Twelve years after the deaths of the original killjoys at the hands of BLI, their followers try and carry on their legacy in the desert surrounding the infamous Bat City, including two such people who spend every day locked in a battle for survival: against the elements, against their enemies, and against the world.

The sun was at its peak in the summer sky over Zone 6, and Votive Vessel wanted nothing more than to curl up in the shade with whatever video game he could get his hands on that day and wait out the heat. Unfortunately for him there was no shelter in sight just yet, and after the firefight he had just barely managed to wiggle his way out of, he couldn’t afford to stop moving even if there was.

Typical. No rest for the weary in this godforsaken world.

Even though he knew putting on his goggles would likely make the heat exhaustion worse, his eyes felt like they were going to burn out of his skull at any second. Sighing, he removed the goggles from his forehead, wiped the sweat off the inside as best he could, and then strapped them over his eyes. He could already feel the moisture returning seconds after he put them on, but at least he felt like he could see again.

It was just as well, too. Right as Votive’s vision adjusted to the red-tinted view he had just given himself, he spotted something – someone – up ahead. His first instinct, of course, was to reach for his blaster. You could never be too careful, especially when you were alone. But it didn’t take long for him to register that the person wasn’t moving. In fact, they weren’t even vertical.

As he got closer, he was relieved to see that whoever they were, they weren’t from BLI. He didn’t know them, but from the looks of their dyed green hair and outfit that dared to sport some amount of individuality compared all of Bat City’s Scarecrow units put together, he knew that they were an ally.

And they weren’t in good shape.

Votive took a moment to scan his surroundings. He was alone, save for the downed killjoy at his feet. He knew he was only about a mile away from his group’s current base. And he knew that he felt like he was going to die if he couldn’t get a sip of water or crash in a shaded area soon.

He looked back down. Damnit, he couldn’t afford to lug someone back to base with him, not right now. If he hadn’t just scraped out of a fight with the Scarecrows and exhausted himself beyond measure, then maybe it was possible. But this? Was it really better to risk two people dying while trying to save someone rather than just let the one expire

Votive knew the answer. Or he thought he did, anyway. It didn’t really matter because regardless of what he would have liked to have done, he found himself hooking his arms under the killjoy’s shoulders, without any regard for whether or not they would have even liked to come with him, and started hauling them away from what could have been their final resting spot in a world that always seemed to have more important things to worry about than the dignity of the dead… and the living.
