You awake cold and stiff. The sunlight reaching into the small cave you found promises the day will get warmer, but the nights in the foothills are colder than your simple cotton and leather garmets provide comfort for. Thankfully nothing had come to claim the cave and you got the first good nights sleep since you left Dehenna. Though the waking up wasn't helping it much.


The small cave is near the end of the foothills and you can see a few possible passes up the mountains ahead of you. You know from your time as a blacksmith that there are some profitable mining operations in these mountains. There will be towns with those, but they are also owned by the Realm.


You also know that jackles wander these hills and mountains looking for escaped slaves like you. Despised by other slaves, jackles have a chance to earn their freedom by capturing ten escaped slaves.

Bit of background info and scene dressing. Give me a Per + awareness roll to check out the scene outside your little cave and feel free to stunt and take other actions.
 
Keldan groggily sits up and rubs at his eyes, shivering. Should've grabbed some warmer clothes. And maybe some food. At least he'd had time to grab a sword from his shop before fleeing the city, although hopefully he'd be able to avoid the jackals altogether.


Still adjusting to his newfound abilities, Keldan relaxes, feeling the Essence surrounding him. He focuses and channels it inwards; as it flows through him it seems to drive back the cold, making things, if not comfortable, at least somewhat less unpleasant. As this occurs, he is momentarily surprised as a bright glow surrounds him and marvels at the vibrant, shifting colors.


Well, that should help the jackals out a bit. Better not do that at night. Keldan moves to the mouth of the cave and takes a look around.

Activating Hardship-Surviving Mendicant Spirit for 10 motes and discovering I have an anima banner. Wheee!

The warm glow of your aura illuminates the cave and your caste mark seems to be glowing strongly enough to be a lantern. Outside of the cave you can see the game track you were following the night before leading back down the slope. There aren't any clear paths farther up that you can tell, but that is probably a good thing. Farther up are the frosted peaks that symbolize freedom. A group of peaks in particular attract your gaze. The five brothers. Makaro looks as proud as ever watching over the other four.


The peaks and names are memories of the past.


Go ahead and explicitly state how much of each type of essence you are spending. I'm somewhat assuming from your post that you are just using all peripheral essence. Also, HSMS isn't really necessary if you don't want it be using it, but it will certainly be useful for finding breakfast and such.
 
Okay, I should keep moving. Once I get high enough I can... Well, he'll figure that out when he gets there. Excelsior!


Keldan continues upwards, keeping an eye out for signs of something edible.
 
You move upwards roughly attempting to follow a course closer to the strangely familiar peaks. There isn't anything more than small game trails on the rocky slope, but you find a small cluster of scragely berry bushes and carefully pick out the ripe ones for some breakfast. They are tart and earthy, but they quiet your stomach and give you a burst of energy.

Per + Awareness, stunt if you like.
 
You hear the sound of something crunching through the brittle underbrush behind you. It sounds bipedal and as you turn you can see the shadow of someone who is trying to get the drop on you. You turned just in time to see the bola fly from his hand.

roll JB! You noticed the suprise attack he was trying to set up.
 
His attack comes at you with 2 suxx, dunno what your dodge DV is, but it is probably higher than 2? you should figure that out.

Keldan jumps out of the way, narrowly avoiding being entangled. Reaching for his sword, he moves forward and strikes at the jackal.

The man draws a sharp polished chopping sword with one hand and a tonfa with the other. He lashes at you with the sword.

Keldan knocks the blow aside. "Think I've got it figured out. Doesn't seem so hard after all," he says as he launches a riposte.

The man stumbles back a step as you cut a deep gash in his arm. He stares at your caste mark with a sudden flash of recognition and turns to run away.
 
give it a cha + presence roll and feel free to stunt. He is running scared at the moment. You've got 20 seconds or less before his crashing through the underbrush will drown you out.
 
"You fight to earn your freedom, but there is a better way. For generations, the Realm has subjugated our people, turning us against each other for the hope of earning a few scraps from their tables. If you join me, I promise you not only your freedom but the freedom of all in the Deshan. Will you stand with me and help drive the Realm from our land? Or will you stand against me?"

He stops, clutching his arm, and turns to you incredulous. "You want to free me, after..?"


He still looks afraid of you, but he isn't running. "They, they come after us if we don't come back often enough. You don't want me with you. I'll just bring trouble. Maybe if they come you just tell them I died, yeah?"

"You don't deserve freedom. You've worked against your own people, helping keep them under the Realm's control for your own self-interest." Keldan takes a step closer. "But I'm giving you a chance to redeem yourself. Work with me and you can earn your freedom by righting these wrongs that you've committed."
 
"Great, I can be slave to the dragons or to a crazy 'nathema."


"I'm already working to end my freedom. You think half those people down there would even know what to do with their freedom? They just take the drugs and do whatever people say. Not me, I figured it out. At least with the dragons I know when I get my freedom."
 
"I'm giving you a chance to save yourself, and do something good in the process." Keldan's anima banner begins to glow brightly. "Understand this: I will not stop until the Realm is gone from the North and our people are free. I am a hero of the dawn, the Chosen of the Unconquered Sun, and woe betide any who stand in my way. If you will not join me in righting the injustice that you yourself have helped inflict, then you will simply be the first casualty of this war."

What's the point of being a hero if you can't be overly dramatic about it?

Keldan smiles and sheathes his sword, then picks up the jackal's weapons. "Excellent! I think our first priority should be to put some more distance between us and Dehenna until we can gather some resources. What's your name?"
