SilverFlight SilverFlight Haha, yes.

Yeah, that's perfect, I am glad you are doing that, I sort of got the gist of it when I read your opening. I am having a think of what I could suggest for those in the tarantula clans (am I getting the right idea?) magic. As 'old world' tarantula venom is rather potent, then maybe could incorporate some sort of potion making? I had a really fleeting idea just a min ago, but I've literally just forgotten, RIP.

How sweet, honey bees are amazing. I'd love to know more when you're ready!!

Also, shall I begin with creating them now or wait until you've created a character sheet etc. Sorry if I am too much, first role-play in a while and I get excited over the smallest of things.
Make as much Lore as you like for your tarantulas, the only thing I might regulate is the magic potency and maybe some small details for story purposes. The clans are centered around this diverse metropolis at the edge of the forest, which exists both above ground and below it. But your char could also be a traveller, with their clan far away etc. It's pretty open.

Brilliant. Will get to work on some ideas then. Right now I am ATTEMPTING to design them, for the reference.

That's very interesting!! Same with me and tarantulas, haha. But yeah, that's amazing... Just a random question then, will your honeybee character be(e) working with a hive? What would there be regards to their defense especially their sting? I am super curious as I know there will be some action once everything is established!!

Also, what is your favourite species of bee and why? Haha.

My character will be part of a hive, a young bee just out of nursery duty, it will be one of her first flights from the hive at the start of the thread. The hive defenses consist of guard warriors with spear and shields at the front entrance, and archers. Their spear tips and arrow heads are coated in apitoxin, or bee venom, which they can collect safely if they are careful.

My favourite species (genus rather) of bee has got to be the honey bee. They are the only species group who has such a remarkably large and complex hive, and a massive array of social behaviours we are just now learning about. Apis mellifera, the European honey bee, is my fav among that group.

I also picked a spider! It's a platycryptus undatus (jumping spider) from a nomadic tribe!

Oh no, how could I say species instead of genus...! But to be honest, I wasn't sure if it was the same with bees, as it is with tarantulas, so I guess I learnt something new haha.

That's interesting info, I didn't know that honey bee venom is called an apitoxin, plus that is such a great idea
What information were you thinking to be included in the character sheets?

Hazmat44 Hazmat44 that's so cool, I love jumpers they are so inquisitive and actually look intelligent in rl...

I am so tied up with many choices now... On one hand I am all for some edgy things wasp or mantis, but from my experience with insect RP, they tend to be over picked anyway... So, I might picked something else, maybe carpenter bee or robber fly.

I'll create a lore page seperate from the character sheets, and you can write as much as you want. That's where you can define the type of magic your clan specializes in, their goods and trade items, special customs, beliefs, relations with other clans etc.

A wasp would be so cool!

...But would probably not get along well with a bee.

Wasps are predatory, so they compete more with spiders, but they do like honey too. Idk how that would go. But solitary bees are fantastic. Robber flies are actually specialist insect predators and some eat bees.

Maybe they get into the same dynamic as carnivore/herbivore in Zootopia... I mean they are civilized, sapient insect, so preying on fellow intelligent folks is probably gonna be a thing of the long gone past, right? But probably still facing prejudice and other complicate stuff.

Actually, aphids and certain other small insects are 'livestock', so i don't know if the issue would persist.

Is male bee (both colony and solitary) as viable as female in this setting? Like I know they have such a sad, short life irl and most die after mating, but that wouldn’t translate well to a sapient insect setting, right?

I have it so they live more like humans, they live years, and no, the males live to be fathers. In my honeybee lore though the drones will be sort of like consorts, there will be several married to the queen. The drones are more the cultural pillars of the society, they don't fight or forage but they write, paint and chronicle.

Just to let everyone know, I have written down some notes on Google Docs ready to be pasted on the lore page.

SilverFlight SilverFlight , I would love your approval on some of the things I've suggested, so do you mind me DMing you the link for you to take a look?

Sorry I keep posting questions, but how many characters would we be allowed to have? I have a couple of ideas, which I may have some trouble choosing between.

I might join as some species of firefly. Or something else if I get another idea. ^-^

This is certainly the place to ask questions. No need to apologize. I'll permit one for the first couple of weeks, when we have a stable number of people I may allow more characters per person.

I'm heavily leaning towards playing an Orchid mantis, Hymenopus coronatus. As for lore, still kind of up in the air. But magic-wise...really leaning towards plant manipulation. Nothing drastic, but more like magically encouraging flowers to bloom sooner and ensuring healthy plantlife; they wouldn't just be taking care of orchids but rather other types of flowers and herbs. Perhaps even have an apothecary sort of set up. And maybe have a heavy alliance with the honey bees; food in exchange for protection against predators perhaps?
