Anna was dead.

Cameron had arrived in her hometown a few days prior to the funeral. She was staying at her parents house, in her old bedroom. Everything in that place-- in this place-- had a memory attached to it, down to the scents of the bakery on fifth street on sunday morning. For a moment, Cam had been seventeen again. About to graduate, living her best life with her very best friends.

And then she opened her eyes, and the memories faded into nothingness. Anna was dead, and she hadn't spoken to the rest of her friends in almost five years. It was tragic, really-- it broke Cameron's heart to know that they might be here, if only to see Anna being buried.

Cam felt like she should have known. Someone should have known that Anna was sick, but like the mother figure she was, she kept her illness hidden from all of them until it was too late. Now all they had were memories, and the same letter written to each of them. Or at least, Cam assumed it was written to all of them, considering her plural use of the word friends.

In fact, Cam had the letter in her pocket now, and she touched it as though it might bring her some comfort. The funeral would begin shortly, and she needed all the comfort and strength she could get. Drawing in a shaky breath, she adjusted her sweater and headed into the church, finding a seat with her parents somewhere near the front.

The service completely wrecked her waterproof eyeliner, she was sure of it. It lasted about an hour, and afterwards, she managed to slip away from her parents influence rather quickly. Needing a moment, just a moment, she left the church and headed around the side of the building, where she pressed her forehead against the wall and closed her eyes.

Just breathe, honey. It'll all be alright. I'm still here, you know.

She heard Anna's voice in her mind, and choked on a sob. It wasn't fair. Cam knew she'd been a shit friend by not keeping in touch, and now she'd have to deal with that guilt forever. Her hands balled into a fist, and she turned so that her back was pressed against the wall.

What was she supposed to do now? Go back to school and pretend like nothing had happened? Like her world hadn't been shaken? That's what Anna would do, she knew. And she also knew that it's what she would do. Cameron's entire world was built on hiding her feelings, and pushing through. It's what she'd always done, and it's what she would do now.

Sniffing, she pushed herself off the wall and wiped her eyes, hoping she didn't look too much like a raccoon as she started back towards the front of the church.

So it was true... He begged it to not be, stuffing his body full of drugs to distract himself from the pain. She was gone. Anna. His best friend, his confidant, the one person he could rely on for anything. She did anything for him and now she was gone. All Jacob could do was day goodbye and question everything. Could he have done more for her? Should he have noticed something? Why didn't he notice something? She must have been so sick for so long. Jacob blinked away his tears and pushed the sunglasses up his nose to cover his red eyes. The drugs were leaving his system and he was red in the face with grief and sorrow. His eyes were waterfalls of bereavement whilst his body tried to make it through the day. He came for Anna and he wanted to be there for her no matter what despite definitely disappointing her by showing up the way he did.

Jacob brought the large hip flask shakily to his lips. He sucked down the amber liquid as if it was all that mattered whilst the cold nipped at his exposed ears and chapped lips. This would be how he'd spend today: drunk, sad and heartbroken. Whisky was medication for people who can't stand it sober and he had to push through. He had to see his beloved Anna who was taken from him far too soon. He needed to apologize for being an awful friend and not being entrusted with the knowledge of her condition. He needed to say goodbye before the grief ate him alive. So he trudged along, up the beaten path to the church. He just wanted to be alone with his best friend.

Out of all the trips she had been on over the years. This one wasn't the longest but it sure as hell felt like it. Driving in complete silence the while on her way there, not even stopping to eat. She didn't feel like eating. The news hit her hard, like a tonne of bricks one would say and it definitely smacked her harder that she could ever imagine it could. How could Anna be dead? She had been messaging her not long before this had all happened with absolutely no idea that Anna's days were numbered. She didn't even get to meet with her like she had promised dozens of times but would always get busy with work. Even if she had all the free time in the world now, she could never use it to see Anna... She winced at the thought. She never had to say goodbye like this before, there was a mix of emotions in her stomach and not one of them was a positive one and that feeling only grew as she pulled into the car park of the church where cars were already filling almost every space. Not a surprise. Anna was a warm soul that took anyone and everyone under her wing, it made sense that so many people were here to bid her farewell.

The atmosphere was heavy in the church, she was sure there wasn't a being in this building that wasn't choking up. Herself included. She would always try to strive in trying to keep her composure and when she would leave to move else where she would try to leave feelings and memories behind. Obviously that stuff she left behind was waiting for her here in this church because by the end of the service her eyes were puffy and almost stinging from holding in tears, even at that, many spilled out. That was definitely a difficult hour and composure was not kept.

She stepped outside once the service was over and took a deep breath in. The air was cold but it was helping her calm so she kept her jacket draped over her arm instead of pulling it on for now it was then that she saw a familiar face in the corner of her eye and her breath held... Cam. Of course Cam was here. She and the others were mixed in that crowd too most likely. She wondered if Cam was told about Anna being sick in the first place? Probably. those two were very close. Her voice seemed to leave her. Not able to utter a word to the girl and instead turned her head as if she hadn't spotted her in the first place. Her expression ashamed as a guilty feeling pulled her chest hard. They didn't graduate and part company on good terms over something that in hindsight was stupid. Marianna regretted it and she wasn't sure if Cam would even want to talk with her after that regardless of how much time had passed. She couldn't face that. especially not somewhere like this...

