------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Two-hundred-fourteen years. Two-hundred-fourteen years of successfully sustained life in an

underground Vault known as Vault 26. Vault 26 is one of the most successful Vaults known to have existed. Its purpose is to sustain life in a 'greenhouse,' which is a frequently sanitized area with various plants and animals. Fruits and vegetables, flies and crickets, lizards and frogs, and a lot of other creatures. All of these were issued to Overseer Gregory Pottes, which he made sure of preserving in this given 'greenhouse.'

Two-hundred-fourteen years of this preserved life. No mutations, no contaminants. All is well in the

Vault. The Vault Overseer and Vault Gardeners have been doing well with the massive garden for a long while now. The 'garden' is a giant underground forest, consisting of hundreds of species of plants, animals, vegetables, fruits and even insects. Everything is going well. Or so it seems.

My eyes lazily open as the dream ends. I sigh and sit up, knowing that sleeping in for awhile clearly won't work out after that dream. I scoot on to the end of the bed and move my legs over the edge of it. After a few stretches and quickly rubbing my face to fight off the sleep, I stand up and decide to dress in something besides a tank top and pants. I throw on my Vault suit and my utility belt then place my 10mm in its holster also placing my combat knife in it's sheath.

"Time for the overseer to over see..." I say and chuckle quietly before walking out of my room and into my office.

( dakup )

John whistles to himself as he slow dances with a pressure heater; wrench in hand. "I just want to start! I flame in your heart...." His vault suit is stained with rust and grease and grim, and what have you. The dimly lit field gently turned into a fake rising sun setting and he stenches his back a bit. "It's a great glorious day!!!!" He yells down the hall way leading to the residential quarters. They might complain but it will give them something to talk about. At least they have hot water this morning. Placing his adjustable wrench back in it's pail he turns his Pip Boy up and whistles down the hall to meet every one in the cafeteria.

James gets up from his bed, still half drunk from last night. Hes not drunk enough to stumble around, but a enough to get a little angry. he gets out of his room and goes into the living room waring his signature trench coat. he straps his 10mm hidden under the coat. he goes out and heads to work.

Gary lowers his head with a sigh, hearing a familiar whistling. He pushes himself off the wall and stops John before he goes any further. He lets out another sigh before speaking, "John, how many times are we going to have to go over this? You're far too loud, people are still asleep at this hour. Keep it down, will you?" and with that, Gary steps out of John's way and leans back on the wall. "Go on, then."

I stand in the office and look around. "This place is so plain..." I sigh and walk over to my terminal and type in some objectives for the day, one being going to check on the garden. I sit behind my desk and think about how to take on the day and how to avoid a few troubles along the way. After a few minutes of thinking, I stand up, walk to the door and exit the bland office.

As the Overseer passes Gary, he ruffles her hair a bit and chuckles lightly, "Hey there, Annika. How's the Vault?" He seems interested, but you know he's not. "Anything new?" Gary unfolds his arms and shifts his position on the wall, waiting for a response.

I groan and turn towards Gary. "How many times have I told you my name's Terra? I know you and my mom used to be or are friends...but that doesn't mean you can call me whatever..." I say quietly but calmly. I sigh and fix my hair a bit, before looking at him again. "There's nothing new that I know of right now...I was just about to check. Would you like to come with me?"

He shrugs and stands up straight, stretching. A series of pops are heard from his back and shoulders. "Sure, why not?" Looking around the corridor, he continues, "Not like I have anything better to do here anyways." Gary motions for her to go ahead of him, "Ladies first."

I walk ahead of him and walk towards the location of the Garden area. "I wanna check the garden first...maybe get some veggies for the cafeteria. They are running low..." I look back at Gary and keep walking.

"Right. How're the animals doing? Any radiation leaks? Are they b-" He hits Terra with a flurry of questions, hardly giving her any time to answer any of them. He eventually stops talking, but he seems like he expects you to answer every single one.

(Late post) "Sure of course Gary!" John says with a booming smile and a sweeping bow leading with his tool box. "Anything for the sleep and peace of our resident vault dwelling compatriots." He gave one or two shifty eye brow bounces as he made his way to a bench to eat first. A privilege to always being up so early he imagined. "Time for garden inspection anyway. My you could set you watch by that women..... But I Just What to start! A Flame In Your.." A tin struck the wall outside. "For the love of it all! Shut Up John!"

By the time his second question had left his mouth I was already lost in thought. All I could think about was the garden. The plants were easy to manage as were the animals...but the animals weren't always friendly. I shook my head, breaking my thought process, and opened my mouth to speak. "The animals are fine...and last time I checked, which was yesterday, there aren't any radiation leaks. You can check the rest on your own. As far as I know everything is in perfect condition." I replied calmly.

Gary looks at her as his smile fades. She obviously wasn't listening to him. "Any problem with the birds lately? They've been awfully loud." He looks at her with great concern. "You sure nothing's up?" You notice Gary has been fidgeting around with his hands nervously.

