before realizing she was magical, her neighbor felt she was to become a bridge between all magics. Thus, instead of teaching her, she has sent her to this school.

that's fine, I was just worried you had the wrong impression of dyslexia and that it made it near impossible to read. This may be the case for some, but most of the time it just makes it harder. This is from experience, I am not a docter.

No, I know you can definitely learn to read; it just takes a different technique. Isn't there a font that makes it easier as well? And you're right, by 11, she definitely would have been found to be dyslexic and been taught. Most of the people I knew who were dyslexic, I couldn't tell 'in class' since they read everything normally from what I could tell. It was just mentioned offhand. It's only a couple of older adults that I know who have extra trouble reading still. They're still some of the smartest people I know.
