Basil could be best likened to a drill sergeant on the field, and that may not seem to be an ideal trait in a casual setting until one really considers how DISCIPLINED he really is. Hard work and determination are two very important factors in his life that keep him stimulated. Though he may be impatient, he is never flaky, and everything he does is to the best of his ability. AMBITIOUS, he strives to stay at the top of his game and wants to work towards something better in his life. Though currently his parents have football in mind, he doesn’t truly know what he wants yet. However, if one thing’s for certain, is that he will work tirelessly towards it. He is very PASSIONATE about not only sports and studies, but regarding his interests in general, and also has a habit of growing attached to people who impassion him in the things he loves to do. That being said, he is CHARISMATIC and meets peers easily, but doesn’t usually form lasting nor meaningful relationships. His excellence on both football and his academic pursuits comes from the way he is able to eloquently word himself and easily present his ideas. He is neither particularly introverted nor extroverted, but does make an effort to not sound like a bumbling idiot when addressing others professionally, seriously, or even from his heart. It may be hard to believe given how he treats other people sometimes, but Basil has a KINDHEARTED side of him that very rarely makes an appearance, and his true intentions will only become apparent to those he feels as though he can put his trust into wholly.

If there one thing Basil is known for, is his AGGRESSIVE nature towards everyone and everything, including friends, enemies, and unsuspecting passersby. Always on edge, it’s almost too easy to push his buttons and while he may not always get physical with a person, he has a sharp tongue that’s capable of coming up with a quick retort, and more often than not it’s either personal, belittling, or both. He’s RUTHLESS and rarely sugarcoats his words for anyone, raises his brow and smirks when he makes you cry, and perhaps this is the main reason as to why he’s such a successful athlete. Always looking down on even his peers, he’s also known to be extremely ARROGANT, what, with being the star quarterback and all with a hot girlfriend and heaps of rich, popular friends, it would make sense, right? Basil has a holier-than-thou presence about him that occasionally blinds him into thinking he’s better than other people, which is far from the truth and deep down, under that monstrous husk, he knows it all too well. His trust issues fuel him, and he is an incredibly INSECURE individual and keeps up the defensive and conceited act in order to boost whatever remains of his fragile ego, a means to keep himself distracted and focused on what’s in front of him. In reality, Basil is extremely REPRESSED, and he does everything in his power to keep his genuine emotions under lock and key because he greatly fears the backlash he will receive, especially from those he holds close to his heart.

STEPPING STONES
Basil is the product of two Ivy League graduates who came together to form a powerful duo. The union between Dutch Le and Kamila Andris could only mean a recipe for success, and that’s exactly what occurred between them. Both were second generation immigrants, who’s families hailed primarily from Vietnam and Lithuania and weren’t particularly well off, so it goes without say that they built their fortune up from the ground. Ambitious, cutthroat businesspeople who valued hard work and commitment above familial ties, Mr. and Mrs. Le spent their twenties and early thirties building their careers and fortune. Dutch became known as an incredibly successful urban designer and Kamila owned a high-end jewellery company that brought in more than they could chew cash wise. It was in their mid thirties when they decided to settle down and have a few children of their own, because they might as well have shaped a successful lineage as they readily had the means to do so. Basil and his sisters were born into the bustling metropolis of New York City, where he spent ten years of his life. His family eventually decided to move across the country to the West coast as their careers hit their peaks. While his parents continued working, their high positions made them capable of living in any part of the country and merely making commutes for business trips and important meetings. They decided to move to a city in Oregon, where his father designed an estate on an enormous plot of land for the family to live on.

HARBOR CONTROL
For lack of a better term, the Le children had an extremely privileged life growing up when it came to money. It was very apparent that finances would never be an issue for them, as with rich parents came rich children by extension. While their lives were characterized by their pompous upbringing, their family was anything but familial and resembled moreso a cold, barren pit of crushing expectations and a significant lack of love. To put it bluntly, Mr. and Mrs. Le should have never had children. Basil was the middle child, but there was little discrepancy between his and his sisters’ ages as he was about a year apart from each of them. Despite this, Basil was always expected to be the setting example for both of them as someone they could look up to and be protected by. From the outside, they were picture perfect, and appearances were always a crucial aspect they strived to maintain. Little was known to the outside world of their father’s ruthless agenda, but the toxic gender values he preached to his children would forever shape them as they grew well into their teenage years.

Throughout his childhood, Basil actually looked up to his father, despite all the hardships he would put him through. He was regularly beat as a child when he would let his grades slip, or perform less than ideally in the various sports he played, to name a few examples. His sisters would never receive the same treatment, but his father conditioned him into believing that was normal, that a man couldn’t be a bitch and had to deal with reinforcement that would toughen him up in the long run. His mother never had a say in anything, and was more preoccupied with his sisters who spent their lives humouring each other, watching the brother they only knew at face value from a figurative distance. This division between the men and women of the household made it so he’d never develop a fruitful relationship with his mother and sisters, and only ever had Dutch as his parental rolemodel. Eventually, Basil developed a hard shell that resembled his father in more ways than one — cold, competitive, merciless. He would grow to hate himself for the things he would do to other people in order to boost his own fleeting ego, but the more he did it, the more it would become the normal, and the further his emotions would be repressed.

