Request I need ideas for a magic system for a medieval RP.

Jacosmoot

It's been a while.
I'm making a medieval fantasy RP and I'm looking for good ideas on a magic system.

I want it to be somewhat unique. Any ideas work, regardless of what kind of magic system. (Be it inspired by something like DnD with writing in spellbooks and rituals or something along the lines of Chakra from Naruto. It doesn't matter to me.)

If it helps, my medieval RP will have a dark theme. (Involving demons, vampires, etc...)

When creating a magic system, I personally ask myself several questions about what I hope to achieve with the system.
Is the system geared more towards fast of slow effects?
How common is the ability to work magic?
How widely varied are the power levels of the mages?
Is magic ritualistic, or based more on the mages imagination and understanding of the world around them?
What is the power source?
Can the magic be used to imbue items with power?

So, let's see. In one world magic worked like this.
Magic was confined to enchanted items, created by a small number of mage-smiths with widely varied skill levels. Creating each item took time, and depended on the smiths understanding of their craft and used materials that represented the desired effects. Major items such as mage-swords, were imbued with a portion of the creators life force, or the life force of a willing participant, so weren't created on a whim. These major items also drew upon the life of the user to fuel their power when used, so they weren't ultimate weapons.

Once you figure out what you want magic to do, you can evolve your system around the desired effects. One thing to always remember is that magic should cost at least as much as doing the action would by mundane means. The mage might not pay the cost, but someone or something is paying it.

Thanks! I'll keep all that in mind. I'm not 100% sure yet on the answers to those questions myself, honestly.

I think this is better suited to be at Roleplay & Discussion, rather than in the Creativity section.
Haha, sorry. It was late last night when I posted that. I couldn't find a better section so I went with posting it here.
