  Maze people, what is their opinion on humans?: Despite her position and her roommate's issue with humans, Callia doesn't really have any issues or disagreements towards them. Other than her finding them occasionally annoying, as when they show up it means she actually has to do her job, she loves her job truly, but it can be so tedious having to roar sometimes you know? Plus, it's kind of hard to get the smell of a human wetting themselves or worse in fear out of the living space when there's not good airflow. However, some do make a good occasional snack, the more iron filled ones that is.

  If Kyoko would walk straight towards you, most people would be compelled to step aside and bow their heads. That's usually the smart move, because he's gotten so used to people moving when he walks by, that he runs into people when they don't move. He has become intimidating, now that he's quite tall and muscular, has broad shoulders and a very menacing death glare. Towering at a staggering 6'3", he's usually dressed far too serious for the occasion, which doesn't make him seem anymore kind, but since learning of the joy that is sweatpants, he comes off a little less deadly. His clothing style is overly formal and he mainly wears dark colors - dark blue and black, usually. His intimidating looks are mostly grounded though, as Kyo is the kind of person who started carrying a knife as a teenager (in case of fist fights) and never stopped doing so because he’s paranoid that people are trying to hurt him. However, the fact that he's intimidating doesn't really mean he looks (what we would perceive as) "manly".
  
  His dark hair is quite long, reaching over his shoulders, and he usually wears it in a ponytail or braid. He also wears quite a lot of golden accessories, like multiple rings and bracelets, earrings and a necklace. He doesn’t have a beard, nor does he have any clear scars that stand out, making his dark brown eyes the thing about his face that attracts the most attention, though people usually wouldn’t dare to look him in the eye. He doesn't have much fashion sense, but he does always try to look respectable, so he makes sure to take care of himself - and he lets his brother and parents do the shopping. This results in him at least looking like a somewhat respectable adult.   Kyo's voice is akin to Jason Todd from literally any piece of media he’s ever been in. His voice is rough and gruff, in a constant state of morning voice, and has a very sarcastic undertone to it. His voice gets higher when he’s embarrassed or ashamed, which happens rarely so his voice tends to stay deep most of the time.   People make way when Kyo walks by, for he radiates 'don't fuck with me'-energy. When he walks in, you immediately realize that he's in charge, and he likes it that way. He isn't a man of many words, so he makes sure everything he does say is loud and clear - his clear, booming, deep voice is very helpful here. He tends to present his opinion like one would do with very obvious facts: like whoever dares to disagree is just stupid. Because of this, he can be very pretentious, but also very persuasive, although he usually has to rely on intimidation rather than just plain charisma to get what he wants. This works out most of the time, but when it doesn't, this can really piss off Kyo, who's far too stubborn for his own good.
  
  While he isn't extraordinarily intelligent, he's pretty good at pretending he is, since he has a very sharp memory and knows a lot of fancy words. The people he's close with know he does have a more loose, humoristic side, but they also know very well not to get on his bad side. If you bring him harm, he will go out of his way to ruin your name and salt your fields. He is quite patient though, which makes him all the more dangerous if he's planning to take revenge - or just planning anything, in general. However, if someone harms the things he cares about right in front of him, or threatens or taunts him, all logic goes flying out of the window and he'll resort to physical violence and screaming.
  
  Ironically, threatening and taunting people are things he often does himself, especially when it comes to his twin brother Nozomi. He often tells people his darling brother is a lovely and kind person, because he knows Nozomi hates it when he does this: Nozomi is very insecure about his masculinity and sees any sign of warm, kind emotions or displays of affection as things that threaten that. Kyo also has the nasty tendency to start rumors and gather secrets he can use to blackmail people, while presenting himself as a man who has no secrets. However, he obviously does. He's desperately trying to cover up the fact that he's planning to not share the inheritance of his parents’ wealth and that he's prepared to violently double-cross Nozomi, since his brother obviously isn’t very willing to give up his own share. Ever since that thought crossed his mind, he's gotten nervous and quite paranoid around Nozomi, because he is afraid that his brother, who can read him quite well, knows he is up to something.
  
  While he deeply fears being powerless, he's also afraid of how having power is changing him. He knows he isn't a kind and warm person, and he never pretends to be, but he does fear losing humanity and ideals, and forgetting why he wanted this amount of power in the first place. While he does believe he's serving a great cause - bringing peace and order to the world - and wants to believe that serving a good cause is enough to make him a good person, he knows deep down that the man he's become is far from good-aligned, and he hates it. He desperately wants to be a hero - to make the weak, invisible and repressed parts of society happy and make them feel strong and seen - and he wants to believe that seizing power so he can make a difference is the best thing he could do, but he's becoming aware that he's a villain instead, and it's tearing him apart.
  
