Fantasy Kaizoic: Earth Reborn

“I’m a light sleeper, and yeah.” The brunette man patted Kairo’s blanket covered shoulder. “We can eat first though. Cräga’s cooking eggs.
I’m gonna bathe too. You’re right.

Like shit.” He smirked and started to leave the room.

“Pfffft. Good idea.” He said, smacking his lips afterwards. He got off the bed, opened the window for a bit of fresh air, the morning air was dewy and sharp. It made him reminisce about gum. In the distance he could barely see the roofs of the buildings in Drafisl, dotting along the tree line like some kind of odd growth. For as short of a time that he was at Drafisl, he’d definitely found himself growing fond of the place and it’s people. There was absolutely no doubt in his mind that he would miss it.

He sighed to himself, walking towards the bag filled with supplies. Since they were leaving soon, it might be a good idea for him to start gearing up. He hadn’t tried on any of the new equipment yet, except for the vanguards, so it might be a good idea to see how he’d look with the stuff on. He started with the chest plate, the vanguards, the steel toed boots, and then finally the jacket. There was no mirror in the room, but he still figured that the stuff probably looked pretty good on him. It helped raise his spirits up a bit on this otherwise stressful day.

With everything ready, he grabbed his bag and made his way downstairs.

Rufus had already entered the back room for his bath, and Cräga was serving the aforementioned eggs to a pair of Vindav morning hunters.
They were scrambled inside their cracked open, football sized shells and bore mixed peppers in their steamy golden glory.

Kairo could practically smell the food the moment he exited his room. The aroma of the eggs instantly making his stomache grumble. If he stayed in this inn any longer, there would be no doubt that he'd grow fat as hell.

When kairo finally caught a glimpse of the aforementioned eggs, his eyes widened like saucers. That...that was NOT an egg. There was no way in hell an egg could be that big. Something like that could probably feed a whole family for a week.

"Damn." Kairo whistled, as he approched the bar and Cräga. "Gotta get myself some of that."

Cräga smiled briefly.
“Sorry, those were the only two they brought.” She said apologetically. “They came from a Pavem in case you wanted to get your own.”

The Vindav were busy devouring the steamy innards of their acquired bounty with only their nostrils used for breath.

“Awwwwwww.” Kairo moaned defeatedly. Curse those two Vindav and their egg, getting him hungry like that.
“Is there anything for breakfast then?” Kairo asked curiously.

“I got some fruiting yurunga plants in the back if you want one.” She shrugged. “Almost all that’s cooked here is what’s brought in by whoever killed it.”

“Mmmm. I’ll ask Bom if I can find someone who needs a Pavem driven out of their house then.” Kairo said, plopping himself on the bar stool. “Some fruit would be great. If you could get some for Rufus too.”

Cräga chuckled.
“A Pavem is almost 20 feet long and 10 feet tall, Kairo.” She shook her head with another chuckle. A warm sound that would not be expected from the same woman that scathed against he and Rufus a few days prior.
”I’ll go get a few.” She tapped the counter and retreated to the back.

"Oh..." Kairo mumbled to himself. Cräga's explanation made sense, considering the sheer size of that egg. Blood rushed to his cheeks as he began to realize that something like that could have been realized through common sense, if only he had any of that present at the moment. He laughed a bit at himself, chalking up that momentary lapse of judgement to the fact that he'd just woken up.

He waited patiently for the food, nails tapping on the table to give him something to do while he waited for his food. Besides that, he also tried to listen into what the Vindav talked about. Admittedly a little weird, but he didn't have much else to do at the moment.

Cräga returned with a trio of ripe, green fruit that looked like a mix between a coconut and a bundle of grapes. Three kiwi-sized shelled buds hung from a wooden twig.

“Just peel off the shell and don’t eat the rind.” She explained as she set down the yurangas. “Bitter and tough.”

Kairo took a quick look at the fruit, picking one of them off the branch with a bit of force. The shell was tough, but not tough enough for him to peel. With a bit of effort, he found that he had removed enough of the shell to get a sizeable bite out of the fruit. That was exactly what he did, crunching into the yuranga and savouring the flavour.

"Mmmmmmm." He mumbled, eyes closed in enjoyment. One thing he was learning to enjoy about this new era was the amazing new food he'd never experienced before. "Cräga, you're the best." he added, holding up the fruit.

“Oh take it down a notch.” She rolled her eyes. “You’re just hungry.”

Splashes from behind a nearby wall reminded Kairo of Rufus’s current, and necessary, bath.

“Yeah. And who’s been feeding me the whole time I was here?” Kairo argued, before peeling a bit more of the shell from the yuranga’s.

“Technically me, but I don’t hunt the meat or farm the crops.” She shrugged. “For the Poynca you can thank Tarlim, I just cook it.”