A sigh escapes me and I turn to face him, stopping us both in place. "Gary...being Overseer is stressful...I can't check everything myself. If there's something you know that you aren't telling me, then I'd appreciate it if you WOULD tell me about it. It would make our jobs a lot easier..." My blue eyes look tired and serious, and the bags under my eyes confirm that I haven't gotten any good sleep in the last few days.

Gary continues to fiddle with his hands, "N-No... Of course not. I was just asking... if anything was up. With the animals..." He lets out a deep sigh and looks at Terra. "It's just... they've been getting more aggressive lately. I was wondering if that were a side-effect of radiation or if there were something wrong with the food?" His voice is shaky and he's obviously concerned.

After leaving several amused people laughing and giggling over their meals, John took a strole up to the garden lighting. Each zone of plants required specific levels of light through the day. To mimic night time they turn off and the AC turns on. His heels clicking quickly on the ladder drew the annoyed looks of the birds above. "Evening ladies. I see you've already taken it upon yourselfs to check the gauges yourselfs but you know what a busy body little birdy I myself can be so if you wouldn't mind..." John said talking to the birds. Getting up on the rail he walked over to the switch boards and monitors and brought up their status. "I don't want to set the...." He started to sing to himself when a bird dove at his head. Ducking he looked around surprised. "Jesus! If you don't want to hear me sing you could have just said so. Looking down he could see Miss Overseer herself and Gary boy. Standing back up he took pause. Looking around him birds where circling. Inching over to the ladder he made for it. Birds doves on his pecking and nipping at his face. Covering himself with his arms he rocked back and forth to try and get them off him. Humming his song to keep calm and not panic. It was a long way down. Kicking his tool box by accident it came crashing to the garden floor.

I spin around to the sudden noise after being disinfected and run towards where the toolbox fell. "John, are you okay? What's going on?" I yelled looking up at the frenzy of birds and a barely calm John. "Hey Gary...I think your observation might be correct! Go check the radiation levels, if those are okay check the food, especially the bird's food!" I yell calmly, my eyes looking around and back at the birds quickly.

He nods quickly before spinning on his heels and rushing out of the room. About five minutes later, Gary returns. "Nothing's wrong with the food, and the radiation levels are fine. I don't know why they're acting so strange." He glances up at the situation with the birds and quickly makes his way up to John's level.

Without thinking, Gary rushes into the swarm of birds and grabs John by the arm. "Come on!" On the ground floor, he also grabs Terra and drags them both out of the garden.

I look back as the door closes and sigh. "Something has to be wrong...I need to figure out what quickly. If I don't then the whole Vault will be in danger...AND we didn't get any fruit or vegetables. We'll have to ration the food." I say urgently. 'Well...looks like more sleepless nights for me.' I think before turning to John and breathing a sigh of relief. "At least everyone is okay right now..."

"Alright, alright, alright. I can watch the garden for a few days to see what they're all up to, or to look for what's making them going insane." Gary's voice is worried and frantic. He goes to the viewing window, watching all the birds freaking out and squawking. "Maybe it's something in the garden? Maybe they've started eating an herb or something that makes them go absolutely nuts." He continues to stare out the window.

"...Or maybe its some type of animal or beast lurking in the gardens that's driving them into a panicked frenzy!" I start to freak out a bit but snap out of it quickly. "Thank you, Gary...that'd be nice...but grab some others on the Vault security squad or whatever and take turns watching and resting. If this is something big, I'm gonna need awake and alert people to help take care of it." I look through the viewing window and shudder.

John Started wrapping his arms. "Well I hope it's the radiation. I would hate to think even birds are as hostile to my good looks and cheerful demeanor as every one else here." He started to stand then thought better of it and slide back down against the rusted aging walls. "Well till then we can just introduce some sedatives into there food can't we? No need killing the confused things.

"I don't know. That might seem a bit extreme. We can get a few people to take shift watching the garden. Nobody gets in." He watches through the window as the birds begin to calm down a bit. "Damn well better not be radiation, either." Gary slides a nearby chair in front of the window and takes a seat. "I'm going to be here a while, so why don't you all get goin'?" He leans back in the chair and stares through the window.

John got up and left the big wigs to handle the important stuff. He didn't' really have a boss really. Heading back into the lounge he sorta expected to feel sorry for himself around others and get some attention. Maybe tell a tale of how he fought off the ravenous birds and saved both Gary and the Overseer. John had worked out most of the details when he noticed the lack of traffic today. "Of all the days to be productive." He hissed under his breath. More upset really at the fact he had lost the story in his head just then. "Can't be helped." He said to himself. Placing a wary guiding hand on the cool steel of the wall he closed his eyes and counted door ways till the sixth door down from the second left. Holding up his arm to the door activated it to open. Each Pip boy operated like a lock and password. That way Stealing was a rarity. Really if something went missing that was on you. After all, there is only one thief. Everyone else is just trying to get their stuff back. John smiled at the old joke his father told him and no dought he would pass on to his bastard son. Laying down on the cold steel floor of his room he felt it cool him down. It was way to hot to lay in his bed. After all, he couldn't see to well with the room spinning and all. Just needed to cool off and rest.
