The Blind Idiot God
Ink Bleeds

Basic Setting: 20XX, Fictional city of Ravenglen

Premise: The city of Ravenglen, despites its seemingly rural name, holds a population of over 900,000. Among those are most notably the Rider family, a group of teenaged orphans who dominate the overly active night scene of the city which, coincidentally, happens to be its main touristic attraction. Through this, the Riders have reached a sort of emblematic stardom bordering on being the figureheads of the city. Their names, their story, all are known by the people of Ravenglen and those who care to dwell into its recent past.

However, recently, five years ago in fact, they have vanished from the map. Gone into relative obscurity after the mysterious death of their oldest sibling, Rex Rider, their position at the top of the city has been taken by a group of individuals who call themselves "The Kings".

In truth: Rex Rider - the oldest of the Rider siblings - and his close friend Alic Morgan, created five years ago an unusual substance known as "The Ink" which allowed, through its application, the bestowal of supernatural abilities. To the Rider family (for unknown reasons as even they themselves are unaware of their ancestry), this served as a catalyst allowing them to access capabilities which were already their own, but to others, it is the source of of power otherwise unaccessible.

The problem is that, unless you are a Rider yourself, in Alic's words; "This shit will kill you."

You see, like any other tattoo - which is the most common application for "The Ink" - the marks left by "The Ink" fade with time, and the life force of the bearer with it. The only way to prevent corrosion and eventual death, thus, is to renew the mark by getting more of it printed upon you. The issue with that is that the three ingredients necessary are quite difficult to get a hold of; A special ink generated by a particularly rare breed of octopus, the leaves of an herb exclusive to Ravenglen's forests which only grows at the very start of autumn, and the blood of a member of the Rider family.

Of course, Rex and Alic didn't create this ink just for kicks; but it had become a necessity to protect themselves and their friends and family from those who would target them to steal the spotlight from the Riders. Not that Rex would not have simply given it away; he never asked to be the King of the city... but a title like that wasn't something you can just give away.

The ink was thus a means to this end and for a while, it worked... until that fateful night five years ago.

Now, the other Rider siblings are forced into hiding and Alic is bound to his tattoo shop, forced to watch helplessly as his friends are plucked out of existence one by one. But the really terrifying thing is that "The Ink" has started showing up again... and Alic had nothing to do with it.

This is a war between the Riders and what remains of their allies, who fight for survival, and the Kings, who must hunt them down or die out as their ink - and powers - fade away. Who will come out on top?

I would like to start this RP on the night that Rex Rider was killed those five years prior to the actual start of the RP. It would be a sort of "supposed to lose" scenario for the Rider side of the conflict and would flesh out the background to the events that occur during the rest of the RP. As the mod of the RP, I would like to entertain the roles of Rex (who will die shortly after the start of the RP and will serve as an idea of how badass characters can expect to become as the RP progresses) and Alic (who will function as a sort of mentor for the Riders and their allies).

There are a few other cool things I'd like to integrate to this RP but for now... what are your thoughts on this idea?

So now that I have a bit of interest, I'll develop on the idea a bit more;

The types of powers which can be acquired through "THE INK".

1. Energy:
Energy-based powers essentially boil down to powers akin to those you would see in Shounen anime/manga like Dragon Ball Z or Naruto. Energy beams, Energy fields, Auras, Flight, and things of the like. The coloration and appearance of the energy are dependent on the color of ink used for the tattoo itself. So a blue fireball tattoo would allow for blue energy blasts which are flame-like in appearance.

2. Ability Enhancing: Enhances certain aspects of the individual to superhuman levels such as endurance, strength, speed, reflexes, etc.

3. Summoning: A tattoo which allows a "carry on" bonus to be used at any time. This can go from an additional trait like wings, claws, or fang, to a weapon, to a minion.

4. Transcendence: A tattoo which essentially functions as a "boost" to the effects of other tattoos via a "superior form". It is complementary and thus, essentially useless when possessed alone.

Limitations of "THE INK".

1. Fading:
Tattoos, no matter how well you take care of them, fade with time. So too do their effects. The more well-maintained a tattoo, the more efficient it is. Additionally, if a tattoo fades out to the point where it becomes colorless, this will result in the death of the wearer as the tattoo utilizes the life force of the wearer to maintain itself. An "Ink" tattoo generally fades to the point of uselessness (and lethality) within 5 years, but this is an estimate and is somewhat case by case.

2. Pain: If you think getting a regular tattoo is bad, don't even think of getting "The Ink". It directly interacts with your neural system so, regardless where you're getting tattooed, it essentially feels like every millimeter of your skin is being pierced with a tattoo needle simultaneously... over and over again until the tattoo's completion. Which brings us to the third limitation...

3. Physical limit: There is a limit to how many tattoos a person can wear, as - once again - they drain your very life force and are extremely painful. Anything beyond 3 is a risk to your sanity, and its considered madness to even attempt anything over 5, which is considered the "lethal dosage" of The Ink.

4. Practice: Your body and mind need to get accustomed to your tattoos, so newer tattoos can take a while to reach their full potential. Some tattoos will even fade out before they can reach their peak.

