    overview.

ampires have always existed— they hid themselves, operating underground. Most people did not believe in them, thinking they were just mythical creatures that were the subject of horror media. They'd mostly survive off animal blood, but they'd occasionally snatch a human or steal from a blood bank. Combined with their near-immortality, it was a difficult, miserable existence. They were better than this. They deserved more. How could they let humans run the world? They were weak. Fragile. They were beneath them.

Small cells of vampires collaborated for the first time and a large network formed. They planned for years. It was the ones in Chicago that figured it out. They were going to take out their biggest weakness, the one thing that could kill them more easily than anything else— sunshine.

Five years ago, they succeeded. The Dark allowed vampires to come out of hiding. The takeover was quick; humans couldn't compete with the vampires' abilities. Now, the entire world is different. However, the vampires are merciful. They have no plans to drive humans to extinction, of course, that would eliminate their food supply. Humans were forced to the lowest rungs of society. Their purpose was to serve the vampires now, whether it was by forcibly donating their blood or providing their labor. It didn't matter what your societal status was before the takeover, they were now all equal. They were all at the lowest rung of society.

There are a few, however, who refuse to accept this. An underground group has formed with the intention of bringing back sunlight— and more importantly, bringing down the vampires. The group was originally formed by an experienced vampire hunter, one who knew about vampires long before they came out of hiding. Rob McCartney was his name. Unfortunately, he died two years ago, but the group lives on without him. They are based out of a Catholic church, one of the few places vampires have not been able to step foot in since their takeover.

The group has been working with a few vampires who have for one reason or another, decided the current regime needed to go down. They've learned that the vampires managed to black out the sun with some form of dark magic. Witches had died out years ago during the various witch hunts in history, so it is still unclear how they managed this. If they can manage to reverse the magic, they know they can take the world back from the monsters that stole it from them.

Ooooh! Very intrested in the historian. would symbols and holy items of any religious tradition be able to repel vampires? would individuals only be able to weild items of their own faith for protection? or do only more orthodox sects repel vampirism?

Now I'm imagining a Muslim reciting Ayat al-Kursi to repel vampires, lol.
