rather unladylike snort escaped Ruònán at Rie's mention of withholding from any unbecoming behaviors. As if the entirety of the Zodiac was entangled in some odd web of love and lust. Outsiders could rarely tell the difference between those that held genuine disdain versus what they deemed to be flirtatious teasing. "To be extremely frank with you Rie-sama, I doubt I'm the one you really need to worry about enforcing that rule to seeing as how you're the only I break it for anyway with the way most of the staff here is absolutely under your full control....unless one of the pretty servants finds me delectable enough to break whatever hold you have on them."

Hearing Rie bring up the previous grievances that the other families had held against her, a rather devious lightbulb went off in the Dog's head. If she were transformed, her tail would be wagging at glee in knowing that what she was about to do would at least bring a little excitement into the dull compound life. It'd also aggravate God in a way that would make her regret questioning the Dog.

Ruònán placed her elbows on the desk and allowed her face to slip into the serious mask she often had to use during her job which left most intimidated or rightly concerned for their well-being, "We have Miss Rat who feels some sort of ownership over the role of being your favorite because she was the first to win the race and maybe she's tired of playing second-fiddle to me, you're obvious favorite. I doubt that Big Bird, Big Lizard, and my lovely ball obsessed Ox cousin would ever go against you or hold any real threatening animosity. I could see the Snake and Monkey holding you accountable for what happened to the previous God, even though that's some of the dumbest logic I've heard. The Horse's desire for greatness might create a need for more than what she was given while the Boar could feel overshadowed by your beauty and greatness. I've fought my brothers for less so I could see how that cluster-fuck could lead to them plotting on your downfall if the really wanted to. That Rabbit brother of yours couldn't care less about the hierarchy so he's clear in my eyes."

She began to count on her fingers to see who she forgot to bring up, "Oh! Can't forget the Cat who is...well, the Cat. Just born mischievous and loves to antagonize for the fun of it. I don't think our cute little Sheep has the gall to try and go against you, doesn't really seem her style. And then you have yours truly, a Dog that knows what she wants would only take you down in a way that requires no witnesses."

“Just look at that grin. Looks like you’re keeping it together, pretty boy. Well.. Barely, I guess.” Feiyao observed, her usual foxy tone returning with the underlying weft of amusement. “I’ll tell you what, you definitely surprise me everytime we talk. Not as pathetic as a couple other of your cousins.” She let out a quiet chuckle, this time her gaze coated with a sense of unpredictability.

“I won’t give up though, I figure since you're Rie’s little pawn you can be mine too.” The redhead added on with an almost casual venom as she looked the Boar in the eyes, “It’s what you're good for, right?”

The intentions behind her words were now blatant, almost painfully so, just as they always were whenever she conversed with the Boar. She did not need to hide a veil of lies because the reaction she wanted was always drawn from out of him—always.

Feiyao backed off, instead choosing to lean back in her chair as the hum of murmur filled her ears. She allowed her eyes to linger on the man’s face before briefly flickering away, a sense of discontent in her gaze. “Or you can piss off and I’ll just harass you later. I don’t really care for your drama-queen soap opera right now if you’re not gonna say anything. I need to get drunk, or worse.” She simply stated as she rose from her chair, her stride slow as she scanned the room.

Feiyao wasn’t exactly surprised to hear the Boar fumble after her, and it didn’t take long for her to sniff out a servant. With a short flirty exchange, she quickly snatched an unopened bottle of wine. “Thank you, miss. Call me if you need de-stressing, okay?”

The young woman turned in the opposite direction, making sure to dramatically stop in her tracks. “Oh, you’re still here?” Feiyao smirked as she unceremoniously popped open the wine bottle, “If you want me that badly just say so. I’m not picky.”