Looking out the car window as they pulled up to the church Alana couldn't believe how quickly this day seemed to arrive. She had been joining Leo in visiting Anna during her hospital stay quite often so they had known that her health was worsening. Still, the news of her death had hit her harder than she thought it would. No matter how prepared she'd been, it didn't make the pain any less present or her heart any less heavy for the loss of her dear friend.

Her black heels clicked against the pavement as she walked up to the church doors with Leo on one side of her and her sister, Zemora, on the other. She was grateful that they had each other for comfort during this time but she did feel awful that she never told her sister about Anna's health. As far as Zemora knew, Alana found out the same as she did. She just thought it was best that it stayed that way.

It wasn't long after stepping inside the church that her hand found Leo's. She squeezed tightly before letting out a breath that she hadn't even realized she was holding. She didn't even try to fight the tears that graced her face as the service went on. There was no point. Everyone here was just as equally heartbroken by this beautiful soul that was taken far too soon. She took a tissue for herself and handed one to her sister, dabbing at her own tears as the service went on.

Alana excused herself after everything ended, heading straight for the bathroom where she made herself presentable again. It was still hard to believe that this had happened. To Anna, of all people. She knew that all of their old friends would be here, granted they actually honor Anna's last wish which she was almost sure they all would. It was such a rush of very mixed emotions sweeping her mind at once. What were they supposed to say? Most of them hadn't kept in touch. She shook the thoughts from her mind and took a deep breath before finally walking out, her eyes scanning the church in search of Zemora or Leo as she wandered aimlessly.

ZEMORA SHELBIA
T.....H.....E..........N.....E.....R.....D

A frown glossed over her lips, marring her serene features with only a small hint of emotion that she was willing to share. Every step she took in her polished pair of heels, the rhythmic tap of her footfalls on the flooring of the church resonating in her thoughts, felt heavier than the last, as if her own body was dreading the scene that was to come before her own mind could process it.

While Alana and Leonard continued past the entrance of the church, Zemora found herself lingering just outside the door, unsure if to go in or occupy herself outside of the establishment until the ceremony started. Hesitation was out of the ordinary for her, for someone with a clear-cut outlook on life, that knew what impact her decisions would make before she ever made them.

It seems that even while dead, Anna was pushing Zemora past the limits she set for herself.

Anna's death had come unexpectedly. The night that she had received the letter from her late friend, she'd returned to her apartment in Washington D.C. after a long day at work in need of a large glass of red wine, her mail piled on top of her kitchen counter in a haphazard mess. With her wine glass filled to the brim and cradled in her slender hand, she rummaged through her mail, sorting through what was of importance and what could be tossed in the trash. When she came across the envelope sent from her hometown, her gaze narrowed.

The last time she contacted Anna was nearly four years ago. The two hadn't been on the best of terms at that time, so to receive a letter from the girl genuinely surprised Zemora, especially considering Anna must've asked Alana for her address.

She opened the envelope with her free hand and brought the letter closer to her line of vision, warm eyes trailing from one end of the paper to the other end to capture every word written there. Once she processed the contents of the letter, the wine glass fell from the safety of her grasp and to the floor with a loud crash. Though she felt drops of glass and liquid against her ankles and her muscles jolt from the shock, her focus remained solely on the words before her, her heart hammering in her chest and her jaw slacked open.

Anna was dead.

And just as she had wished in that final message, her friends were now gathered at her ceremony to see her off. Zemora had chose to arrive with Alana and Leo, the two people she had kept the most contact with following their high school graduation, and she had yet to locate their other friends.

With a heavy sigh and her heart in the pits of her stomach, she stepped inside, sliding into a pew beside her sister. Upon being handed a tissue from Alana, she almost handed it back to her. The words, "I don't need one," settled on the tip of her tongue like a finger resting on the trigger of a gun, but nobody could mistake the red swell surrounding her eyes from unshed tears, no matter the amount of makeup she had applied to conceal it.

Rather than use it, she simply kept it in her tight grasp throughout the ceremony, her knuckles a sickly pale color from the action. It had taken nearly all of her effort to hold back her tears until the very end, when she muttered a soft, "Excuse me," and made her way out of the church.

The winter chill nipped at her exposed skin, and Zemora nearly cursed herself for choosing to wear a dress in this season. Throwing her coat over her torso, she tightened it around her to shield herself from the cold air, huffing at the lack of warmth it provided. On her lonesome, she allowed her gaze to roam the area before her, raking every person that stepped out of the church in search of a familiar face.

She successfully caught sight of a familiar head of blonde hair — Cameron — but made no move to approach the girl. Her gaze shifted to a girl standing a few feet from Cameron, and instantly noted her as Marianna, the dark waves of hair far too distinct to miss. Zemora questioned if she should approach her, but decided against the action until Alana returned from wherever she had gone to.

Why was he here?

Caydon thought as he looked out at the church. He left this part of himself when he left this town. Lilo didn't even know about her grandparents since he decided to left all that behind. So did his sister. He looked in the back of the car, seeing his daughter smile right back at him. Anna knew about her, she was her godmother after all. She was there for the birth, even tried to make friends with Lilo's mom. Which still ended up in disaster. Anna still became the mom that Lilo will never have. Even respecting his choices of not telling anyone aside from Micah, Zem, and Jacob about Lilo. She was there for him like no one else and yet...he still didn't know. He didn't know that she was fucking dying. That she had cancer. Anna put everyone at first, leaving herself for last. "Dammit Anna."