  While he is putting on a fearless, dauntless persona, he is actually a very anxious - paranoid - person and a chronic worrier. In Kyo's mind, things can never just be alright: there’s always some threat lurking. Usually, the perceived threat is another human being, especially the people he spends a lot of time with. Since he is close to them, he feels more vulnerable when he’s with them and feels like they could harm him. Because of this, he tends to keep people at a distance and tries to give them as little personal information about him as possible, believing that anything and everything could be used against him. This can make him seem like a very cold, distant person, who’s very hard to talk to. He is also afraid of walking the streets alone at night, and of the dark in general (and he doesn’t sleep well because of it), for he is generally afraid of being jumped - which is why he tends to look over his shoulder a lot. He thinks that if murder is on his mind, it could be on anyone’s and he could very well be the target. Besides that, he is afraid of being physically overpowered by someone, despite having a lot of physical strength. This causes him to work out a lot, even on his days off - working out being the closest thing to a hobby he still has.
  
  Kyoko is a bit of a control freak. He likes to plan things way in advance and usually keeps checking to see how things are going, because this gives him a feeling of being in control, and a feeling of power is basically the only thing that reassures him. That also means that he has a tendency to - internally - panic when things do go sideways, which would likely lead to increasingly desperate attempts to get back in control. He puts no trust in others and sincerely believes that he is the only person who can solve problems. While this can make him responsible - if he says he is going to do something, you can rest assured that he will - it also makes him a very dominant, intolerant person who doesn’t leave room for discussions and certainly will not listen to the reasoning of someone who’s disagreeing with him.   Kyoko was born and raised in the large, cold house his parents owned, far from nearest city of his home state. He had a very sheltered, privileged youth there, with his parents being the CEO’s of a large, very much capitalistic company. They took turns caring for their little rascals, Kyoko and his twin brother Nozomi, to make sure they did get enough attention from their parents. This attention, it turns out, was the source of many problems that formed later in Kyoko's life. The one moment that seemed the smallest, but had the biggest impact on his life, was when the twins, then seven, saw the news, which was reporting violent riots elsewhere in the world as a result of poverty. The sound of people screaming and yelling for justice and safety and the images of the riot he saw on the television that evening, were forever ingrained into his mind and have haunted him for years. Kyoko, who couldn’t understand why all those people would be so incredibly upset, asked his mom about the things he saw later that night. His mom replied it was because those people were too weak to change their own circumstances, and were crying out for a leader to make a change for them.
  
  She then told him the story of the king who loved wisdom: there once was a great and just king, and his subjects loved him. That’s why they gathered all the knowledge of the world in one large library, as a gift for his fiftieth birthday. The king, who loved knowledge, was overjoyed, but also devastated: he wanted to know everything, but because he was getting older, there was no way he would be able to read everything before his death. He then asked his advisors to summarize everything, so it would fit in one bookcase. By the time the advisers pulled this off, years and years had passed, and the king had become too old to read the entire bookcase, and asked his advisors to summarize it into one shelf, then one book, one chapter, one page. When the advisors came to deliver the page, the king had become too old, and his eyesight had become too poor to even read that. He then asked them if they could summarize it into something short and simple, something he could share with his people to thank them for the wisdom they gave him, one sentence of ten two-letter words. They did, and the king shared this wisdom with the world: “If it is to be, it is up to me”.
  
  Kyoko took these words to heart, with the well-meaning sincerity of a child, and decided that if he wanted the people to stop being angry, he had to fix that himself, instead of asking for somebody else to do that for him - like the weak did, in his opinion. This motivated him to try to become stronger, since he had always been the smaller, weaker twin. Nozomi had always been stronger and taller than him, had a louder voice and had always had the upper hand when they did anything as a kid. While he loved his brother a lot, he resented the feeling of being powerless, and became obsessed with the ideal of destroying this feeling for everyone, forever. He started spending even more time with Nozomi, in the hope that this would make him stronger, and together they would drive their parents insane.
  