Dakila -> Jun Jian

tags

@ user @ user

Enzo’s smirk deepened, satisfaction curling through him as he caught the way Jun Jian’s expression shifted, how the image he had painted had hooked him. It was rare to see the Dragon’s wants so plainly displayed, but here they were—mirrored in the brightness of his eyes, the subtle quirk of his lips. Jun Jian looked alive in a way that sent a thrill down Enzo’s spine. It was exhilarating. Addictive. He caught the flicker of recognition in Jun Jian’s gaze, the way he understood the subtle shift in Enzo’s tone. That was what made the Dragon his favorite opponent and occasional accomplice. He didn’t need to explain the game to him; Jun Jian just knew when to fall in line and when to push back.

At the scoff, and sharp retort, Enzo let out a low hum of amusement. He did love Jun Jian’s arrogance. “America, really?” he drawled, dragging out the syllables as if the very notion was absurd. “That’s ambitious. But if you’d rather investigate from across an ocean, who am I to stop you?”

And then, predictably, Jun Jian conceded—though not in so many words. Enzo chuckled, tilting his head, watching him with something close to affection. “Oh? You’d still let me in?” he echoed, mockingly touched. “How generous.” His voice dipped lower, silk-smooth. “I’ll hold you to that.” As if he ever needed permission to barge into Jun Jian's, unannounced, uninvited—but always expected.

The thought of their abilities weakening was a problem, but Enzo wasn’t the type to sulk over inconvenience. He was the type to fix it. And now, with two of the Circle’s sharpest minds on the case? Well, he dared say they had the advantage.

“The poor bastard probably has no idea what’s coming for them,” Enzo murmured, casual in a way that made it clear he didn’t particularly care. Whoever was behind this, whoever would inevitably be caught in Rie’s grip, wasn’t his concern. He was only here for the thrill of the chase.

“How much time do we have?” Enzo mused, smirk curving into a challenge. “Well, that depends on how good we are, doesn’t it?”

He leaned back in his seat. “I do have the nicer setup, naturally,” he admitted, lazy and self-satisfied. Then, with a slow, deliberate nudge of his knee against Jun Jian’s, he added, voice laced with something teasing, “But oh, what would people think—you, slipping into my room in the middle of the night?”

The Dog

Rie's eyebrow twitched in annoyance at Ruònán's unseemly proclamation. Who does this kid think she is? Rie bristled and tightened her cardigan around her form, peering to the side as The Dog moved on. No. None of them were children anymore, especially the tall woman before her. It was a bittersweet experience, as a God's spirit who loomed over their creations. What they have become. What they would rather be. Anger quelled within her again, but she tamped it down and listened to Ruònán go down a list she was rather familiar with. Of course she had to insert little quips about situations that made Rie tense. Disobedient brat, she thought with an eyeroll at Ruònán's final dig.

But she made some good points. The Cat. The Horse. Rie would not be surprised if either one of those two would entangle themselves with... forces who wished to harm The Circle. Well, scratch The Horse. She always wanted to attain power by her own merits. Not the lazy conniving Cat. Feiyao had little shame. Yet Rie tried, tried with all her might, to not be prejudiced. Feiyao made it difficult.

Basically, The Dog had nothing for her except steamy promises and inappropriate ways to address Rie.
"Enough," she warned her, the heat in her ears almost singeing her hair. All business.
"I will have more use for your talents later. For now, keep an eye out for anything suspicious and report it immediately to me. Even if you have to wake me up. And remember -- you serve The Circle, Ruònán, not your own whims," Rie told The Dog after a long sigh, bitterness seeping into her deep grey eyes.
"As do I," she finally murmured as her eyes softened into some obscure and hesitant conviction. She cleared her throat.

"Send Jùn Jiàn in please."

K
eeping it together? Keisuke was holding himself up with a string alone, his facade slowly slipping the longer he wasted time at this ridiculous gathering. Regardless, there was still a radiant smile plastered on his face, even beginning to make his cheeks ache.

Even as he spoke with his stupid little smile, his mind was racing, reminding him of just one thing in that moment: ’She’s trying to get a rise out of you. She’s trying to get a rise out of you. She’s trying to–’ And it was almost working. The blonde could feel his eye threatening to twitch with her venomous words, an alikeness to another particular woman swimming in Feiyao’s actions.

