Imperium Galactica

For an example of what might be a "full" faction sheet, I've finished mine.

Faction Name: The Kefalonian Trade Empire

Faction Type: Parliamentary Monarchy

Composite Species: Kefalonian, Human

Stardate Founded: 1234.4 (13th Century AD)

Overview: The Kefalonian Trade Empire is a large nation containing over one hundred billion souls spread across roughly an eighth of the Galaxy. The Kefalonians are usually considered the most morally "good" species in the cosmos and are known to be great mediators of disputes between the other polities of the Milky Way.

Kefalonians are tall, physically strong humanoids that hail from the frigid planet Kefalonia and are adapted to planets with cold climates and high gravity. Much of their society resembles human civilizations of the early industrial period, with an embrace of handiwork and a distaste for computers. Despite this, they are highly skilled travellers of the cosmos and have been a spacefaring race since the Terran 18th Century.

Kefalonians made first contact with Humanity in the 23rd Century, sparking controversy in both peoples because of their biological similarities. The Kefalonians found the Humans as a validation of their own religious beliefs in a vast cosmic family of species made in God's image, while Humanity was divided between those who welcomed the Kefalonians as protectors and brethren, and those that saw them as unwelcome interlopers and potential competition. By the 24th Century, Humanity had severed all ties with the Trade Empire, but Human colonies on the border began to rebel and join the Kefalonians under the promise of material prosperity, military protection, and political stability. This led to the Border Wars between the Kefalonians and a group of insurgents, the Knights of Ruske, who were funded as proxies of the Earth government. After a lengthy engagement, the insurgents were defeated and the war crimes of the Ruske were laid squarely at the feet of the Council of Worlds on Earth, which hastened the demise of the Grand Human Empire into a patchwork of minor polities of more or less barbarism. Many of these former provinces of the Empire chose to join the Kefalonians, contributing to the sizeable Human population of the Empire.

Leader(s): King Voracius I, Grand Commander Karpathius, Matriarch Loyea

Military Overview: The Kefalonian military relies mostly on its large fleet of heavy warships. A Kefalonian fleet typically consists of eight dreadnoughts, large heavily armed and armored warships, that carry within their specialized hangars two frigates each. Each frigate additionally carries interceptors, small spacecraft designed to engage other light spacecraft.

Once they land, Kefalonians rely heavily on heavy armor and artillery. They are a "mass infantry" civilization, meaning they utilitize large numbers of ground troops instead of relatively small specialized squads. Their main goals when fighting on-world are to control the food and water sources of the planet and force a quick surrender, minimizing loss of life.

Society and Culture: Economically, the Kefalonians practice a system called Distributism, in which most economic activity is highly localized. Every planet or city within that planet has a highly diverse economy, and manufacture everything they need on the same planet. The government is wary of the power of corporations, and so there are only a few large companies such as the Kefalonian Spacers Guild and Farvalos Salvage. Their economic system seeks to maximize the potential of small business over large corporations. This leads to greater prosperity across the Empire and greater economic freedom, but it is relatively inefficient, especially in agriculture.

Kefalonians are highly loyal to their government and take their roles as citizens and voters very seriously. The Parliament, which has a member from each colonized world except for Kefalonia Prime, which has ten. Political gridlock is rampant in the Parliament, thus the King is usually the ultimate decision maker. If the King has the support of the Grand Commander of the Armed Forces and the Matriarch/Patriarch of the Church, he can draft legislation to circumvent the Parliament. This legislation has to be approved by the High Court of Justice. Overall, the political system is almost intentionally designed to be slow and unresponsive so that the government doesn't fuck anything up.

Kefalonians are highly religious and believe in an active deity that formed them and other races like them out of the primordial clay while other races were guided by evolution. They believe they have an ordained duty to bring law, order, justice, and peace to the cosmos. Their religious beliefs influence a Puritanical society that shuns drug use, non-marital sex, and a myriad other social positions. The Church is known to have missions on planets throughout the Galaxy, converting other races to the Kefalonian religion.

Kefalonians shun the commercial and industrial use of artificial intelligences and still do much of their work, including farmwork and construction, with hand tools. Rich families do, on occasion, contract androids as servants. Additionally, the military uses androids to supplement their ground forces. The Rights of Intelligent Beings Act that was passed Stardate 2943.4 stipulates that intelligent automatons cannot be manufactured except by other androids, and are entitled to compensation for their work.

Kefalonian architecture is somewhat similar to Gothic architecture of the Middle Ages, with most buildings crafted out of iridescent stone. Kefalonians are very keen to aesthetics and prefer ornate masonry buildings to glass skyscrapers.

Technology:

Arms Technology: Most Kefalonian weaponry is based on a non-gunpowder explosive propellant. Some special weapons are laser or magnet-based.

Engine Technology: Kefalonian personal vehicles up to starships are powered by perpetual motion generators. These devices require no fuel and can put off large amounts of power, but they are susceptible to violent explosion if they fall out of alignment due to friction.

Medical Technology: Kefalonians have cured most diseases and use drugs to give themselves an augmented immune system. They can replace limbs and organs with mechanical parts that function at 100% efficiency.

Armor and Shielding: Kefalonian shielding technology is robust, as large shield generators are used to defend cities from orbital bombardment. They also have relatively advanced armor alloys.

Computer Technology: Kefalonians have several large quantum computers for research and defense purposes, but most tasks that in other empires are relegated to computers are performed by scribes in Kefalonia. Kefalonians are obsessed with cyber security, and as such they do most things on paper.

Ambitions/Goals: Unite the Galaxy under the banner of the Trade Empire, and create a confederation of equal states committed to Kefalonian ideals.

Hmph.. we'll see how this plays out.