During the service, he had his sister watch Lilo. Lilo wanted to go of course, but he had to say no. It was not the time for his friends to discover about Lilo. For once he wanted Anna to be the star of the show. Like it always should have been. He wasn't going to upstage her plus he didn't want her to see her dad cry. Caydon wanted to be strong for her, so he didn't want her to see him at his weakest. Anna was his best friend aside from Zemora. His rock. She gave him the hope that he could be a good friend and a good father which he made sure he was. Always. He looked at the letter in his hand. This is gonna be one hell of a trip.

Caydon walks to Zemora with Lilo by his side. As soon as she saw Zem. She ran off towards her. "Auntie Zemmy! Daddy said that you'll be here but I didn't believe him!" He chuckles and look at his best friend. He smiled at her as softly as he could. There was nothing to say really, they had all lost someone that they deem important to their lives. He looked around seeing everyone. Even...her. "I told you little one. " He chuckles softly as he looked at her softly.

"I guess you got one too?" He said softly looking at his letter and glancing at Zem. "How are you Zemmy?" He said softly glancing at her. It was something about Zem, that made him want to be someone she could be proud of. Maybe it's because she was always riding his ass about his shit and his daughter. Zem was the first person he called after Varla left. Not even Anna, it was Zem. She was the one he needed to be there at that time. She is his best friend after all.

Micah McKinney
Micah Collage.jpg

Josh had that look on his face again.

"What is it?" Micah muttered, peeking at his brother from underneath his arm, which he had thrown over his face as soon as he'd woken up this morning... at least two hours ago.

His brother bit his lip, staring at his feet, and then he glanced over Micah's shoulder at Rafaella, his currently-ex-girlfriend who was curled up on her side next to him. She had flown out here following the news about Anna for emotional support, but Micah was pretty sure she more wanted to distract him. Unfortunately, she was a very good distraction. Very good.

"It's Dad. He wants to talk to you," Josh finally murmured, jerking his head back toward the balcony. The McKinney's roost had a balcony attached to the living room, and it was often where Papa McKinney told his children something serious or had his more meaningful conversations with Naomi, their mom.

"Alright." Micah had a feeling he knew what this was about. He hadn't said much since he'd returned home, and since his father noticed everything, this was surely about Anna. Getting up, he pulled the blankets over Rafa so she wouldn't get cold (his mother once said he got this tendency from his father, who would do that for her before they started dating). Standing up was rough--he hadn't exactly gotten much sleep last night, so his inner narcoleptic was telling him to go back to sleep--but he managed to stumble out of his room and down the hall.

Coleson McKinney was leaning on the balcony railing, looking out over the town. Micah adopted the same pose as he joined his father on the balcony. He glanced at his father, who was wearing his normal guyliner. (The one time he'd asked about, he'd said bluntly, "Because your mother never told me she didn't like it." Micah had chosen not to pursue the topic further.)

"Are you sure you don't want Nomika and I to come with you?" Cole asked, finally looking at his son with light blue eyes that matched Aunt Skylie's. They were haunting eyes that tended to mirror exactly what you were feeling at any given time.

Micah swallowed, his grip on the railing tightening. "Yeah."

"Rafaella's going with you."

"Dad, I don't need--"

"Yes, you do." Cole looked away. "She has a lot of her father in her. I can't tell you how many times I needed him to get through something."

"Like Aunt Skylie's wedding?"

Cole smiled over at him. "Like Skylie's wedding."

Micah thought about this. "Okay. I'll take Rafa with me."

~ ~ ~

It didn't take long for Micah to realize why his father had insisted on bringing along Rafaella. As soon as he'd stepped foot in the church, it hit him. Hard. It had hit him before, but this was worse. It was like something had completely stolen whatever feeling he had in his chest, leaving a yawning pit. It was empty in there now, and tears sprang to his eyes. Was this what his dad had felt when he'd lost his mother? It had to be.

Micah spent most of the service leaning on Rafaella, who gently ran a hand through his hair as he cried. She somehow had an endless supply of tissues in her purse. By the time the service was finished, Micah had a little mound of tissues piled next to him. Rafaella helped him gather them and throw them in the trash can. Then they left the building, and she immediately started shivering. Ah. That's right. She was used to the delightful Paris weather. He'd been there a few times with his family (to visit hers) and loved it there, but he would always prefer home. Even if it was too damn cold out here. With barely a thought, he shrugged off his jacket and handed it to her. She took it with a suspiciously flirty smile and slipped her arms into the sleeves.

He was about to say something until he saw her. Of course, he'd figured she'd come--she was Anna's friend, too--but he hadn't expected to see her so soon. His heart was thumping too loudly, he knew it, and now he was getting that panicky feeling in his chest he'd gotten in high school whenever he was alone with her and her boyfriend--his best friend (and possibly secret love of his life). They hadn't spoken in years, so for all he knew, they were married by now. (Although he was fairly sure Leo would've invited him to such a huge event.)

Rafa gently pushed him toward her, probably sensing, as she always did, that he desperately wanted to say something.

So he did.

"Alana." Just her name. If he said much else, he'd probably break apart, or at the very least, embarrass himself.

Oh, hell, one more word. "Hi."

Leonard would be lying if he said that he was doing fine. He had been expecting it, of course. Anna had told him as much. She was getting weaker as the days flew by. It was the reason why the letters were handed to him a week prior to her death. She had made sure that he would get it and would know the instructions of what to do with them before she passed away. He had asked her many times to simply call them before then - so that they may at least see her before she had died. He doubted receiving a letter about the death of one of their closest friends and a subsequent request would be a pleasant experience after five years of no contact. But she had adamantly told him that he shouldn't - that even just telling Alana was a breach of their promise but one that she had allowed to slide.

