Try shaping it off of the figure then sticking it on.

Do you have access to a toothpick or something like it?

I have a whole bag of tools for clay, so yes.

Great, so this works for any shape/type of clay.
Once you've shaped the piece take the toothpick and make a checkered pattern.
Do the same thing on the piece of clay you want to put it on.
Carefully put these two together, and push down.
You might have to hold it together for a little bit.
