If you were good enough, maybe Tony would still be alive.
—————————————
I’m home. Peter sighed, leaving Betty and Ned, and continued on his way out of the airport.

There stood Aunt May in a conversation with a parking officer, and he smiled, finally seeing something that would return his world to some version of normal. “May!” he called, hearing her exclaim “He’s here!” then watching her come running, calling back, “Don’t give me a ticket!” to the man. They collided in a hug.

“Oh, I’m so glad you’re okay,” May said as after a moment, they pulled apart. “No, for real, I’m good. I’m actually really... fine.” “Let’s go, where are your bags?” She looked at the space beside him and then made a ‘D’oh’ face when she remembered. “They got blown up.” “Yeah,” Peter returned sheepishly.

Together they walked towards the car; May said some things and Peter answered them while looking ahead — there was a shiny black car pulling up nearby, and someone exited it as they continued on the way to May’s red automobile. From where he stood, Peter couldn’t see the person’s face; they turned back around to tug something from the backseat.

Now they faced him, and he felt his breath hitch in his chest as he saw who was holding the gigantic golden ‘UNDEROOS’ sign.
“May.” He tapped the roof of the car to get her attention, half in a daze. After a second, she looked up, but he was already gone, racing toward the man, injuries forgotten. He didn’t even feel the EDITH glasses fall from where they sat on the collar of his shirt.

He leapt the final few feet into Tony Stark’s arms, making him drop the sign.

“Hey, Underoos.” He felt him hug back with one arm; the other was in a sling. “You’re real,” he said softly, still in disbelief; with everything that had to do with the Elementals and Mysterio, he‘d had to fight a phantom zombie Iron Man hologram and, he admitted to himself, had started to accept that Tony was really, really gone. He doubted Happy had known either, since the man had seemed so genuine about wanting to help Peter carry on Tony’s legacy.

“Of course I’m real. Why wouldn’t I be?” Tony patted him on the shoulder after Peter pried himself away from him. “Everyone thought you were dead. It’s been kinda hard without you.” “Oh. Yeah. About that... you cannot believe how tempted I am to blast AC/DC in front of everyone right now.” Peter half laughed. Embarrassingly, he felt tears welling in his eyes just looking at his mentor.

“You’re leaking. Don’t do that, you’re gonna waste your earth juice.”

Halting halfway through wiping his eyes, Peter gawked. “Mr. Stark, did you just say ‘earth juice’?”

“Maybe.”

“FRIDAY, did he just say ‘earth juice’?”

The AI played back a recording of what Tony had just said. “...waste your earth juice.” “It would seem like he did, Mr. Parker.”

Peter laughed, then choked on a sob, then heard Tony mutter something unintelligible before pulling him into a hug again. “It’s okay, kid. I’m here now, and I’m going to be the bane of your existence.” A pause. “I mean, apart from global warming, you managed to keep the earth safe. Without my help this time.”

Peter smiled into his shoulder and they managed to stay that way for a peaceful half minute before Tony spoke again, bringing back vague memories of a Stark Exposition and a little boy in an Iron Man costume. “Nice work, kid.”

Another pause, then Peter sniffed and said, “There are a bunch of reporters and photographers behind us, aren’t there.”

“Yeah.”

“Thought so.”

“Time to take your aunt’s car.”

“Wait, uh, really?”

“Yeah, why not. It’ll be fun. Now you get to learn how to hide from the paparazzi. You really are starting to take cues from the master.”

“Uh, okay, I guess...”

Peter hadn’t even finished his reluctant sentence before Tony pulled him over to May, ducking into the car.

And as he followed suit, Peter could finally accept the usually meaningless words.

Everything’s going to be okay.