  For the first ten years of the twins’ lives, the family was never really complete, as the parents took turns working. While Kyo would’ve loved to have more family diners with the four of them, his parents often told him how important their job was - they were leaders and leaders, Kyoko knew, made people happy. Kyoko believed they served a just and righteous cause, that they were basically heroes and begrudgingly accepted the fact that he would have wouldn’t get one of his mother’s bedtime stories every night. Things changed when his parents made a very successful partnership, which took some of the pressure of running a large company and the workload of profiting off the less well-off, giving them more time to and spend with their family; like vacations to their vacation home in the lovely, lovely little small town of Springtown.   When the twins were 14, something rather… unfortunate happened. It was June and the family had just finished unpacking for a long stay in a remote little village, when the news of a young girl’s disappearance became known - followed by the curious incident of finding not her, but her twin sister. Naturally, both of Kyoko's parents were spooked (after all, they had twins, and imagine something happening to one of their little boys) and probably threw a tantrum at the doorsteps of several local Important people. They did not leave, initially, though: capitalists at heart, both Jin and Meiki wholeheartedly believed they could guarantee the safety of their children by throwing lots of money at the problem, desperately trying to ensure that nothing could ruin their summer break quality time. And so Kyoko and Nozomi spend a summer in a town filled with mystery - and maybe stuck their nose into it when their parents weren’t looking, because it’s not like they didn’t hear what happened and both of them grew up having a hero complex. While they had no real personal connection with the Kurosaki twins, they were very intrigued by the mystery of it all. It’s cold, yes, but Kyo and his brother have always been a little messed up and tend to see other people as plot hooks in their own story, not as actual people with actual lives. They like the idea of being the center of attention, not caring for the actual lives that were lost.
  
  When money unfortunately didn’t make the problem go away, and more children started disappearing, Jin and Meiki decided not to come back to such a dangerous place, opting to spend summer in luxurious beach resorts for the years that followed. This was also around the time that the first cracks in the relationship between Kyoko and Nozomi started to appear. High school is hell, after all, especially if you aren’t used to talking to a lot of people your age. As teenagers tend to do, both brothers tried to strengthen their own popularity by sacrificing someone else’s. It was very easy to dunk on their twin, as they basically knew everything about each other, having spent the first fifteen years of their lives as a team. They started spreading rumors about each other to sound cooler themselves, which resulted in more and more fights. In a couple years, their bond was basically broken. This is the main cause of Kyoko's fear of letting people truly know him: Nozomi was his closest friend in the world, but betrayed his trust by using the secrets Kyoko had entrusted him with against him.   While Nozomi went to business school, Kyoko joined the military at age seventeen, looking for the strength he felt he lacked. In the few years prior, the main thing people - caused by Nozomi - mocked him for, was his physical strength, often resulting in actual fights, as a lot of teenagers wanted to prove that they were stronger than the others. In these fights, Kyoko was basically a punching bag, which resulted in him being mocked for being a loser. Consequently, Kyoko felt weak, which fueled him with rage and made him decide to join the army. His physical strength is one of his biggest insecurities, even now, despite the fact that his military training has actually made him stronger than the average person. Kyoko feels like he can never be strong enough, never be powerful enough, because he is afraid that if he stops working on this, he’ll become the weak one again.
  
  In his short time in the military, Kyoko thrived. He realized how good it felt when people listened to him without question, and started to try to find more and more ways to make people obey him, resorting to blackmail and violence. He quickly rose to the top of his division, but this wasn’t enough for Kyoko. While he was physically stronger than his brother now, he feared that Nozomi could still make him feel weak again. The thought that his brother, who had always been the stronger one, would one day disagree with his views and directly oppose him scared him, so about a year ago, he decided he wouldn’t take the risk of Nozomi getting in his way. He got the idea that Nozomi, who was halfway through his degree in economics and took after their parents, working his way up in the company, would try to fully take over the company and claim the entire inheritance after his parents died, leaving Kyoko with nothing. Terribly afraid - paranoid - of being backstabbed this way (since they did backstab each other a lot as teenagers), Kyoko decided that he should make the first move. The plan he devised was not one a sane person would think to do to their family: Kyoko decided that the quickest way to ensure the inheritance would be all his, was to kill his parents and pin this on his brother. He has been incredibly nervous around Nozomi ever since.
  
  Such plans would never come to fruition. War was but a harbinger of death, and upon being deployed for his second year of combat, Kyoko suffered a nasty blow-- a shot to the knee that shattered the lower half of his leg and broke his spine in three places. Not long after, he was medically discharged from the army for his physical injuries. In the years after being discharged, he walks with a slight limp in his gait- it's nothing compared to the scars that run along his midsection and lower back. College at nineteen was but another way Kyoko used to cope, following the steps of his brother to pursue a business degree. Springtown became a safe space for Kyo, and ultimately, his home for the next four or so years of his degree.
  
