A young man, seventeen years of age, who went by the name Kazuma Yagami, lie sprawled out on his bed, the covers all over the place and a bit of drool leaking from his mouth as he snored away. Sunlight peeked through his window, shining on his face, though not for long, as the light almost woke him, his closed eyes threatening to open. Moaning in irritation, he tossed around in his sleep, pulling his blanket up and over his head while doing so, trying to block out the light with the fabric. It worked to a certain degree, though he shouldn't have bothered with trying to get any further sleep, as only moments later there was a loud and incessant banging at his door.
Moaning once more, he muttered almost pathetically, "Go away." Doing his best to keep from opening his eyes all the while.
The banging only got louder, a female voice being heard over it as she semi-shouted, "Wake up dork! It's almost time for school!"
Groaning in disappointment as well as annoyance, he opened his eyes, threw the covers off of himself and began climbing out of the bed to his feet. "Fine."
Apparently, the girl didn't hear that. "Did you hear me!? I said get up!"
Scowling, he kicked his blanket out of the way, the thing having fallen off his bed when he got up, before responding, "I heard you already, I'm awake alright!?"
The girl could be heard scoffing from outside the room, possibly a whatever coming out of her mouth as well, before the sound of her footsteps told of her leaving.
Yawning as he scratched the back of his head, he turned to his body length mirror, his bleary eyes barely able to make out his reflection staring back at him. He didn't bother to move from where he stood, as he debated over whether or not to ditch school today.
He wasn't one for breaking the rules really, but he found he just didn't care, as he knew what awaited him at school. Ridicule, scorn, mockery, laughter. Why? There was a list of reasons...
He had no luck with the ladies, which made him a loser.
He actually paid attention in class and did his work, that made him a geek.
He loved anime, manga and video games, that made him a nerd.
He actually enjoyed to read, and writing was his passion, that made him a boring bookworm.
He wasn't afraid to let the few friends he had know he much he loved them, and how much he appreciated them, that made him a wuss.
He hugged his guy friends, that made him gay.
He enjoyed the darker side of entertainment, no matter whether it was music, books, television or gaming, that made him a freak.
He had a thing for romance, that made him a pussy.
He didn't fight back when he was made fun of and picked on, that made him a bitch.
He was, of course, still a virgin, that made him a failure as a man.
He was Kazuma Yagami, and that made him the most hated person at his school.
That's when he let his eyes leave his reflection and wander around his room, his mind still jumbled up with thoughts. It was an honest little space, a bed just big enough for him, a small closet, one window with a pair of black curtains hanging, and a desk with a computer set up, a rolling chair to go along with it.
Suddenly remembering that if he didn't hurry up and get down stairs, being on the second floor, that he'd miss out on breakfast, he broke himself from the trance and made his way over to the closet, forgetting all about ditching as he did. Grabbing whatever was in sight, said first spotted clothing being a pair of blue jeans and a long sleeved white shirt, he closed the closet door and began to get dressed.
In the middle of doing so though, a little ping was heard from his desktop, and he stumbled over to check what it was about, doing so with his pants only halfway up, and one of his arms sticking out of his neck hole for his shirt. He straightened up his shirt, and began to pull up his pants, moving his mouse and lighting up the screen on his monitor as he did, after falling into his chair of course. While doing this, he muttered to himself, "Can't believe I forgot to turn the damn computer off again, how stupid can you be Kazuma? Do you want it to overheat?"
Immediately spotting what had made the noise, he clicked on it, opening his new e-mail. "Who the hell would send me a message this early in the morning?" He asked quietly to himself.
Upon reading the heading, and who it was from, his heart sped up, but not in a good way. It was from his best friend Kyo, and the heading read 'URGENT!'
Not wasting anymore time, he began to read it.
Kazuma, this is awful! I don't know who, but someone somehow managed to find out about your little secret! You know that virtual girlfriend of yours? Yeah, videos of you and her chatting, they've been posted all over the internet! I'm talking Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Reddit, Google Plus, dude they even posted it to fucking MySpace, no one even uses MySpace anymore!
You'd best keep your head low and stay home, if not for the rest of your life, which is really the best option at this point, then at least for today. Otherwise...they're gonna tear you apart at school man, you know that.
I'm sorry, this is all I can do for you buddy, just stay out of dodge, alright?
Kazuma's eyes were wide, filled with a mix of emotions, his jaw was near reaching the floor, agape in horror, and beads of sweat began to form and roll down his forehead. He was utterly speechless, no idea what to do now that everyone at school knew about his little secret. He'd be torn apart, and then his remains would be pecked at and dragged off by the weaker vultures of his school. He was fucked, no ifs, ands or buts about it.
As he pulled up his browser, and searched for the video, he wondered, "Who could have possibly done this!? I don't let anyone into my room, no one! EVER! Even Kyo has only been in here a few times, and there isn't a single person I trust more!"
The video began playing, showing his head in a screen next to a virtual girl, who, unlike him, could be seen in entirety. The fact that it was formatted like this, with her being on one side of the screen, and his face and sometimes the rest of him on the other side, told him that whoever did this used his computer to do it. As when talking to her, her name being Ariel, his computer turned on the camera built into his monitor, so she could 'see him', as he had tweaked it to. He did this, as it allowed her to track him and react to his movements.
Ariel was a product of several software programs, hardware upgrades, maybe an illegal site or two, as well as a bit of meddling on his part...okay a lot of meddling, a lot of meddling in the form of tweaking and doing a few things he probably shouldn't have. In doing all of this, Kazuma managed to create his own personal VI, which honestly bordered on the line of being an AI, and he took it a step further, giving it a form as well as a name.
He had created her exactly four years ago, the day of his thirteenth birthday, using all the resources at his disposal to do so. He was a genius in his own right for doing such a thing, he had a lot of help however. He had studied under his mom's brother, who had been possibly the biggest technical wiz in the world, before he passed away a few days after his nephew's thirteenth birthday. From his tutelage under him, as well as research on the matter online, and all the software and hardware he purchased, getting the money for this from Kyo, his mother, his saved up cash from previous birthdays, and doing a bunch of little side jobs that kids his age could have handled, such as raking yards, taking dogs for walks and babysitting, he was able to create Ariel.
It took a lot of work, but it really paid off in the end. When he had no one to talk to, Ariel was there to listen, when he had a bad day, Ariel was there to cheer him up, when he was depressed, Ariel was there to help him cope, when he was lonely, Ariel was there to keep him company, Ariel was always there, even when no one else could be or wanted to be.
Ariel was also there when his...uhm, hormones, got the best of him, but that was a different matter entirely. And thankfully none of those sessions had been uploaded.
All the other ones had however. When he talked to her about depression, when he talked to her about thinking of hurting himself, when he talked to her about girls, when he talked to her about sex, when he talked to her about relationships, when he talked to her about love, all of them posted for the world to see.
"But who could have done this!? No one has been in my room for over a week! When could anyone have possibly-" Kazuma was cut off then, as a new window opened, completely unbidden, revealing a white background and the same girl he had just been watching a video of.
