Fantasy Khorys

Circus, a Warlord is basically a Drill Sergeant, yelling soldiers into competence. There's obviously going to be some overlap in ability, but it should stack, and rest assured there will be no overlap in flavor.

Speaking of which, while I really, really like the ideas behind them @Icerex , and the quotes are an awesome touch, your abilities feel more in line in a turn-based strategy game than a real-time MMO where there's no real definitive distinction between combat and non-combat time, so "start of combat" is not really an applicable term. Just a change in wording, is all. The abilities themselves look cool. Tactician and Commander's Strike look especially awesome.

Just figured Icerex could use the passive ability for something else. Stacking works in a real game because there are numerical stats but since this is story based, it seems redundant. A double boost to attack could be written the same as a single boost, at least from my perspective.

@ARSENIC Yeah, I was thinking about that. My intent was for "start of battle" to mean before say, a boss fight or dungeon raid. I have a feeling that this will turn out more like a D&D party than your regular MMO, making it more instance based. And yes, the quotes are pretty awesome. I was able to find one that general fit with each ability, which is pretty cool. I love that book.

Lordy we have a great team. I'm thankful for all of you! I should have thought to message or tag people to alert everyone to the update I made in the character sign-up section. This is a failure on my part with ignorance to all the cool things this site/forum can do. Thanks for the support all. :3 I'm learning this system slowly but surely. Old dog, new tricks, all that.

@Silsa, @Icerex, and @WolfOfProphecys the abilities look great! I'm particularly excited to have some DPS for our archer with the poison shot. That'll be handy dandy. And the Phoenix. . .that's gonna be sweet. I'm looking forward to seeing that in action!

Also it makes me way happier than it should to see the nachos making an appearance in the IC posts.

I still think replacing "X number of times per combat" with an actual cooldown would sound more organic, but that's just my two pennies.

The whole 'encounter' concept in 4e bothered me. Wasn't my biggest gripe with the system, but it bothered me.

The Nachomancy is strong within this one, young Corgi.

Sorry for the lateness, finished my abilities. For some reason I didn't get any notifications until recently. Tried to nail a versatile wizard without making things too op.

Nachomancy is always, always going to be funny to me. I tried to explain it to a non-nerd friend yesterday though, and it just didn't work. I had to explain how I got to writing about nachos, then what an RP was, then what a necromancer was. . . I gave up in the end. But I still think it's hilarious.

As I said before, if you need to tweak your abilities with cool downs or whatever else that's fine. You can do that later in the story. The idea with the Preface is to give us a chance to gel a little and find our groove. Fighting this ice golem will give everyone a chance to test the waters a little.

@Chisengen, no worries about being a little late. We're still waiting to see @SleepiestBear7's ability sheet and IC post. And dude. . . you're a wizard. You arrive precisely when you mean to, right? ^_~

Trying to find a good picture for what I imagine Carter to look like in-game. Closest I can find is this, but without the guns.

@Circus Here you go, buddy. Had some free time on my hand so, my version of the Bard. Feel free to change whichever parts you don't like.

You can replace the "Inspirational Ballad" in your first piece with the Cappricio ability and use these from here on.

Passive: Vibrato

As the battle changes, so too does the tune. Whenever a Bard uses a non-ultimate ability, he creates an additional, instant effect dependent on the ability.

The Bard's first Vibrato when his instrument is drawn, and every third Vibrato after, becomes an Overture, increasing its effectiveness.

Ability: Allegro

The Bard's tune instills a great urgency upon the field. Allies benefit from increased move speed, attack speed, and reduced casting times and enemies become distracted and frazzled, reducing accuracy and dodge chance. As the Bard grows in power, the strength of his song increases.

Vibrato: The Bard selects one ally and grants them a significant buff to cooldown reduction for a short duration. As the Bard grows in power, the duration and strength of the buff increases. An Overture also instantly refreshes the cooldown of the target's last-used non-ultimate ability.

Ability: Pianissimo

The Bard's tune brings about a deep serenity. Sources of non-magical light are dimmed as the area is engulfed in a darkening aura. Allies gain increased resistance to negative mental effects such as charm, fear and control, and bonuses to concentration checks, as their minds are made clear, and enemies become slow and sluggish as they are lulled weakness, reducing their move speed, attack speed and increasing casting time. As the Bard grows in power, the strength of his song increases.

Vibrato: The Bard selects one enemy and compels it to fall asleep, interrupting its action and causing it to collapse to the floor for a duration. Attacking it instantly wakes it up. As the Bard grows in power, he is able to affect stronger enemies with this ability. An Overture affects all valid targets in a cone-shaped area in front of the Bard, instead of a single target.