And now here he was, driving towards the church for her funeral. Alana was on the passenger seat and Zemora at the back. The drive had been completely silent. He couldn't blame them. Even he didn't know what to bring up at times like these. He pulled up at the parking lot and shrugged on his jacket. And with that, he quickly fell beside Alana and began the trek towards the church. He had noticed how Zemora seemed to have stopped just shy of the entrance but didn't comment on it. They were all lost in their respective thoughts. Zemora also didn't know of Anna's condition - neither Alana nor himself could say anything about it. He was sure it was challenging for Alana to not mention it to her sister, considering how close they were. He wasn't sure whether he was glad or not that Alana had held steadfast.

He felt her hand wrap around his and he instinctively squeezed. His other hand immediately went to his pocket as they continued to walk. Choosing a seat at random, they sat down and waited for the ceremony to start. Leonard did not cry during the ceremony. Perhaps he had made peace with Anna's death after all. But the heavy feeling on his heart couldn't be mistaken for anything else - it was grief. Nevertheless, he put a hand on Alana's back to soothe her sadness. The ceremony wasn't long - not by a long shot - but it felt like an eternity to him. But once it was over, she had excused herself to head for the bathroom and Zemora had headed outside.

He didn't move. Not for a few seconds at least. He stared at the casket that held one of his dearest friends - one of the people who had helped him. Leonard let out a sigh as he stood up, moving out of the pew and looking for the bathroom. He shouldn't leave Alana for too long. He knew that she was taking this harder than he was. He spotted her among the crowd and was already moving towards her but stopped at the last moment.

Micah.

Of course. The others were here. He was less prepared about the confrontation than he was about Anna's death. Nevertheless, nothing would happen if he just dawdled around. But he decided to give them at least some time. The memories of their highschool days were still present in his mind. He wasn't blind to that atmosphere when they were teenagers. As far as he knew, Alana hadn't kept any contact with Micah - just as he didn't. Give them a moment or two to catch up. He idly looked over to Micah's companion - girlfriend perhaps? - and she caught his eye. He held it for a second before looking back at the pair and moving.

"Micah, it's been a while." He said, a small smile settling on his face as he stopped beside Alana. He looked towards Alana for a moment, placing a hand on her back and silently asking if she was alright now. "And by a while, I mean a few years. How have you been?" It sounded stiff and courteous, but how else was this going to go down? It had been five years since they've seen each other. Even if Leo wanted to reach out, he was too afraid of what might happen if he did. That he might find out that Micah doesn't want to talk to him anymore. That fear always overruled his decision to contact him, however unfortunate that was.

It really was real. Everyone was here. Seeing all of his old school friends from afar made Jacob remember everything. The repression of old memories, the way he used to be on drugs. It made Jacob panic. What would everyone think of him? On today of all days, Jacob was off his face on some form of intoxicant. Seeing little Lilo who he'd seen only a handful of times put things into perspective. He was at this respectful funeral and he stunk of booze and sadness. What was he doing? All these people who he knew so well. He couldn't bare it, the pressure of being a fucking failure. His parents were right. He shouldn't have left the house this morning. He brought embarrassment and shame to himself and his family. He removed his glasses and wiped the heartbroken tears from his flushed cheeks. He had to take a step back. It was like the whole world could stare and judge him. No. He needed to be alone.

Jacob left and walked into the forest of gravestones trying keep away from those who would repeat all the awfully true things his parents said. He was a wreck and a failure and a disgrace and all the superlatives and similes that one could think of. He just couldn't deal with the pressure of everyone staring. Why did he think he could do this? Anna was the only one who cared. The only one who wanted to help, even talking on the phone with him for hours just to make sure he wasn't doing anything ridiculously stupid. Why didn't she say anything? Why didn't she give him a hint as to what was going on? It hurt so much to know that he didn't know. He would've been there by her side with anything that she might have needed. He may not be the richest or the smartest but he was loyal and that's what was needed in a friend during awful times. Loyalty.

The young man just wanted to get away. However, he didn't want to return to that. It just inforced the truth. Etched in stone with the shifted earth beneath his feet, it was as clear as day. Jacob tugged his hair and gritted his teeth but he couldn't stop it. His eyes were rivers of pain whilst his breathing couldn't keep up with the sobs coming from his mouth. He felt broken. He felt wrong. "I'm sorry," he whimpered. "It should be me in the ground not you. How can an idiotic addict survive and an amazing person like you not. I'm an awful friend and an even worse person. I can't do this anymore. I tried so hard to do this for you. You were there for me when no one was. You cared about me and I shoved it back in your face like it was nothing. I never did anything for you when you did so much for me. I didn't deserve your care and protection. I don't deserve anything." His knees buckled from underneath him, the pain in his chest affecting the limbs of his body. Jacob simply couldn't cope with the heartbreak of losing someone he truly cared about.

Still worried about potentially looking like a raccoon, but not actually caring enough to check, she nearly fell over when she saw the first face she recognized. She was honestly surprised it had taken this long, considering she'd come back into town for the funeral a few days ago.

Marianna.

Just as Cam drew in a breath to call out to her, a memory replayed in her head. The new girl of their group but loved all the same, Cam had just been trying to help her plan for her future. Mari, however, hadn't wanted her help and Cam couldn't see that at the time. It had been quite the explosion, and pretty much the end of their friendship.

Was it worth it now?