Well, if she wanted him to react poorly, he would make sure not to give in.
”Apologies, since I’m just sooooo busy doing the only thing I’m good for, I won’t have time to be your pawn as well.”
While his voice had a singsongy yet sarcastic note to it, at his side, hidden by the chair from Feiyao’s view, his fingers trembled with irritation. Nails bit into the flesh of his palm, grounding his emotions the best he could. Oh, how he wanted to lash out, but it would be far too easy of a win for her. And a long day if Rie found out that he was bested by the Cat.

’Drama queen soap opera.’ She just kept on pushing his buttons. Nonetheless, he managed a slight smirk, a small chuckle following. If anyone was being a drama queen, wasn’t it her? Golden eyes followed her movements carefully, taking in the calculating and menacing nature brooding from the Cat.

Just as expected, when Feiyao rose from her chair and walked off, the Boar was trailing behind her, just like the good little pawn he was.

”Eugh?”
The noise escaped his mouth before he could put a stop to it, both startled and almost horrified by her comment. Not that she was repulsive or anything! But– Keisuke was quite dumbfounded, just like she had surely intended. He recovered immediately, much to his credit.
”Oh Feiyao, I know I’m gorgeous but you’re just not my type~ This is strictly business. You understand, I’m sure.”

The man winked, slowly taking the bottle of wine from the woman’s hands, to which he took a swig from.
”Listen, Rie only said I had to follow you. She didn’t say we couldn’t leave together and go get trashed somewhere.”

He was offering an out, if anything. Not only for himself, but for her too. His hand gripping the neck of the bottle tipped it back and forth, listening to the contents slosh almost nervously as he waited for her response. The success rate for her wanting to get drunk was often... considerably high. But to get drunk with him? That certainly lowered his percentages. Keisuke merely blinked at her as he took another drink, eyebrows raised.

eeing how the woman in front of her reacted to her statements was more than enough of a reward for being brought in and questioned like some unknown compound servant. Sure, the fading occurrences of strength and the less frequent transformations could be seen as a sign that something greater was at play and actively going against Rie. On the other hand, maybe the animal spirits themselves had finally grown tired of this endless game and sought out a different means to an end. Such broad thinking wasn't above Ruònán...she just didn't give a damn enough to really care about finding the source.

Her status as a zodiac did have its perks but she adored the freedom that being a Dog often brought her more than how the public praised her. Running as fast as her four legs could carry her and never concerned over being mistaken for some average mutt due to her sheer size and the cleanliness of her appearance. Plus, most, if not all, of those that would have seen her knew exactly what her Zodiac form looked like down to the distinct fur markings. She'd miss the freedom the alternate form gave her but would make the best out of the situation even if she eventually lost it. Sensing Rie's change in demeanor once again, Ruònán was brought back to the present and could almost hear the sound of the cogs in her head grinding against one another in search of their next target.

The grin on her face spread as Ruònán picked up on the redness slowly creeping up Rie's face, 'I guess I should slow down with the teasing before she has me locked up in some kind of cage.' Her ears perked up as soon as God began to speak directly to her and it took everything within her to not say the first thing that came to mind, so she opted for the second.

"Good to hear that you've caught word of my talents, I can only hope that they're more than enough to satisfy you Rie. It's not like I'd ever hesitate to come running to your room in the middle of the night either, so no need to worry about that. Oh, and before you get the chance the to tell me how inappropriate I am, I'm gonna go get Big Scaly Bro for you to question next. Bye-bye for now until you need me to warm your bed!" Ruònán used her superhuman agility to quickly exit before Rie's anger could bubble over into something less than desired.

The Tiger, The Rooster

Ahri’s breath hitched - not in shock, but in something far more intoxicating. Dakila’s grip around her wrist was firm, his fingers pressing just enough for her to feel the weight of his claim. Yet, there was a careful precision to his touch, as if he were handling something fragile, something precious.

She watched, eyes gleaming with intrigue, as he removed the other bracelet - the one Ruangsak had given her. And, without hesitation, tossed it over the balcony. No second thought, no flicker of doubt. Just virtuous, unshaken conviction. A slow smirk curled onto her lips. Ahri thrived on admiration, but there was something dangerously enticing about devotion laced with possessiveness.

