[Legends of the North] [Elcivar & Jiskana] The Start of a Journey

The late afternoon sunlight flooded the valley with rays of color and skewed what was normally a dull gray green landscape into a vibrant painting. You could watch the shadows growing by the minute as the sun moved behind the mountain to your back.

The time to rest and explore your powers was over. Now they demanded to be tested. Creation's troubles were surely not waiting for you.

The valley emptied onto the Bayan uplands eventually. From there the path to Ikh Bayan was gently rolling and windswept. Rarely was there a shortage of work protecting travelers through the pass to Fella and its hospitals in the last few years. The peoples of the white desert are hardy and rough. Something more than seasonal troubles was causing this slow migration.

The setting sun would bring a frost. Though a month of summer was left, up here the winter never really left.

The cold isn't enough to trouble an exalt unless you run around without furs on.

The information you know from your past work. The pass from Ihk Bayan to Fella is generally pretty safe for an armed group and considered easy work for mercenary guards. Unarmed travelers sometimes have trouble with bandits and wildlife.

You have continued west over the southern black crag mountains from your manse. Feel free to take things in a different direction if you want.

Shaking himself free of his revery; Elcivar began descending towards the path. A lone traveler avoiding the known trails would raise more questions then he felt like answering. His long strides seemed to eagerly eat up the distance as his thoughts roamed farther abroad.

It would be best to touch base with the local population in order to find something to apply himself towards. He still remembered a few of the watering holes fondly from his days as a guard. His purpose would be far different these days when asking which trails were plagued with troubles and best avoided.

As his mind turned he continued to scan the horizon, ingrained habits asserting themselves. The wind flittering into his hood was refreshing and he enjoyed the times of year when he wasn't forced to keep the straps tied down.

If I'm reading where I'm at correctly, I think Fella is not very far away, and might be a good place for me to put out my feelers and make my first forays back into society.

As you descend, darkness quickly fills the valley. You estimate it will only take two days to reach the path at your current pace. Not having to wait on a baggage train makes things much quicker.

You hear some sounds up ahead. It sounds like the motion of animals grazing. They don't seem to have noticed you.

Perception + Awareness please

Fella is not too far away, to Fella!

At the presence of noise Elcivar comes to a stop. He takes a few moments to make sure his bow is accessible, and that no loose items will be making noise as he moves ahead. It's going to be time to set up for the night soon, and it'd be best to determine what lies up ahead before it surprises him in the night. If he's lucky he may even get dinner for this evening that isn't dried trail rations. Swinging slightly off to the side of the trail to keep downwind, Elcivar stalked slowly forward.

As you move through the growth the wind shifts briefly. Whatever is up ahead pauses its munching.

It knows something is out there, but it isn't running off yet. You don't think it has detected you specifically or your location.

In mechanics terms neither of you scored a success so we will continue rolling unless you want to change your action. Your stunt dice are used up, but feel free to stunt again, etc.

You reach a gap in the cover and can see ahead of you a small herd of cows grazing on the hillside. Wait, no, they aren't quite cows. Your eyes take a moment to adjust to the rapidly fading light. The one nearest you definitely has horns like a bull, but is scratching lichen off a rock with a hand and eating it. The rest are grazing nearby on hardy grasses. Despite the initial appearance they move more like a bent over biped than an actual cow.

The horned one seems to be watching the area as it eats, but it definitely hasn't noticed you creeping through the underbrush.

You can roll Int + Survival to see if you recognize the creature or know anything about it, if you want.

You remember a campfire story from an old tracker named Jessum you worked with once. He told how his friend was killed by a raging cow beast. They were on a fur trip.. a dangerous sport the ice weasles were, but the fur was worth it's weight in jade. Their group startled a herd of cow monsters. Demitaurs. The beasts scattered every which way. One of them trampled his friend an broke his sword clean in two. Another attacked and was put down. Yet a third they found impaled on a tree. Apparently it had tried to trample it... There was a punch line somewhere with that, but you can't seem to remember what it was.

