Inmate at a Louisiana state prison, serving 4 years of a life sentence for 3 counts of 2nd degree murder.


Declared missing and presumed dead 4 years ago. The prime suspect in his murder investigation was his Drummer. After his "death" (no body, no murder) his songs became worth a small fortune which has been converted into a recording business - backed by the mob. They are branching out into music videos.


Personality and interests


Ben is selfless and level-headed, and not prone to anger or impatience. He's also Bi-polar, with moods swinging between extraordinary motivation and crippling depression. He has a strong sense of justice, but is also cynical that meaningful change will come.


No change here. People just believed him dead. Do not be surprised when he is accused of a publicity stunt costing GCPD money.


Background


Born in New Orleans to a poor family, Ben graduated with no job, and little hope. He channeled his frustration into music, scraping a living in the New Orleans Blues scene as a guitarist and singer. He tried to stay away from crime, but his young drummer dragged him into a it. Ben was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison without parole after a conflict left his drummer and two others dead.


In prison, Ben learned the two men who died in the fight were members of the Crips gang. After receiving multiple death threats, he was forced to join the Bloods, or risk being killed. He received his tattoo as part of his initiation - to his dismay - celebrating his murders. Popular among both his new peers and the prison guards, Ben was able to survive without much trouble. Nonetheless, he was shocked by the system, and developed a motivation to make a difference in the violent culture, both inside and outside of prisons.


His background is very similar except that he made a moved to Gotham in to jump start his career several years ago. At the time Gotham was starting to make a comeback. Just as his career was starting to take off, he went missing, the only evidence of his demise blood in his apartment. In this life he never went to prison, never joined a gang. (Of course he remembers having done so...)

She had wealthy parents that worked in a tech firm that developed gear for law enforcement and counterterrorism. More than a few of the patents were in her father’s name. Much of their efforts were concentrated in CSI and surveillance. As something of a perk, most detectives were amicable toward Alaska. She also expressed a keen interest in CSI forensics. While no police department in their right mind would let her near a morgue, she was allowed to learn some of the ins and outs about ballistics, crime scene analysis, chain of custody, surveillance technology, fingerprinting, facial recognition software and the like. Alaska’s other “hobbies” included volunteer work at the library, a local animal shelter in her free time and tutoring primary school children.





This version of her parents never had good relations with the police. If anything it was just the opposite. In fact, she has a rap sheet - B & E and petty theft.


Personality and interests


Alaska is a sweet kind person compared to the stereotypical bitchy rich girl like most people would think of. She will care for everyone even if they don't ask for it. She doesn't do it for money or glory, she does it because she cares for everyone. She became a social pariah in school largely because of her association with police. She was accused of being a narc and the reputation has never worn off. She's reclusive around children her own age and most people bully her at school.





Background:


She has always grew up in the hectic city of New York and knows everything from heart. Her parents, though loving, were always away working. She lived most of her life with her nanny which has always kept looking after her or in a boarding school. She was allowed her to buy a pet puppy - despite her father’s allergy to fur - and no matter what it has always been her only friend.





Alaska’s life took a turn for the worst - the very worst - when her father murdered her mother six years ago by tampering with the family car. He was also accused of treason - selling technology to the Chinese. Her mother uncovered the plot and apparently planned to bring the matter to the authorities, but was killed before she could meet them. The charges of treason could never be proven. But the charge of murder stuck.


Alaska was also in the car at the time (not that Alaska remembers any of this) and was thrown clear of the vehicle before it exploded.


Alaska was remanded to the custody of the State and placed in an orphanage. However she ran away within a few months and has lived on the streets ever since. She was picked up several times, but after age 13 she all but vanished.

@Geek with Me , looks like you may have misread the Overview. There's no such place as Gotham in the real world. How could she have grown up there? These are people from our mundane Earth suddenly dropped into the fictional city of Gotham, into lives they may not even recognize. For that sort of background the character is a little over the top, not that I don't like it. I CAN work with it. But just understand the Alaska she may wake up as may have a life that is a living hell. Her memories will be her own though. She just may not know who have the people in her new life are.

Still having trouble developing the Gotham based background for any other one than the one I described. Her original is simply too unrealistic to bend to any of the others.

I agree slightly with the unrealistic part, but I'll try to explain why. For one, in middle and high schools, wealth will net you friendships regardless of character. Perhaps I'm grossly wrong in my judgement, but in general, teens - especially in middle school - view things like new clothes and jewelry as a big positive in terms of social status. There might be something significant in terms of appearance - such as disfigurement, disability, baldness, a scar, or a birthmark - to better justify the kind of isolation Alaska experienced. Being a rich snob is generally only frowned upon starting in college, in my humble opinion.


There also isn't much reason to kill off her parents. A divorce leading to her being juggled around and ending up in her Aunt's custody is far more realistic in modern times. If you feel strongly that they must be slaughtered ruthlessly for the narrative to work, then a more meaningful justification than a car crash is necessary. Was there an accident caused by neglect of some sort? Or a murder planned because of her father's involvement in criminal investigation?


As for not being able to write in a Gotham backstory, I think that's pretty easy. Slap the rich girl in the ghetto and make her parents the corrupt landlords. That'd be fun. Try being just and giving and charitable when you're hated because your parents are literally extorting money out of the local community. Poor girl is liable to be kidnapped while handing out food in a soup kitchen. And then beat the kidnappers half to death with her superpowers. Fun.

I usually do a better job with a reply. Really rough day of work yesterday. Got maybe 3-4 hours sleep and had to get up and drive all night. 14 hour work day. I was simply too ragged to explain myself well.


@Cervance So you know, part of my conversation with her has been via PM. I have an excellent background and powerset for her. But it really alters her parents beyond recognition. Before I go with that I wanted to mull over a background that would use what she came up with better.


Also, the scene with Starlyn Johnson is an adventure seed for you. No,she does not have a singer's voice. She's just a bit of a fan of your music. She is also a bit of a femme fatale. In fact ... doh, wait ... I can't tell you about that. It would be a spoiler. One way or another everyone's path is likely to cross hers eventually. She is one of the few canon characters - though not in DC comics. Rather she was one of the most powerful characters in the Champions Universe. I just altered her origin story a bit (make that a lot).


I will be deleting all these non character posts once we get the character done. I have more time today and am half awake.

And I have rewritten the character offline to be a little more realistic for her origins. Now to add in new background and powers. Trust me, I have good intentions (or evil ones, but still good - as this is an origin story).