She let him linger, just for a moment - a brief indulgence, but for who? Ahri was never one to let anyone bask in her presence for too long, so, with a graceful flick of her wrist, she pulled her arm back. Lifting her wrist toward the warm glow of the nearby light fixtures, she let the bracelet catch and reflect the hues, watching as the diamonds shimmered against her skin. It dangled, its brilliance undeniable.

But she didn’t offer a word of praise. No gleeful smile, no widened eyes of surprise. No need. The fact that she didn’t dismiss it, that she didn’t immediately replace it with another, was praise enough. It was exactly what she liked. And from Dakila, that was exactly what she expected.

Anything less would have been a disappointment.

His gaze locked onto hers, and Ahri let him pursue. Let him wallow in the moment of possibility, of anticipation. Then, slowly her eyes drifted downward, tracing the constellation of beauty marks that adorned his skin, each one kissed by her view, as if acknowledging something implicit.

“Tonight?” She repeated, tilting her head slightly, letting the word dangle in the gap between them like a delicate thread waiting to be pulled. She glanced to the side, pretending to ponder, though they both knew she had already decided. It was never a matter of if - only how much he deserved.

Then, she stepped forward, closing the distance just enough to tilt the balance in her favor. Her lips hovered near his ear, close enough for him to feel the warmth of her breath, close enough to make a pulse skip.

“Only if you earned it. You know which room." She pulled back just slightly, just enough to let him see the slow, knowing smile curling on her lips. The game was his to play - but the rules? Those were always hers.

"A
ugh—!"

With his balance threatened, Kōzō's struggled to tug apart the knuckles he'd interlaced to plant instead at the table. With a smallish clatter of dishes & accessories, Kōzō fussed inaudibly in his effort to straighten up, forced to instead settle into a slouch to support the sudden weight around his shoulders.

Once comfortable, he again brought up his palm to support his cheek as the two—Ruangsak & Kōzō, that was—listened to Chenxi. Questions asked & comments made, first by one then the other, were only smally reacted to by Kōzō with utterances or gestures until there was no question: the conversation's tempo had turned to him.

As though it were a spotlight pointed at his hair's part, there pricked a heat from the gaze of the man beside him, awaiting his own reply after Chenxi's inquiry for more information. Visibly, he deflated only in the slightest increment before reclining back in his chair, Ruangsak's arm in tow, replying as plainly as though only the time had been asked of him,
"Nothing more than what my sister already said. Meddling with..."
—he rolled his wrist—
"existence."

As the mood sobered, Kōzō's typically light mien fell to a frown, brows flat & all. His eyes didn't meet theirs, instead only loosely tracing the designs of the empty plate's decorating below. Only when Ruangsak's voice dropped did Kōzō's shoulders hike up; for such a booming voice to quiet, it did unsettle the hare who did little to hide it, even when his act reverted.

With a practiced smile of his own, he brought a hand up to wipe away the chill left from the rooster's breath at his ear.

"Ahahah, come on,
" faltered Kōzō, shrugging Ruangsak's arm off his then-aching shoulder. To be the gatekeeper of nonexistent secrets did wear at a man who held loyalty to such high regard. Honestly, he felt himself deflate in being unable to shake off their concern.

With a brow drawn, he told his audience & whoever else might've listened in,
"Nothing to hide. If there was something to say, you both could guess my sister would've been the first to say it."

With his chin tilted into his palm, he added with an averted gaze,
"If it was one of you two, let her know. In the meantime, you said you're missing practice?"
He looked to first Ruangsak, then to Chenxi.

The question, as with all things when it came to Kōzō, was asked in earnest. Though it should've been obvious, he supposed practice over a video call wasn't feasible. With eyes rested on the bare, decorative tableware, Kōzō mused,
"... Huh."

Like it'd only just occurred to him, the man straightened up to offer:
"In that case, let's fly them in. Or—"
he started,
"You tell me. I want you comfortable. I dunno: it might be cool to have, like, a court in the residence."