Ability: Staccato

The Bard's tune creates a sharp harshness. Enemies in the area are assaulted by the sound, which creates an aura of sonic damage around the Bard, inflicting damage for as long as they remain in the area. In addition, the same sharp vibrations that clash with his enemies cause the Bard's allies' bodies to rapidly regenerate, slowly healing them over time. As the Bard grows in power, the strength of his song increases.

Vibrato: The Bard's weapon is infused magical power, causing his next attack to inflict bonus sonic damage. An Overture also causes the sonic blast to have a powerful knockback effect.

Ability: Capriccio

The Bard's tune becomes a ballad of heroic triumphs. His allies are inspired to greatness, increasing attack power, both physical and magical, and gain increased resistance to negative physical effects such as exhaustion, roots and poison. Enemies are intimidated by the strength of the Bard's conviction, reducing their resistance to negative mental effects inflicted by his party. As the Bard grows in power, the strength of his song increases.

Vibrato: The Bard singles out one ally as the hero of his song, giving them a massive surge of movement speed for a very short duration. An Overture compounds this with a dramatic increase athletic and acrobatic ability, allowing the target to perform otherwise impossible deeds, jumping incredible distances or prying apart steel bars. As the Bard grows in power, the buff allows for even more superhuman abilities.

Ultimate: Magnum Opus

The Bard plays a piece so moving, so powerful, and so impassioned, that his enemies are compelled to stop and listen in fascinated awe, stunning all enemies around the Bard for the duration of the piece. Unlike the sleep effect, the fascination does not stop if the target is attacked, and allies are able to freely attack stunned enemies without fear of retaliation. Much like the sleep effect, however, if an enemy is too much stronger than the Bard, it will be able to resist the effect.

Things are shaping up well with the golem fight. With monsters like him feel free to keep doing what you are doing, trapping him and writing him moving and trying to hit you and shrieking and all that good stuff. My intent for him is to give the adventurers a taste of the danger they are now in, so if a few people take some damage that would be nice, but ultimately kill the frosty bugger.

I'll work on getting a post up this weekend to help steer things along, and I'm trying to leave an opening for our dwarven battle priest to make an entrance. Cut me a little slack though, as I'm not sure when I'll be able to check on things for a day or two. I'm moving to a new place, so the Hubs and I will have our hands full for a bit dealing with that. And my poor doggie is stressed beyond measure. D: I can't convince him he's not being left behind. He'll figure it out.

Guys, who's next post, cause I'd hate to be the person who crowds the thread with too many posts. ( O.o )

I can have a post up sometime today.

@ARSENIC Thanks for the ideas! I like the Vibrato ability. I will work them into my character as they progress.

Whew, I just got internet at my new place and got caught up reading the posts. Nice writing you lot. Cheers @Circus for your bard taking a hit but also dealing a great blow to the golem's knee! I'll wait for you to post, @Icerex, before doing anything. I think our ice golem has served his purpose. Somebody turn him to powder and finish him off. :3

The Oracle is going to be ticked that she'll have to repeat herself. It seems like most of the group was (understandably) way too busy realizing they had been sent into the game to care about her reasons for why she'd brought them there.

Also, no news yet from our dwarven healer. I say we plow ahead without him and if he chooses to make an appearance later I'll write him in.

And don't worry, there will be tougher baddies to defeat later. This ice golem is our story warm-up.

It'd be good to hear from our fighter, @Bills352. :)

Also good would be our archer, @WolfOfProphecys, or wizard, @Chisengen.

Then follow the warlord's orders and kill the golem. :D Then back to story time with the Oracle, hooray!

Or just kill the golem, that's cool too. Want to give people a chance to reply but also need to keep the story moving. ^^

I was going to, but it seems to have just been the 3 of us for a bit. Maybe time to boot them and call some of the back-ups soon? I get the feeling a lot of the interest will fade if we wait too long.

Edit: Roger that. Proceeding to eat the golem's face. Post up soon.

Posted. It's dead, but the icicle spell resolved, making it easy for anyone we need to boot to have their character skewered into a lovely, chilled human kebab.

Going to wait until tomorrow to post and see if anyone else replies. Will try to keep things open ended. Preface will close soon. Want to breeze through the plot recap with the Oracle and get everybody set up in their new home: the Keep. Then on to questing!

Alright, the preface is complete! Feel free to write the gnomes, just keep them loyal little Oracle minions who live to serve. The Keep will be our base of operations, essentially. I will get a post together to begin Act 1: Relic Hunters on Monday. In the meantime I've updated information about the Keep in the Overview section.

Y'all need to own up and make up an excuse if you're quitting. Don't leave the rest of us hanging if you want to leave.
