Hay all fox-die here, im new around the compendium forums, anyway enough of the intro i kinda need some help:

1) can lunars smell death taint on abyssals naturally?, and i know that death taint is a flaw, but thx to some confussing freinds i am under the impression that all abyssal's have some sort of... tell as it were.apparently lunars can liturally smell that an abyssal is an abyssal... is this true?


and also


2) with the following scores


   Medicine: 5


   Lore: 5


   Occult: 5


   Wispers: 4


is it therortically possibly for an abyssal to make some sort of virus/ritual/spell to stop a lunar from smelling his death taint for a short while... say a week ? or less...


so far i havnt found anything within my exalted books, but im just one of those players that thinks to much outside the square (twighlight or daybreak)

I don't recall ever reading anything like that. Sounds like something your friends made up.

In the back of the Lunars book, where it talks about relatiobships between them and other Exalts, it says that Lunars think Abyssals "smell wrong" and that one of them "recognised the scent of her former mate".


But it could be just metaphorical.

I don't have the lunar book handy, but to my understanding I thought all "good" abyssals (as in they follow that their lord want) portay death in most manners, meaning smell as well. Lunars have nifty charms, it's possible they have smell charms that can sniff you out. I'm pretty sure they have one to sniff out ghosts.


If it were my game, I'd allow the abbyssal to jurry rig something to no smell and look so dead. But if the lunars are indeed using a charm it would only work against mundane detection.

Not that I know of. If the abyssal is dealing with Resonance, then he might smell a little funky.


Abyssals also have the charms which allow them to become other people (once killing them of course). This can throw a lunar off your scent.

No that sounds about right, i remember are resident lunar saying something alone those lines

It's possible that a Lunar could smell out an Abyssal, especially if he smells a little musty from wearing those old, moldy, deathly accoutrements, or hanging around crypts too long. Otherwise, it seems a little reminiscent of Werewolf: The Apocalypse's Wyrm-taint, don't you think? But then I hear animals are good judges of character, so perhaps the instinctual wrongness about somebody could kick in, unless the Abyssal uses some charms on himself to throw the Lunar off-track.

well you make a good point, still i do wonder if i used my abyssals abilities is it possible to create some sort of death taint deoderant.... i am a thinker when it comes to games unfortunatly when it comes to exalted i lack techniqal jargon... sigh, o well i have another question however


:arrow:  If it is not possible to make a virus of some sort to get rid of a lunars ability to smell death taint (lets say its the merit version of this skill, taints warning pg 28 of the players guide)... is it possible to make something that feeds on lunar only essence....... all in all though i guess i just need to find out how to speak the jargon of exalted when it comes to these things... any book references ?

That could be twisted in a thousand ways to make especially nasty things that the Deathlords could unleash on an unassuming population...


Viruses that mutate Thaumaturges, giving them a random Pox or Deficiency on a failure versus the disease, a botch would give them a Affliction or Debility. :cry:


A virus that infects the Essence of a Solar, giving him eternal flu-like symptoms or allowing a link to his soul similar to whispers. :shock:


A virus that causes Lunacy style frenzy in Lunars. :x


Maybe one that causes all Dragonblooded infected with it to blow a mote into their anima every time they sneeze and making them randomly allergic to one thing for a month. :lol:

It's up to you on how the Essence flows from the body.  I'm a Celtic Witch, so I picture it the same way I do in ritual, flowing like an extension of the body, out to do what the conscious and subconscious minds will it to do.  Kind of like a plasmic soul.

I thought there was a sidereal martial art that does just that - corrupting the flow of essence through an individual to dangerous and sometimes comical effects.


In terms of the question at hand, lunars don't have any outright abilities that turn them into abyssal homing devices, they simply tend to be more perceptive than most other creatures.  Scent combined with high perception rolls grants them this ability, but I don't think that they have any innate, mystical sense.  This whole notion smacks a little too much of the old weaver/wyrm thing in oWoD where vampires and werewolves were naturally opposed because of their intrinsic nature, but the cosmology of exalted is not the same, nor are the origins of the various entities.  When I saddle up to the cafeteria feast that is White Wolf, I, like many, prefer my Exalted as I like my jello dessert, sequestered far from the salisbury steak and mac-n-cheese that is the rest of the WW lines.


As far as a virus goes, I think one that targets the flows of essence specifically is a bit overkill, since charms aren't necessarily the source of a lunar's perceptive acumen; you'd probably cripple the lunar beyond their ability to defend themselves, but they still would be able to sniff you out.  If you're going to go to all that trouble, you might as well just kill them, but that's just the Scottie in me speaking.  Just giving a lunar a really nasty cold would probably do the trick, enough snot and watery eyes and that lunar wouldn't notice Autochton sneaking up on him.


edit: one thing to keep in mind also is that even very skilled Abyssals have a hard time masquerading as anything but the evil MF'ers that they are.  Between resonance and the fact that as you get higher essence, you have to either skyrocket your appearance or drop it all together, you don't get many abyssals that don't stand out for what they are at first sight.

You could alaways make a Stealth Charm that masks scent.  If could even give off the scent of someone whom you took blood and/or essence from when you commint the motes.

I once played an old school mage who had an echo where everyone around him always smelled their favorite scent.  Was fun because while one person smelled fresh baked bread whenever he was around, another smelled roses and another smelled motor oil.  When we encountered an NPC who insisted that he smelled astroglide, it was only a matter of time though before the game fell into the gutter.