Without realizing what she was doing, her feet had taken off. Before she knew it, she was behind the girl. "Mari." Cam spoke before she could stop herself. "It's... It's Cam." She didn't know Mari had spotted her first. "How are you?" The stupidest of questions, one that Cam could have shot herself for asking.

"Forget that." Cam heard herself say, a soft chuckle escaping her lips into the frigid air. "I could have just asked about your dead puppy." Frowning, she rubbed her arms, glancing down at the ground. "Anyone's dead puppy, really." Damn it, why couldn't she stop talking about dead puppies??

Her decision was quickly voided. While she nervously twirled a piece of her hair between her fingers she was planning to make a quick escape. Not out of the church of course, she would sit this out to the end but...maybe far away enough from something she was scared to deal with right now. Maybe that would stop her heart thumping out of her chest like this. The argument was stupid and panicking over that alone was probably dramatic but it wasnt that arguement along that mattered. It was the leaving before she could ever apologise for her poor behaviour or make up along with the surrounding atmosphere that gave her uneasy emotions.

About to take a step she heard a familiar voice call her name and she froze. Her heart letting a singular loud thud before she willed herself to turn around and face the source, meeting eyes that looked as upset as hers. She blinked when Cam was trying to remind her who she was. Of course Mari knew, she was just trying not to until that point but was caught. She wouldn't admit that though. She...actually wanted to talk to her? Or maybe she was keeping up appearances for Anna's sake. Mari hoped it wasnt the latter. Because under the awkward conversation she was glad to hear Cam talk to her again.

How was she? An obvious question for everyone here really. Cam seemed to realise this too as she tried to steer the conversation to...dead puppies? She raised a brow as she watched her old friend ramble on. A weird topic choice but at least she was trying to break the ice... albeit in an odd way. It was more than what could be said for Marianna's own pathetic reaction to the situation. Cam was braver than her, though she was still nervous. Her eye contact broken as she rubbed her arms. It did not go unnoticed by Mari so she'd cut her some slack about her words.

"It's fine" she eventually answered, her accent not sounding as strong as it did 5 years ago but still there. "I don't think anyone wants to talk about dead puppies though." She answered with a sheepish smile of her own. "I'm...okay. I think that's the most anyone here can say they are right now" she answered softly before there was a silence. The atmosphere was awkward for sure. It seemed neither of them knew how to approach eachother after this long "...What about yourself?" She asked back. Cam was reaching out. Even if it would turn out to be Cam just trying to be polite. The least Mari could do was try as well. She blew some air from her cheeks as she looked around. Pulled out of her thoughts the cold air was finally starting to have an effect on her as she moved the cardigan off her arm to put on "Have you spotted any of the others?" She then asked, she had thought she spotted Zemora as she looked around but the crowd leaving the church had broke her line of sight.

As Alana's eyes scanned the room for Leo or her sister, they landed on another familiar face instead. Micah. She had expected to see him so she was prepared, at least she told herself that she was. She let her feet carry her over to where he stood. She hadn't spoken to him much since graduation, maybe here and there in the year that followed but not at all after she got back with Leo. It was good to see him again despite the unfortunate circumstances.

"Micah," she finally let it slip out of her mouth, the urge to pull him into a hug was strong but she didn't. "God, it's been so long. You still look the same as you did in high school," she spoke softly. She had so much to ask him like where he had been, what he'd been up to, if he had any major life changes over the past four years but before she could she felt a hand on the small of her back. Leo.

She was thankful for the sense of comfort he gave to her with just his presence but it was soon replaced by the tension between the group of former friends as they struggled with a way to actually hold a normal conversation. It wasn't angry tension, just strange all being in the same place after falling out so long ago. "Did you get the letter? From Anna?" she asked, knowing well that he had. She was just trying to break the ice a little but she wasn't sure if she was doing a good job.

"Oh, sorry. Who is this?" she said referring to the stunning girl standing before her. "I'm Alana," she introduced, her voice sweet yet bold. She hadn't noticed her until this moment but she assumed it was Micah's girlfriend which kinda made Alana feel...intimidated? No. She was happy for him. Why would she not be? She smiled and pulled her hand back from the handshake, turning her attention back to Leo and Micah.

ZEMORA SHELBIA
T.....H.....E..........N.....E.....R.....D

From where she stood at the entrance, Zemora caught sight of Micah engaging in a conversation with Alana and Leo. An unfamiliar face was stood beside him, and her eyebrows furrowed as she questioned to herself who it may be. With a curiosity burning in her eyes, she made a move to step towards them, but was cut short before doing so.

A childlike shriek of joy drew her attention away from them. At the base of her legs was Caydon's daughter, a toothy grin bright on her face.

She had never been the best with children — her interactions with them almost always left the child tearing up at her ceaseless sardonicism — but she held a stable connection with Lilo. A smile tugged at her lips as she patted the girl on her head of curls.

"Of course I'd come. I wouldn't want to miss out on seeing you, would I?" she replied. She took a quick glance at the girl's father, her own friend, before continuing, "You should believe him next time."

Fully turning her attention to Caydon, her gaze caught the letter in his grasp, and she offered a curt nod in response. It seems that they had all received the letter, though she wondered if they had all consisted of different messages, as if Anna had handwritten them herself.

Zemora visibly cringed at the nickname he gave her; though it was acceptable with the young girl stood between them, she found it too juvenile to be uttered from the grown man's lips. "Do you have to call me that?" she questioned, disgust etching her features.