From the nearby Vindav, amidst their conversation in their own language, Kairo would overhear the word ‘Irokai’ and the name ‘Vincent’ in their statements.

“You’re gonna have to teach me a bit of his language first then.” Kairo said with a slight chuckle. He did expect Cräga to not be the best at receiving a compliment. That was fine though, the woman knew that he was grateful, and that was enough. How she wanted to take that information was for her to decide. He looked back down at the fruit he’d been peeling. The yuranga fruit was now completely shellless, the meat inside glistening in all its juicy glory. He took another bite, savouring the flavour.

His enjoyment though, would be impeded by a few stray words coming from the inn. Vincent? Irokai? Maybe someone had seen Darrek and Kairo’s exchange with the man yesterday? That probably wasn’t good if the whole town knew what kind of money he had.

Maybe it would be good that they’d be leaving right about now. Otherwise he felt it’d be pretty inevitable that he’d be mugged somewhere on these streets.

He continued chomping down on the yuranga fruit, listening into the Vindav’s conversation to see if he could get anything else out of it. Besides that, it gave him something to do while he waited for Rufus.

“Not the teaching type, I’m afraid.” She returned to her daily routine of cleaning behind the counter and organizing the bottled drinks.

The door opened and Cräga’s golden-haired sister entered with a foot-dragging drowsiness.

“Mokil.” She greeted to the two Vindav, and they nodded to her with their mouths full of egg.

Crina approached the counter and sat next to Kairo with a quiet yawn. “Morning, Kairo.” She greeted. Her hair was in wild strands that admittedly gave her a cute tomboyish look.

“Harvest done?” Cräga asked from beneath the counter.

“Yeah . . . Been grinding herbs since midnight.” Crina stretched again. “Why do they harvest them that early?”

“Because that’s when the dew starts to collect on the leaves and it ripens them in a way.” The older sister answered .

Kairo perked up a bit as Cräga mentioned that her little sister had showed up. He turned to face her, his arm propped on the table to lazily support his head. Kairo was definitely a bit surprised to see the state that she'd come back in. The wild hair, and the tired eyes. Clearly she'd been busy. It seemed like everyone was getting a bit roughed up nowadays.

When she finally stated why she was as tired as she was, Kairo couldn't help but cringe a little. "Sounds like buckets of fun." Kairo admitted, plucking one more of the yuranga's off the twig. "I'll have to admit, if preparing for the festival is like this for everyone, than I bet people would be too tired to celebrate." He added, passing Crina the de-twigged yuranga. "fruit?"

“Thanks.” Crina smiled and began peeling the hard-shelled fruit. “But between the visiting Vindav and Kendians, they’ll be celebrating enough to make up for the rest of us.” She chuckled tiredly.

“Go get some sleep, Crina.” Cräga emerged from below with a concerned expression. “I’ll talk to Gira about letting you take a break tonight.”

“Take a break....wait you mean you aren’t done yet? Rough.” Kairo said, adding a whistle at the end. The idea of working at midnight everyday sounded, well, absolutely fucking terrible.

“But besides that, I think you might wanna know that me and Roof’ll be leaving soon.”

“Awww no, really? I was starting to like having more humans around.” Crina pouted her lip. “Where are you guys going to?”

“Back to that fishing village West . . . Right?” Cräga eyed Kairo warily.

Crina cocked her head. “There’s fishing out West?”

“Apparently.” Cräga answered quickly.

“The wh-“ Kairo blurted out, before seeing Cräga’s wary eyes directed at him. Why was she looking at him like th-OOOOOOOH!

“Yeah! It’s in the west. I’ve been feeling kind of home sick recently.” Kairo said, dawning his best poker face. Hopefully Crina didn’t catch up on his little slip up there. Even if he found it rather odd considering everyone else already knew. He looked at Cräga, secretly eyeing her for permission to let his secret loose.

“Well let’s hope if you ever visit again, you don’t bring trouble with you.” Cräga said cryptically.

A splash came from the back.
“Hey, there a towel or something back here?” Rufus shouted.

“Hey, we didn’t bring trouble this time, we aren’t going to bring trouble next time either.” Kairo said, tone serious. He needed to say that for himself as well, he had no clue what would happen the next time they meet. He turned back to face Crina. “But I’ll definitely miss you and Darrek and everyone else while I’-“

The sound of Rufus’s voice cut him off, causing Kairo to roll his eyes. “Sorry, give me a sec.” He replied, turning to face the sound of Rufus’s voice. “USE YOUR SHIRT!”

“Screw off, Kairo! It’s my only one.” Rufus blurted back as the sounds of wet feet slapped against the floor.

“By the window.” Cräga advised. “There’s a dry cloth you can use.”

Crina looked at her sister. “So they’re going to be leaving too?” She asked sadly.

Cräga eyed her. “What do you mean ‘too’? Who else is leaving?”