  Kyoko has become a very broken person. While he got a lot of attention from his parents during his childhood, this usually wasn’t all that affectionate attention. Kyoko's family valued results over intentions and reason over emotions, personal gain over empathy. As a result, Kyo has never learned how to properly express himself or to really help someone. He still clings to the belief that leadership is always a thing that brings positive change.
  
  Kyo still thinks about the images of the riot he saw, the yelling he heard, and the story his mother told him. He truly believes himself to be the person who can maintain peace. He truly believes that if he wants to become powerful and make it so nobody else should have to feel powerless, he has to make sure that happens himself, and the same goes for a lot of other things he does. If he isn’t sure his orders are carried out exactly the way he’d want it to, he’d rather do it himself. However, he has noticed how cold and how ruthless he’s become, and it scares him. While Nozomi doesn’t really show that his brother’s distant attitude is hurting him, Kyoko knows his twin cares about him, and he cares about him as well. To him, the idea that he’s prepared to hurt his entire family to achieve his goals is a clear sign that he’s not the good-aligned hero he wants to be, but he tells himself heroes sometimes have to sacrifice the things they love for the greater good. If he’d kill his family and get the inheritance, he would gain power and if he gained power, he could become someone who guides and protects the weak, while being strong himself. Her targets are indiscriminate with no particular favorites but her tricks are harmless for the most part. Whether this is due to her own weird sense of benevolence or a pact she had made from a time long past, no one truly knows. However, as long as you are a citizen of the maze or one of the supernaturals, she will not purposefully bring any physical harm to them. For humans, however, this imposed rule does not apply and many have been a victim of her cruel and vicious nature.​

  It is often wise not to take Fox's words at face value— there is always a chance that she is lying for her own amusement, tricking you into doing something she wants you to do, or simply wants to speak in such a roundabout way to confuse people.   Unlike recent foxkin who had come to be in their humanoid form, Fox had started her life out as a regular fox. She spent her time within the wilderness, catching prey when she could and hiding from predators. Unfortunate as it was, the young fox would eventually be hunted— a group of humans and their loyal mutts came towards their burrow and hunted down whatever moved. The fox had been caught and grazed by an arrow. The wound was deep but she had survived enough to run away while the hunters collected the rest of her family. The mutts were on her track, her blood smeared against the area, but the fox continued to run and flee. Nothing else mattered aside from her survival.​
  ​
  The Fox would often pause at this point in the story. Then she would speak about a being— almost ethereal and divine— saving her from the hunters. The divine being had slaughtered the group of hunters and cared for the fox until she was well enough to eat. By then, the being had harvested the livers of the hunters and offered one to the young fox.​

  "Feed on this, my child," she urged and why would the fox refuse a gift from their benevolent savior?​

  The fox had awakened the latent illusionary magic within her and had gained her humanoid form from there. Loyal to her savior, Fox had begun learning the ways of being a foxkin and served the being for a century. During this time, the Fox had earned her second tail whereupon she had become good enough in illusion magic that the being had decided that she could strike out on her own.​

  Between her freedom and her arrival to what would eventually be known as the Maze, Fox had gained four more tails; however, no one had ever heard the story of what had happened for her to gain these. She seems to always skim over this part of her life. From the bits and pieces of her story before the Maze, it could be speculated that Fox had traveled and learned more about the world while keeping up her diet of human liver by luring them into vulnerable positions.​

  The Fox had come upon the Maze and its group before it was erected. It was a safe haven of sorts— somehow striking a perfect balance despite everyone's different natures. But once again, the Fox met the formidable foe that took the form of humans and brought with them a promise of destruction. They had retaliated and erected the Maze in response, hiding themselves from the cruel gaze of humanity. In exchange for a name she could not remember nor utter and her illusion magic, the Fox was allowed to stay within the safe haven and feast upon those foolish enough to enter the maze.​

  The Fox kept to her word. Most breaches into the Maze were orchestrated by the Fox to gather victims for her meals, and those who stumbled inside outside of her plan were swiftly dealt with. The community surrounding the Maze had allowed the Fox to grow beyond their solitary nature. Though it might not appear like it, she had become endeared to the area and its inhabitants— gladly going along with the binding promise despite the other party having long since passed.​