Her friendship with Caydon was rather odd, to say the least. Brought together with contrasting backgrounds and personalities, they were the most unlikely pairing to walk the hallways of their high school. He offered her an unspoken notion of protection, and she provided him with assistance in his classwork and a strict sense of responsibility. Though she fell out of contact with most of the group, she had managed to maintain her bond with Caydon, and was proud to admit that she was one of the four people in the group that knew of Lilo.

Shoving her hands into the pockets of her coat, she gave him a half-hearted shrug. "I've certainly had better days, but I'm not wallowing in my own grief, at least."

Grief had always been a difficult emotion for Zemora to come to terms with. She vaguely remembers it being an omnipresent factor of life when her mother passed, even if she didn't understand why her father would often excuse himself from the dinner table to cry in his bedroom, or why her grandmother would visit just to clutch at her mother's favorite shirts, inhale the scent of lavender and coconut.

As she grew older, she viewed grief as a distraction. Where one would cocoon themselves in their tears and "what-if"s, she took grief as motivation to focus on her schoolwork and become successful. That notion still has not changed as an adult.

Little did everyone know though, she too was prone to shedding tears, so long as they were in secret. That much was evident if one gave proper attention to the red of her eyes.

Nonetheless, her hazel gaze met Caydon's and she asked, "And you? How are you?"
when will you be back at the office?

Micah McKinney
Micah Collage.jpg

Before Alana said anything, Leo came over. He immediately put a hand on her lower back, and Micah got the message loud and clear: they were definitely still together. Of course, he'd expected it, but it was still a stab to the heart, seeing it in action.

What hurt him more was how stiff he sounded, how distant. They hadn't kept in contact, sure, but weren't they still practically brothers? He could've cried, but he didn't. Instead, he fought down the rising burst of energy inside him. "Yeah, it has. I've been pretty good. How about you, Leo?"

He bit his lip, and, after a glance at Rafa, he sighed. "Oh, screw it."

Without any pretense, Micah ran toward Leo and threw his arms around him, hopefully not knocking him down or pushing him back, but since Micah's love was overwhelming, it was quite possible. He didn't even say anything; he just squeezed the man who was his best friend, who had become a part of the McKinney clan and come over for countless dinners. The man who surely loved him (though he was never as verbal about it as Micah was) and had missed him as much as Micah had him.

After a moment, he let go, and, giving him a punch on the shoulder, playfully glared at him. "You've missed a lot of family dinners, you jerk. I hope you plan on making it up to me."

He turned to Alana with a smile on his face (Leo hugs always made things better). "Surely I don't look exactly the same, right? But thank you, I'll take that as a compliment."

The smile disappeared as soon as Anna's name passed her lips. "Yeah, I did. I'm guessing you two are planning on going...?"

Thankfully, she almost immediately changed the subject again. Turning toward Rafa, he frowned. How exactly did he explain her? They weren't exactly a cut-and-paste explanation of a relationship...

Rafa smirked at him before stepping forward to shake Alana's hand. "I'm Rafaella, but you can call me Rafa. Micah and I are childhood friends. Or, if you prefer the spicier explanation, I'm his ex-girlfriend." She turned to Micah and, adjusting his jacket on her shoulders, said, "I'll wait by the car." And with a quick peck on his cheek, she was gone.

Micah had a strong urge to pinch the bridge of his nose. With a weak grin at Leo and Alana, he added, "Annnnd that's Rafa."

Get me out of here, now.

Mortified at the direction her thoughts had taken, and even more embarrassed that she'd said those thoughts out loud, Cameron was ready to call this conversation quits already. The fact aside that Cam didn't even know if Marianna wanted to see or talk to her, who would after Cam's incessant mention of dead puppies?? Ready to cry all over again, she lowered her gaze to the dewy ground. "I'm sorry."

"It's fine... I don't think anyone wants to talk about dead puppies though."

Cam couldn't help it. She busted out laughing, startling a group of older ladies near them. She waved as an apology, the turned back to Mari, an actual smile on her face. "I think you're right. About being okay, I mean." She shook her head, the smile fading some as she closed her eyes, the image of Anna's casket popping into her mind.

At the mention of the others, Cam reopened her eyes and shook her head. "You're the only one so far." Biting her lip, not wanting to talk about the constant pressure she was still under, she decided to take the easy route out. "Just schoolwork and more of that." Laughing, though not as loudly as before, she looked around the lawn.

"Do you think-" She started to ask, when she spotted someone nearly get tackled. "Holy shit, Mari." She nodded in their direction. "I think that's Micah. And Leo. And... And Alana!"

Leonard smiled and gave a nod at Micah's response. At least he was doing fine so far. He wanted to respond as well, but he found himself not being able to think of an answer properly. Where could he start? The fact that he didn't go through with his plans that he had told Micah once upon a time. The fact that he was stuck with his family business of his own volition but the fact that he still didn't like it at all? Micah had known about his issue with his family business so he wasn't sure how he would react to him leading the local company.

He didn't have to think about it anymore when Micah mumbled something before launching himself at Leonard. His reaction was instinctual as his entire body tensed up to keep himself and Micah from falling due to the impact of how much force Micah put into the hug. Leonard couldn't help but let out a short chuckle as he wrapped one arm around Micah and squeezed him back. He let go when Micah did and the smile that broke on his face was more genuine than earlier - more easygoing, more reminiscent of how he looked back when they were younger. "Hey, I never got a memo on the family dinners. Slip it to me next time and I'll make sure I get there."