As Basil grew older and started on the path of self-discovery, the admiration he had for his father developed into full-blown fear and aversion. The first time Basil ever got drunk was in middle school when him and some of his buddies decided to sneak alcohol from his parents’ liquor cabinet during one of their sleepovers. The next morning he woke up naked on the bathroom floor with no recollection of the night prior. The beating he received from his father the next day wasn’t anything compared to the rumours and pictures that would then circulate around school, stripping him of his dignity, making him feel as though the secret he’d been holding onto was outed to everyone when the f-slur started haunting him everywhere he went. He kept quiet, of course, in fear of his father ever finding out. Sexuality was something that wasn’t openly discussed in the Le household because neither Dutch nor Kamila believed it needed to be talked about as their outdated philosophy was very simple; homosexuality was immoral. The bullying was only brought to the attention of the school as well as his family the day he showed up to class following lunch break with a busted lip and broken, bloody nose. He swore he could see daggers in his father’s eyes when he saw the state of him. How could you let them do that to you? What kind of a man are you? He switched schools, and the bullying slowly but surely faded with time, but those events forever changed the way his father would look at him. Following his hospital visit and recovery, Dutch struck him so hard he was bedridden for an additional two days. To this day, he can’t look the man in the eye.

UNSTEADY BALANCE
In high school, Basil had no problems fitting in and, for the most part, was a wholly better experience than middle school. In fact, he was quick to grow in popularity. Money, looks, and athleticism meant fame among the throng of teenagers, and he had them all. Basil also got into the dating scene as soon as he realized girls started taking interest in him, and he had quite a few relationships before meeting the Prep. The only thing that would become his biggest hinderance throughout his teenage years were his festering insecurities and repressed sexuality, which, besides treating people as though they’re below him, he found himself alleviating through vigorous physical activity. He enrolled in various sports teams during freshman year but eventually found himself devoting his time to football, winning multiple plays against various schools in the district with his team and becoming known as Avon High’s star quarterback and captain of the football team. His family ideally wanted him going into business when it came time for university, but seeing as though he was so successful in football, they soon started looking into potential scholarships and programs for him to apply to as his high school career would come to a close.

Growing up, Circe listened on as her parents parents made grand plans for adventures they'd all go on once she was old enough, promising her an education of spiritualism and true artistic value. 10 was the age they'd chosen to be the minimal amount of education she needed to get by, and with every birthday that passed, every interest they supported with what little money they made as starving poets and buskers in a house they didn't own, their daughter grew more involved in their fantasising. It all sounded as if paradise was only a few short months away, which would narrowly save her from a life full of struggle and strife. Two years left. One. Seven months.

Then came her little brother. Circe, who'd always wanted a sibling to play with, was over the moon at the time. She couldn't have known how much her life was due to change. At the time of her mother's due date, their new lives had been delayed by two months, but Circe hardly noticed. Another member on their travels was bound to be a dream, and how lucky they'd be to spend every day a free spirit, she thought. But that wouldn't be the case. Two years passed, and while Circe wasn't as broken up about the unprecedented delays to their plans, her parents suffered in silence. At least they did, until one fateful day that their daughter came home only to find them with packed bags in the living room, her infant brother crying knowingly. As it turned out, her parents weren't as prepared to provide for a more substantial family on the road. But they weren't willing to give up their dreams either. With nothing more than a hug and kiss goodbye, her parents embarked on the first of many of their escapades, leaving them with a string of babysitters not much older than Circe. They were gone for six months before popping in like nothing had happened, with sacks of momentos and gifts to make up for their new arrangement. With a heavy heart, young Circe accepted her new lot in life, and continued smiling up until they left home again.

Eight years later, and Circe's on the back end of adulthood. Ewan's fate is the only thing on her mind, and her parents are just as absent as ever. Between working 12-hour shifts over the summer and preparing for the upcoming school year, she's also exploring legal routes to claim guardianship of her brother without his or their parents' knowledge, without jeopardizing their position and accidentally having him taken away by CP services.

Personality:

Basic: Pres is confident, charming and charismatic, easily able to get what he wants just by using his words. He’s smart, and makes a point to be sure everyone knows it. He isn’t, however, condescending or necessarily mean unless given a reason to be. He has an excellent poker face, and is a seasoned liar. He uses sarcasm as a form of defense, and isn’t afraid to cut someone down if they offend him. He has a wicked sense of humor, and is capable of saying the most ridiculous things with a straight face, much to his amusement.

Around his friends, he is kind, even a little (only a little. He’d kill me if I said otherwise) mushy. He’d do anything for those he cares about, even at his own expense. He is deeply introspective and has a lot of thoughts, questions and opinions that he’s too scared to voice for fear of ruining his reputation. He finds high school to be useless, fit only for drama.

Virtues:
Charming— Preston can be extremely kind—even sweet—when it suits him. If you don’t piss him off, this is a side of him you’ll get to see. He gives out compliments freely and will never speak badly of you once you’ve earned his friendship.
Charismatic— Pres has a way of words that makes anything he says believable. He can very easily convince people to do things to his own favor, and can sweet talk himself out of any tricky situation.
Intelligent— Preston is very smart, something he uses to his advantage very often. It’s hard to pull a fast one on him, and he’s always one step ahead.

Appearance: Preston is tall, standing at 6’1”, and well muscled from years of exercise. He is pale, despite time spent in the sun. He has straight, brown hair that he usually keeps short and well maintained, and has wide, blue/green eyes fringed by dark lashes. He has a few scars from accidents as a kid, the most prominent being across the lower part of his jaw and down his neck from a fishing accident when he was fifteen.

Backstory:

Growing up the son of the two richest people in town went exactly how you thought it would. He always had the best that money could buy, for as long as he could remember. He was spoiled, entitled and spared from the true horrors of the world, but he still turned out sort of alright. School was always difficult for him, despite how intelligent he is, and his parents constantly had to pay the school to maintain his good grades. They also had to bail him out of more than a few instances where he could have gotten in trouble with the police. Growing up he always felt the need to prove something—his dominance, his intelligence, anything really—leading him into getting into more than a few fights.