After watching the creatures for a few minutes Elcivar began to slowly backtrack toward the path. Feeling confident they posed no imminent threat to travelers he decided it might be better to let sleeping cow beasts lie. Keeping a watchful eye out for a decent spot to spend the night, Elcivar strode on into the darkening night.

Cutting across a slope downwind from the herd you find a knarled pine that would offer both protection from the wind and keep you from rolling the rest of the way down in your sleep. A small furry creature skitters up the tree out of your way making chittering protestations. Around you the night noises start to pick up as the last rays of sunlight give out to darkness.

I don't want to assume your actions overmuch, feel free to move things along to morning in whatever way you see suitable, keep looking for a better place, or w/e.

Ducking under the branches of the gnarled tree; Elcivar settled in for a light sleep. With any luck he'd be up and moving with the morning sun, covering as much ground as possible tomorrow.

Morning comes as expected and you start making your way down the valley towards the road. It seems the demitaurs stayed in the upper end of the valley and your way is free of cow.

We'll do this in accellerated time unless something comes up because we don't really want to reinact LotR travel scenes right? Make a few rolls to see how it goes. Feel free to stunt things and describe your journey.

Int + Survival to pick a good trail and make good time

Per + Awareness to notice things

Dex + Stealth if you want to be sneaky, it'll slow you down some

Stam + Athletics if you want to run most/all of the way, it'll speed you up some

places to go, people to see.

After locating the path he'd been following previous Elcivar settled into a steady run. His feet found the ground as if they'd run this path every morning for years. His gaze followed the trail ahead, looking for signs of increased usage and finding branches when his current path strayed. His only stops were brief moments to survey the horizon for danger when breaching the small hilltops and winding valleys.

As your ground eating pace pulls you down the valley small deer and rabbits dart from your path. A giant eagle flies overhead as if wondering if you would make a good meal, but wheels off criss crossing the valley before disappearing over a ridge. You reach the foot of the valley as dusk is falling and pause on an outcropping overlooking the road. Below you can see tracks from travellers, but it seems any on the road tonight have already made camp. Fella lies but two days travel to the east. Your eyes pick out a small glow farther along that suggests the road isn't totally deserted.

Thinking that the warmth of a fire and a little conversation wouldn't go awry, Elcivar continues onwards into the deepening dusk towards the glow.

Roughly a mile down the road you can start to see more than just the glow a hundred yards or so back from the road. At first glance you can see tents and some movement.

As you walk up two men around from the fire turn to greet you... with daggers.

"Well now," a rough voice from behind you interjects, "Looks like you wandered into the wrong camp stranger."

A fourth man is eating some charred meat on the other side of the fire.

Elcivar continues to walk forwards towards the fire.

"Are you certain? This looks like the campfire I was walking towards." He pushed back his hood as he spoke, "Do you have any more food to share with a poor traveler?"

One of the men in front looks around to the man behind you, "Might," He grunts, "you have the coin for it?"

Scratching his chin in the light of the fire Elcivar addressed the man who spoke, "I can spare a few coin if your coffers are too bare to support one more for a meal." Resting two fingers on the haft of his bow he continued, "My skills normally keep food on the table."

"Oh, let off it Dirk. 'e ain't worth it." The man on the other side of the fire stands and offers you some of the charred meat. Looks like it was once a scrawny deer.

Dirk, apparently, grimaces and shoves his dagger back into its sheath roughly and feeds some more wood into the fire. The others move off to keep watch or take a piss.

The man by the fire offers you a rock. "Name's Curt, most all of 'em call me Curtains though." Dirk glowers at the two of you through the smoke.

Elcivar smiles warmly and accepts the overdone meat.

"Glad to meet you, name is Elcivar. It's been a stretch since I traveled in a caravan but I do miss a little conversation around the nighttime fire." Working hard to keep his face from showing his thoughts on the cooks technique, Elcivar continues. "Where are you traveling that has you so far from civilization, such as there is up here."