Rie was not completely unfair. Rooms had been prepared for her animals, and she saw to it that such care was was adorned in each one, besides her family members who already had rooms in the estate. At around 9:45 AM, servants heralded each member of the The Circle to their room and announced lunch would be served at noon in the Meeting Hall. Loungewear was prohibited at meal times and in Rie's sight and "sleepovers" in one another's room were strongly discouraged. Each room had its own personal touch customized to the animal. For instance, Ahreum's had her go-to hair and skincare products with extra mirrors installed last-minute in the walls. Chenxi's had a widescreen TV to watch basketball games with an access key to the estate's gym if he so pleased (as did his cousin's room). Mingyue's had a stack of the newest editions of her favorite romance novel series and a bouquet of her favorite flowers. The God built a comfortable cage for her Circle.
Nara, Japan. January 3rd, 2025. 10:02 AM. The Circle was allotted free time until lunch was to be served at noon. Rie opted to escort Jùn Jiàn personally to his, and that was where their meeting would commence. Seeing as Feiyao, the mischievous cat, wished to poke at Rie's lapdog, she pursued Ruònán outside her room. Nangnoi overheard and decided to join in the sly conversation, where some innuendos might go over her sweet head. Kozo opted to escort Enzo personally to his room, where he felt information may be extracted during the short trip. Dakila parted ways with Ahreum temporarily, escorted by servants to his room. Interestingly enough, it was on the opposite wing of the estate of his brother's but besides Chenxi's. He passed Keisuke escorting Ruangsak in the hall, his eyes briefly trained on him with masked indifference. Then, he moved on. When the servant left him, he knocked on his old friend's door and opened to see Mingyue inside with the basketball player. She did seem rather agitated, maybe with the knowledge that The Dragon was summoned before The Rat? A simple guess. He walked in and shut the door behind him, his interest piqued. Khanh, too, was shown to her room, but she was The Tiger -- and would be brash in some way or another. She caught Ahreum leaving her room to make another phone call where there was better signal and opted to poke at her about Dakila. Riling up the diva sounded fun, and maybe she wished to take her frustrations out on someone. No worries. Ahreum would happily return the favor.

The Dragon

The Dragon was sent in her office with the faint smell of smoke on his person. It obviously irked The God, but she made no word of it yet. Criticisms grew tiresome even for a long-time producer such as herself, and The Dog was responsible for the throbbing heaviness in her head. Even when Jùn Jiàn stood in her office, she permitted the silence to linger and quietly recovered from Ruònán's boundary-testing behavior. She sighed and shut her notebook, stuffing it into a locked drawer. The woman stood and took a long look at Jùn Jiàn. The forests of his eyes rarely relayed his motives, much like the twins. Over the years, she could see much of him, how he wished to craft his own success, how he found the top of the pyramid so isolating. She took a few steps towards him.

"I will show you to your room," she finally broke the silence, the warmth of her hand on his back as she guided him out the door. They walked in silence. Neither were one for pleasantries, at least in each other's presence. Rie was not one for it in general. She slid open the door of his room, walking inside and shutting it behind them. It was neat and orderly, much more so than particular. A wall of fresh books in alphabetical order of no particular genre lived on the shelves, and there was an access key to the gym that included a swimming pool for The Dragon. Even a large jacuzzi tub in his en-suite bathroom. The room, too, was warmer than the others. Rie stood near the window, the light reflected off the snow on the ground particularly bright as it framed her. Her posture was straight, and her hands properly twined together behind her back.

"You should know better than to smoke, Jùn Jiàn," she scolded softly, as if that was the only way she could imagine starting the conversation. That might have been their conversation-starter for years, and it never bore any fruit.
She cleared her throat. Down to business.
"Back in Singapore, the last few years, has anyone approached you? Even anyone from Japan?" she asked with knitted eyebrows.

It wasn’t long before the cat had been freed of the stupid little thing that kept trailing after her, though Feiyao would have surely considered his inane offer if that meetup had gone on for any longer. She liked inane, it was fun. Whatever the hell was going on now, was the furthest thing from it.