  Two humans stumbled into the community which caught the Fox by surprise. Perhaps it was due to her ever relaxing vigilance born out of very few incidents or maybe those two humans were simply extremely lucky but they had managed to come into contact with the others in the community. Of course, the Fox was more than happy to clean up her mistakes. In a twist of fate, one of them had pleaded to be spared and one of the elves had vouched for the man.​

  "Then let us make a deal," the Fox said as she extended her hand to the human and his cowering brother. "When you die, you will allow me to lay claim to your liver as payment."​

  The man accepted with little hesitation. And just like that, the Fox was appeased.​

  She observed these humans. The man who made the deal with her had integrated and endeared himself into the community. His charm had bewitched the elf; though, the Fox supposed there was no magic involved. Humans were incapable of that nor was he lying to claim power. He simply loved her and she loved him back. And perhaps, just perhaps, the Fox could acknowledge that there was a good side to humanity. The one that could co-exist with the supernatural world without hunting them to extinction.​

  The other one— the brother— was as foul-mouthed as the other was kind. Clearly, he hated every single moment he spent within the Maze. He pleaded so desperately with his brother to leave it all behind, to return to their home beyond the Maze. His incessant whining was grating to the Fox's ears and she was tempted to end his life multiple times over the months he was there but was bound to her oath. And finally, he had left. Lucky for him, his brother once again vouched for his release.​

  The Fox came to regret this decision. While that foul-mouthed man could not touch the community, he did not leave without scarring it. The Fox saw this young man out and watched her beloved hedge maze ablaze— taking with it the protection she had tended to for centuries. That was the day the Fox had first placed a curse and a vendetta upon a human. Through grueling work between her and the others, the hedge maze had been saved but the brother had escaped. The Fox made multiple attempts to take revenge but the man was clever enough to never be alone or come at night. She would never risk discovery after all, but she was more than happy to allow people to see him as delusional. It was a small consolation.​

  Regrettably, the human had passed away from old age. At the very least, he could say he had lived a good and happy life. The Fox claimed his liver shortly after, providing her condolences to his family, but she paid respects which was more than what was expected of her.​

She lived in peace and harmony with her kin until their secrecy was shattered when the light elves, driven by territorial ambitions, invaded the dark elves' sanctuary. Overwhelmed by sheer numbers, most dark elves were mercilessly slaughtered. Mahina, being small and unable to escape, faced an uncertain fate.
  
  However, her fate took a surprising turn when she was taken in by the leader of the light elves. • Backstory

  Juniper was born in Springtown, four years after her brother, Andie, who was quickly attached to his baby sister. As soon as Juniper was aware of the world she, too, was attached in a similar way to her brother. Almost idolizing the older boy.
  
  Her parents loved the two of them dearly, though Junie's mother wasn't particularly present because work always took her away from them. Being surrounded by masculine influences had Junie become a bit of a tomboy. She loved to catch bugs, climb trees, play dinosaurs, and terrorize the other girls in her cul-de-sac.
  
  She had always been mischievous, having a tendency to play pranks or spread rumors. She was the kid who lied about seeing a ghost, or spread rumors— Not out of maliciousness but because she actually believed it at that age and just loved everything fantasy or supernatural.
  
  Late during her elementary years, a video game came out that became hugely popular in her brother's school. He, of course, played it, and as Juniper was prone to do, she begged him to let her play, too.
  
  The game wasn't very special; you could kill or tame animals, go on quests, and any other average fantasy game thing, but what set it apart was how incredibly diverse and free it was. Any number of races, creatures, and events were happening, with the promise of a player-driven world affected by them, at their fingertips.
  
  The two siblings loved to play together, her brother inviting her to the guild he and his friends had started. He helped her get all the things she wanted, and she got a taste for collecting animals. But, of course, fame dies out, and kids lose interest in things. Her brother's interest had dwindled off... but Juniper had fallen in love with the game.
  
  It had made her fall in love with dragons and fairies and any sort of creature she could find. In fact, it sparked a deeper interest in animals altogether. She changed her brother's guild into her own little beast-taming one, and even then, it got quite big.
  
  She spent her days skimming through articles on wildlife and collecting more animals in the game. Even as middle and high school came and passed by, it seemed to be all-consuming. She started working at a local shelter as she turned 18 and became obsessed with the creature figurines the game had steadily been releasing.
  
  It felt like ever since she had been introduced to that damn game, she had found her calling in life, and what she was going to be in her future. A Veterinarian— particularly a Zoo Vet, though that was up in the air because it was damn hard to get the Job.