The McKinney family had always welcomed Leonard whenever he came over. They'd been the first people to show him what it felt like to be part of a family and he had truly missed them over the years. They treated him like a son and the warmth that they had given him was the complete opposite of his own father's. One of the biggest losses that he had when he hadn't reached out was Micah's family. He looked forward to seeing them again.

"We are. It is Anna's final wish after all." Even if Leonard had adamantly told her that it was a bad idea, she wouldn't relent. She wanted to see them all happy again, together, even if she was looking from elsewhere. Who was he to deny her wish? But it still didn't sit well with him for the sole reason that he was unsure on how everyone else was going to react to the idea. Spending two weeks at a ski lodge with people you haven't kept in contact with for five years? Even if they were your best friends your entire high school life, so much can change in just five years.

Leonard turned to the woman that accompanied Micah. Hearing about her being Micah's childhood friend, he gave her a nod and was about to move for a handshake when Rafaella dropped that she was also his ex-girlfriend to which Leonard stopped at. Well, he supposed that at least they were amicable enough to be affectionate to each other? Intimate even? She left after the introduction as she headed for the car. "Interesting girl." And that was his only comment about her. She seemed like a fun person to be around at the very least, but with Micah's reaction, it doesn't really seem like he was too fond of the open affection.

Alana was a little taken off guard when Micah was suddenly tackling Leo into a hug. The bromance, while it had been strained for years, was still obviously alive. She couldn't help the giggle that escaped her lips as they finally let go of each other. She was about to chime in on the conversation when she caught another pair of familiar faces. Cameron and Marianna standing just a few feet away. She hadn't seen either one of them in years either and she felt badly about that since they had been good friends before. She wasn't exactly the best about keeping up with friendships but she did have Cam on social media and they would like each others post here and there. Didn't that count?

She waved them over to where she was. Might as well say hello now. They were all going to be together for two weeks after all. That was assuming that they were going on the mountain trip. When the girls walked over she immediately gave a warm hug to each of them before stepping back a bit to get a good look at them. "Cam. Mari. I'd ask how you are but I think that answer is the same for everyone here today." she started, "We were just talking about the mountain trip. Are you both going to be joining us?" she asked softly.

She had been a little more open to the idea than Leo. While he seemed like he didn't care much to go on this trip, Alana was a little more excited than she would admit. Between the recent fighting with Leo and the pressure from his parents for them to hurry and marry so they could have a baby, she saw it as a much needed break. Plus, she kinda missed their old friends and thought it might be good for them to reconnect again. She glanced around to see if she saw any other familiar faces or her sister but her attention was turned back to the girls when one of them spoke up to answer her question.

Caydon smiled as Lilo smiled an even larger smile than the one she had on previously due to her Aunt's words. He knew the bond they share was strong, he doesn't know if it was because of the fact that he depended on Zemora when he became a single dad. It wasn't like that he didn't trust anyone else to help him. He had Anna, Micah, even Jacob but Zem was the person he calls first. He just needed her to knock some sense into him, and make sure that he doesn't totally screw up this dad thing. Kind of the way that she did in High School. He needed her to make sure that he was the best dad to this wonderful little girl.

"Daddy is very smart! I missed you a lot. A lot Aunt Zemmy. " Caydon looked at Lilo and then looked back at Zemora. He saw her nod and sighed. What was Anna's thinking? They have been apart for 5 years. Caydon has changed, and everyone has but they aren't the same friends they were. He doesn't think they ever were without Anna. Anna was the glue, and now the glue was gone. Other than personal feelings, or relationships. They were a group of people who had nothing in common, this trip will be crazy. He looked at the sky and sighed but for Anna, he had a feeling that they would do crazy for her.

"Yea I do Zem because it annoys you. And I kinda love doing that, it's my brotherly duty. " He winks at her as she complained about her nickname for the thousandth time. He considered himself her big brother, and he loved annoying the shit outta her. "That's good. She wouldn't want us to wallow in grief. " He said softly to her smiling and then looking at the other groups catching the eye of the one girl who always captured his eyes. So she was here then. He looked back at Zemora at her question, he had a sad smile on his face.

"...I don't know Zem. I just....don't know. I haven't cried since I found out. You are suppose to cry right when you hear news like this?" He said quietly looking at her hazel eyes

Micah smiled and nodded. "I'll be sure to let you know. Mom and Dad will be glad to have you." His nod became more somber as he mentioned the trip to the cabin was Anna's last wish. "Yeah, I'd hate to disrespect her last wish."

Rafa's exit, of course, had an effect on his best friend. He sighed. "She's interesting, all right... Sometimes I wonder if she actually registered the conversation in which we broke up." Alana, meanwhile, didn't verbally react to Rafa - he wasn't sure if he should be relieved by that or not - instead waving over Cam and Mari, two of their other friends. Well, it seemed most of the gang was here. Of course, there would always be a hole now...

Speaking of friends, was Caydon here? Was Lilo? He'd thought, for a second, he'd heard her voice, and he was a little sad it wasn't directed at him. She was a little ball of sunshine, and he loved her for it. Seeing her reminded him why he was going to be a teacher - children were amazing sometimes.

Turning back to the conversation, he shifted his weight. He'd just remembered that Rafa had the keys to the car. She wasn't going to leave him here, right...? How embarrassing would it be to ask for a ride from Leo and Alana? And awkward? Oh geez...

