2083. Children and teens from the ages of 3 to 18 are developing abilities. Some can control water. Some fire. Some shapeshift. And each student’s ability is different. Either in the ability itself or the expression of the ability.

Some x-rays were done, and in each child, a new organ had grown on their shoulder. They were all shaped differently as if the organ was unique to each power. It wasn’t visible with the naked eye with younger children, but as you got older, the darker the mark became

The government of the United States doesn’t know what to do. Some suggest helping the children control their abilities and guide them. Some suggest researching the children and figuring more about the organ. And still, others suggest simply killing the children off.

The president decides that putting the children in a jail of some sort would be too controversial, so he makes a system of 40 schools across America. The schools are advertised as a way to help your child control their power, making it safer for them to use. In reality, there is no teaching. The schools are containment centers. The students aren’t allowed to leave the school grounds unless allowed, and they are taught that their power makes them dirty and less than others.

(This is my mark. I know it's really hard to see :neutralteeth:)

The bus rumbled and shook beneath me as it rolled over the countryside. Acres of farmland whizzed by. I shifted my hands in my lap, jingling the chains.

I was on my way to a new institution. At my last institution, I had tried to escape for the ninth time and was caught. Again. The headmaster of the school thought that I was too knowledgeable about the escapes from the school, so they transported me to a new one. My old school was called Skylos Institution. This one that I’m going to is Idryma Institution.

The bus took an exit and entered an unpaved, overgrown dirt road. I jostled around even more. The guards on the bus looked at me suspiciously, assuming that since I was moving I was trying something. I rolled my eyes. The guards didn’t know anything about us. If I told them that when I sneeze, shadows come out of my nose, they would believe me.

I caught a glimpse of the Institution up on a hill through the trees. My heart hardened at it. I started to calculate the different ways to escape this place.

The road was long and overgrown, so it would be hard for cars and trucks to chase me through there, but there were guards at the entrance, and trekking through the woods was definitely too risky of a variable to count on.

We were close to the school now, and I could see the building clearer. There was an equally long road extending past it, which I knew was going to be well guarded before I saw any guards.

The bus parked and two guards yanked me out of the seat. Four guards flanked me as the headmistress sauntered up to meet me. She was an intense looking woman, with her silver hair pulled back into a tight bun. She was wearing a white shirt with a grey blazer. Her gaze landed on me as I approached her, and I could see why this school had the least runaways. In her eyes, I could see the past failures. The resentment in her eyes for those lucky few who had escaped from this 10th circle of hell. Our eyes met, and just before I dropped my gaze to the ground, I saw a flash in her eyes.

I continued walking up the hill, feeling a push from the guards every so often.

I couldn't quite place where I saw that flash before, but it was so familiar. It wasn’t hatred, that I had seen many a time before. Hatred was a fierce fire, a messy violence, grabbing at you, dragging you. This was cold, calm, calculated. But it still cut into me like a doctor cut into a patient.

I was walked in the house, showed around the house, and pushed into a hallway.

“Your dorm is the last one.”

I walked down the hallway, glancing back behind me at the guards and the headmistress walked down the stairs. The polished wooden door at the end of the hallway stared me down. I knew what would happen once I walked through that door. I would officially be a student here. I would have to learn everything I could about this school in order to escape.

I opened the door.

The first thing I noticed in the room was the silence. There were multiple kids in the room, all probably under 18, but they were all completely silent. A girl on the bed nearest to me was looking down at her hands, her eyes far away. A boy on the bed opposite her was laying down on his bed, tears glistening on his cheeks and wetting the pillow. I walked down the aisle of defeated children and sat down. I stuck my hand in my pocket and took out my gloves. I took a sharp breath as I remembered why I brought them. I slipped them on and felt the darkness of anger, despair, and memories overwhelm me.

This is my mark. :ghostv:

I sat on the rusted metal chair, creaking as the bus shook from the dirt path it was gliding along. My wrists starting to get sore from the cuffs of my hands. I glared out the window, the tan, tall grass whipping past my eyesight. The bus took a left onto a dirt pathway. The smoke from the rocks clouding the windows. I turned my head and looked up at one of the guards. He was standing at the front, though it was hard, keeping his eyes on me.

There were two others in the bus. All of us spread out through the seats. The first one was sitting at the very back, head down and tears streaming down his face. He barley looked like he was ten. His curly, black hair looked like it hadn’t been touched for at least a week. His legs were curled up to his chest. I slowly got up and the guard yelled at me to sit down.

“I’m just moving seats, not attacking you.” I said defensively. I turned to the boy. He hadn’t moved. I shuffled my feet to the walkway and stood up. I wobbled back towards him and fell down in the seat next to him. I shifting to get comfortable and glanced at him. His head was up and he was looking at me in disbelief. He quickly looked back down at his knees once he realized I was looking at him. I shifted uncomfortably and cleared my throat.

“What’s your name?” I asked. He kept his head down and his mouth shut. I sighed and continued, “Look. If this is your first time being an in institution like this, your’re going to want someone to talk to. I never had that when I was your age. I’m trying to be nice. So I’ll ask again, what’s your name?”

This time he looked at me and gulped. His eyes were glistening and puffy. His hands were shaking, but he mustered out a few words.

“Liam Riffle.”

I smiled at him. “Nice to meet you, Liam. Is this your first time being here?” I asked.

He nodded, “I’m only eight.”

“Okay. First things first, don’t go messing around with guards. There not the type of people to be played with.” I assured him. He made a frown and nodded firmly. I smiled at him.

“So...um... what are you here for? I-I mean, like, what’s your power?” He asked fiddling with his hands.

“Oh, I have light manipulation,” I said. “What about you?”

“I can read minds.” He smiled.

“Remind me not to tell you anything.” I chuckled.

“You don’t need to, I already know half your thoughts.” He said tapping his index fingers in his temple. I laughed nervously.

The bus took a sharp right and almost ran into the guards standing outside of the institution. We here already? I thought. Their yells were muffled, but they still seemed pretty loud. The bus jerked to a stop and I hit my head on the seat in front of me. Damnit, I thought. One of the guards inside of the bus stepped outside and the other guards waved us off as the gates opened up.

Liam and I looked outside the window of the bus at the big building known as The Idryma Institution.

“Here we are,” I said. Liam looked at me, “Are you ready?”

===================================================

(Btw the ‘other girl’ isn’t Ella she’s just a random girl. I came to the institution before Ella did.)

When we stopped in front of the institution, and the guards quickly came and jerked us out of the bus. There grip was extremely tight as they dragged us down the steps of the bus and to the concrete steps of the building. The guards opened the doors and the headmistress came out. She was a stern looking woman, her hands folded in front of her. Her sliver gray hair was pulled back into a tight bun. She was glaring down at me. After a few seconds she stood aside to our right and held out a hand. The guards hands gripped tighter onto my forearms and walked into the building, Liam behind me. I looked up at the ceiling and sighed.

Here we go again, I thought.