As soon as the servants began whisking away each zodiac, Feiyao had already slipped through the grand doors of the reception hall before any of the quiet chaos could erupt. She considered finding some way to leave, or even continue getting wasted in her room, but she knew she’d never hear the end of it from Rie.

It was as much of a headache as the hangover she’d have in the morning. Moving to throw aside the wine bottle, a thought crossed her mind. The Boar didn’t feel inclined enough to share his conversation with his owner with Feiyao, perhaps another one could. Feiyao’s smirk curled, her eyes a faint vermillion glow tracing the moving escorts. As soon as she found the one walking beside Ruònán, she didn’t hesitate, instead kindling the spark of curiosity as she approached the woman.

Ruònán stood with an air of confidence, her gaze, a tangible mixture of hard-headedness and self assurance, shared a look with Feiyao’s. Perhaps she could see the turning behind the Cat’s eyes, perhaps she could make out the cardinal yearning. Either way, both would become obvious as Feiyao stopped her stride. Briskly moving to dismiss the servant, Feiyao looked on with half-lidded eyes.

“Ruònán, look at you. Have you recovered from that whole meeting? I realize that something like this is not worth your time.” Her velvety tone flickered with a sense of pressing questions, though Feiyao knew better than to ask right away—she’d test the waters first. “Why don’t I escort you to your room? I’m burning to see it. Or we can run away, just the two of us.”

Feiyao looked up at her with her arms lazily crossed, her smile was practically dripping with unmarred confidence. “I mean the air here is so damp, like a wet towel. Almost like some of the others in this whole circle. Not you, luckily I have the absolute pleasure of laying my eyes on a meal like you.”

“So, will you let me feast? Maybe we can schedule that after we ditch this estate and find a club. You’re the kind that likes the thrill of it all, am I wrong?”
Feiyao’s final words were only flirtatious jest, she knew a loyal dog like Ruònán wouldn’t dare go against God's orders—but perhaps she would take her first suggestion.

elvet petals squished between Mingyue’s fingers as she studied the bouquet left in her room. No doubt, the workings of their esteemed God, a small token of care that warmed Mingyue’s heart, only to be quenched with the cold resentment of the summoning of her brother and not herself.

There was no point dwelling. Rie had made her choice, and it was obvious that Mingyue was unneeded. It was fine, Mingyue repeated, swiping away the makeup that had begun to feel suffocating. She allowed her bare face to breathe for only a moment before being coated in skincare products. Her gaze lingered in the mirror of her room, fingers itching to comb down the few flyaway hair strands that had made themselves obnoxiously apparent when she put her hair down. Instead, she turned away, knowing that if she stayed she’d chase a perfection that she could never obtain.

The walk to Chenxi’s room wasn’t far, still, Mingyue was glad she had opted to swap out her corseted top and heels for a loose dress shirt and sneakers.

Mingyue hadn’t even asked if she could stop by. Choosing to invite herself over and make herself comfortable in his room as if it were expected.

Friends weren’t something Mingyue considered herself to have. A notion formed from unaddressed self-doubt and a rigid upbringing that saw people as tools rather than companions. Success depended not on weak friendships, but on utilizing others’ strengths.

Chenxi was no different, just another pawn in the zodiac’s twisted game of chess. Or at least, he started as such. Time seemed to blur the lines between the faux friendship Mingyue clung to and genuine enjoyment of one’s company. Xixi was an oblivious person, and maybe such a trait had allowed him to miss the unsavory and dastardly parts of Mingyue that others were quick to admonish. Why Xixi put up with her she didn’t know, but she was grateful that he did.

The headache that had permeated her mind since entering the compound had finally begun to wane. She needed a distraction, even if that was Xixi talking about whatever sports stuff he cared about. Something far away from the current issues at hand.

“Are you still doing the whole sport,”
she waved a hand with a nonchalant indifference as if the concept was foreign,
“...thing or whatever? My doctor said that I should be more active, but I hardly have the time. I suppose now I do, but I’d prefer to leave the athletics to you.”

"What good is there in loyalty?"