Just as she recognized the other three, Alana turned her head and spotted Cam and Marianna. Almost as if it were fate. Despite herself, and despite the years of distance between everyone, Cameron could feel herself relaxing somewhat. She even smiled at Alana, returning her wave with one of her own. No one seemed to be angry, at least not at each other. Not that she could tell. Of course, they were all upset, but losing a friend like Anna would do that to you.

Biting her lip, Cameron looked back at Mari. "Come on. Let's go say hi." Almost as if trying to be reassuring to herself as well, she smiled at Mari and then started off towards the others, who hadn't seemed to have noticed them yet. Alana hugged both Cam and Mari as they approached, and Cam looked at the other two. She'd seen the display of bromance, or at least the tail end of it.

Some things never change.

"Hey, guys." Cameron felt her voice go softer, much like it had been back in high school. Frowning slightly, she realized that her earlier fears had been confirmed. Being around everyone again made her feel like that shy girl from back then, and she didn't know how to change it. Maybe time would help, or she could just blurt out that she was a stripper. No reason to be shy after that, right?

But she knew she wouldn't do that. Heaving a small sigh, she cleared her expression and looked between the others. "I've missed you all."

Hearing Cam laugh had pulled a smile from Mari her brows raising when Cam had startled the women next to them, her hand moving to hover in front of her mouth briefly. She was glad Cam didn't seem to hold anger from their fall out or at least no seriously visible anger. Even so, She'd still need to apologise. Well...at some point. Not now, that would be in rather poor taste in such a setting. Mari had looked as their friends had been mentioned. Seeing them all years later, they all looked a little different but she could still recognise them a mile away and if Cam hadn't coaxed her along Mari probably would he been froze in place staring. She nodded in agreement with Cam as she followed her, spotting the two men hugging. A familiar sight for sure causing her to smile a little at them. She stood next to Cam once they got there immediately getting pulled onto a hug by Alana, again a different yet familiar feeling welling in her chest from the interaction and the little reunion between all of them.

She wasn't sure if she liked it. She was happier to see them than she thought she would be of course but she could feel herself tearing up and getting a little emotional about it. Maybe she was feeling a bit off from not eating or maybe it was the atmosphere? Had she just softened up over the years? Maybe. She honestly couldn't pinpoint what was going on with her. She fluttered her eyes. Blinking away whatever tears were threatening in the corners of them and laughing out an apology first. With a quick wipe under her eyes she adjusted her glasses then answered Alana "Yes. It took me a while to find a sitter for all my dogs but I'll definitely be there." She answered with a smile. "Maybe we'll all be able ask one another how things have been a little better by then" she commented. She knew she wouldn't be the best conversationalist right now. Of course be are of the reason they were here bit for Marianna coming back here and seeing everyone was a little more emotional than she thought it would be and she didn't exactly mentally prepare herself for it. "I missed you all too" she finally admitted after having a good look at everyone and after Cam had said it first

It had been a few weeks and the time for the trip had come. Alana was planted in the passenger seat of the van that the group had decided to rent. It was just simply easier for everyone to ride together rather than meet up. She reached over and took Leo's free hand into her own, smiling at him slightly as he drove before glancing back to the road ahead. The mountains were breathtakingly beautiful even though she was used to the mountains she’d never get over how amazing they were.

They weren't far now and she was kind of excited to be back in Montana as they'd had so much fun last time they were here. Sure things were different now but that didn't mean they could bring back that fun again. Right? Alana turned the music down only slightly as she looked at the others in the back seats. "Maps says we are two hours away!" she beamed happily.

"We should celebrate tonight. Anna's life. Our reunion. Ya know, start this trip off right." Alana suggested knowing they needing to break the ice. A nice warm fire, some food and drink would be a good start. At least, she thought so. She hoped everyone else was on board. Maybe they could throw in some games or something. She was honestly looking forward to skiing at some point during their trip. It had been so long since she'd gotten the chance.

"It's freezing out there..."
location: in the van
with: Marianna ( Nona Nona ); Micah ( AnimeGenork AnimeGenork ); Leo ( AI10100 AI10100 ); Alana ( jasmyn jasmyn ); Caydon ( r e i r e i ); Zemora ( erosful erosful )
mentions: same as above

Cameron spent the three weeks after the funeral mostly spending time with her family or by herself. She wanted to reach out to her friends again, but after the funeral it had become so easy to just fall into the same old long distance habits. It was sad, but there was one thing that kept her company:

Dancing.

She'd gotten her first stripping gig just outside of town, back before moving away. The manager remembered her when she drove out there and walked in, and didn't mind putting her on a few shifts. Just to distract herself, but well... she also had bills to pay. It honestly was just like the old days... sneaking out to a job that no one knew she had, pretending to be working late at the library or at a friends house.

Boy would her parents flip. Even now.

She'd packed for the trip to the lodge in a hurry after getting in late the morning they were renting the van and leaving. She tried to put on a smile for everyone, but truth was, she was exhausted. She'd fallen asleep in the van shortly into the trip, and only stirred when she heard Alana's voice. Blinking a few times to try and wake herself up, she realized she was laying on someone's shoulder.

"Sorry." Pushing herself up, she nearly died when she realized it was Caydon's shoulder she'd been sleeping on. Instantly her face took on a pink hue, and she looked away, down at her hands. "I didn't mean to... well, thanks, I guess." Laughing somewhat nervously, she looked towards the front of the van, where Alana was talking about celebrating.

"I think that sounds like fun!" Cam offered. "We'll definitely need a fire. I can already tell it's freezing out there."