5. Spread: The tattoos all acquire their power through the same source, which is your life force. The thinner you spread out your life force, the weaker your tattoos' abilities will be. Also, when more than one tattoo are on the same person, the largest will take "life force priority" over the others. This allows you to somewhat switch around the scale of your powers.

5.5. Math: To ensure everyone is balanced, I will establish a "power scale". Essentially, the less tattoos you have, the stronger your tattoos can be. So everyone will have 10 points which they can spread over their tattoos, with the number of tattoos going between 1 and 5. 4 and 5 will be allowed an extra single point conditional to the character suffering from some kind of insanity.

How to avoid death by "THE INK"

1. Renew the Tattoo:
You can avoid the fading of your tattoo by getting tattooed again, using the ink. The upside is that the pain is much more bearable since the neural connection has already been made. The downside is that, as stated, "the ink" is kinda hard to make and not every tattoo artist can actually mix it, let alone use it in their designs.

2. Injure other Ink Bearers: Through fighting other bearers of the ink, you can prolong your life and renew your tattoos to an extent (though not as much so as with more ink). The more you injure them, the more effective this is, but nothing will renew your tattoo as much as outright killing them will.

3. Be a Rider: Riders, while their tattoos also fade, will not die from their tattoos completely fading out. This is because unlike with other individuals, their tattoos are fed by their natural power as opposed to their lifeforce. However, if their tattoos do completely fade out, they will lose consciousness and will only awaken three days later once their power source has recovered. This survivability is balanced out by the fact that essentially everyone who bears the ink literally depends on their blood to survive, making them both the top and bottom of the food chain all at once.

Definitely interested in this.

Tbh, I mainly clicked on the thread because I thought it was going to be based on Splatoon and I felt like having a laugh about it, but I'm glad I was wrong haha.

I do love this idea. So original. <3

I'll be lurking here to submit a charrie whenever this rp gets up and running. :'3

Thank you all for the interest! I promised myself I would make this RP as soon as I had at least 5 people voice interest, so I'm going to start working on it tonight!

Glad you think so! I have a few things to do over the next couple of days so it might be a while before the finished project, but I started working on the RP.

I'll post a link here once it is ready to accept profiles.

That's great! I have free time today so I'll work on the RP some more. Might even get it done by the end of the day if I'm lucky.

Could I suggest that you lower the 'lifetime' of a tattoo to 6 months or a year? I think it would be better if characters were under a persistent pressure to renew their ink.

I understand the idea you have here but let me just put this into perspective:

The first thing to keep in mind is that there's a limited number of Rider siblings and the other ingredients for the ink are also hard to come by.

If the limit is too low, everyone on the side of the Kings who are actively hunting down the Riders would be screwed.

Plus if one of the Riders die, the good guys have a chance to get back on their feet before the Kings need ink again.

Also, you have to think of it from an "in universe" perspective; how stupid do you have to be to give yourself superpowers if, in exchange, you're guaranteed to die by next july?

These are all things I had in mind while deciding on the "5 year" idea.

But I'm open to discussion on the matter. The RP isn't ready yet after all so I could change it with good reasons.

I'm thinking up a back story, could I get some details clarified?

So, the Rider's and King's are essentially gangs who control the streets, right? Except the rider's presumably defend common people and are liked, where as the Knights would be more power hungry?

The Riders both invented the ink and disappear 5 years ago. How much time was there in between these events? Did they disappear almost immediately?

When they went into hiding, the riders would have still been in the city, popping up from time to time, right? They didn't actually leave, only to return with the start of the (modern day) rp?

I would be interested in this! It depends on if I can fit this on my plate tho since I'm already in a few other RPs but I'll def make a CS if I can :)

To answer your questions in order...

So, the Rider's and King's are essentially gangs who control the streets, right?

Yes and no, the Kings are definitely a gang-like organization, but the Riders were more like celebrities which were forced into gang-like acts as a result of groups going after them, one of them being the Kings.

Except the Riders presumably defend common people and are liked, where as the Kings would be more power hungry?

The Riders are more defending themselves, being liked is just a happy byproduct of being charismatic figures of the city's night life. But you're 100% as far as the Kings are concerned. Also, the Riders were more "respected" than "liked". Most people envied them more than adored them.

The Riders both invented the ink and disappear 5 years ago. How much time was there in between these events? Did they disappear almost immediately?

The Riders were outnumbered and outpowered by the Kings and needed an edge, so the Ink was made. This evened the playing field, but also motivated the Kings further as they now had another reason to go after the Riders. There is a 6 month span between the creation of the Ink and the disappearance of the Riders.

When they went into hiding, the riders would have still been in the city, popping up from time to time, right? They didn't actually leave, only to return with the start of the (modern day) rp?

That is a "case by case" thing. Some decided to go into hiding, some changed their identities, some left the city altogether... I plan to give complete freedom to those who will play the Riders as far as what they decided to do within those five years is concerned.

The only thing I might not be up to par for is 3 paragraphs when you are conversing with other player characters that seems difficult to me because I am a little newer to forum rp

It's fine if you make a few exceptions to the rule. Just don't make a habit of it. I won't be excessive about enforcing them. It's really more of a "I want you to try" than a "do it or else" kind of thing.
