Interest Check: Legend of the Five Rings

Just remember that you will die.
It's not a matter of preparing for it. You're going to die. Probably in an embarrassing way. So don't do like I did and get attached to your character.
Everytime I play L5R and expect to die, I end up living.

My Ronin is a Nodachi Swinging Hulk-Smasher.

He might be a Monkey.

He might be something else /entirely/. Which would require much DM Pming, and a fake backstory for ya'll.

I just want to Moto.

Playing Mount and Blade: Warband has made this want very strong.

It is so funny that I have no idea of what you are talking about. I bought a storytellers book for L5R as well as the basic book, but all these "types" of classes are so strange to me.

Well. Okay.

At the basic level, you have- Shugenja, Bushi, Monks, and Courtiers- these each have numerous Schools, that have different bonuses and effects and abilitites- somewhat like classes.

Then you have the definition of your family- which also determines your options, for schools, I might add.

Ronin are Clan-Less.

They're sort of shorthand for the many character archetypes you have, since every bushi school, for instance, is closer to a way of life than an actual martial art. Cranes, for instance, are weaker in straight-up combat but emphasise getting initiative and being good at iaijutsu duels. Crabs, on the other hand, can wear heavy armor with fewer penalties and focus on resilience and endurance, since they may have to hold out against overwhelming numbers without support until backup arrives.

Same goes for the other basic character types. Shugenja are more than spellcasters, they're shamans who can speak directly to the fundamental forces of existence. Monks are the people who abandon the trappings of society to achieve enlightenment through higher understanding. Each clan has their own variations on those, and each clan also produces their own specialists who don't fit into the categories mentioned above.

It can be complex, but I think we can help guide you through it.

There are only three basic classes in L5R:

- Shugenja - Shaman Mages (who are freakin' awesome)

- Courtiers - The Talkers (meh.)

- Bushi - Warriors (kinda okay, but not Shugenja)

The Ronin they were talking about are basically characters without any links to a family or clan, which is a HUGE deal in L5R.

topkek

As long as you live in society, the people who can manipulate it are king. ;)
...Moto Rola?
Moto Saikel?

Moto Carr?

:D
I've tried using Rola before...didn't fly.

I'd rather talk to the spirits, they're much more interesting ^^

As a note, looking to stretch my magical muscles a little more, so volunteering for squishy Shugenja duty. Not sure about the clan or family yet.

And who can forget Mirumoto Takezo (Musashi)? :D

I'm actually kind of tempted to run a grimdark L5R game influenced heavily by Bearers of Jade and Dark Heresy and Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay.

Oh, also, what era is this taking place in? I'm hoping either Age of Exploration or Clan Wars...I love second city so much, but I also love the scorpion coup, D: I CANT DECIDE WHICH I LOVE MOST
Moto Genghis!
...I kid. Those sound suitably Mongolian.
Well, female Moto. I could use Khutulun, however...
I could help with Chinese names, god knows I get enough exposure with all the period dramas my mom watches.
Sadly I am not Utaku/Shinjo enough for a Chinese name. I might try looking at Turkish names, however.
